CHAPTER 18. TWO MONTHS LATER!
Two months passed since the fire incident as Geet called it. Geet sighed as she focused on her dictation. The deadline for the bet was coming near so Geet was very focused on her reading. As she stumbled on some words, her eyes went to the doll in front of her. She smiled mischievously and hit the doll's head. "Best of Luck! Best of Luck!", the doll crooned and Geet giggled. She smiled as she remembered the moment she first time she saw the doll.
"Best of Luck! Best of Luck!", the doll murmured and Geet let out a surprised laugh.
"Yeh kya hai? What is this Viren?", Geet looked at the doll with wide eyes and amusement on her face.
Viren shrugged, "They told me that you missed a lot of training time due to your rest days. So I thought I should bring you something that would cheer you and motivate you!"
Geet smiled brightly at Viren and hugged the doll, "Thank you Viren!"
Geet sighed as she came out of those memories. Viren had become a regular fixture at Khurana Mansion after the fire. He would come daily at the evening with a bouquet of flowers in his hand and entertain her with interesting observations he had done in the office. Few days after the fire, Geet had trouble breathing and she had to be admitted. Only there it came out that the smoke had done some damage to her lungs and she was put on bed rest and on innumerable medicines for atleast 2 months. Even now after two months had passed, Geet still had to continue some of the medicines. Her training was put on pause for 2 months even though she was allowed to move after few days passed. She was only allowed to get back to them after the Doctor had given her clean bill of health. But Geet was Geet! She was not going to allow some fire incident to ruin her dreams. She started reading the newspapers that arrived at Khurana Mansion, so that she was well versed with the latest news. After all, an event manager had to be in touch with current news. So Geet continued her study even on bed rest.
As she placed the doll back, Geet turned around and her eyes widened when she saw Maan passing by the door. She smiled softly. Maan! Her heart skipped a beat at his name. But Geet was not surprised by this. This was something usual for Geet since the fire. If the fire had made her realise how much Maan cared for her, the days after the fire only endeared Maan more to her. She still remembered the moment when she had trouble breathing. The expression on Maan's face was nothing short of pain and devastation.
"Hey Babaji! You want me to get back on heel walking?", Geet pouted. It was few days after the fire and Maan decided that it was time Geet got back to her training.
"Yes! I want you on heels!", Maan growled. Yesterday he had seen Viren and Geet hug and since then he had been grumpy and growly. Why he was like that? Geet did not know. All she knew was that something was off with Maan since he met Viren.
"By the way, what is wrong with walking on heels? You have done that enough times!", Dev wondered.
Geet huffed, "Exactly! I have done it enough times! Can't you give me something tough?"
Maan rolled his eyes, "You want tough? What do you expect me to teach you? How to do rope climbing? Geet! You are training to be an event manager, not a mountaineer!"
Geet pouted at his anger filled tone and silently complied with his orders. As she sat down to wear the six inch stilettos, Geet suddenly felt unable to breathe. As she tried to breathe properly her eyes went to where Maan and Dev were discussing something. Annie was in her room talking to her husband on phone. "Maan Sir!", Geet tried to call for no voice came out of her mouth. She clasped her hands around her throat as she tried to breathe but every breath was getting tougher and tougher to take and Geet was on the verge of fainting. Just as she lost consciousness Maan looked in her direction and Geet was shocked to see horror and anguish on his face, as if his worst fear had come true. After that, Geet fainted and she knew no more.
Geet let out a deep breath as she came out of that memory. The expression on Maan's face before she fainted remained imprinted in her mind and Geet knew that she would never forget it. She smiled as she remembered how Maan took care of her once she was discharged from hospital and confined to the bed.
"Geet! You haven't eaten your lunch yet!", Maan roared as he entered her new room.
Geet looked up from the book she was reading, "Not hungry Maan! Plus this story is so interesting!" She went back to reading the book and was surprised when the book was pulled away from her hand.
