Seriously, is wearing jeans currently still a big No-No in rural India?

I find the plot line of Maasa objecting to Pari wearing jeans very lame. I mean, she and Sattu didn't object to her furthering her studies, but she gets apoplectic over the fact that she wore jeans?! ..
