Chapter 12 - Jeene Laga Hoon
The next morning...
Preet stood hidden by the stairs in one corner of the living room. He held an open file in his hand to give the impression of being busy in something important. His eyes darted from the center of the living room where children were gathering for Meher's class and the kitchen door, from where he knew she would enter any minute now. Or at least that's where he had seen her go after clearing up the breakfast dishes. Then, all of a sudden, there she was, leaning slightly backward, carrying a stack of freshly washed dishes. From her posture, it was obvious that the load was too much for her. Preet took a step forward thinking he would help her, but the kitchen door opened again and Kuljeet entered the room.
Meher hoisted the dishes onto the table and sighed with exhaustion. "Now make sure you dry those dishes properly and put them away before you take your class," Kuljeet instructed her.
"Ji," said Meher. She pulled out a cloth from her apron's pocket and began to dry the dishes.
"And don't forget to remind these little rascals that next week is the 1st of the month," added Kuljeet. "They had better remember to bring their tuition if they want to continue getting tutored. We're not running a charity here you know."
"Ji," sighed Meher. She waited until Kuljeet left the room before speaking to the children. "I'll be with you all in a few minutes," she smiled. She worked her hands as quickly as she could pausing only to push back the wisps of hair that had a tendency to fall into her bright brown eyes.
Preet stood in his place watching her admiringly until her eyes finally fell upon him.
"Preet!" she smiled. "What are you doing over there?" With the last of the dishes dried and put away, she joined her class and motioned for him to do so too.
"I was just looking for a place to sit and review this report," Preet lied holding up his file. "Gaurav isn't here and it was just too quiet in the guest-house. You know absolute silence can drive you nuts sometimes. I was getting sick of staring at these numbers and wanted to be around someone."
"Well, you're welcome to sit with us," said Meher.
"Are you sure?" Preet asked as he took a seat next to her. "Because I don't want to disturb your class."
"You won't," smiled Meher. "We're just reviewing homework today."
"Well in that case," he held out a shiny red apple. "An apple for the teacher."
"Thanks," smiled Meher.
"You know what my Heer Bhabi always says?" asked Preet.
"What?" asked Meher.
"An apple a day keeps the doctor away," said Preet. "Good thing I'm a businessman."
Meher laughed then turned to help a little boy with his math problem.
Preet counted 8 children of various ages sitting before them with their heads buried in their books. "I have no idea how you manage all the work you do Meher. I mean, kids can be difficult to handle."
"Not these children," smiled Meher. "I've been tutoring this same group for 3 years now, and they're very well behaved. Although a few of them still have trouble in math." She playfully ruffled the hair of a little boy sitting near her. Besides, I love children and I love teaching. Hey everybody, say 'Hi' to my friend Preet."
"Hi!" The children said in unison.
Huhn? Friend? After last night...just friend? Preet gave the children a weak smile then looked back at Meher. She was busy helping a little girl. Hello! Friends don't steal secret glances at each other. They don't get jealous when you talk to someone else. And they don't get butterflies in their stomach just from looking at you. I don't want to be just friends any more!
Did you say something Preet?" asked Meher.
"Huhn? Uh...no...no I didn't," said Preet. "You know, maybe I should go back and work in the guest-house." He reluctantly stood up and left. Minutes later he was back. "Forgot my file," he said. He picked up his file and began to walk backwards towards the kitchen smiling at her all the while, until he ran into the door making Meher and the children laugh.
"Hota hai, hota hai (it happens)," frowned Preet.
"Han lekin, aap ke saat aaj kal kuch ziyada hi ho raha hai (Yes, but it's been happening to you a lot recently)," giggled Meher.
A few days later...
It was early in the morning when Preet headed out of the guest-house intending to get a head start on his day at the office. He walked up to his car parked in the driveway on one side of the Maan's home, and was about to get in, when he saw Meher come out onto the porch. Her long hair hung loosely around her shoulders, just the way he liked it, while her hands sheltered a small cup of tea. She leaned against a pillar, taking long lazy sips, smiling to herself as if grateful for the luxury of being granted a moment of solitude.
Lucky cup, thought Preet.
