CHAPTER 4
The whole central market place of the fort of Amer had been decorated with various colours, flowers and garlands. Whole place was surrounded with an overwhelming glee and pure gleam of happiness of the common people. The vendors had sat in their respective stoles of various commodities, and all of them were overcrowded by the enthusiastic customers. Along with the local venders and the citizen merchants of the state, there were a lot of stoles from the other states too, who had come from far in the hope of a great dealing like always... Amer is celebrating the auspicious celebration of dashera' today and like every year the grand fair of Amer has been successful to attract plenty of people here despite having such a strong and hazarding security system this time!
At the central market place, a young soldier in uniform was choosing a designer Chunri' from a shop of cloths and garments. From his face it was evident that he is quite inexperienced in this case, and so the shopkeeper was helping him with all of his enthusiasm leading to make him much more confused.
"Yeh lal dekh sakte hay vaya... Jaisa rang hay, aisa hi sundar karukarya. Koi bhi ladki isse dekhegi to na leke rahe nehi payegi..."[You can try this red one...Both the colour and design is nice. Any girl will pick this one at first chance...] The shopkeeper advertised. The soldier, who has a dark complexion and masculine body, but the handsome and manly face has a glow of innocence too which has made him a cute and handsome person, confusedly shook his head. "Sayad uske paas aisa ek chunri hay." [I think she has a scarf like this.]
"To fir yeh le jaiye... Hara wala. Yeah yeh neela..." [Then take this green one. Or the blue one...]
"Dono to ek jaise hi hay..."[Both are looking alike...] The soldier murmured. "Moti ko hara rang pasand bhi hay yeah nehi... Thik hay, aap o pila wala dijie." [Does Moti like green colour or not... Okay, you pack that yellow one.]He tried to come to a decision, but again got stuck. "Par yeh gulabi wala to jyada accha hay... Pila lu yeah gulabi..."[This pink one is also good... Which one should I take...]
"Do hi lelo vaya! Bhabisa ko pasand aayegi!"[Take both of them. Bhabisa will love it!] The over enthusiasm of the vendor made the youth more confused, and he started seeking other ones to come out of that confusion.
While tying the ropes of the temporary tent of the shop, Jalal was happily enjoying the confusion of the young soldier. The soldier is almost of his age, but he has got the taste of the most beautiful confusion ever! Jalal, in spite of being the richest and the mightiest person of this world, can never get the taste of these little but most precious feelings. In this aspect that unknown common soldier is much richer than the emperor of Hindustan! While watching the youth, Jalal's mind suddenly filled with a strange surprise. These people are those who keep their life at stake every moment of life to fight for their kings- without any personal agenda. In spite of that from where they get so much energy of life? Perhaps for the smile that will reflect on the bright face after getting the gift from her beloved, perhaps for the tear that will drop from her eyes in the happiness of meeting after a never-ending longing gives them the vigour of life, the strength of smiling, the eagerness to come back at their home after a long hectic blood-shedding war...
Jalal has one too in his home who is supposed to long on his way like this... But she does not. She is too content in her own little and luxurious world. A little sigh came and vanished immediately from his face.
"Aree, Vijay... Tum chunri kharid rahe ho???"[Vijay, you are buying chunri???] A person, most probably the friend of that soldier stood behind him to pull his leg. "Tumhara kharida hua chunri pasand hoga tumhare hone wali patni ko? O aise taise koi thori na hay? Amer ke rajkumari ki sakhi hay!" [Will your future wifr like your choice? She is not any mere one- the friend of the princess of Amer! ]
"Mazak mat karo! Hum bhi kya kam hay?"[Don't make fun! Where am I less?] The young man faked anger. "Hum bhi rajkumari ki deharakshi bahini ki pradhan hay! Kunwar Sujamal ke khaas hay hum!" [I am the head of the bodyguards of the princess! I am special to prince Sujamal!]
"Pata hay pata hay... Tum rajkunwari ko rakhsha karne ke naam se unke sakhi ka dil chori kar liye ho!"[I know I know... You had stolen the heart of the princess's friend while protecting the princess!] The friend teased. "Aab bolo, shadi ka naota kab milega?" [Tell me, when we are getting the invitations?]
"Pahele aapna ghar-bar basale, phir... Moti Bai ko aise hi kisi chote se kuthri me to nehi daal sakte na?" [First let me set up my house, then... I can't bring Moti Bai in a little hut!]
Jalal was minutely hearing everything that they were telling. So, this soldier is the head of the special bodyguards of the princess and also is very close to Kunwar Sujamal whose name he had heard in morning. Can this soldier help him to any extent or...
"Ouch!" Jalal turned back after getting a hard slap on back. The fat vendor was looking at him with red eyes. "Kaam na karke bahar kya dekh raha hay saale kamchor?"[You are wasting time by watching outside, you idiot?] He yelled.