"Maan Sir!", Geet whined as she glared at Maan in annoyance.
Maan did not even notice her glare as he took the plate filled with food left on the table nearby and pushed a spoonful into her mouth before she could close it.
Geet blinked in surprise as she started to chew. Maan was feeding her lunch! Hey Babaji!
As Maan fed her the daal rice spoon by spoon Geet could not look away from Maan. Even when Maan scolded her in between the spoon feeding Geet did not look away. She silently had her lunch and the medicine Maan handed over to her. As Maan was about to move away, he looked at her, his eyes soften and his expression uncharacteristically tender, "Geet! If you don't take care of yourself, then how will you get well? You have to eat properly and on time from now on, ok?" He wagged his finger at her and Geet nodded. At that time Geet would have nodded to anything because the expression on Maan's face spoke to her heart the words neither Maan nor Geet could say or hear.
Geet smiled softly as she remembered that moment. Since then Maan had made his habit to monitor her intake. He would call her from Office to make sure that she ate and during dinner he actually came and sat by her till she finished everything on her plate. Geet was beyond touched by Maan's gesture. Then there was Maan's habit of putting her to bed like a small child. Geet giggled as she remembered that happening for the first time.
"Maan Sir! Are you out of your mind?", Geet shouted as she stared at Maan with horror.
"Arre! What wrong did I say? I said go to sleep or I will throw you onto the bed and tuck you in! Now what is wrong with that?", Maan roared back.
Geet looked at Maan incredulously and then looked at Dev and Annie who were standing behind Maan giggling amongst themselves. Sensing her glance both shrugged sadly and then started silently laughing. Geet shook her head. Those two were useless when it comes to saving me! She went back to glaring at her teacher.
"Hey Babaji! Maan Sir, I am not five year old!", Geet complained.
"You behave like one!", Maan spat.
Geet huffed, "Let me sleep on my own time!"
Maan shook his head, "No way! Doctor told you to be in bed by 10 and sleep for atleast 8 to 10 hours and that is what you are going to do!"
Geet glared at him, "Doctor told me to sleep for 8 to 10 hours but he never said anything about being in bed by 10!"
"Oh really? Fine!", Maan snarled, "My house, my rules! You get in by 10 whether you like it or not! It is unhealthy to stay up late!"
Geet slapped her forehead, "Hey Babaji! Kitthe fasaa diya! Please explain to Maan Sir how ridiculous he is being!"
Maan by then had enough of Geet's rebelling. If she was not going to bed on time, then he will do it himself.
Before Geet knew it, she was lifted up in bridal style and placed on the bed. Geet was shocked! She stared at Maan with wide eyes and open mouth as Maan pulled the bedsheet and covered her with it. Geet was speechless. Maan stalked off mumbling about insolent students who cannot even take care of themselves. Geet was about to sat up in shock when suddenly Maan turned and roared back, "Get down you woman! You won't get up till morning, got it?"
Geet, shocked by his sudden shout, meekly nodded while hiding her face under the covers. Maan walked away and Dev and Annie followed him still laughing.
Geet pouted as she remembered that moment. Since that ill fated night, Geet got under the covers before 10 just to not be embarrassed by Maan lifting her. She always sensed him pass by inspecting if she is in bed or not. As she remembered those moments, another moment came to her mind and she burst out laughing. The expression on Maan's face, Hey Babaji! He deserved it. He used to barge into my room anytime and everytime to check on me, right? He used to claim it was to see if I start talking in English or in Hindi when surprised. According to him, when someone is surprised, they talk in the language they are most comfortable with. And till I reacted in English, he would keep barging on me he had claimed. But I know better. Language was just an excuse. You just wanted to see I am ok! Well, you deserved that embarrassment. Wanted to check my language right? I made you check yours! Ha! Geet continued to laugh as that memory came to fore.