Once her tea was done, Meher placed the cup on a windowsill, then stretched out her arms to chase away the last remnants of fatigue. Unaware that she was being watched, she walked out into the yard, picked up a garden hose and began watering the plants there. Preet watched her kneel down to straighten up a flower pot that had tipped over. Her hair fell forward as she bent down and when it didn't go back with just a flip of her head, she combed it back with her fingers.
When she stood up again she was holding a small white flower in her hand. She began to pluck one petal off at a time. A soft smile formed on Preet's lips as he imagined her saying 'He loves me...He loves me not', and him sneaking up on her, hugging her from behind, and declaring 'He loves you!'
Just then, Meher saw him. She smiled and waved. He waved back then decided to go over and talk to her. The book launch at the mall coming up in a few days would be a perfect excuse. Unknowingly, he slammed the car door shut right on his hand. "UGH!" he screamed in pain.
"Preet!" Meher dropped everything and ran over to him. "Are you okay?" she asked worriedly.
"I've had better mornings," Preet winced in pain. "But I guess I'll live."
"Let me see," she said as she gently took his hand in hers. "Come on, we need to get some ice on this right away."
Meher led Preet into the kitchen and made him sit on a stool by the counter. She searched the drawers and found a first aid kit. She took out 2 tablets of pain medication and handed it to him. "This should help with the pain," she said, then ran to the fridge to get a bottle of water. She helped him take a sip then took out some ice and wrapped it in a piece of clean cloth.
Preet winced as she gently cradled his hand in hers and applied the ice pack she had made.
"Does it hurt very badly? Are you sure nothing is broken," she asked.
"I don't think so. Just bruised. Especially my pride," He said wryly.
"You're really something, you know that," chuckled Meher.
Preet nodded absentmindedly. He was too busy watching the way her hair bounced off her shoulders as she moved about in the kitchen. There was a little smudge of dirt on her cheek from having worked in the garden. Her eyes sparkled with laughter. He was certain she had no clue how beautiful she was.
Meher became aware of his scrutinizing gaze, but tried her best not to show it. He had been doing that a lot lately. Just staring at her. Little tingles of excitement rifled through her mind. "Does that feel better?" She asked. When he continued to stare at her and say nothing, a blush spread over her cheeks and she reached up to tuck her stray hair back.
"Preet!" she said.
"Huhn? What?" said Preet.
"I said, does that feel better?" asked Meher.
"Yeah, a lot better," grinned Preet.
"Good," said Meher.
She smiled back at him, and he was struck anew by just how beautiful her smile was. She literally glowed with her soft inviting lips and sparkling eyes. An ache rose inside him as he realized what he wanted. He wanted to kiss those soft inviting lips. Kiss her so hard those bright eyes would close.
Okay Preet, get a grip on yourself! He mentally scolded himself. Focus on something else...anything else! "Um...nice weather we're having," he remarked.
"It is a nice day," smiled Meher.
Oh no! Not the killer smile again! Preet cleared his throat then looked around the kitchen. He saw a napkin lying on the counter and picked it up. "That's a very nice design on this napkin," he blurted out. "You made it yourself?"
"It's just a simple floral pattern," said Meher.
"Yeah...but it makes it so much prettier," said Preet. "I mean, if I had to pick a napkin I'd pick this one over a plain one any day."
"Okay, if you say so," chuckled Meher.
Great! I'm talking nonsense now, and she thinks I'm crazy, thought Preet. He caught a glance of the smudge of dirt on her cheek again and couldn't resist himself any longer. "You know you have a spot of dirt right there."
"What? Where?" Meher asked as she raised her hand to her cheek.
"Here, let me," Preet offered. He took the napkin he was holding and lifted it to her smooth skin. She didn't say a word, but grew very still as he wiped her cheek. He could feel her gentle breathing against his hand. She felt so warm and soft beneath his touch. The dirt was gone, but he didn't want to stop.
"Is it gone?" Meher finally asked.
"Huhn? Oh...yeah," said Preet, reluctantly pulling his hand back.
"Well then...I better get back to my chores," said Meher. "And you have to get to the office."
"Yeah, I guess I do," sighed Preet.