Such a use of language with the emperor! It really took a good effort from Jalal to control his rage. In silent and vain anger he clenched the rope which was in his hand. Maybe he would have done something, but fortunately the youth intervened.
"Kya kar rahe ho! Tumhara koi adhikar nehi hay aise kisike upar hat uthane ka!"[What are you doing! You have no right to beat him!] He said. Perhaps it was the power of his uniform that the vendor chose to leave Jalal. Jalal, exhaling an angry breath looked at his face with a satisfactory expression. Their eyes met, and there was a confused feeling in the soldier's eye- certainly he had been astonished to see the extraordinary authoritative look in the eyes of a mere worker. Jalal again got into the role he was playing and moved his eyes. This youth is the soldier of Amer. If he wants to see the affiliated papers from him then...
But the soldier Vijay Singh was completely in holiday mood. He forgot the worker very soon and continued chatting with his friend.
"Abhi hum chalte hay. Bohot sare kaam hay aaj! Mahel ki naariyan puja ke liye bahar niklenge, hume unke suraksha prabandh dekhna hay!"[I am going now. I have a lot of works to do! The women of the palace will go out from the palace for worshipping, I have to manage the security!] He suddenly told in hurry.
"Rajkunwari Jodha bhi rahenge na? Moti Bai ke sath?"[Will not Princess Jodha be there along with Moti Bai?] The friend pinched.
"Haa rahenge."[Yes she will.] Vijay Singh ignored. "Pratyek bar ki tarha o Ramlila ke utsav dekhne rajpath se yatra karenge."[She will be going via the main road to see the festival like always.] He smiled. "Tabhi to itni utsaah hay prajayon me... Unke Kunwari Jodha ko ek jhalak dekh jo payegi! " [Only for this the subjects are so excited... They will get a glance of Princess!]
"Suna hai vivah tyar hua hay unki? Aisa hua to Amer anaath ho jayegi!" [I heard that her marriage has been fixed? If this happens then Amer will become orphan!]
"Tyar hua hay... Kunwar Suryabaan Singh ke sath!"[It has been fixed with prince Suryabaan!] he laughed. "Are Rajkunwari Jodha ki vagya me Maharani banna likhi hay. Aise chhoti si rajya ki rajkunwari bankar humesha thori na rahenge o?" [She is destined to be an empress. Will she live forever being a mere princess of this little state?]
The thoughts of Jalal got mingled again. The princess will pass through the main road of the state only. He will not have to bear much trouble to see her. And other news is she is going to marry... The beauty that makes the Sun and moon jealous is going to be achieved by some lucky Suryabaan Singh. However...
Taking the remuneration of their work- that is one silver coin, Jalal and Abdul started walking at the side of the road. The whole market place had been adorned like a new bride... There is a vast field nearby, the preparation of Ravanbadh' is making there. A bunch of little kids are running here and there with a lot of crackers in hand. The crowd is chattering in a spontaneous energy that is floating in the ambience of pure happiness... The little state in the lands of dessert is looking like a happy stream of glee in the crowd...
Abdul was walking consciously beside Jalal, suddenly had to stop for answering the question that he has been asked. "Tumhe kya lagta hay Abdul, kya farq hay Agra or yeaha ke jashn me?" [What do you think Abdul, what is the difference between the celebrations of here and Agra?]
"Agra me to Jashn or bhi bara hota hay Sha..."[The festivals of Agra uses to be much bigger...] He did not completed the word as he was not ordered to do so, and continued "Amer me bhi kuch kami nehi hay, par Agra ki baat alag hay. Mughal Saltanant ke jaisa khajana to inke paas nehi honge na to is..." [Amer is not any less, but Agra is something different. Simply this state will not have the property of Mughal State and so...]
"Abdul!" Jalal again stopped him. Looking at him he smiled. "Srif yehi farq dekha? Or kuch dikhai nehi diya?" [You saw only this? Nothing more?]
"Or kya?" [And what?]
"Hum to ek hi baat ehsaas kar rahe hay!"[I can feel only one thing!] Jalal smiled with a mesmerized amusement. "Agra agar sarkari haarfo me likha hua ek dastabej ho, to Amer khwab ke kalam se likhi gayi ek saayeri..."[If Agra is a official document with official fonts, Amer is a poem written by the pen of dreams...]
