CHAPTER 15:
THE POWER OF THE EMPEROR...
Sareefuddin rushed, jolted and had almost stormed into the conference room, gasping, as he was too late to appear before His Majesty! Luckily he had managed to control his speed just before crossing the door of the room, and had sought the permission from the emperor to enter the room as per royal etiquette; "Hum...Hum andar aa sakte hay Shahenshah?!"[May I come in majesty?]
Jalal did not say anything looking at his gasping face; as sometimes he does not need any word to speak- his eyes are enough to shake the heart of any hardcore person like Sareefuddin. He just ran his eyes from Sareefuddin's head to toe without any type of expression in his face, and with a pin-drop silence inside the room.
Sareefuddin gulped. He tried to present his excuse of being late immediately. "Ohh kal uss paigam ko suljhane ki kosish karte karte subha ho gaya tha isliye..."[Actually it was late yesterday's night while finding the solution of that message so...]
Being late in a special conference specially declared by his majesty, coming after His Majesty's presence, is not less than a punishable offence in royal ethics. But the emperor did not say anything and nodded his head a little to give him permission. Sareefuddin guessed something crucial is being discussed, much more crucial than his late attendance... His heartbeat started to bit faster- has the next riot began in the capital? Or any big problem is waiting for them?
"Shaenshah, majhabi bagawat hone ka jo jo saabut hume mila hay usse yeh saaf zahir hota hay ki koi bohot bara saksiyat iski piche hay. Par o kon hay hume..."[Your Majesty, according to the proofs we got about the riot in can be confidently said that any great personality is behind this. But we don't know who is this... ]
"Hume yeh sab bar bar kyu sunna par raha hay? Kya karenge hum yeh sab sunke... kam ki baat kijie!" [Why I am getting hear these again and again? What will I do by hearing these... Talk about something worthy!]The emperor busted out in fury. The poor courtier who had said the sentence to start the interrupted discussion became nervous and stopped.
"Awam ko badshahat ki khilaf varkaya ja raha hay, majhaab ki dohai deke unki dil me nafraat ki beej bona ja raha hay, humari Hindustan ko jaalake raakh kar dene ki saajish baan raha hay, or aap sab log yeaha mere muh dekh rahe hay?"[The subjects are being heated against the empire, the seed of hatred is being planted in their heart in the name of religion, conspiracy is going on to burn my Hindustan and you all are watching my face here?] Jalal yelled out in anger after a long time regarding any political matter. "Koi jab man chaha nind se uthke yeaha taamasha dekhne aye hue hay (pointing at Sareefuddin) or koi ek hi baat pichle char din se daura rahe hay!! Kya lagta kya hay aap sabko? Jo yeh sab kar raha hay o khud aakar aapse kahega ki hum gunehgar hay hume saza do??"[Someone is coming to see the circus after rising late, and someone is telling the same thing for 4 days! What do u all think? The man doing these will come to you and will tell to punish him?]
"Hum kosish to kar rahe hay Shahenshah!!" [We are trying my lord!]Raja Todarmal tried to control him and got double shout from him... "Kya kosish? Kya hoga kosish karke? Kamiyadi chahiye hume!!!"[What try? I want success!!] His majesty lashed out. "Aap logo ko pata bhi hay ki agar ek majhaabi bagawat ho jaye to kya ho sakta hay?? Kitne maasoom jaane ja sakti hay? Kinto ke ghar ujaar sakta hay! Kitni ladkiyon ki zindegi tabha ho sakti hay aap logo ko andaaza bhi hay?"[Do you have any idea that what can happen if a big religious riot takes place? How many innocent can die? How many houses will burn?Do you have any idea that how many girl's life can be ruined?] He tried to control his voice after shouting these... After a moment he told "Jung me bohot berehem katal hota hay, bohot jaane jata hay, bohot maasoomyon ko bhi varfai karna hota hay! O hum man lete hay, kyu ki yeh bass ki bahar nehi jata hay! Par jab do aam insaan jhute majhaab ko bahana banake kisi dusre ki kahi hui baatyon ko zindegi ki ussul banake ek dusre ki gala katenge, ghar jalayenge or ek dusre ki maa-beheno ki izzat lootenge- o dahessat ki aag mere pure watan ko jala kar rakh dega!! Rokna hoga iss tabaahi ko!Abhi ke abhi inn sabke piche jo jo hay sabki naam chahie mujhe! Abhi ke Abhi!! "[Innocent people dies in wars too, I have to accept that as the thing does not go out of control that time. But when two common man will cut eachother's throat, will burn eachother's house and play with the honour of the women of their houses under the shelter of false religion, that destruction will burn my motherland!!We have to stop this destruction at any cost. I want each and every name behind this. By now! ]
The courtiers were quite impressed by the rant of the Emperor; rather their blood had boiled up. But from where they could have presented the name of the real mastermind at that time? So Raja Todarmal again stated, as only he has that personality and pragmatic thoughts to talk with his majesty when he is angry.
"Jo iss ke piche hay hume uska naam nehi pata hay abhi Shahenshah! Agra se jaasooso ne jo sandehabhajan ki talika veje hay, uaha ka har ek naam bohot bare byatitwon ke hay. Hum koi pramaan ke bina..." [We don't know surely who is behind this your majesty! The list of the suspects are sent, they all are the famous personalities. We cannot do anything without proof...]
"o fehrist parke sunayi jaye..." [Read the list aloud...]His Majesty ordered.
A subordinate came forward with the list and started to read that loudly. Sareefuddin, with special interest, keenly listened to that! O God! Those gumshoes had suspected right... The list includes al the priests of highest position including Sareefuddin's father Kwaja Moin too; and all the names are more or less connected with the conspiracy...
