~ CHAPTER FORTY-FOUR ~
Mercury... Venus... Mars... Jupiter... that's what Arnav could see right now, besides feeling the burning pain in his guts and the desperate need for air. He coughed, sputtered and gasped on his knees as Cabir furiously rubbed his bruised knuckles. Arnav's belly was harder than he had expected. And so was his punch.
"I didn't really mean to," Cabir mimicked Arnav's earlier statement. "It just happened."
Arnav never saw this coming. He couldn't believe that he just got punched. And that too by Cabir. Yet, there was nothing he could do or say. He couldn't even breathe, forget about talking!
"You know what Arnav?" spat Cabir furiously. "If I was as impulsive as you were, I'd be in jail now. And you... six feet under."
Arnav was in such agony that he just wanted to lie down on the dust and pass out. Whatever he did to feel better, physically and emotionally... nothing worked. By now, something had started to churn in the pit of his stomach. He felt like he would throw up any time.
"Do you have any idea? I must have slaughtered you at least a hundred times in my imagination!" Cabir paced up and down as he raged on. He'd probably never been as frustrated as he was now. "Like a chicken! And probably... beat you black and blue every day with a meat mallet. Coming to think of it, I should have acted on my impulses too! It might have been just what you needed."
Arnav gagged and choked with all his might. But to his disappointment, nothing came out. He was looking forward to some much needed relief from the discomfort but it seemed like it wasn't going to happen any time sooner!
That caught Cabir's attention. Though he still needed to let off a hell lot of steam, Arnav's plight doused his fired up temper to a certain extent. The guy was indeed in a lot of pain which was much required but still not as harsh. Without another word, he stomped up to Arnav and forced him onto his feet. "Get up!" he ordered but Arnav's knees buckled. He couldn't straighten up.
Cabir was really beginning to get worried now. I think that punch was a bit too hard. Hope he's alright.
"Get up. You can do it!" He opened up the front door of his car and helped Arnav in. "I thought that you were a tough guy. So what happened now?"
Arnav sat hunched up with his long legs sticking out of the car whilst he held onto his tortured midsection. Cabir moved to the back seat, fetched his ration of water and held it out for Arnav. "Drink this," he said sternly. Arnav's hesitation was discouraged with one more stern yap from Cabir. "I said drink it! Or I'll knock your block off!"
Orders followed without question. Probably a first for Arnav. He had never taken orders from Cabir before until now. Right now, the ball wasn't in his court. It was in Cabir's. As he began to gulp down the water, he was surprised at how easily it went down his throat. It felt like that's what he really needed now. Though the water did work its wonders, he was still breathless and groggy. That blow had probably flattened out some very important components in his system.
"Are you okay?" asked Cabir. He was less harsh now. That's how Cabir was. Slow to anger. But when it did happen, he just exploded like a nuclear bomb which of course, happened only once in a blue moon. And just as quickly as it came, his temper always receded as quickly as a rogue wave.
"Bro," Cabir shook Arnav gently by the shoulder. "Look at me. Are you alright?"
"Yeah," he groaned.
Cabir leaned onto his car, closed his eyes and took deep breaths whilst he soothingly ran his fingers through his hair. When he opened his eyes, he felt much relaxed. Like his normal, casual self. "Sorry man," he said with a deep sigh, "I just lost it. Pretty frustrating day. Damn hot too. Plus... I wanted to give you this... memento... since a very a long time. Like say... five years. So you know... all that grudge just kept on getting added to the fixed deposit till you... ordered for a withdrawal. With interest. But I feel good now. How about you?"
Arnav remained quiet. Of course, he wasn't feeling good. He was still hurting inside. And he felt weak. Not to mention, miserable! That's when he remembered... Khushi.
He slowly hobbled to his feet and prepared to return to the hospital. It was obvious that he still had to recover from the blow.
"Where are you going?" asked Cabir.
"Back," he replied in a very low groan. "Khushi's in there."
"See listen," Cabir held him back. "No hard feelings bro. But I hope that whatever happened is an eye-opener for you. Punch included. Man... you really need to get a grip on yourself. Whatever happened to your censor board?"
Arnav sighed and tried to walk away but Cabir held him back again. "See I know you won't like it. But I'm being quite plain with you. Control yourself. Do you have any clue what could have happened back there? I mean... what did you do and say to scare her so badly?"
Trapping her for an aggressive kiss... in a deserted and dimly lit stairwell... forcing himself onto her... teasing her... cornering her... grappling her... that's what happened. But he can't share this with Cabir or anyone else. The fact that sharing something this vile and disgusting is one thing. The high risk of getting punched by Cabir was another thing. And if that did happen, he didn't think he could stand up to it. Cabir did pack in a deadly blow. Arnav's mind was racing now.
"You know. When I first got my questions answered I wanted to just march up to Mukherjee and get your ass screwed. I mean like BIG time!"
Arnav looked up at Cabir with horror in his eyes. At this point of time, he felt that the punch was a lot better than escalating the issue for a second time to the higher authorities. This could mess up his entire career for life.
"But I didn't," Cabir went on. "Now I'm thinking that I should have. In fact... I should do it now. And that's exactly what I'm going to do. Now."
