CHAPTER 17. MARBLES IN THE MOUTH AND FIRE IN THE ROOM!
CRASH!
Maan growled as he smashed a block of ice with his hand.
CRASH!
Maan broke the wood pile with his leg.
And the session of breaking wood blocks and ice blocks continued as Maan tried to get his focus away from his nightmare. But try as he might, he could not stop the image of Geet going away with someone out of his head. Another round of smashing continued but his mind refused to stop thinking about Geet. How can a chit of a girl turn his life upside down so easily? Maan wondered. Annoyed and angered, he slammed his hand on a nearby wall. Why? Why Geet are you haunting me so much? No! Maan refused to allow Geet so much importance in his life! Let her go with whoever she wants to! I don't care! Maan turned back and continued to smash things.
Geet was munching on an apple when the noise of something breaking stopped her. What was that noise? Curious to know what was breaking, she walked over to the room she passed by many times but never entered. But today Geet entered only to be astonished to see broken blocks of wood and half melted ice all over with curtains fluttering all around. What kind of room is this? She raised her eyes and her breath was taken. With his back towards her, there stood Maan Singh Khurana dressed in trousers ready to break an ice block. She watched with wide eyes and bated breath as his hand raised in the air, the muscles of his arm and back rippling due to the movement, and then he brought it down in one fluid motion breaking the block in one move. Geet gasped at the spectacle in front of her.
Maan stilled as he heard someone gasp behind him. Who was disturbing him right now? Already Maan had been annoyed since morning but now his anger rose more. As the curtains around the room fluttered, Maan slipped away.
Where did he go? Geet looked around in shock. He was just there a second ago. Curious and alarmed, Geet started looking around. A few seconds passed but Geet could not find Maan at all. Turning around, she was about to walk away, when someone grabbed her hand and pulled her away. Geet did not understand what happened. A second ago, Maan was missing and now she was sandwiched between Maan and the wall. She watched him with wide eyes.
Maan glared at the intruder. Geet! Of course who else would it be! Maan fought the urge to roll his eyes and glared at the girl, "Kya kar rahi thi tum yahaan? What were you doing here right now?"
Geet simply stared at Maan. His intense eyes staring at her were evoking feelings that overwhelmed her and all Geet could do was stare at Maan.
"Geet!", Maan roared and Geet jerked in shock but was still unable to look away from his eyes.
"I am asking you once again! What were you doing here?", Maan asked.
And Geet still in shock mumbled out, "I was observing you!"
Maan looked at her with wide eyes, "What did you say?"
"I said I was observing you!", Geet replied.
"Why?", Maan asked in confusion.
"Because watching you break that block in one movement was mesmerizing!", Geet replied still lost in the intensity of his eyes.
"WHAT!", Maan roared and Geet finally realised what was happening. Her eyes widened as she realised what she had said as replies to his questions. Hey Babaji! Yeh maine kya bol diya? Haan! Seeing Maan break that block was quite eye catching but that does not mean I should blurt that out to him. Stupid Geet!
Geet berated herself just as Maan pulled away from her realizing that the area he was about to step in was mine field of emotions. No! No! He cannot fall for her! Remember your promise Maan! You will distance yourself from her! Shaking his head, he stumbled away out of the room.
Geet stared at his retreating back in confusion unsure of what to do next. The moment that they shared had left her disorientated. Yes! She was falling for him! But she had been for a while! But what is the use of falling for him when he would never reciprocate that love? Geet knew that much! His hatred towards lower status was blatant enough for her to know that her love will never be reciprocated.
Tear blurred her eyes but Geet wiped them off. Nahi Geet! No use crying about unrequited love, broken hearts and arrogant teachers! Geet! Focus on your dreams! Fulfil them! And most important of all, try not to fall for Maan Singh Khurana anymore than you have!
"I don't care Dev!", Maan roared in his room, "Today you are handling Geet's training!"
"But why?", Dev cried out in confusion. For so many days Bro trained Geet. And now suddenly, he wants me to take over! Has Bro gone mad?
"Don't ask me rubbish questions! You want Geet to win right? Then go and train her!", Maan growled out.
Dev shrugged but walked off to the study room. Its official! The Great Business Tycoon has gone mad!
"Hmmm...", Geet stared at Dev with wide eyes.
"Yes Geet! Speak!", Dev coaxed.
Geet just blinked.
"Come on you have to try!", Dev urged.
But Geet simply stared at him. Hey Babaji! After filling my mouth with marbles he is asking me to speak! Is he mad?
"Come on Geet! Say! My name is Geet!", Dev ordered.
"Mmm...mmm...", Geet tried to speak but suddenly her eyes went wide and she started clawing at her throat.
"Geet! Whats wrong? Why are you scratching your throat? Your throat is itching?", Dev asked.
Geet shook her head all the while moaning. Suddenly, she spat all the marbles out but continued to choke.
"Geet! Kya hua?", Dev asked in alarm but Geet was unable to reply. She continued to claw at her throat and writhe on her seat.
