"Simran's sister. She is a bit younger than you. She is staying with us for a month. She is a nice girl Arjun. Very pretty too. Rishtha pakka karoon?" Karann winked at him.
Arjun hesitated for a moment. Not at all because he had any interest in this new character in their lifes. Unless..it was the Riya that he had been looking for. He had always believed in destiny. Could his girl be at his own house? There were chances but he decided not to take a risk.
"No way!" he shook his head to add more effect to his words. He could always change his mind if it was his Riya.
"Kyun? Pyaar vyaar ka chakkar he kya?" Karan asked him sounding very interested.
"No..i mean yes..I don't know. Im confused" he admitted.
"Seems like true love to me"
"Really?" Karan asked sounding a bit sarcastic. He didn't doubt his feelings. Whatever he felt for her was true. And strong. But he wondered what his Bhai would say when he finds out that he had only met her once. The fact that he only knew her name wasn't going to help him too. But if it was his Bhai's Saali..things might go exactly the way he wanted.
"There is no true love without confusion mere Bhai" karan declared, sounding very much like a love guru.
Arjun laughed. His laughter died down as he realized that they had reached their house. He gulped. He had no idea what awaited him there. A clasp of thunder shook the skies. It still hadn't stopped raining. As soon as he set his foot outside the car he felt it. She was here.
"Tera naam maine liya hain yahaan
Mujhe yaad tune kiya hai vahaan"
Riya frowned as she tugged at her huge bag. It was her Di's idea to use a bag to transport her stuff to the other room. She took one last look at the room and rested her eyes on the photograph which she had been staring at first thing, every morning she woke up in that room. Arjun suryakanth Rawate's picture smiled at her. He looked younger and happier. There was none of the pain or frustration that she saw in those eyes that night. She assumed this picture was taken when he was in college or something. If she told her friends that she had been staying in Arjun suryakanth Rawate's room for the past one month they would laugh until tears formed in their eyes.
Not only was she staying in his room, she was related to him too. Her Di's Devar. She had been Arjun suryakanth Rawate's biggest fan since the first interview of his was released. There was something truthful and haunting about his voice which had captivated her since the first time she heard it. Was it possible to fall in love with a voice? Yes it was. It was her dream to see him face to face. But when that dream got fulfilled..She had been very upset after meeting him that night. She left for Mumbai Very next day itself no longer wanting to have anything to do with him or the city. As soon as she reached her home she took down his poster on her wall and collected all his interview CD's which she had with her. She had planned to throw them all away but something stopped her. So, grudgingly she put them away. She still felt embarrassed as she remembered how she had cried. She questioned herself about it several times. Why did she cry?
She realized that her idealistic nature must have something to do with it. She had imagined him to be like his voice. It that was even possible. But he had turned out to be the exact opposite. She had been horrified when she found out that her Di was planning to marry his brother. She had observed her future Jiju very carefully for any sigh of Arjun-ness. But Karan Suryakanth Rawate was nothing like his brother. Soft spoken, sweet and caring, he was perfect for his sister.
She had expected to see Arjun at her Di's marriage. After all he was her Jiju's Bhai right? But he didn't turn up. She heard several people enquiring about him and saw the ashen faces of the Rawate's as they tried to answer the questions. She felt confused. Did he have a problem with his family? Is that why had turned out to be so bitter? She pushed all those thoughts away scolding herself for making up excuses to justify his behavior.
But it turned out that her hunch was right. After the wedding, she had walked into find Sunaina his mother crying. She immediately went to her side and hugged her, trying her best to comfort her. She had come to love Sunaina aunty like her mother. Sobbing, she told her about her son Arjun. She told her all about his life starting with school days. She laughed at all the mischief he had done and Sunaina smiled too as she remembered those days. But both of them turned grim again as she talked about his fight with father. Her breath caught as she wondered how his family would react when they come to know about his current life.
That night she had went to her room and opened her bag. She had brought his CD's and poster with her to her di's sasuraal. After about 3 months she played the CD's. She closed her eyes at the sound of his voice. How had she have missed the Dard in his voice?, she had thought.
One year passed with no news from him. Riya
silently worried about him but she didn't say anything about their encounter to anyone in his family. He didn't want any of them to worry more that they did now. She still didn't approve of his lifestyle but she realized that he wasn't so bad.
For the past month she had been staying with her Di. To her delight and terror she was assigned to Arjun's room. The guest room was undergoing renovation. And when the renovation was done his father's friend had joined them, thus allowing Riya to stay in Arjun's room. She learnt more about him with every passing day she spent in his room. He was interested in boxing and working out. His punching bag and dumbells were enough to tell her that. There were not many books there but the existing ones were about crime nd police department. She also found his diary. He hadn't seemed like the type to keep a diary so she had been surprised to see it. She thought twice before opening it. After all it was his private thoughts. But she was curious to know the real Arjun suryakanth Rawate.
She remembered feeling like a stalker going through his private contents and room like this. But what she read amazed her. He was her replica. He was playful, naughty and energetic nd ready to help others without thinking once nd really a responsible one At the same time he was kind, helpful and his perceptiveness amazed her. She had felt a sense of sadness as she once again replayed her encounter with him. Now she felt as if she knew him more than anyone else. A stupid thought, she knew. But she felt so nevertheless.