The emperor was too keenly listening to all the names. All are the names of the most learned and religious men of his capital. Jalal knows everyone personally, and he even knows that those orthodox old men do not like Jalal's virtues and policies. It is not only the clash of beliefs, it had become a fight of power- from the day Jalal had decided to divide the political and religious matters totally and took all the powers and control solely in his hand... No man can bear the reduction of power, but how can that grudge increase so much that those learned and religious aged men can stoop down too low to go against the nation and to shake hands with the enemies?
"Or kuch naam baki hay?" Jalal asked after the reading was done.
"Nehi Jahanpanha!" [No my lord!]
"Thik hay... Aziz Koka ko paigaam vejie ki yeh sare ke sare majhaab ki byapariyon ko griftaar ki jaye!!"[Ok. Send order to Aziz Koka to arrest those vendors of religion!!]
All was stunned to hear the order. Maybe how much hatred was in the voice of the emperor when the uttered vendor of religion, but they are some distinct and famous personalities of the nation... How can they be arrested without any valid reason?
"Parantu Shahenshah! Koi praman..." [But majesty, without any proof...]Todarmal said.
"Zaroorat nehi... Griftaar karke mughal kayed ka thora sa naamuna agar samne se dikhaya bhi jaye unhe to saabut aapne aap nikal ayega..." [No need. Proofs will come out automatically if some little samples are displayed to them after arresting.]Jalal's voice had a shivering cruelty that shook Sareefuddin...
"Par aap unhe aise hi kayed kaise kar sakte hay Shahenshah!" Sareef could not help but to protest. "Yeh kanoon ke khilaf hay. Aap aisa nehi kar sakte!" [This is against law. You can't do this!!]
The emperor looked at him with a cruel smile. "Kyu, aapke abbu hay Kwaja Moin sahab isliye?"[Why? As Kwaja Moin is your father?] he said. "Hum kayed kar sakte hay unhe Sareefuddin. Shahenshah hay hum... Kanoon humse chalta hay. Hume kanoon sikhane ki gustakhi maat kijie..."[I can arrest them Sareefuddin. I am the emperor. Law begins from me. Don't dare to teach me law.] His voice was too cold to bear.
"Mera matlaab hay ki..." Sareef stammered. "Awam me galaat paigaam ja sakta hay! Aam aadmiyon ka varosa mughal kanoon se uth sakta hay..."[I mean... it will spread wrong message in Nation. Common people's hope from law system can be gone forever...]
"Awam ko pata bhi kaise chalega?"[How will they know?] Jalal smirked most dangerously. "Raat ki andhere me jake sidha kayed me bandh karwa diya jayega... Fir, jyada kuch nehi, 3-4 ghanta agar srif ulta latkaya diya jaye to bhi saabut aapne aap ugalke bahar aa jayega! Par ha..."[They will be imprisoned at the dark night...Then, not much, hanging in opposite direction for 3-4 hours will take out the truth automatically! But yes...] He chuckled as if it was a funny thing. "Sab ke hi umar ho chukka hay, agar Khuda na kare koi achanak khuda ke pyare ho gaye to... Koi baat nehi! Andhere me lash ko thikane lagane me kitna waqt lagta hay!!"[All are old, God forbid if anyone dies then... No matter! How much time it will take to vanish the body in dark!]
"Shahenshah!!" Sareefuddin forgot for a while that with whom he is talking with in the tension and excitement. He almost shouted to him. "Aap aisa nehi kar sakte! " [You can't do this!]
"Hum kar sakte hay Sareefuddin... Bakhubi kar sakte hay. Awam ki bhalai ke liye hum kanoon banate hay, isliye unke liye hum usse tod bhi sakte hay! Badshah hay hum Hindustan ki..."[I can, obviously! I am the emperor of Hindustan...] He stood just in front of him and pronounced each and every word poignantly. "Aap rokenge hume??"[Will you stop me?]
"Aap ke hukum sarakho par mere sartaaj!"[Your order is ultimate my lord!] Sareefuddin uttered with the most displeasment in his voice. "Aap badshah hay, aap kuch bhi kar sakte hay!"[You are the majesty, you can do anything!]
"Baaja farmaya aapne."[You are correct.] Jalal smirked. "Kuch bhi! Yaad rakhna yeh... Or dobara sochiyega iss baat ko aapne abbu tak pauchane ki pahele!"[Anything! Keep it in mind...And think for the second time before sending this message to your father!]
"Hum aap ke gulam hay Jahapanah!"[I am your slave my lord!] Sareefuddin lowered his eyes down to hide the bitterness of his voice. "Agar humare waalid ne aapki khilaaf bagawat ki soche, to unki madat karna aap ke khilaf jana hoga! Hum o nehi karenge..." [If my father thinks for the rebellion against you, to help him will be a revolt for me! I will never do that...]
"Bohot khub!" [Very good!]Jalal patted his back with a victious smile in his lips. "Fakhr hay hume aap jaise kabil audhedaar pe..." [I am proud of the officers like you.]
Sareefuddin tried to smile with a disgusted look in his eyes. He could never think that he will plan for arrest all the suspects secretly and to give them third degree treatment without caring for any proof. How can he do this? And how will Sareefuddin save his father and his companions as well as himself now?
"Aap paigam ki paheli suljha liye?" [Have you solved the coded message?]Jalal asked suddenly. "Agar nehi, to jald se jald kijie... Aap jaiye."[If not, go and solve that.] He ordered.
Sareefuddin got lost after bidding the emperor. Jalal was starring at his path with a slight smirk at the corner of his lips. A guilty mind is always suspicious- and he knows it...
DAY BEFORE WEDDING...
It was just a day before of the main function of Maan Singh's wedding. All the members of the family were busy with the rituals of Pithi Dastoor'- a ritual where all applies turmeric on the bride-groom... Though it is usually not done much largely in groom's house compared to the bride's house, but still the royal family of Amer is itself so large and jolly that any small celebration turns into a grand festival along with all.