Dev's eyes widened and he blurted out, "Did you swallow a marble? Did the marble get stuck in your throat?"
Finally Geet nodded as she continued to moan and writhe.
Dev got up right away and tried the Heimlich maneuver just as Maan who was passing by entered the room with worry on his features.
"What the hell!", Maan roared just as Geet spat out the marble and started taking deep breaths.
"Yeh kya behudgi hai Dev! What kind of training is this?", Maan scolded Dev. His heart was beating hard at the thought of Geet dying to the throat choking and he could not stop himself from let his anger out at Dev.
"Bro! Don't blame me! You were the one who ordered me to train her! I know nothing about training people; you are the one who knows about it! So I went and googled and saw a movie where the girl was trained with marbles in her mouth so I tried that!", Dev defended himself.
Maan resisted the urge to slap his forehead and took deep breaths to calm himself. Maan! Killing your younger brother is not right even though the said brother deserves it.
Once Maan was calm enough to not cause bodily harm to Dev, he spat out, "OUT!"
"Bro?", Dev looked at him in confusion.
"I said OUT!", Maan roared, "I will train Geet from now on! Or else tomorrow I will find her lying dead somewhere thanks to you! OUT!"
Dev scrambled off scared by Maan's anger while Geet who was finally back to taking normal breath looked at Maan with eagerness. Maan Sir is so better than Dev Sir as teacher!
It was late night and Geet was getting ready to hit the bed. As she was about to start her nightly ritual, the light went away. Geet huffed. While light going quite common in Dilli she did not think that the rich people were plagued by it. But now it seemed even rich people were not immune to it. Geet shrugged. Unlike rich people, she was used to it. She went to her bag and pulled out some candles. Lighting them up around the room, she went back to what she was doing earlier. Soon, she was done and before she knew it, she had fallen asleep amongst all the candles surrounding her. If only she had not gone to asleep so easily, she would have seen one candle falling and lighting the curtains nearby. And she also would have noticed the curtain catching fire rapidly and spreading all over the room.
Maan growled as he paced in the room. He was beyond annoyed today. First and foremost, his plan to stay away from Geet went to pieces before he even had breakfast due to Geet and his encounter in the exercise room. And then his determination to stay away was also gone once he realised that leaving the traning to Dev was nothing short of disaster. How the guy finished college Maan did not know!
And then in the office, Maan could not focus on work thanks to Geet invading his thoughts. And as if that was not enough, the light went off while he was working in study and the invertor and generator both were not working. For God's sake, can't one day go the way he wanted it to go? Maan resisted the urge to bang his head on the desk.
Just when Maan thought his day cannot go any worse, Dev came running in with eyes wide and looking totally frantic.
Now what? Maan thought as he glared at his younger brother.
But Dev ignored his glare and said something that stopped Maan's heart for a second.
"Bro! Geet's room is on fire! With Geet inside!", Dev shouted and Maan froze.
For a second he could not comprehend anything, his senses went numb and he heard a rushing roar in his ears. But soon the moment passed and Maan scrambled out of his chair. His heart was now beating hard at the thought of his Geet in danger, his legs stumbling to get out of the room, his hands sweating and his eyes wide.
Maan reached the room where everything was burning and in between all this was Geet still sleeping peacefully. Annie seemed to be screaming her name and just as Maan reached her, Geet woke up.
Geet looked around in shock. Everywhere there was fire. Even the main door frame was covered with fire thanks to the curtains hanging there. Geet could not believe what she was seeing. Everything around her was burning except the bed she was sitting.
As Geet frantically looked here and there for some escape the fire continued to burn. Maan realised that Geet would pretty soon die with smoke inhalation. He joined Dev and Annie in calling for her name and that is when Geet looked up and noticed them, "MAAN SIR!" Geet stood up on the bed, her eyes full of fear.
"Geet! Wahin rehna! Don't get down!", Maan ordered as he looked around trying to think how to get in.
Beside him, Dev shouted, "Geet! Just few minutes! Fire Brigade is coming!"
Geet nodded at his words but continued to look around with fire. She grabbed her bag near her pillow and held it close. Nothing else was salvageable in the room but rest of the things around the room was not important to her. But her bag had her mobile, her documents and her certificates, the things that will help her fulfill her dreams. Clutching it to her chest, she stood in between the bed.
Maan, Annie and Dev waited outside the room, wanting to give her the comfort of being nearby. Just then Annie noticed something, "Bhai! Geet is fainting!"
Maan looked towards Geet just as Geet fainted and fell on the bed.
"The smoke is starting to affect her!", Dev mumbled out in horror.
"We cannot wait for Fire Brigade anymore! By the time they come, the smoke would have damaged her lungs badly!", Maan whispered.
"Phir?", Annie was close to tears.
Maan's worried expression turned to determination, "I will go in!"
"Bhai!"
"Bro! No!"