A few days later...
Preet and Gaurav were sitting at the dining table discussing the progress of the hotel renovations, when Meher walked by and headed to the living room with a dusting cloth in hand. Easily distracted, Preet's eyes immediately began to follow her every movement.
"This file has all the bio data of the new staff we've finalized," Gaurav said. He handed Preet a report. "The hotel's reopening is nearing, and we've got a good response in terms of advance bookings for conferences and general reservations."
"Right," said Preet, not really paying attention.
"The figures are on page 9," said Gaurav.
"Uh-huhn," nodded Preet.
"Preet! I said the figures are on page 9," said Gaurav.
"Huhn? Oh right, age 9," said Preet, absentmindedly flipping the pages.
"Not age 9! Page 9," Gaurav smacked himself on the forehead. "So...what do you think?"
"Ouch!" Preet suddenly cried out loud.
"What happened?" asked Gaurav.
"OUCH!" Preet said again, looking in Meher's direction.
Sure enough she heard him this time and came running. "Preet, are you alright? What happened?" she asked.
"That's what I want to know," mumbled Gaurav.
"Paper cut," Preet whined as he sucked on his finger.
"Oh is that all," chuckled Gaurav. His remark was immediately followed by kick under the table from Preet.
"It hurts so much," complained Preet.
"It sure does," Gaurav mumbled rubbing his leg.
"It's pretty deep," complained Preet. "Look, it's even bleeding."
"Let me see," said Meher, as she took his hand in hers. "Hmm, it doesn't look so bad."
"Never judge a book by its cover," said Preet.
"Well, if it's hurting that much, I'll go get a bandage for you," suggested Meher. She headed for the first aid box in the kitchen.
As soon as she was gone, Gaurav smacked Preet over the head.
"Hey! What was that for?" cried Preet.
"For being such a wimp over a tiny little paper cut," said Gaurav. "And for kicking me under the table."
Just then Meher returned. She took out a tube of antibiotic ointment from the first aid kit and gently applied some to Preet's cut, then added a bandage. "That's the same hand you slammed the car door on the other day isn't it?" she asked. "You've become quite accident prone you know."
"Only when you're around," chuckled Gaurav.
"What?" said Meher.
"Nothing," Preet said glaring at his friend. "Thanks Meher. I feel better already. What would I do without you?"
Meher smiled, then went back to the kitchen.
"What would I do without you?" Gaurav mimicked Preet. "Laying it on a bit thick aren't you?"
Before Preet could say anything, Ashlesha burst into the room. "Preet! Preet!" She cried. "I just saw Meher putting the first aid kit away. She said you were hurt. Can I do something to make you feel better?"
"You can go away," Preet muttered under his breath.
Ashlesha picked up his hand and tried to get a better look at his bandaged finger, when he pulled away.
"It's just a little paper cut Ash," Preet said rolling his eyes. "Nothing to get all hyper about. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to put these files away."
Preet picked up his files and papers and headed out of the room. Undeterred, Ashlesha continued to follow him, voicing her concern for his injury.
Hmm, thought Gaurav. Why is Ashlesha so concerned about Preet all of a sudden?
A few days later...
Meher walked into the guesthouse looking for Preet. "Hey Preet where are you?" she called out. "Dinner is almost ready and..."
To her surprise she found him standing on a chair clutching some files and papers as if his life depended on it.
"Preet? Tum wahan kya kar rahe ho (what are you doing up there)?" she asked in surprise.
"Ch...ch...chipkali (lizard)," Preet stammered pointing a finger at the small animal standing not too far away terrorizing him.
"Ha! Ha! Ha!" Meher laughed out loud. "I can't believe it. Six foot something Preet Juneja is afraid of a little chipkali!"
"You call that little?" cried Preet. "It must be at least 6 inches long! Look at those beady little eyes, just waiting for me to come down so he can bite me. Will you please stop laughing and do something to help me?! He's got me cornered!"
"Okay okay relax," chuckled Meher. She took off her slipper, took aim and tossed it at the lizard. It promptly ran away. Meher picked up her slipper, placed it back on her foot and dusted her hands. "There now, it's safe for you to come down."