All the other ladies were busy of pulling each others leg and teasing Maan Singh, where Jodha was not with them. She was busy with a big work regarding the wedding, which is to take account of the gifts to be sent to the bride's house. A lot of precious gifts will be sent to the bride's house after some time, and Jodha had taken the responsibility of supervising that. Maybe it sounds silly, but it is not an easy work to manage that entire system in a wedding ceremony of the crown prince of Amer... The supervision of an expert is needed everywhere; and in the case of sending gift it is necessary to keep everything in account properly. Jodha, being an owner of god-gifted talant of event management, and also for her skills in accounts, used to take the responsibilities of everything- from giving away gifts to feeding the poors- in her own hands before marriage. If she gets chance, she will defeat each and every famous treader in case of business, her brothers used to tease her by saying this for her strong hold in accounts... Jodha used to enjoy this teasing, as she believed that she is not less in case of treading; but alas! When does a simple girl from a little royal family think of dealing with tread! Some dreams use to be so irrational that the dreamer herself does not want that to be true! However... In Agra there is a lot of expert people to take account of all these; still she had enough scope to practice her skills there. There is enough of the recreation for the women of Harem, the Meenabazaar itself was a good scheme of showing her talents as an entropenour; she had enough time too run charity trusts from her own; she used to be the event manager in the small celebrations taking place in the Harem, the world of the women. It is true that she had thought that she is being thrown inside a prison named Harem just after her marriage, but with time she had found the actual independence of life in her works, only in the world of women inside the grand fort!
But the festivals have become colourless from a year in Agra fort; Jodha has given up to join any happy festivals, or to take part in any event since one year... But today she herself has taken this responsibility on her shoulder from her grand-maa; perhaps to cover up the indifference that had reflected from her acts before-especially on the day of Grihashanti Puja. After a long time she has sat in front of the piles of the lots and lots of the golden plates of gifts with the pen and paper in hand, supervising all the things in her eyes and ordering the workers accordingly. And she was feeling much relaxed, much happy while being busy with them.
"Bangal se Maslin, Iraan se Resham, Kashmir se pashmina shawl, Dakkan se sone or hire ki gahene, Kaabul se panna or moti ki kaanbala, Bakshadan se kimti jeharatyon se bani naolakha haar... " Jodha smiled in her mind while going through the list of the gifts from the side of Mughal Empire for the wedding... The list seems to be infinite. She should be grateful to her husband for paying so much attention for her nephew's marriage, though she was not at all feeling anything to be thankful to him. The materialistic gifts reflects much more of the extravagant livelihood of the Mughals than the great heart of her husband; her husband's heartful blessings for her nephew is enough for his happy life according to her, which he gets from his Shahenshah every moment... But the heaps of the gifts suddenly reminded her the days of her marriage... That time the marriage was worse than a curse for her, she was feeling as she was being thrown in the fire of hell by her own father just to save her family and nation; and that time the heaps of the priceless gifts were put in front of her, the list was being read out aloud, echoing the ego and arrogance of their emperor in Jodha's ears... Jodha still remembers the touch of humiliation in the voice of Mahamanga while describing the cost of the jora'. Maybe the 20 years girl who was burning inside her had overreacted in the situation what she will never do now; but still she feels a bit proud for herself for having the courage of doing that at such situation!
"Kya soch rahi hay Jiji?" Sukanya had come to sit beside her after being tired of the same gossips and leg-pulling; she directly found out Jodha's thought too. "Yaad hay aapki bibah jiji, aapni bibah ki jore ko kaise jala diye the aap?" she said giggleing...
"Yaad nehi hoga?"[How can I forget?] Jodha joined in her laughter too. "Abhi bhi teri jijasa uss aag me jwal rahe hay!" [Your jijasa is still burning in that fire!]
"Accha????" [Really?]Sukanya made weird face to tease her.
"Or nehi to kya?" Jodha tried to look serious. "Bohot saukh se humse bibah kiye the o; Yudhh me jitke, baapusaa pe pabandhi lagake, kitne karnaame karke bibah ki mandaap par hume laye the! Or aab uski jwalan bhi bhugat rahe hay!" [Or what? He did so many things to bring me at wedding hall! And still now is burning it that inflammation!]
"Pati ko agar uss jwalan me jalte hue naa dekhi jaye to dampatya me sukh kaisa?"[What is the enjoyment in married life if the husband does not burn?] Sukanya touched Jodha's chin. "Kash apni pati ko prem ki aag me jalane ka yeh prakriya hume bhi pata hota jiji! Humara wala to bilkul bhiga hua hay! Na jwalta hay, na jwalata hay!"[Perhaps I had also known this process jiji! Mine is totally wet and boring! Neither burns nor causes burn!]
"Jyada mat bol Sukanya;"[Don't say much Sukanya;] Jodha acted to scold her as elder sister. "Ek patnibrat pati mili hay na, iss liye bohot anand aata hay pati ke naam pe durnaam karne me hay na? Asli jwalan kya hota hay agar pata hota to ro ro ke adhi ho jati itne din me, agar meri jaisi 5000 sauten ke sath ghar karna hota to samjhi?"[Your husband has only one wife, so you love to defame your husband. If you had known what is the pain of real burn like me then you would have been halved by shedding tears, if your husband had 5000 more too! ]She bent her lips. "Jab aankho ki samne aapni pati kisi or sundari ki kataksh se mohit hokar usse nazar hata na paye to kaisa lagta hay pata hay?"[Do you know how it feels when your own husband becomes mesmerized for any other woman in front of your eyes? ]
"Chahe kisiki bhi kataksh se mohit kyu na ho jijasa, unke nigahe to humesha aap pe hi tiki raheti hay... Dekhe nehi kya humne?" [Maybe my jijasa be mesmerized by anyother eyes, his eyes are always fixed on you.]Sukanya became the advocate of her jijasa.
