Chapter 13

Mantu stopped in his tracks too as he saw Uma just a few feet away from them. The stricken look on Uma's face told Amaya that she was shocked to see Mantu and her together like this. Amaya saw Uma's gaze travel from the mangalsutra that Amaya wore up to the sindoor that Mantu had just filled into the parting of her hair.

A vicious mix of emotions chased across Uma's features as the realization that Amaya and Mantu were married settled into her consciousness. The first reaction was denial. This couldn't be. Even the Maha Panditji had said that Mantu was meant to be hers. And she had known him and loved him longer. Then why was it that.. How could.. Partly formed questions whirred around her head and made her heart ache as she fixed Amaya with a deathly glare.

Mantu slid his hand down Amaya's arm and intertwined his fingers with hers as he held her hand. "Come Amaya," he said in a serious tone as he dragged Amaya away. Amaya wanted to talk to Uma. No, she did not want to rub her victory in Uma's face. Mantu wasn't something to be won. She did not consider their confession of love or this marriage her victory over Uma. To her, it was her life. Mantu was her life. Not something to be won or lost. She only wanted Uma to realize that maybe it was time she understood that you could not force anyone to love you. Even destiny favors true love over anything that people claim is pre-written. She truly, genuinely wanted to make an effort to salvage the amazing friendship that Mantu and Uma had shared for so many years. But Mantu simply led her away before she could do so.

"Mantu.. Uma.." Amaya tried to tell him that they should talk to Uma, at least he should but Mantu cut her off, "Lets go Amaya. The Uma I used to know is no longer here and I don't want to talk to anyone else." Amaya sat behind him on the bike and they rode off. Behind them, Uma threw away the Pooja thaali she had brought and stormed off.

When Rama came into the room with breakfast, Rachita had just stepped out of the shower and was getting ready. He took a moment to watch her. She looked tired, not just physically. Her eyes, her stance, her features seemed tired and defeated. He followed the movements of her hand as she reached for something on the dresser. Her mangalsutra lay on the dresser and her fingers paused over it for a long moment. She picked it up and looked at it for long. Then she opened a drawer and put it in before closing the drawer again and reaching for her hair brush. Rama noticed that her sindoor had also gotten washed away, probably when she had showered. A dull ache settled in his heart when he noticed she made no move to put her sindoor on either. There was no sign that she was his, in any way. He ignored the ache and smiled as he asked her, "Are you going somewhere Rachitaji?"

Rachita turned at that and said, "I am going to class." Rama thought about it for a minute. After all the scandal that had happened at their wedding yesterday, he was worried that someone would say something to her if she went out today and that would upset her even more. Maybe it would be best if she waited it out for a couple of days till the scandal died down. "Why don't you take some time off Rachitaji?" he asked. Rachita turned at that, "Are you planning to stop me from working?" Rama flinched at the accusation. Why was she always so quick to assume the worst of him? "Why do you always misunderstand me Rachitaji? I was just concerned that someone might say something to upset you after what happened.." Rachita felt bad that she'd snapped at Rama like that. "I am sorry. I just.. I need to get away.. From all this.. From everyone.. Its suffocating.. I need to breathe.. I need something to distract myself.. I need to go to work," she said, stressing on need. "If that's what you wish," Rama said as he placed the tray of food on the side table and turned to leave. "Will you be coming to class today?" Rachita asked on impulse. Rama turned towards her again, "Only if you want me to. I know you want to get away from everything and everyone for a while. I won't bother you if that's what you want." He gave her a sad but genuinely warm smile and left. Rachita let out a sigh of relief after Rama left and reached for her bag.

Mantu pulled up in front of the marriage registrar's office. "Amaya, we should get our marriage registered first before we do anything else. Why don't you go in and start filling out the forms while I park the bike?" Mantu told Amaya and she nodded her head as she got off the bike. When he went in a few minutes later, she was busy filling out the form. "All done! Just sign here. Where do we turn this in?" "Give it to me, I'll turn it in," Mantu said taking the form from her, signing his name and heading to the counter. Amaya followed him. Just as he was about to hand the form at the counter, Mantu noticed something and took the form back. "What happened? Did I forget something?" Amaya asked. "No. You didn't forget anything. Just a little correction," he said smiling as he opened the pen and struck out the name Mantu from the Groom's name column.