"Matlab?" [What?] As usual Abdul did not get anything from his majesty's peculiar words. The emperor smiled broadly looking at his ignorance. With a low voice, as if he was talking with himself he started "Agra me bhi jashn hota hay, sab khushiyan manate hay... Par sab kuch hisab se chalta hay. Koi khusiyon ke laher me kho jane ke bare me sochta hi nehi! Jaise ki unke khushiyan manana aapne dil ke liye nehi, aapne shahenshah ki khushi ke liye ho! "[Festival takes place in Agra too, everyone makes marry there too... But everything goes on in certain rule. None even thinks about floating in the tide of happiness! As if they make marry for their emperor- not for their heart! ]
Abdul nodded without knowing what to respond. Jalal again started. "Tumhe pata hay aisa kyu hay Abdul?"[Do you know why is this Abdul?]He himself gave the answer. "Kyu ki unn jashnyon se unke dil ka koi jog hi nehi hay... Abdul..."[As there is no attachment of heart in those festivals...Abdul... ]
"Jee huzur."[Yes my lord.]
"Hum bhi agar humare saltanant me Navratri ki jashn ka elan kare? Aisa ek jashn jisme humare saltanant ke sabko dil se khush hone ka mauka mile? "[If I too start celebrating the festival of Navratri? This type of a celebration where all of my state will get the chance to be happy?]
"Aap pagal ho gaye hay?"[Are you mad?] Abdul popped his eyes. "Aap aapne saltanant me Hindu utsav manayenge?"[You will be celebrating Hindu festival in your Nation?]
"Haa. Hume jitna pata hay humare riyaya me Musalman se zyada Hindu hay. Hum aapne awam ke khusi ke liye kisi bhi jashn ka elan kar sakte hay!" [Yes. There are more Hindus than Muslims in my subject. I can do anything I want for the betterment of the Nation!]
"Or aapke Khan Baba?"[And your Khan Baba?] Abdul told in a bit uncomforted voice. "O kabhi iss baat ke liye razi honge? Or aapke samjhane bujhane se agar o razi ho bhi jaye fir bhi Maulabi or imaamo ke khilaaf jake yeh kaise karenge aap?"[Will he be ready to permit you for this? And even if you make him understand, then too how would you do this going against the religious persons?]
Jalal looked at him with disgusted eyes. Needless to say this disgust was not for him, but for the hard reality of that he is not independent to do whatever he want. He will have to seek permission from his mentor, will have to take sanction from the religious people and then he is free to plan something from his own! Sometimes his heart wants to rebel against all these... when will he be strong enough to become the true emperor?
The light mood spoilt at a minute; to cheer up himself again he doubled up his speed. A vagabond was singing folks sitting beside the road; he sat in front of him without giving Abdul any signal. The aged man was playing a strange-looking local instrument sitting on the dust beside the road, with singing in an intriguing voice...
"Keshariya Balam aayo...padharo mahre desh..."
The strangely heart-shivering voice started flowing in the air like a pleasant perfume. Jalal closed his eyes...it was feeling like the soil of Amer was calling him- padharo mahre desh...' The rural sound of the musical instrument seemed like the most beautiful welcome-song ever he has heard. He tried to mingle his entity in the tune... again the spark of those fiery eyes flashed in front of his eyes! Why would he need to see the princess for a glance? The real heart of this dessert had herself come to meet him yesterday!
The song was complete. The old man looked at him with some expectations. Jalal thought for a moment and then gave away the silver coin he had got as bonus along with the chance of entering in the fort. The old man's eyes filled with gratitude and hesitation at a single time.
"Yeah kya? Tum tumhare rozgar ki sare paise hume de rahe ho?"[You are giving all your money to me?] He told.
"Aab yeh aapke rozgar hay!" [Now it has become your earn!]Jalal patted on his shoulder. "Pata hay humne jo diya o bohot kam hay aapke prativa ko samman den eke liye... Par humare paas srif yehi hay deneke liye!" [I know what I have given is nothing in front of your talent...But I have only this to give!]
"Jeete raho beta. Bhagwaan bhala kare!!" [Live long my son. May God bless you!!]The man touched his head with the words of blessing. The Emperor of Hindustan took the blessing from a beggar of the street of a enemy land- and for Jalal, it was the most heart-felt blessing he has got ever!
It seemed the old man loves to talk. He took no time to start chatting with two completely unknown young men half of his age... He has 4 members in his house- one his wife who is almost in bed due to arthritis and 3 little grandchildren, whose parents have died in the rampage months ago... so to earn the livings he has to sit beside lane with his old musical instrument in this old age; all is the game of the lord...
"Aap...rahete kaha hay?"[Where do you live?] When Jalal asked the question, he could not meet his eyes with the person due to the unknown guilty-feeling he was having! The old man sighed. His words sounded like wailing to Jalal.
"Ghar to humara tha beta... Kille ki bahar mandir ke paas humare sukhi paribaar tha! Humare ek phool ka dukan bhi tha... beta chalata tha. Fir uss din kaisa tufaan aya, sab tahes nahes kar diya! Humare ghar ujar gaya..."[I have my home my son... I have my happy family beside the temple outside the fort! I had a shop of flower run by my son! Then the storm came that day, everything got finished! My family ruined!] He could not control his heart-rending grief! "Khatam ho jayega! Uss bidharmi, lutere badshah ka sab kuch khatam ho jayega! Itna paap bhagwan nehi sahenge..." [They will be finished! That outsider robber emperor will be finished! The God will not bear all these sins...]