"Are you sure?" Preet asked worriedly, as he took a tentative step off the chair.
"Of course I'm sure," Meher assured him. "That is, unless you're afraid of a little old COCKROACH!"
"AAAHHH!!" yelled Preet as he jumped back on the chair.
"Ha! Ha! Ha!" laughed Meher. "You should see the look on your face! Priceless!"
"You think that's funny?" fumed Preet. "Just wait!" He jumped off the chair, tossed his papers to one side and made a dash for her.
Meher's eyes grew wide as she saw him coming after her. She tried to make it to the door but he got there first and blocked her exit. She let out a squeal as he chased her back into the room and around the furniture.
"You're in big trouble Meher Mann!" said Preet.
"I'm sorry," giggled Meher. "I was just having a little fun."
"At my expense," frowned Preet. "I could have had a heart attack!"
"I didn't know a grown man could be such a scaredy cat," teased Meher as she tried to run again.
"I'll show you who's a scaredy cat!" cried Preet. He lunged at her and caught her around the waist as she passed by the bed. He pulled her down onto the bed, held her down firmly with one arm, and began to tickle her mercilessly with his free hand.
"No Preet!" Meher gasped for breath in between fits of laughter. "Please stop!"
"Pehle kaan pakdo (First hold your ears)," Preet insisted as he tickled her some more.
Meher pulled one hand free and raised it to her ear. "Acha baba main kaan pakadti hoon (Alright I'm holding my ear)! Have some mercy Preet! I promise...I won't do it again!"
Preet looked down at her and grinned with satisfaction. He stopped tickling her but stayed where he was. Mesmerized by her closeness, his eyes became transfixed on her lovely face. He could feel her squirming underneath him and knew he should move, but the warm pressure of her body against his felt so good, he just couldn't bring himself to do so.
Meher saw the way he was looking at her and felt her heartbeat race. Her face grew hot as she watched him trace her features with his eyes. It wasn't hard to notice that his breathing had grown just as hard as hers. "Preet...," she managed to whisper. "...can you please...move? Koi humain aise dekh le ga (someone may see us like this)...please..."
"Huhn?" said Preet, as if waking up from a trance. "Oh yeah..." He rolled off her and watched as she quickly sat up and adjusted her dupatta. "I'm sorry Meher...I don't know where my head was."
"It's okay." She gave him a weak smile then got up to go.
"Meher wait," said Preet. "Did you come here for something?"
"Dinner," Meher said quietly. "Dinner is ready."
A few days later...
Preet and Gaurav were getting ready for bed when Meher knocked on the door. "Hey guys," she smiled. "I know you're about to turn in, so I won't keep you. I've got your laundry all done and ready, and I just wanted to give it to you in case you needed something from it tomorrow morning."
"Thanks Meher," said Gaurav. He took the small pile of neatly folded clothes from her. "What would we ever do without you?"
"Gaurav, did you give Meher our laundry again?" asked Preet. "Didn't I tell you not to?"
"It's not my fault," protested Gaurav. "She insisted on taking it."
"You know you didn't have to do the wash," Preet said to Meher. "We can send it out."
"You mean like the last time?" asked Meher. "We still haven't gotten your missing slacks back."
"And my 2 pairs of socks," added Gaurav.
"Besides, I just have to put the clothes in the machine, not wash them by hand," said Meher.
"I know, but you have enough to do already," said Preet.
"Preet, I've told you before, I don't mind doing things for my friends," said Meher.
Preet frowned. There was that word friend again. It was his least favorite word in the dictionary right now.
"Preet, what happened to your kurta?" Meher asked.
"What?" Preet said, as he looked down at the white kurta he usually wore to bed. "What's wrong with it? Okay I admit I was snacking on a chocolate bar earlier. Did I get a stain on it or something?"
"No, but it is missing a button," said Meher. "That's strange. I usually check the clothes for missing buttons and mending before I put them away. I wonder how I missed that."
"It's okay Meher," said Preet. "It's just a button. No big deal."
"No wait, give me a few minutes and I'll take care of it right now," said Meher. She walked over to one of the trunks in the corner and pulled out a small sewing kit. "It'll only take a minute and you won't even have to take your kurta off."