"Bohot paksh le rahi hay na aapni jijasa ki?"[So you are advocating for your jijasa?] Jodha pulled her ear with affection. "Ek baat samajh le, Ek yeh Jodha Bai hi hay jo unhe inti varsho se jhel rahi hay!!"[Make it clear, only this Jodha Bai is bearing him from years!]
"Jhel rahi hay?? Achha???" [bearing him? Really??]Sukanya laughed out terribly. "Waise yeh to hona hi hay jijisa; aapke bina or kon unhe jhelne' ki khsmata rakhenge? Aapne to unki niyantran ki dor aapni haat se jane hi nehi deti!"[That is bound to happen jijisa;Who else will bear' him instead of you? You don't let the control to loose...]
"Tu bhi na!!" Jodha cut her. "Hum kyu niyantran karenge unhe?"[You! Why will I control him?]
"Aap jyada banie maat!" Sukanya told. "Hume o prakriya bataiye jisse aap jijasa ki upar raaj kar rahi hay! Nehi to agar meri bhi sautan aaye kabhi to hum kaise unki nigahe aapne upar khichke rakh payenge?"[Don't act too much! Tell me the tactics of controlling your husband. Else how would I snatch my husband's eyes to me if he gets married again afterward?]
"Hum kon hote hay raaj karne wale..." Jodha, who was full of fun just before moment, seemed to be lost now in her words. "Ek bishal purush hay o, ek bishal budhi, hriday or byaktitwa ki adhikari. Unhe pehechanne me hi meri sari jivan beet jayegi; raaj karna to dur ki baat hay! Bohot log aise hay jinhe lagta hay ki o unke dimag me raaj karte hay; kyu ki o log unhe abhi pahechan hi nehi paye!" Her voice was immersing in the emotion of mesmerization. "O raaj karne ke liye janm liye hay Sukanya, unpe koi kaise raaj kar sakta hay? Sayang niyati bhi unpe aapni adhikaar nehi jaata sakti. Aapni niyati ki die hue badhayon ko bhi paar karke bijayi honge humari shahenshah! " [Who am I to control him? He is a great man, with a great intelet and personality. I will spend my whole life to understand him; controlling is far distant. There are many people who things that they controls over his majesty's brain; as they have not known him! He has born to be a king, how can someone else reign on him? The destiny itself is unable to control him. My emperor will break all the barriers of destiny too!]
Sukanya firstly could not understand the sudden change of mood in Jodha's voice. She started giggling again to hear Jodha's effortless praisings for her husband. "Aapki shahenshah dunia pe raaj karne ke liye janm liye hay Jiji, or aap unpe raaj karne ke liye janm liye hay!"[Your emperor has born to rein the world, and you have born to reign on him.]
"Hum to bohot sadharan hay Sukanya, bohot samanya hay! Hume kaha aata hay raaj karna!" Jodha smiled. "Hum unke niyantrak nehi, unke sahadharmini hay! Agar sachme aapni pati ke hriday ki rani hona chahti ho na," she touched her chin. "To pahele aapni hriday unke liye samarpit kar do... Dekhna, us nihswarth samarpan ke badle tumhe unke samarpit hriday mil jayega! "[I am very simple Sukanya, very small! How would I know to reign! I am his life-partner, not his controller! If you want to be the queen of your husband's heart, then surrender your heart to him... You will get back his surrendered heart at the exchange of your selfless surrender!]
"Yuhi aapne aapko samarpit kar denge? Aapni swatantrata khoke?" Sukanya did not agree. "Prem ko bhi to aapni swabhimann ke sima se baandhna abasyak hota hay na jiji?"[I will surrender myself forgetting my independence? Does not love need a barrier of self-respect?]
"Prem to anant hay Sukanya... Swabhimann to uski samne tuchh hay!"[Love is infinite...Self-respect is a mere thing in front of that!] Jodha smiled. "Jab prem me aapne aapko leen kar paoge, aapni swabhimann ko bhula paoge, sampurn samarpit kar paoge aapne aapko, tab purn hogi tumhari prem!" [When you will be ready to mingle yourself in love, forgetting the self-righteousness will surrender yourself completely, your love will be content.]
"Aapne kiye hay aapni hriday ki purn samarpan? "[Have you surrendered your heart fully?] Sukanya was enjoying all the love lessons of her sister.
"Hum?" Jodha laughed. "Kaha na humne, ki bohot samanya hay hum... Aapni tuchh swabhimaan or mariyada ki baadhao ko laanghke nihswarth samarpan karna kaise ayega hume? Hum to sangsaar ki dor me bandhi ek sadharan naari hay; prem ki jogan kaha ban paye hum!"[Me? Hadn't I told you that I am very small? How can I know how to surrender in love forgetting the barriers of mere status and self-righteousness?I am a mere girl of the world; where have I become a jogan of love!]
"Aap kitni bari bari baate karke hume uljhan me daal die jiji!" Sukanya told. "Prem iti jatil thori na hay!"[You are confusing me in words. Is love this much complex?]
"Prem to bohot saral hay Sukanya!" Jodha said. "Prem to hriday se hota hay; baaato se thori na hota hay! Prem karna nehi hota hay, o to ho jata hay! Humne bhi kabhi soche the kya ki hum ek din tumhare jijasa pe aapni hriday..." [Love is very simple Sukanya! Love happens from heart, not from words! Love happens, is not done! Had I ever tought that I will give my heart to your Jijasa...] she suddenly stopped, smiling...
"Bohot prem karti hay na aap jijasa se?" [You love Jijasa a lot. Isn't it?]Sukanya asked in an innocent tone. Jodha lowered her eyes to hide her shyness and nodded. Sukanya smiled and told "Or o bhi bohot prem karte hay aapse! Hay na?"[And loves you too. Isn't it?]