It was not hard to guess the unfortunate to get all the curses of this broken man. Jalal lowered his eyes suddenly. A moment ago the blessing from the same man was feeling like a boon of God and suddenly such an imprecation from the same man... He has nothing to say in his defense- he is responsible for the pain of this old man!
"Sarkar se kuch sahayata nehi milta hay aap logoko? Matlab jinke ghar ujar chuke hay raja unhe kya diye hay?"[Do not you get any type of help from the Government? What has the king done for those who have lost all?] Abdul got into a very practical discussion to change the uncomfortable situation perhaps after feeling the plight of the emperor.
"Hume kille ki andar rahene ki jaga mila hay! Sarkari hisab se abhi humare naam nagriko me nehi likha gaya hay, parantu hume kuch or subidha bhi milti hay... iss mandi ki piche wale basti me rahete hay hum!"[We have get the place to live inside the fort! Our names have not been enlisted in the list of citizens officially till now, but we use to get some other helps... We live at the slam behind this market!] He stopped for a moment to breath and smiled then. "Rajkunwari Jodha humare bohot upakar karte hay! Suna hay unke hi daya ke karan hume adhe daam me gehu diye jaate hay. Pratyek pavan tithi me Rajkunwari Jodha ke mahel se humare jaise be-gharo ke liye naye kapre aate hay! Garibo ke bare me unse adhik or koi nehi sochta... Devi hay o! "[Princess Jodha uses to help us very much! Heard that only for her kindness we are getting the ration in half price. She give away new cloths to us in every sacred date! None thinks for the poor men like her! She is the Goddess!] He touched his joined hands on forehead, perhaps in the respect to that Goddess in the form of a woman.
Jalal was hearing all the details with mesmerization. In his heart, he also bowed down in respect to that great woman who is trying her level best to bring back the smile of these unfortunate people! Generally the rich women of this age use to spend their time in the world of dresses, jewelries and all. But the elder princess of Amer is so different! By now she was just a mere curiosity, but now she took a special place of respect in his heart!
"Rajkunwari aaj utsav me bhag lene ke liye aa rahi hay na?"[Isn't the princess coming to join the festival today?] He asked.
"Haa... Pratyek bar aate hay! Unhe sadharan nagrik dekh nehi pata, par who sabko dekhte hay, sabki sukh ki kheyal rakhte hay o!" [Yes, she uses to come each year! The common people do not get to see her, but she sees everyone. She takes care of everyone's happiness!] He looked at the flag of the palace from distance. "Abhi ayenge o! Sab unhe dekhne ke liye rajpath me bhir jamayega! Aree kya utna assan hay Devi ko dekhna?"[She will come very soon! All will start crowding on the road to see her! Is this so easy to see the Goddess?] he chuckled!
After bidding the old singer goodbye, Jalal moved toward the main road- via which the palanquin of the princess will come. He was wrong to measure the princess only from her beauty; according to the common people she is divine- the Goddess... Perhaps judging her from only a glance will be an insult to her! The only way to know and understand her is to sit and talk with her... But, perhaps this is almost impossible!
The old man was right; the crowd was being overloaded with the setting sun. The shops beside the road was overflowed with people, the road was too no less! Even the field nearby had not an inch of space left! But the crowd was spontaneous from heart- full with joy and happiness!
While walking with the crowd Jalal suddenly lost again. There are so many women in this ocean of human... is it impossible to see her for a second time in this crowd? Is it really impossible to get a glance of her in his life-time? Jalal himself does not know the reason, but he was feeling very restless the moment he starts realizing that the last night was the first and last meeting of both of them! Casually, he was trying to see all the young girls' faces in the crowd, though all were looking the same! Where is that enigmatic lady! Where?
Suddenly the excitement of the crowd got doubled, as the announcement of the entering of the royal women was made from distant... Jalal, along with Abdul and the rest of the crowd, moved toward the announcement. The royal escort was coming towards, with the strict security of the bodyguards... The announcer declared the most precious moment...
"Sabdhaan... Amer ki rajkunwari Jodha Bai ki palki rajpath se ja rahi hay... Samne ki raste se haat jaiye..." [Be careful; Princess Jodha's palanquin is proceeding via the main road... Leave the road of front...]
But the enthusiasm of the crowd was much enough to ignore this declaration. They were eager to see their princess. Jalal was too in the crowd, forgetting the face of that valiant lady who has captured his heart for a while, he proceeded to see the princess of Amer, to whose kind nature his kingly mindset has been fascinated.
He came too front of the palanquin, just in front of the royal guards, to see the princess once!
