CHAPTER THREE
ACCUSATIONS
"I know it was you." NK slammed his tray down on the table, taking the seat immediately across from Khushi. He picked up a hunk of bread and took a menacing bite from it, not breaking eye contact.
"Please close your mouth when you chew, New Kid, you're being disgusting."
He pointed at her with the half eaten bread. "It was you. I recognised your voice, you know. I should've told Dhruv." He swallowed. "Hell, if I tell everyone else on the corridor they'll flay you alive. They had to clean everything up you know?"
"It's not my fault that you let other people take the fall for what you caused."
NK's eyes narrowed. "So you admit it, it was you?"
"I admit no such thing." Khushi leaned back in her chair, folding her arms. "In fact, I'm not on your corridor. I have no idea what you're even talking about."
"So you're the reason I woke up with foam in my ear?" Khushi looked up as Arnav took the seat to the left of NK and Aakash took the one to the left of him at the end of the table, with Payal on his left. The boy who Mr Singh had had by the ear yesterday sat to NK's right.
"NK keeps accusing me of doing something that may have caused that, but I'm sure I have no idea what he's talking about."
"Hmmm." Arnav bit into a slice of toast. "You know, yesterday I thought you just looked insane. I had no idea you actually were."
"I am not insane."
"So then what exactly do you call what happened last night?"
"Revenge!"
"SO IT WAS YOU!"
As the bickering continued, Aakash looked at the girl to his left who had been determinedly staring into her cereal bowl during the entire exchange. "You know; you might want to finish that before the milk curdles. I swear the milk they give us is always only about 5 minutes short of expiring."
When she looked up, he was surprised to see her eyes watering. "I'm so sorry!" she burst out, grabbing Aakash's much larger hands with her small, slender ones. "I promise I didn't mean to hurt you or get you in trouble. It's just, when Khushi sets her mind on something nothing I do or say can stop her so mostly I just join in to make sure she doesn't go too far but I heard the goat kicked someone and then I was so worried the fire extinguisher spray might be toxic I couldn't sleep all night and- I'm just... so sorry."
"Err-" Aakash swallowed and pulled one of his hands from her grip, using it to awkwardly pat her on the shoulder as she began sobbing loudly. Everyone else at their table and a few nearby was staring at them. "Erm, excuse me. I- please stop crying. We're fine. It's okay. Everything's fine. It was actually quite funny."
"Are you stupid? Why would they put toxic chemicals in a fire extinguisher?"
"Don't call my best friend stupid!"
"Well if she's stupid enough to have you for a best friend then clearly the stupid has had more than enough time to diffuse over."
"Oy! I'm not stupid either, you bumface."
"Bumface? What are you twelve?"
As the arguing showed no signs of coming to a halt, Aakash slowly pulled his other hand from the girl's and handed her a clean tissue. She rubbed at her nose and sniffed delicately. "So you forgive me?"
"Yeah." Aakash was just relieved she had stopped crying when suddenly, she gave him a dazzling smile and pulled him into a hug.
"Thank you!"
The table had gone silent again. Aman choked on the mouthful of Cheerios he had just swallowed and grabbed the water jug from the centre of the table and drank directly from it to try to wash it down.
Payal slowly released Aakash, having realised what she had just done.
She flushed red and was only slightly comforted when Aakash's cheeks start to burn too. They both looked away, avoiding everyone's gazes.
Khushi spoke first. "Payal... did you just hug a guy?"
"Aakash," Aman had recovered from his choking fit once NK helpfully thumped him on the back, "bruh... did you just let a female put her hands on you? Am I legit seeing this?"
"Oh grow up," Arnav stepped in to try to help Aakash out of the situation, "so they hugged. It's the least these idiots can do to make up for what they- OW!"
Khushi had just thrown a clementine at his face.
Arnav stood up so quickly his chair toppled over backwards. Khushi met the challenge head on. "Enough." He snarled.
He stormed around the side of the table and grabbed Khushi's arm. She protested, but he ignored her, as well as the curious looks from all the other students in the cafeteria as he dragged her out behind him.