"Sayad humse bhi adhik..." [Maybe more than me...]Jodha's voice was now sinking.
"Dhanya ho aapki or jijasa ki prem jiji!" Sukanya became overjoyed. She hold her sister's hand. "Humesha aise hi rahena, eksath, ek duje ke prem me bileen hoke..."[Your love is great sister!Be like this always, together, drowning in the love...]
"Eksath!" Jodha sighed! "Nehi Sukanya... Kabhi kabhi apne jivan se adhik prem karne wale premiyan bhi ek nehi ho sakte...sayad!" [Together! No Sukanya, sometimes even the greatest lovers cannot be together...Perhaps!]
Sukanya, who was super happy today to see her jiji in such a light and joyful mood, now easily figured out the sudden despair in Jodha's voice. She at once held her hand, saying "Yeh sach nehi hay jiji.Ap dono sath hi hay!"[That is not true. You are together!]
Jodha did not say anything but held her sister's hand for a moment, then started her unfinished work again... Maybe each and every lovestory does not end in togetherness; but they were destined to be together; she knew that she is destined to be with that man to whom she had surrendered her heart long ago; she is destined to stand by him like a rock when he falls down, she knows it is her responsibility to not to let him break down by the strike of destiny, even if that strike finishes herself to the core; she cannot let her love to be defeated in the game with destiny, even if the destiny destroys her... But still she could not! She is a mere woman at the end, not a yogini of love!
Sukanya was going to tell something more, but since bhabisa had called both of them for the rituals, they had to go at the venue. As an aunt Jodha blessed her nephew after applying turmeric on him; she kept her hands on his head, closed her eyes and murmured in a sophisticated way "Aapne hriday jiske hriday me arpan kar payo, aisi jivansangini mile tumhe!" [May you get such a life-partner to whom you can surrender your heart!]
After Pithi Dastoor', the custom of Janev' took place. The groom maan Singh sat to perform the yagna to wear the sacred saffron robe which symbolizes the acceptation of the responsibilities of marriage. After the grand offering was over, according to the old customs, Maan Singh started acting to flee from the bond of marriage hook by crook. As all knows, the very decent and very calm Maan Singh is actually a wicked brat from inside; so all could have guessed from earlier that what a drama he is going to make onward in the ritual of Janev'. He himself took the responsibility of entertaining the full hall of people on his shoulders, and his maternal uncle, whose duty is to make the groom understood for marriage had to do nothing much in this drama.
In this environment of pure joy and laughter, Jodha's eyes were searching for only one person... He was not present in the function. Maybe he was too busy to attend these rituals today. Something big is cooking up under the eyes of the administration of Hindustan; and that is serious enough to snatch the sleep of the emperor from his eyes. The incident of last night in Bharat's room, trial of stealing a mere paper by a trespasser and codded message in that paper does not smell good. Something filthy is going to happen soon in the politics of Hindustan and it is the examination of the emperor- whether he is capable to win it or not! Jodha has no clue about what is going to happen, as the tension is being suppressed under the glee of festival inside the house here; but still the heat of the suppressed fire can be felt by all... They have heard about the codded message via the pigeon killed by Bharat; pigeon- the bird of peace! The Aman ki parindey' of that half-burnt letter! That letter which her husband had hidden safely in a small box... the letter with some strange messages which had apparently no link with the circumstances, and with a weird figure drawn at the backside... That was surely another code sent to his majesty from any unknown friend friend the enemy-land. But who is she? Jodha could not forget the verses of the letter, could not have helped herself but to nurture those statements inside mind, trying to decode that... Though she has nothing to worry about it, as she is confident for her husband that he is capable enough to solve all these troubles; but being a royal blood she cannot sit aloof without thinking all these...
The hall was howling in pure joy and glee of the festive environment. Jodha suddenly felt a strange pain in her heart while witnessing all the enjoyments surrounded by her. All, with their happy hearts, are present there except him, and most probably none is missing his majestic presence in this place. He bears all the burden of the happiness of all these hearts to ensure this happiness; but is there anyone who ever even had thought to think about what goes inside his heart? None knows how the very active and politically correct man, who is busy with one after another meeting from the morning, was breaking down in a numb agony just before some hours in front of her! His heart bangs head inside while screaming in a wild despair, but he cannot express it... not even he is fortunate enough to drop a tear to reduce that unbearable pain like her! Has anyone ever thought about his pain? None cares, none! Maybe Jodha herself does not care even...maybe she is too selfish to come out from her own grief, own self-respect; she is a mere woman, not a yogini of love!
Jodha suddenly felt that she is missing him from heart! Her heart is dying to have a glimpse of him now!
He wanted to say many things. He wanted to open his heart in front of her, who is dying to cry loudly keeping her head on his chest for a long year unknowingly! But he could not break the invisible barrier that had been built in between them... When again will he get the courage? When will she get the chance? Will they ever be able to start their journey towards a new life?
A SMALL JOKE...
"Kaha gaya! Kaha rakha hay maine usse!!!!" [Where is that? Where had I kept that!!] Sareefuddin was sweating badly in intolerable anxiety. His blood pressure and pulse rate must have risen 10 times of normal and he could have a heart attack at any moment... He had almost took out all the goods out of the trunks and chests they had in the room, creating a chaos inside the room to search the particular thing. That is the key of the life of Sareefuddin by now; the key of decoding the secret messages.
The poetry book of Ameer Khusru, the book enriched with the codes of the secret messages via which he and Abul Mali of Kabul is setting a concrete plan of destroy Hindustan and Jalal's reign, is not in it place!