Preet stiffened as she came up close to him. "Hmm, let's see if we can find the right button first," she said, as she fingered the buttons on his shirt to get a good look at them. She then, turned back to the sewing box and began to sort through the buttons in it.
"Really Meher, you don't have to bother," Gaurav said as he came and stood next to Preet. "He hardly ever buttons his shirts all the..."
Before Gaurav could complete his sentence, Preet covered his mouth with his hand and pushed him away.
Meher took out a small white button from the sewing box and compared it to the button on Preet's shirt. "That's a pretty close match," she said. "Here, hold this."
Preet held his hand out and she gently placed the button in it. She then threaded a needle, tied a knot at the end, and took the button from him again. "Now stand still," she said as she stepped up close to him again and centered it on the correct spot. "I'm pretty good with a needle but if you move you risk getting pricked." She gave him a smile with a mischievous twinkle in her eye.
Preet averted his gaze trying his best not to stare at her like an idiot who had never seen a girl before. Look anywhere but at her, he told himself to no avail.
Again and again, his gaze was drawn to her pretty features, and he couldn't help but take notice of everything. Her long brown hair swept back into a pony tail with a white ribbon at the nape revealing the creamy skin of her long neck. The delicately drawn contours of her face. Her lips, full, soft, and pink with just a hint of gloss on them. The thick lushness of her lashes, lowered as she focused on the task before her. And the soft scent of lilacs emanating from her. She always smelled like lilacs.
"There we go," said Meher. "All done." Without thinking about it, she bent down and bit the thread off with her mouth, accidentally brushing her lips against his bare chest in the process. Her face turned red as a tomato when she realized what happened. "I'm...I'm so sorry...I didn't mean...," she stuttered, as she picked up one end of her dupatta to wipe the mark her gloss had left.
Preet grabbed her hand and stopped her. "It's okay," he said. "I'll take care of it."
Meher nodded then walked out of the guest-house as fast as her legs could carry her.
Preet exhaled loudly as soon as she was gone.
Gaurav came up to him and put a hand on his shoulder. "You okay man?"
Preet shook his head. "That girl has no idea what she does to me."
A few days later...
"Hey Meher!" smiled Preet as he poked his head in the kitchen. He had his hands behind his back. "Guess what I got for you?"
"For me?" asked Meher. Her eyes sparkled with anticipation. "What?"
Preet presented her with a bouquet of flowers.
"Flowers!" cried Meher.
"I know you work in a flower shop so it's kind of silly, but I saw these on my way home from work and I thought of you," said Preet.
"Aw Preet that is so sweet of you!" smiled Meher. She inhaled their scent deeply. "No one has ever brought me flowers before."
Preet stood in front of her with his mouth gaping. "You're kidding, right? A pretty girl like you," he said. "Have all the guys in Ludhiana been walking around with blinders on?"
Meher blushed. She needed an excuse to conceal her face, so she placed the flowers on the counter, and began to search the kitchen cabinets for a vase. "I can't believe I don't remember where I've put all the vases," she chuckled nervously. "Maybe in the pantry." She went over to the small walk-in space in the corner of the kitchen. "Ah ha!" she said, as she spied several vases sitting on the very top shelf. She stretched her hand up to get one of them, but even though she stood on her tiptoes, they were just inches out of her reach. Her pulse jumped as Preet suddenly came up behind her.
"Here, let me get that for you," he offered stepping farther into the pantry with her.
All Meher could do was nod. His nearness to her in the close confines was making her heart race. She took a deep calming breath, but nothing changed. Her heart was still racing. She thought of exiting the pantry but Preet was standing in the way, so she pressed her back against the wall instead to put some distance between them. She watched as he reached up and effortlessly grabbed the vase and brought it down.
"Here you go," he said, holding the vase out for her, but she didn't take it. Preet frowned and looked at the vase. "This was the one you were trying to get, right?" There was still no answer. "Meher!" He snapped his fingers in front of her.
"Huhn?" said Meher.
"Isn't this the vase you wanted?" Preet asked.
"Oh yes...uh...thanks," said Meher. "I...uh...better get those flowers in water right away."
