Warrior High: Chapter 2

Snowfall. Parth looked outside his window to see the world draped in thick, white blanket. The snowflakes swirled in the wind in a beautiful dance until disappearing into the already thick carpet of snow on the ground. Outside, cars and buildings were just amorphous figures covered in white. The school building of Warrior High, which Parth could see from his room, with its tall bell towers and pointed roof were adorned with thick layers of snow. It felt like the world was asleep.

The boys in his dormitory were still sleeping, cuddled in the warmth of their blankets. Charlie's breathe came out in soft whistles as he slept. Below him, Siddharth Rajput, was sleeping soundly, unaffected by the noise above him. That guy could sleep through a hurricane. Parth's best friend, Utkarsh, who was in the bed above him, was still asleep too, his eyelids tightly shut. The nightmares had decreased steadily; most nights Utkarsh slept through without waking up with a jolt. Parth had been there, in the days that followed after Utkarsh's assault. Utkarsh had been terrified, quiet. His rage would come in bouts. Somedays he would be quiet as a mouse, only speaking when spoken to. On other days, everything seemed to irk him, even Parth, and Utkarsh would lash out at anything that was in front of him. Utkarsh did not like being touched. If one of his teachers would come too close to him, he'd sweat profusely and step back. He didn't like being looked in the eye and would usually prefer to meet his gaze on the ground. Utkarsh was a work in progress, and Parth had remained patient. Parth was determined to help Utkarsh get through the trauma of his assault. It was the least he could do when Utkarsh deserved so much more. Parth decided to let him sleep some more. It had been so long since Utkarsh had had such a restful sleep.

Parth quickly got dressed and stepped outside. He was wearing sweatpants and thick jacket with mittens. The hallway was deserted. His footsteps echoed as he walked through the empty corridor. Parth had no destination in mind, he just wanted to step his foot in snow, and hear the soft, powdery snow squeak in his feet as he walked. The snowflakes landed on his jacket and melted instantly. Parth snorted, his breaths coming out in puffs of cloud. He liked the feel of wind on his face, it was not too chilly, but chilly enough to heighten all his senses. It was a good thing that Warrior High was in Dehradun. They never got snow in Mumbai, where Parth used to live. Parth looked around him, lost in this moment, the wind blew the snow towards him, and he could feel snowflakes hitting his clothes like feathers.

If Veebha and I had a pillow fight, it would feel just like this.

Parth was surprised by how easily his mind diverted towards her, and how often. It was like he was possessed by something. Sometimes, it was terrifying to not be able to name what was happening to him. He did not like not knowing, not being in control, and thoughts of Veebha was doing exactly that to him: rendering him powerless.

Parth decided to go back to his room, Utkarsh must have woken by now and be looking for him. He didn't like leaving Utkarsh alone. For now, the world needed to be kind to Utkarsh, so that he could heal and Parth was adamant to make sure that happened.

Just as he had assumed, Utkarsh was awake and looking around the room for Parth. Utkarsh gave a relieved smile as soon as he saw Parth.

"Yaar tu ka chala gaya tha. Mujhe to laga tuh mujhe chod kar chalagaya."

Parth smiled, and slapped Utkarsh on back.

"Kya bakwash kar raha hain. Tu toh mera yaar hain. Tujhe kaise chod kar jaa sakta hun."

Utkarsh giggled and got down from his bed.

"Achha ho gaya, ki aaj school canceled ho gaya. Chal aaj tu, mein, Niti aur Siyali milkar snowman banate hain."

Parth shook his head, amused.

"Mujhe toh dhang se drawing bhi karna nahi aata hain yaar, kaise snowman banayenge."

"Balwanji! aap bhi na!" Utkarsh teased, reenacting their infamous teacher or pradhyapak,Ms Kamini Maam's dialogue.

The boys laughed and headed outside.