"Aise nehi milega! Aise nehi! Sochna parega ki humne akhri baar kaha rakha tha uss kitab ko!" [Not like this!I have to think before that where had I seen the book last time!]Sareefuddin murmured in palpitation. He clearly remembered that he had kept the book on the reading desk last night before going to the bed, thinking to check the code again at the morning. In morning he rose late and so had to run to the conference hall to attain the meeting without noticing the book. After listening to the sudden order of the emperor of arresting the suspects at the dark night and applying third degree on them, he became too nervous to think about the coded letter; he was busy to make arrangements to send the news secretly to his father as soon as possible, before his majesty's order reaches to Agra. Now it was necessary too to decode the message and more than that to send an alarm to Kabul of postponing the plan as the main brains behind this have to be in underground for some days. But when he entered into his room, he did not see the book anywhere! Not even inside the chest!!!
Where can that go!!!
While banging his head with his strong hands, he watched her little daughter Mahetab at the door; she is starring at his weird gestures forgetting the doll that was still at her hand. He didn't know why, but all his furstation poured upon her. He went to the door fuming with anger, clutched the small hands of his daughter making her hell terrified and shouted "Tumne chupaya hay mera kitab?? Bolo???"[You have hidden it? Say!] Perhaps in excitement he forgot that his poor daughter cannot hear.
"Bolo?? Kaha rakhi ho mere kitab? Sab kuch khelne ki cheez hota hay? Himmat kaise hui mere cheezon me haat dene ki??"[Say?? Where have you kept the book? Is everything a toy? How dare you to touch my things?] While shouting on her Sareef suddenly remembered that his daughter is deaf, when she was constantly shedding tears from her beautiful eyes in fear; as she didn't know the reason of this sudden scolding, and he toned down a bit. He does not know the proper sign languages to talk with her, but still he tried to make her understood his words by gesture. He himself knows that there is the least chance of finding the fat bound book from a 2 years old baby girl, but still he had hoped against hope, perhaps she had taken that for playing; as that is the safest thought he can have by now!!
But Mahetab was too terrified with her father. Her father is an image of fear to her, who always shouts and scolds her for no reason, and beats her mother in almost every night! The sudden gesture of love after a harsh treatment made her too feared to respond. Sareef became impatient again and shouted, "batayegi yeah nehi!!!" [Will you say or not??]
"Kya hua?" [What happened?]
Mahetab ran to her mother's lap, the most secured shelter for her at once. Bakshi took her in her arms to give her warmth and asked to her husband. "Aap khamokha Mahetab ko daant kyu rahe hay? Or hozre ki yeh kya halat banaya hay??" [Why are you scolding Mahetab for no reason? And what has you done with the room?]
Sareef controlled his excited breath and toned down a bit. "Ek kitab tha yeaha par. O dhund rahe the!! Dekha hay aapne usse?"[Here was a book. I was searching for that! Have you seen it?]
"Yeah Allah! Aapko kabse kitabyon me itni dilchaspi aa gaya ki ek shayeri ki kitab ke liye khamakha Mahetab pe chilla rahe hay? Kitab hay ki koi chupaiyi hui paigaam!"[O my god! Nowadays you got such interests in books that you were shouting at Mahetab for a mere book? Is it a book or any secret message? ] Bakshi laughed out to courageously in front of her husband for the first time in life. Her laughter had a strong pinch of taunt that hit Sareef's ear sharply. What happened to the timid Bakshi Banu today?
"Bakshi!!" Sareef wanted to raise his voice, but he did not. Instead of that he asked her most normally that he could "Aapne dekhi hay o kitab? Aamir Khusroo ki tamam acchhe shayeriyon ki kitab hay o!"[Have you seen that? That was a good collection of the good poetries of Aamir Khusroo.]
"Kafi din se dekh rahe hay aapko shayeri me zaroorat se jyada dilchaspi aa gaya hay! Baat kya hay?"[I am noticing from a few days that your interest in poetries have increased more than need! What is the reason?] Bakshi cross questioned him instead in a light tone, full of taunts. "Koi naya mashuka mil gaya hay kya aapko jise shayeri ke bina dil nehi lagta?"[Have you met any girl who is not impressed without the poem?]
"Kya arab sarab bakti chali ja rahi ho!!"[What nonsense!] Sareefuddin uttered with disgust! "Tumne dekha yeah nehi o batao!"[Have you seen it or not?]
"Dekhe to the!"[I had seen, maybe...] Bakshi answered indifferently and busied herself to keep the things back in their places. Sareefuddin never ever has borne this type of harmless indifference from his timid, nincompoop, and disgusting wife. His hand was dying to pull her hairs at once to remind her position back, but still he did not, as he needs to be cool and controlled for managing all the hazards. So he is now even ready to roam behind his wife all the day to get the book back.
"Kya paheli me uljha rahi hay! Bata dijie na kaha dekhe hay!"[Why are you creating confusion? Tell me.] Sareefuddin's egoistic voice was touching a slight of plea now... Bakshi smiled.
"Nehi hay iss hojre me..."[that is not in this room...] She answered.
"Acche se puch rahe hay iss liye jyada sar pe char rahi ho??"[Since I am talking decently you are trying to get on my head?] Sareef grinded his teeth and grabbed her hands. "Batao kaha hay o kitab!" [Tell where the book is!]
"Bhaijaan ko diya hay humne!!"[I have given it to Bhaijaan!! ] Bakshi's voice was viciously cold.
THASSS!!!!!
The slap was hard enough to make Bakshi misbalanced and fall down. But this is not very unfamiliar to her! Before she could manage her dress and stand up from ground her husband pulled her hand harshly to make her stand. She kept her eyes straight to her husband, without a single sign of fright. She had a smirk hiding in her lips; and Sareef was feeling frightened from this look of his wife.
Sareefuddin was gazing to Bakshi's face with red eyes, but was unable to say anything! So Bakshi had to continue, and at start she broke out into a loud laughter...
"Ek kitab diye hay aapni bhaijaan ko, iss liye itna gussa?? Kitab hi to hay!"[I have only given a mere book to my brother. Why are you getting so much angry?? It is only a book!]