As they exited the pantry, Meher made a bee-line for the kitchen sink. She filled the vase with water then began to arrange the flowers in it. Anything to keep her mind from thinking of her mixed up emotions about Preet.
"Uh...you know...now that I think about it, I've never given flowers to a girl before either," said Preet. "I mean, other than my mom. She used to love having fresh flowers in the house."
"I guess that's something we had in common then," said Meher. "I would have loved to meet her."
"And I'm sure, she would have loved to meet you," Preet smiled as he reached out and fingered the soft petals of one of the flowers.
It was then that Meher noticed a new bandage on his finger. "What's that?" she asked. "Is that new?"
"Just a little accident at work," said Preet.
"Oh no! Let me guess...the hotel renovation...you saw a broken shard of glass lying on the floor and were moving it out of the way so that no one would get hurt," suggested Meher.
"I'm afraid it wasn't anything as heroic," said Preet.
"Then what happened?" asked Meher.
"Another paper cut," said Preet.
Both Preet and Meher looked at each other and burst out laughing. The sense of ease and familiarity between them was not lost on either of them. They stood grinning at each other completely unaware that Sam and Gaurav had entered the kitchen.
Sam poked Gaurav in the ribs. "Now you tell me what that looks like?" she whispered. "They really like each other."
"Like? The boy is head over heels in love with her," said Gaurav. "I've been telling Preet that from day one, but he has always refused to admit it. Not everyone is as decisive as I am you know."
"Gaurav, I'm probably the only girl that's ever bothered to give you the time of day," Sam rolled her eyes.
"True," admitted Gaurav.
"Well, it's settled then," said Sam. "As their best friends, it's our duty to convince these 2 to admit their feelings for each other."
"It is?" said Gaurav.
"Yes it is," said Sam.
"Okay, I just hope this doesn't cause Preet any problems with his father," sighed Gaurav.
"Why would his father mind?" asked Sam. "I mean, Meher is a beautiful girl inside and out. And as long as his son is happy, he should be happy, right?"
"Not Mr. L. J. The man is cray cray," Gaurav said. He stuck his tongue out, crossed his eyes, and twirled his finger next to his head. "He's like Hitler, Mussolini, and Kim Jong-un all rolled up into one."
"Well I don't care," said Sam. "These 2 were meant to be and that's that." She cleared her throat to make Preet and Meher aware of her presence.
"Sam...Gaurav, how are you guys?" smiled Preet.
"Yes, Sam how are you? Ever since you 2 got together, I've hardly had a chance to see you," teased Meher.
"Well that's all going to change," smiled Sam. "I'm all yours for the rest of the evening. I'll even stay for dinner. But first, you and I need to talk."
Preet watched Sam drag Meher away. "Sam seems kind of excited. What's going on?" he asked Gaurav. "You didn't pop the question did you?"
"Sort of," said Gaurav. "She's going back to Delhi this weekend, and we're going to have a family dinner with both of our parents and make everything official then."
"Wow, that seems kind of fast," said Preet. "I'm happy for you buddy."
"Yeah well, when you meet the right girl...you just know," said Gaurav. "Kind of like you and Meher."
"Yeah," sighed Preet. "I mean, no...I mean...was I being that obvious again?
"Dude, you were practically drooling all over her," chuckled Gaurav. "You'd have to be blind not to see how much she means to you." He pointed to the vase with flowers. "Did you bring these for Meher?"
Preet nodded.
"Great," said Gaurav. "Did you tell her how you feel?"
"No," sighed Preet.
"Well then how is she supposed to know this isn't just a friendly gesture?" asked Gaurav.
"I don't know!" said Preet. He thought of all the times Meher kept referring to him as her friend. "I just can't build up the nerve. I mean, what if she doesn't feel the same way about me? What if she just thinks of me as a...friend?"
"You'll never know if you don't talk to her and tell her how you feel," said Gaurav.
Preet thought for a moment. Gaurav was right. He couldn't ignore his feelings for Meher anymore. For the first time in his life, he really wanted someone. Regardless of the outcome, he had to talk to Meher and tell her how he felt.