Both Annie and Dev followed Maan trying to convince himself not to go in the fire but Maan refused to listen. He walked to the nearby room and grabbed some thick blankets. Armed with the blankets Maan trudged to Geet's room. As he reached the room, he covered himself with one of them and walked into the fire.
Annie and Dev could not see inside due to the smoke all over the room and with worry and fear both waited outside for Maan and Geet to come out. As the seconds passed, both waited with bated breath. Annie was holding Dev for her dear life. Dev tried to comfort his sister but even he was worried for his brother. After a while, finally Maan and Geet came out. Maan held an unconscious Geet in his arms with her bag tightly clenched in her hands. Dev and Annie heaved a sigh of relief and followed Maan as he took Geet to a nearby room.
By the time Geet woke up, the fire brigade had arrived and put out the fire. Now the Khuranas were waiting for the Doctor to arrive. Geet woke up to see all three Khurana siblings looking at her in worry.
"Maan!", Geet whispered and Maan walked to her right away.
"Haan bolo Geet!", Maan whispered as he sat by her and held her hand.
Geet felt her heart skip a beat as she saw the concern on Maan's face.
Before anyone could say anything the Doctor arrived. Dev and Maan left the room as the Doctor started checking. Once he came out, he informed them that while the smoke did effect Geet, it was not fatal and she would recover soon. Maan and Dev were thankful and entered the room where Annie was narrating to Geet about how heroically Maan saved her life by jumping into the fire.
Geet raised her eyes to meet Maan's just as he walked in. The gratitude, the wonder and the admiration in her eyes left Maan breathless. After that, even though Dev and Annie chattered with Geet, Maan simply stood by the side and stared at her, thankful that she was alive. And the whole time Geet might have spoken to Dev and Annie but her eyes kept on going to Maan with gratitude and tender care shining through them.
Just then there was a commotion outside and the Khurana siblings went out of the room to see it. Geet sighed as she relaxed on the bed. Maan saved her life. She could not believe it. She chuckled as she realised that behind the hard and tough exterior there was a man who was ready to give his life for the person he cared for. Wait! Does that mean he cares for me? Geet blushed. Maybe! Maybe my love won't be as unrequited as I thought! Maan! You touched my heart with one such gesture! Just when I wondered why I was starting to fall for you, you came and once again won my heart all over!
"Err... Hello!", the man on the door spoke just as Dev, Maan and Annie reached the hall. It was next day morning. Geet's training was cancelled for next few days as she was put on bedrest. Restricted to her new room, she was upstairs reading some books after enjoying breakfast in her room with Dev and Annie few minutes ago.
As Maan, Dev and Annie walked to meet the man, one of the servants standing nearby spoke up, "Saabji! Yeh Geet Madam se milne aaye hain!"
"Aap kaun?", Dev asked and the man smiled.
"I am Viren! Viren Vadhera!", the man replied.
Annie grinned, "Oh my! You must be Swamini Vadhera's nephew!"
"Yes I am!", Viren smiled as he shook hands with Annie, "How do you know her?"
Annie smirked mischievously, "Oh! I met her when I was living with Daadima. Both Daadima and Miss. Vadhera seemed to get together on regular basis to moan about their certain relatives who were single stubborn bachelors refusing to marry!"
While Dev and Maan looked confused, Viren blushed knowing exactly whom his Bua was moaning about.
"Waise how come you are here?", Dev asked after he and Maan were introduced by Annie to Viren.
"Actually, I am friends with Geet! I heard about the fire and came to see her!", Viren replied and his hands which were behind him were brought ahead and all saw him holding a bouquet of roses.
Maan's eyes widened. This must be the guy with whom she went out day before yesterday. He glared at Viren but his glare was unnoticed by anyone. Annie took Viren to visit Geet, delighted to know that Viren was the guy with whom Geet went on date.
Dev and Maan followed them up where Geet grinned excitedly at seeing Viren. She never gets this happy to see me, Maan huffed mentally. Geet took the bouquet excitedly all the while introducing Viren as her best friend to rest of them. As Geet excitedly chatted with Viren, Maan wondered why it hurt him so much to see Geet so happy with Viren.
Just then Viren spoke to him, "By the way, Maan, Geet just told me that you saved her life! Thank you for that! Geet is a very special friend to me and any damage to her would have affected me too!"
Maan simply nodded and unable to see the scene before him, Maan stormed away.
Annie and Geet were confused as to the abrupt retreat of Maan but Dev simply smirked. Once again you are jealous Bro!
As Dev watched his brother walk away, Annie spoke up, "I am sorry for Maan Bhai's rudeness!" She looked uncomfortable.
Viren shrugged her apology away, "Its ok! Geet told me enough about Maan's nature that I am not offended! I know how rude MSK can be! Of course only today, after hearing Geet tell me how Maan saved her, I realised that MSK might be rude and arrogant. But when necessary, he can be counted upon!"
Saying this he smiled at Geet who smiled back.