Perhaps Sareef himself was unable to feel actually what is going on inside him! The book, the key of the coded letter has reached at Jalal's hand! The greatest fear of his dream has become true, and Bakshi, his own Bakshi, whom he uses like crushed furniture is laughing at him so viciously!!
"K..kyu diya hay unhe!" [W..why have you given to him!]After a long time Sareef was able to utter a sentence.
"Humari bhaijaan ko bohot saukh hay na insab me, to maine socha ki kyu na unhe yeh kitab parne ke liye de du..."[My brother loves all these, so I thought to give that to him for reading...] her voice was piercing Sareefuddin's ears. "Kya pata unhe kuch mil jaye unn shayeriyon se...mera matlab kuch acchha mil jaye waqt bitane ke liye..."[Who knows what he finds out in the poetries...I mean what good time-pass can he find... ] She was smiling as if it was a very funny thing!
"Mujhse puche bagyar mere cheez pe haat kaise diye aapne??"[How dare you to touch my belongings without taking my permission??] Sareef roared in vain anger. His anger was the reflection of his dead fright, and Bakshi did not fear from that! The only way to suppress Bakshi is now perhaps assaulting her physically, which he spontaneously does to show his supremacy over her; but today Sareefuddin could not even get that courage, Bakshi's cold indifference after the tight slap was more powerful than his regular violence which did not permit him to assault her again! Bakshi meanwhile freed her hand from his clutch and started to set her hairs.
"Kya hua? Baat kan tak pouch nehi raha hay?"[What? Hasn't my word reach to your ear?] Sareef again shouted, perhaps to get a confidence inside him. "Baheri ho gayi ho aapni beti ki tarha? Jyada aukaat mat dikhao! Tumhari beti ko mar ke gaar denge hum!! "[have you become deaf like your daughter? Don't show me much attitude! I will bury your daughter!!]
"Uss kitab ke liye aapni beti ko maar denge?Utna taklif uthane ki koi zarurat nehi! "[You will kill your own daughter for sake of a mere book? No need to take this trouble!] Bakshi said while smiling innocently. "Hum jake abhi bhaijaan se o kitab le ate hay! Batayenge unhe ki kaise unke behenoyi ek mamuli si kitab ke liye dimag kharap kar rahe hay! Bina wajay haat pair chala rahe hay sabke upar! Fir sayad itni jyada taklif uthana na pare aapko!" [I am going to brother for taking the book back! I will tell him that how his brother in-law is making me crazy for a mere book and throwing his limbs on everyone without any reason. Then perhaps you will not have to take all the troubles like these!]
"Le aayoge o kitab?"[Will you really get that book back? ] Sareeffuddin first became overwhelmed with his wife's gratitude for a moment, but at once he could catch the taunt! He screeched and almost strangulated her. "Mujhe dara rahi hay aapni bhaijaan ke naam se?? Gale ki awaz bohot bar gaya hay tara aaj! Aisa haal karenge ki kabhi muh kholne ki layak nehi rahegi!!!"[You are threatening me in the name of your brother? Your voice has become louder today! I will not let you to open your mouth again!]
"Fir to mujhe bhi taklif uthana nehi parega!" [Then even I will not have to take any trouble!]Bakshi stated while coughing. "Bhaijaan khud chalke aayenge iss hojre tak! Fir kitab mangenge yeah maafi aap samaz lena!!!"[My brother himself will walk to this room! Then you decide what you will be asking from him- Book or forgiveness!]
Sareeffuddin instantly took his hand back with utter shock. Bakshi's calm eyes were threatening him, and he was frightened! He did not talk anything more, turned up the nearby teapoy and went off the room like a storm!
Bakshi was starring at his path. The tears that she had suppressed inside her was now trying to come out; but she had a great peace in her heart. Without saying a word more, she came to her daughter, who was trembling in fear witnessing the incident, and hugged her. She has her daughter, and she cannot let her childhood to be ruined by this blasphemous animal... Everything has its limit!!
*FLASHBACK______________________
"Tumhe yaakin hay ki tum jo kahe rahe ho o thik hay Bakshi?" [Are you sure that what you are talking about is true Bakshi?]Jalal said with measured anxiety in his voice while turned up the pages of the book of red bound cover. "Yehi e o kitab hay jiske jarie Sareefuddin uss paigam ko suljhane ki kosish kar raha tha?" [Is this the book with which Sareefuddin was trying to solve the message?]
"Haa Bhaijaan. Yehi hay! Kaafi dino se o iss ke piche lage hue hay! Kal bhi ek kagaj leke kuch milane ki kosish kar rahe the...O so jane ke baad humne iss kitab ko chhupake rakh diya tha, abhi aapke paas leke aayi hoo..." [Yes Brother, This is! He is behind this book from a few days! Even at yesterday night he was trying to matching something into this with a paper in hand...I had hid the book after he went to sleep, and now I have come to you with that.]Bakshi said.
"Kaafi dino se?"[From a few days?]Jalal asked while running his eyes on the pages of the book. He cannot read, so no question of going through the book; but still as he has keen interest in literature, he can guess the genre of the book by seeing it vividly. "Toh tumhare motabik Sareefuddin inn shayeriyon ke taal me kuch bara kar raha hay kaafi dino se!"[So according to you Sareefuddin is trying to do something big with the rhymes of the poetry!] His eyes suddenly shone. "Sayeyi ki taal me! Aman ke parinde maut ka sandesh leke ayega shayeri ki taal me!!! Toh yeh hay pura kahani!"[Rhythm of poetry! The bird of peace will come with the sentence of death in the rhythm of poem!!! So this is the whole story!] He chuckled in the sudden joy of victory, and hugged his sister in excitement! "Agar tumhe shaq tha to pehele ki kyu nehi lekar aye yeh kitab mere paas!" [If you has doubt why you did not come to me earlier!]He said!