"Mantu! What are you doing? That's the column for the Groom's name. It should have your name!" Amaya tried to tell him. Unmindful of her protest, Mantu started to strike out his name wherever it appeared on the form and write something else instead. When he was done, Amaya snatched the form and looked at it. He had written Abhimanyu Shrivastav in bold strokes after crossing out Mantu. Amaya looked at him puzzled, "Why are you writing your friend's name on our marriage registration application?" Mantu smiled and said, "Abhimanyu Shrivastav at your service Madam." Amaya looked at him open mouthed, "You are Abhimanyu Shrivastav?" Mantu nodded and placed a finger under her chin to close her mouth as he turned to the counter and submitted the form.

"It'll take about two weeks. And we need additional documents. Here's the list of documents we'll need and yes, when you come back in two weeks, you need to bring two witnesses too to sign and they need to have a Government issued ID proof," the clerk instructed them. Mantu and Amaya nodded their heads and turned to leave when the clerk called them, "While you are here, you can also turn in the application to officially change Madam's name from Amaya Mathur to Amaya Abhimayu Shrivastav. You can get that form from counter 5 over there," the clerk pointed them in the direction.

Amaya and Mantu looked at each other. Before Amaya could say anything at all, Mantu stepped in and said, "No. We don't plan to change her name." "But all women take their husband's surname after marriage," the clerk stated slightly confused. "Yes. But I don't want her to," Mantu said smiling as he wished the clerk a good day and left with Amaya in tow.

"Mantu.." Amaya called out to him when they stepped out of the building. Mantu turned to her, "You don't have to say anything Amaya. I know how much your Baba's name means to you. You are and always will remain Amaya Mathur. I don't need my name to be attached to yours to feel or know that you are mine. Our hearts are one and that's all that matters," Mantu said squeezing her hand reassuringly.

"Mantu.. I will take your name.." Amaya said softly. "Amaya, I just told you you don't have to," Mantu said. "Not because I have to, but because I want to. I want your name to be attached to mine. But before I give up Superman's name, I want to clear it of all the dirt its been dragged into. My dad was framed, Mantu. He could never have done something like this, ever. And the day I clear his name of all this scandal, that day, I will take your name. I promise," Amaya said. "We.." Mantu corrected her. Amaya looked at him questioningly. "The day we clear his name.. I have never met your dad and I don't know anything about him. But I know one thing for sure.. If he has raised such strong, principled daughters, he couldn't have done anything unscrupulous. I have faith in your trust Amaya. We will clear his name. And soon.." Mantu assured Amaya and Amaya hugged him tight.

As they got onto the bike, Amaya said, "Mantu, isn't this place close to my office? Can we quickly stop by there too? I want to apply for a leave extension. I'd only taken a week off for Rachi di's wedding. I'm planning to take another week off so.. You know.. We can spend some time together." Mantu smiled and said, "Okay Madam! As you say. Actually, even I was thinking of stopping by the office and seeing if Mukherjee dada might have another contract for me. That way we could be working together again." Amaya's smile increased in wattage at that, "I was thinking the exact same thing. In fact I was thinking of ways to convince you to do just that!" "You don't have to convince me anymore Amaya. I am already convinced."

"Amaya! I thought you said you needed time for your sister's wedding? But what is this? You got married?! Is everything is okay?" Mukherjee dada asked when Amaya stepped into his cabin. "Yes, yes dada. Everything is alright. It just so happened that I got married too at the same time as my sister," Amaya explained slightly awkwardly. "Oh.." Mukherjee dada responded, not quite understanding how or what had happened. "Dada.. I need a leave extension. As you can see, I just got married and I need some time to get settled into my new home and life," Amaya said. "Sure, sure. Have you filled out the leave application?" Dada asked. "Yes," Amaya said, handing the form to him. "Good. Dev Babu is in today. I will take this to him right away and get his signature," Dada said, taking the form from Amaya. "By the way, you should have brought your husband along too. I would like to meet him," Dada said as he got up from his chair. "He is here. Shall I call him in?" Amaya asked, her eyes twinkling with mischief. "Yes. Yes. Sure! What is your husband's name?" Dada asked. "Abhimanyu Shrivastav," Amaya replied. "Nice. Very powerful name. Abhimanyu! Call him. Ask him to come in," Dada said settling back into his chair.