Today Arjun was coming back. And his Bua had half asked half ordered her to shift to the guest room before Arjun's arrival. She dragged the bag of clothes to her new room and collapsed on the bed, feeling unnaturally tired. She wondered if she should stay in her room that day. She was sure that he had forgotten her. After all she was one among a million girls who must be dying for him. But did they know the real Arjun suryakanth Rawate? No, she was not talking about the monster she had met at delhi. She was referring to the boy who had left his house to make his dreams come true. She rolled around to face his photo, just like she always did when she thought about him. But she realized that it had been part of her old room. She considered it for some time and decided that Arjun was not going to miss one tiny photograph.
She immediately got up and made her way to Arjun's room. She had no time to waste as he and jiju would reach soon. She swiped his photograph from the table and not reducing her speed banged into someone. Their foreheads banged against each other and her eyes fluttered close in pain. She gripped the photograph tighter with her hand and used the other to touch her forehead, to inspect it for any bumps. But a pair of warm hands brushed her hand off and touched her forehead checking for injuries. She shuddered at the touch. This was clearly not her Jiju. So she forced her eyes open and looked at the tall and confident figure in front of her.
Riya's mouth fell open in shock. If she hadn't always been praised for having a photographic memory she would never have believed that this was Arjun. She had expected his changed avatar to shock everyone there but the guy before her looked exactly the same as he did when he left the house. He had grown a bit more muscular, tanner and taller but it was his face that counted. He had lost the unshaven look and cut his hair. His eyes sparkled with amusement as he checked her forehead. This tipped her off that he was very aware of the fact that she was staring at him. She stopped, somehow managing to tear her eyes away from him. His hands reluctantly left her forehead while his eyes came to rest on her face. She suddenly remembered about his photograph which she had with her. She jerked her hand behind her in an attempt to hide it from him. But he noticed her sudden movement and snatched the photograph away from her. She tried to save herself from fatal embarrassment by trying to snatch it away from him but he had a strong grip. She watched as his expression went from surprise to a knowing smile. For a second she felt as if she saw a triumph there, but it was impossible and she discarded the thought as soon as it came. She felt her cheeks turn red and looked down.
"Bichhad ki bhi mujhse juda to nahin
Khafa hai magar bewafa to nahin
Bichhad ki bhi mujhse juda to nahin
Khafa hai magar bewafa to nahin"
She watched as he casually banged the door shut with his feet. Next think she knew she was in his arms. He had his arms around her waist and gravity had placed her arms on his chest. She felt her breath hitch but tried to calm herself down. See, this was all a dream, she decided. This wasn't the first time that she had dreamt such stuff. For now, she had been tired and fell asleep on her new room's bed. That's it and she was going to prove it. She carefully released her right hand from his grip. He looked down at her, curious at her action. She brought it down to her left elbow ready to pinch herself. He stopped her with surprising agility. He tightened his hold around her and whispered.
"Riya you are not dreaming. It is really me. I finally found you."
"Mere haath mein hi tera haath hai
Mere haath mein hi tera haath hai"
"Aap kis baare mein baat kar rahe hai?????"Riya asked him, shocked.
He smiled at the sound of her voice. It was beautiful, like a half remembered melody. He bent down and brought his face closers to hers. Reflexively, she shut her eyes. He grinned at her action and touched his forehead to hers once again, careful not to hurt her this time.
Before she could question his sanity, he answered "mujhe lagta hai ki meri honewale dulhan ki sarr par horns accha nahi lagta hai"
She looked scandalized and short for words. He waited, watching her as she thought of a suitable comeback. Meanwhile she scanned her brain for any reason for his weird behavior. The possibility of this being one of her dreams had been cancelled.
"Look if you are thinking of somehow getting back at me for what I said that night, you are.."
"No" he stopped her. He took a deep breath and continued. "What you said changed me Riya. It struck me what a terrible person I had turned into. You don't know how much you have helped me. If it wasn't for you my family might even have lost their youngest member. I owe you my life Riya.
She stood, speechless staring at the tears that had formed in his eyes. She realized that her eyes had teared up too. She couldn't believe that her words had such an effect on him. She thanked god for making her react like that. Her tears and anger had given him a new life. She had given a mother her son back, a brother his brother and herself her favorite cop . She made a move to touch his face but then decided against it. His face, which had become hopeful for one second fell making him more adorable that she thought, was possible. She ruffled his hair and escaped from his grip. She flung the door open and ran out aiming towards the stairs, smiling.
"Riya" he yelled, causing her to stop in her tracks. She turned around to find him looking at her with a naughty expression on his face.
"You are still not of the hook for the sin of changing me. Mein toh tumse shaadi karke hi rahoonga"
She opened her mouth to answer him.
"Riyu" Simran called out. "Will you come down and help me with the decorations?"
"Aayi Di!" She yelled. She stuck her tongue out at him and ran down.
Arjun made a mental note. 1st thing about his new vahini. She had terrible timing.
"Mere paas hai tu mere paas hai
Mere paas hai tu mere paas hai
Mere saath hai mere saath hai
Mere paas hai mere paas hai"
He felt like he was seeing her for the first time, all over again. Her face held the same expression that it had on that day. All his effort to go back to normal... One look at her face and he knew that it had all been worth it.