Bakshi lowered her eyes to hide the shame from her eyes. How will she confess to her so much caring brother that to the very end she was much caring about the life of her foul husband than the respect and reputation of her brother, her family, her dynasty, her nation! Will he ever understand the helplessness of Bakshi Banu, that why the princess of Mughal dynasty had to think so much, had to gain courage after such a great hesitation to open the conspiracy of a traitor to her own brother? But at last she did, she has stood up for her own, for her own daughter, for the justice; against the cruel, heartless, devil husband!
Perhaps Bakshi's brother could sense the unsaid words from the drop of tear that rolled down from her cheek. He wiped her tears with his palms and kissed her head. "Bohot bahadur ho tum Bakshi! Bohot bahadur or hoshiyaar bhi!"[You are very brave Bakshi! Brave and smart too!] He uttered.
Just before going out of the room after taking permission and bidding his majesty, Bakshi suddenly turned back again. Jalal was lost in some thoughts regarding his next strategy to trap the traitors; he looked back feeling the presence of Bakshi.
"Kuch or kahena hay Bakshi?"[Do you want to say anything more Bakshi?] He asked.
"Haa...Hume..." Bakshi could not hold her sob. "Hume maaf kar dijie bhaijaan!! Bohot dard diye hay humne aapko! Maaf kar dijie!!!" [Please forgive me brother! I have given you a lot of pain!!Forgive me!]She almost broke down, her voice drowned in tear. Jalal hurried to come to her and embraced his frail sister with all his affection. "Tum mujhe dard do, aisa kabhi ho sakta hay Bakshi?Tum to mere choti si behen ho..."[Is it ever possible that you will give me pain? You are my little sister...] He tried to console her by caressing her hair. Bakshi shivered a bit in the embracement of his strong masculine arms suddenly. These are the arms that have protected her from every adversities of her life, tried to shield her from all the strikes of her fortune and what she has done for him! She picked her eyes up to look her brother. His eyes were full of pure love and affection for his sister whom he really loves from his heart. How can Bakshi forget the hurt torment in those eyes that day when she was caught by him after her first direct involvement in the conspiracy with her husband! How can she forget the agonized surprise in those eyes when she stood against her brother for her husband while he was trying to take proper steps against her humiliation? How had she been so much selfish that for the sake of herself she did not ever thought about her selfless brother? She might endure all the tortures and insults for her own but when an outsider dares to abuse her own brother only from the courage of being her husband, how she endured it for the peace of her own household! Bakshi could not hold her sob anymore and broke down in her brother's chest, repeating "Maaf kar dijie hume!!"[Forgive me!]
Perhaps Jalal had understood the unspoken words of his sister. "Maafi to hume tumse maangni chhiye bakshi!!"[I should seek forgiveness from you!] He murmured. "Sayad umar or tajurbe kam tha humara isliye aapki shadi ke waqt ek accha sipahi or acche insaan ke bich ki bara sa deewar dekh nehi paye the! Der kar di hum yeah samajhne me ki banduk ki jor se insaan ka dil nehi maapa ja sakta! Or uss galat faisle ki hisab tum aapni zindegi se chukka rahi ho!"[I was younger and less experienced at the time of your marriage, so perhaps could not see the big wall between a good soldier and a good man! I got much late to understand that the heart cannot be measured by the strength of his gun! And you are paying the price of that wrong decision with your life! ]
"Nehi" Bakshi uttered, shaking her head. "Hum gunehgaar hay bhaijaan, gunehgaar hay hum! Gunah ko sahena or uska sath dena or bhi bara gunah hota hay or hum..."[I am guilty brother! To bear the sin is even a greater sin and I...]
"Bhul jao Bakshi." [Forget this Bakshi.]Jalal held her shoulders to make her standing straight. The spontaneous authority in his voice was sounding like the ultimate truth to Bakshi. "Jab tak bhul na jaoge, aage nehi bar paoye... Tumhe zindegi me aage barna hay Bakshi! Mahetab ko leke tumhe aage barna hay! Kon hota hay Sareefuddin tumhe aapni zindegi ki bahao se dur karne wale? Tum vul nehi sakte Bakshi ki tum kon ho! Mughal Saltanant ki khoon ho tum; Shahenshah Humayun ki beti, Shahenshah Akbar ki behen... Mughal Shahezadi Bakshi Banu Begam ko aapne zindegi jine ke liye kisi lakir ki zarurat nehi hay!" [Unless you forget you will not be able to move forward! You have to move forward in your life Bakshi! You have to move forward with Mahetab! Who is Sareefuddin to distant you from the spontaneous flow of your life? You cannot forget who you are! You are the blood of Mughal dynasty; the daughter of emperor Humayun, the sister of Emperor Akbar... Mughal princess Bakshi Banu does not need any stick to live her life!]
Bakshi bowed down her head in respect; her brother kissed her head for blessings. "Jab tak tumhare yeh Bhaijaan zinda hay, jabtak Mughal saltanant ki sher Jalaluddhin Muhammad Akbar zinda hay kisi bhi bheriya me itni taqat nehi hay ki o Mughal Shahenshah ki behen or uski bacchi ke upar aankh uthake bhi dekh sake. Bhul jao ki tum kisiki biwi ho. Tum Mughal Shahezadi ho, Shah Humayun ki poti ki maa ho... Tum Bakshi Banu ho. Or yehi tumhari sabse bara pahechan hay!"[Till your brother is alive, till the lion of Mughal dynasty emperor Jalaluddin Muhammad Akbar is alive no fox will dare to raise his eyes on the sister and her daughter of the emperor of Mughals. Forget that you are the wife of anyone. You are the mughal princess, you are the mother of the daughter-in-law of emperor Humayun...You are Bakshi Banu. And this is the greatest introduction of you!]
