~ CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR ~
Cabir clenched his lips in an attempt to bite back the smile which was forcing its way out. He was absolutely loving it - the way Arnav twiddled with the papers in his hands whilst debating with the voices in his head on whether to share the dream or not. On how his frantic eyes darted back and forth in his head.
"So?" Cabir broke the silence.
Arnav passed a quick sheepish grin. "Ermm... well... there's this... friend of mine..."
"Friend." said Cabir with an eyebrow raised. No. It wasn't a question. Rather a sarcastic yeah, right.
"Yeah, friend," Arnav confirmed as he fidgeted a bit.
"Okay," Cabir leaned onto the chair and rested his chin over his knuckles. "Go on."
"So... he had this dream... early in the morning." Arnav paused for a moment to check out Cabir's expression. He was listening closely with a huge pique of interest written all over his face. "That he was... kissing... a girl."
"Kissing a girl." Cabir repeated in a low not-so surprised voice. "That's it?"
"Mmm." Arnav mumbled in reply with a slight nod.
"So what's so bad about that?" asked Cabir. "It'll be awesome if it comes true."
"Yeah, but... the thing is that he's already in a relationship."
"Oh okay. I see?" Cabir was getting more and more intrigued. He definitely knew that Arnav's story wasn't entirely true. There was a catch somewhere.
"And... the girl he was kissing... was someone else." Arnav finally looked up at Cabir after a long time.
Cabir seemed to be thinking something. "And does he know this... girl? I mean... like in real life?"
"Yeah. He does."
"Hmm. That's interesting." Cabir's eyes sparkled as he watched Arnav fiddling with the papers again. He wasn't looking up at Cabir anymore. "So... how's he with this... girl... in real life? Does he love her? Like her? Hate her?"
"I don't know," came Arnav's abrupt reply which surprised himself more than anyone else. How can I not know? Of course, I hate her! "I mean... I think he hates her."
"You think he hates her." Repeated Cabir.
"Uh huh," mumbled Arnav.
"And you dreamt that you're kiss--- I'm sorry. I mean he dreamt that he was kissing that...girl?"
Arnav had this weird feeling that Cabir made that mistake on purpose. "Yeah," he replied quietly.
"Okay," said Cabir with a sigh as he folded his arms and leaned back onto his chair.
Arnav grew more restless with Cabir's silence. He wanted some kind of closure. Some kind of assurance that he's on the safer side. "So..." Arnav finally spoke up, "what do you think? Will it... come true?"
"Oh no," replied Cabir with an assuring wave of his hand, "now it won't come true. Provided that he had that dream."
"What-what do you mean?" Cabir's words gave Arnav a potentially fatal cardiac arrest.
"I mean... if he was the one who had that... dream, then he's safe. It won't come true. But if someone else had it, then it's going to come true."
Arnav could feel his temper flaring. "What do you mean someone else had it?"
"No, just saying..." Cabir shrugged with an amused smile. "I mean... when he told you about his dream... he could have been telling about someone else's dream, right?"
"What?" Arnav frowned irritably. "Now what are you getting at? You sound like I was telling you about my dream!"
"Whoa-whoa! Chill-chill!" Cabir rose to his feet and delivered a couple of reassuring pats over Arnav's shoulders. "I was just pulling your leg man. Then why do you have to blow your lid?"
"Yeah, whatever," mumbled Arnav and irritably stuffed the papers into the file.
"But jokes apart," continued Cabir as he sank into his chair once again, "this dream does carry a significant meaning. A sign."
He had Arnav's attention now. "A sign?" asked Arnav in anticipation.
"Yes," replied Cabir. "You see. Dreams are a product of your subconscious mind. It's a reflection of your daily life. Your emotions. Your desires. Frustrations et cetera et cetera. Dreams intend to teach you something through symbols. Sometimes it shows you the future. Sometimes it could be a fragment of your past. And sometimes, it shows what your heart desires the most."
What the heart desires the most. All of Cabir's words began to penetrate deep in Arnav. His head felt heavy and his chest was thumping. Is this what my heart desires? But why her?
Shows you the future... how can she be my future? No... it's not possible when I hate her so much.
A fragment of my past... teaches me something... How... what?
Cabir waved his hand before Arnav's eyes. "Hello? Anyone home?"
Arnav snapped out of his trance and went red instantly. "Yeah, sorry. Was just thinking something."
"Bro! Don't get so tensed," said Cabir as he prepared to leave, "after all... it's his dream."
Just then, a robust but average statured man in his mid-forties walked in. He was clean shaven and wore a pair of brown rimmed glasses. Compared to him, Cabir was much taller and Arnav was like a monster. "Boys?" The man was Mr. Mukherjee, the Human Resources Director.
"Sir?" Arnav was surprised at Mukherjee's sudden apparition. "When did you come?"
"Just arrived this morning," he replied, "how's everything?"
"All good," Arnav answered, "as usual."
"Excellent!" Mukherjee drew in a breath of fresh air. "Gather up the team for a meeting in the conference room. Ten minutes."
"Sure," replied Arnav.
On his way out, Mukherjee paused to give a friendly slap on Cabir's shoulder. "Cabir, what's up man?"
"Grand as usual sir," Cabir replied with his crinkly smile.
"Good, I'll see you in a while." Saying this, Mukherjee hurried off to his cabin which had been locked up for days.
Arnav stepped out to call in the team. But when he did, a gut wrenching sight met his eyes.
Khushi and Dhruv were huddled quite close to each other and was engaged in a heart to heart conversation. The lad seemed to be having a tough time in controlling his laughter whilst Khushi leaned in close and whispered into his ears.
Arnav's heart pounded hard in his chest, firstly out of fear then... anger. Shit. I think... that she must be telling him... everything... Everything that she saw! That's why he's laughing!
Arnav was boiling over with rage. His hands clenched into a tight fist as he glowered at an unsuspecting Khushi who kept on cracking her jokes to Dhruv. It seemed like the boy would fall out of his chair laughing. You're so screwed. Both of you. And Khushi... you... I won't spare you. I promise.