Geet sighed as she came out of the bathroom in her towel. She had once again forgotten to take her clothes with her. Jhalli Geet! Don't you remember that Maan Sir has the habit of barging into your room unannounced and at anytime to check on you and your command on English. And yet you forget to either lock your door or take your clothes with you to take bath. Stupid girl! Holding the towel tighter to her chest, she walked to the door with the intention to close it. And of course, Maan took that exact moment to barge in.
"Eeep!", Geet squeaked.
Maan's eyes widened and he stared at her.
Geet felt her embarrassment increase, "Maan! Mujhe kya dekh rahe ho? Palto!"
"Geet! English!", Maan barked.
"English gaya tel lene! Turn around you idiot!", Geet spat and Maan turned around right away.
Geet glared at the man, "Can't you knock?"
"Can't you lock?", Maan retorted.
"Hey Babaji! Why are you reciting the lines from Maine Pyar Kiya'?"
"Kya?", Maan turned around and looked at her in confusion.
"Maan! Udhar dekho!", Geet screeched and Maan turned around again.
"Geet! You really need to start speaking in English!", Maan ordered her.
"English?", Geet screeched, "That's all you care about! You are barging into my room unannounced..."
"Barging!", Maan commented sounding thoughtful, "You are starting to use new words! Good for you, Geet!"
Geet's jaw dropped open. He barged into... uff... entered my room unannounced when I am in towel and instead of apologizing he is lecturing me! Hey Babaji! I am going to kill him! She grabbed the nearest object, one of the books, and threw it at Maan's back, "Get out!", she growled, "Get out before I kill you!"
Maan turned around, "Geet! There is no need to be violent!"
BAM! The next book hit Maan square on his face, "GEET!", he roared.
"OUT!", Geet roared back as she lifted another book and threw that on Maan too.
Finally Maan got the hint and moved out. Geet ran after him shouting, "And if you came in without knocking again, I will cut you into pieces and feed you to the dogs! Get that?"
Saying her piece, Geet slammed the door.
Geet continued to laugh as she thought of that day. Since that day, Maan never entered her room without knocking, even if the door was left wide open and Geet was sitting in front of him smiling at him. Geet chuckled and then something else came to her mind and she frowned. Maan would always check in on me constantly every time. But why did he keep his distance from me when Viren arrived? Every evening Viren would arrive to spend time with me and Maan would vanish till Viren left. He won't come near my room, not even to scold me for exerting myself. Why? She remembered the first time she noticed this happening. It was the day after the discharge from hospital. Since the fire, Viren would come over to meet her in the evenings. His excuse was that he was getting bored but she knew he was here to cheer her up as she hated being restricted to almost no activity.
"Look Geet! Look what I found for you!", Viren spoke as he pulled out something from his bag.
Geet's eyes widened as she took in the thing in front of her, "Saanp seedi!", she squealed loudly.
"Errr... I assume that's the Indian name to this game!", Viren looked confused.
Geet giggled, "Yes! Saap means snake, seedi means ladder!"
"Oh! Of course!", Viren nodded, "Come! Lets play!"
Geet nodded and both chose their tokens. Just then Annie and Dev were passing by and Viren called them to join the game. Annie and Dev hesitated but when Geet pouted, they agreed. Next thing Geet knew all four were laughing and enjoying the game. Geet was watching her token come down a snake, when she felt the sensation of being watched. She looked up to see Maan passing by the window towards the door of her room. She smiled as she waited for him to knock and enter but her smile vanished when he simply passed by. Geet frowned.
And since that Geet started observing how Maan never entered her room as long as Viren was around. But why? Geet wondered. Did they hate each other? No! If so, then Viren would have told her. Family feud? No no! Daadima and Viren's Bua are good friends! Then what? Geet could not understand. Geet shrugged. She did not want to worry about that! She would rather worry about something else, like Maan sending her mixed signals. She smiled sadly as she remembered one of those instances...
And that's all for today folks,
Next up, the memories continue and then a song sequence comes!