Amaya went to the door and ushered Mantu in. The look on Mukherjee Dada's face was priceless. He stared from Mantu to Amaya and back. "Amaya.. This is Mantu.." Dada said, completely befuddled. "Mahadev Dada!" Mantu greeted him smiling widely. "Yes Dada. I know. Mantu is my husband. I married Mantu," Amaya replied, unable to contain her giggle as she saw the surprised expression on Dada's face. "Oh the two of you! Writing your little love story right beneath my nose and I never doubted you for a minute," Dada said breaking into a smile. "Come here Mantu," Dada said, pulling Mantu into a hug and congratulating both of them. Mantu offered him the sweets they'd brought to office to share the news of their wedding with everyone and Mukherjee dada accepted it happily. "Dada, I have a request. If you haven't found anyone for that earlier contract you'd offered me, can I take that offer up now?" Mantu asked. "Yes. Yes. Sure! We haven't found anyone as skilled and hardworking as you yet so that contract is still open. I must have the papers for it somewhere here. Let me take it to Dev Babu too along with Amaya's application for leave extension. Come with me," Dada said as he took the papers and headed out the door with Mantu and Amaya following him.

"What is this Mukherjee?" was Dev's response when Mukherjee dada handed him the sweets and papers and told him about Amaya and Mantu's wedding. If Mukherjee was taken aback by the curtness of Dev's response and lack of acknowledging Mantu and Amaya, he hid it pretty well. "Sir, Amaya Mathur.. I mean Amaya Shrivastav is requesting to extend her leave. She just got married Sir and wanted some time off. The other set of papers are to hand the contract of assembling computers for our Jamnagar clients to Mantu, I mean Abhimanyu Shrivastav," he explained.

Dev looked up at Amaya and Mantu. He fixed Mantu with a stern gaze. Mantu was the one who had spoiled his plan to defame and destroy Sneha Mathur. Oh sure, the truth about Rachita's paternity did come out in front of anyone, but it did no real damage. Because, at the end of the day, not one but two of Sneha's daughters had gotten married. He had wanted her to forever live in the cloak of shame. He had planned to spoil any alliance that the girls got with this trump card of his and make Sneha cry tears of shame every time. Even Rachita's kidnapping that he had so brilliantly planned and executed to tarnish the image of the Mathurs and Chaubeys throughout Banaras now lay in ruins because this guy had convinced Rama to marry her.

"What do you think Mukherjee? That I have opened a shelter home here? That people can take as much time off as they want and any road side hooligan can come in here and get a job?" Dev asked, his tone laced with icy anger. Both Mantu and Amaya flinched at the insult. "Sir, Mantu is no road side hooligan. He is a very skilled, intelligent and smart guy. He has been an asset to this company before. We wouldn't have been able to deliver our last consignment of computers on time if it weren't for him," Amaya stepped in in Mantu's defense. "Just because he plays around with computer parts in his free time and managed to build a computer or two, does not make him qualified. And I do not have any space for anyone who isn't qualified on my team," Dev said as he tossed the contract papers away.

"Sir, I respect the fact that you want only the best for your company but I would strongly suggest that you take a look at my CV before passing judgements. If you look at my CV, which this company has on file and I submitted when applying for the first contract here, you will get to know that I did not learn to assemble and program computers by playing around with a bunch of parts at home. I graduated with honors in Computer Engineering from Banaras Hindu University. In fact, I was a gold medalist and the university topper. I can speak 6 foreign languages and help you deal with your foreign client base as well. I have excellent references from all the other places and people I have worked for. But if you would like to stick to your judgements, please feel free to do so. This is, after all, your company and I am no one to tell you how to run it. Thank you for your time. Mahadev!" Mantu said as he turned on his heel. "I will wait for you outside Amaya," he said before leaving.

Amaya had been staring at him open mouthed as he listed off his credentials to Dev and as he left the office, she started to follow him in a daze. "You don't get a leave extension. Make sure you get here at 8 AM sharp tomorrow or I won't think twice about firing you," Dev threatened Amaya. Amaya glared at Dev in response and followed Mantu out.

Especially love the fact that he so authoritavely said that they aren't filing for a name change for Amaya because he felt he had the right to decide that he doesn't want his wife to part from her father's name!!!
