Chapter 9
That evening, Swara stood in their bedroom, staring out of the window and nibbling her thumb nervously.
Sanskaar came out of the bathroom, his hair still damp and clinging to his head. He had flung on his navy blue slacks and powder blue T shirt so carelessly, his collar was wet. He flung the towel on his shoulder and moved to the mirror.
Swara came towards him eagerly.
"Toh bolo na! Kya kaha Laksh ne? Did he say anything about Ragini and himself?"
Sanskaar met her eyes in the mirror and shook his head, dropping the towel on the dressing stool. "I tried to talk to him at the office, but it was never the right moment. I went to his cabin and he had to see a visitor. Then I called him to meet me for a coffee, but then I had to cancel because of a worker delegation."
Frowning, Swara absently pulled Sanskaar to sit on the bench in front of her. She took the towel and rubbed his hair so vigorously, he was moved to protest.
"Oww! Swara!"
"Sorry!" she said, in that same abstracted manner, "your hair is wet, you'll catch a cold."
She leaned forward and straightened his collar, smoothing it out properly. He held her hand and took the towel away from her. His hair stood spiky from the rough treatment it had received.
"Did Ragini say anything?" he asked.
Swara pulled her mouth down. "Yes she did!"
Sanskaar looked up at her, waiting. "And? bolo!?"
Swara bit her lip. "They seem to have done it! Last night."
Sanskaar opened his mouth and closed it again... "Seriously?!"
"Yep!" Swara said, nodding.
"GOD!!!" he said, standing up, clutching his head, "But why on earth did he DO that?! DAMMIT, LAKSH! What's wrong with him? Holy Mother of God!"
He took an agitated turn about the room and came to a stop with his hands to his face, anguished. He turned again to Swara, who looked troubled herself.
"Did Ragini say what led up to it? Why did he suddenly decide not only that the marriage was back on, but that he would... GOD, what a mess!" he exploded again.
"No, she didn't say anything about all that," Swara told him, "But she was acting super shy all day and dropping hints, you know... telling Parineeta bhabhi that she was going to take an afternoon nap because she hardly got any sleep last night, and I think she asked Badi Maa for the name of a good gynecologist to consult about contraception..."
"Oh My God!" said Sanskaar, utterly revolted. "What a girl she is! Do you think she seduced him, or something? The thing is that Lucky didn't look unhappy or shocked this morning. He was fairly calm at work as well. He's behaving really peculiarly!"
"I know!" exclaimed Swara, wringing her hands, "And that has gotten me worried in another way, Sanskaar! Ragini is in love with Laksh and this sudden move... why would Laksh suddenly decide on this? Unless he suddenly thought that Ragini was available... and that he might as well..."
"Come on, Swara! What are you saying?!" Sanskaar looked shocked.
"We know that he's not in love with her, Sanskaar! And even if he decided to give the marriage another go... this decision to sleep with her is so sudden... I don't know, I'm worried for her."
"FOR HER?!! Excuse me? She's probably ensnared him into this, Swara! You're really blind about your sister sometimes!" Sanskaar was hot and bothered now.
"Ok, ok Sanskaar, calm down. I'm sorry - I just spoke what was on my mind. But one thing is very clear - we need to speak to Laksh. Please ask him to come here, to our room? We're likely to be overheard anywhere else!"
Sanskaar rubbed a hand over his face and nodded. "Ok, I'll find him. We do really need to talk."
