Part 8
RK was sitting near the window as he stared at the sky. It seemed the brightness of the stars had lessened tonight as compared to what it is when he is with Madhu. He couldnt believe his body betrayed him today so much so that he lost control and went so much ahead with her. But Madhu's question echoed in his ears. "Why did it seem so right...?"
He always felt like a gaurdian to Madhu. He felt responsible for her in everything. and he wants a better and secure future for her. Which was sure out of the walls of this orphanage. It was true that it killed him to see her embracing another man but he couldn't name that feeling.
It was almost dawn and RK couldn't even realize the time passing. He was just staring at the sky and remembering his days with Madhu. And then the flashbacks of the night shook him to the core. Did he really love Madhu? He loves her for sure but it was always as a friend. His little companion in happiness and sorrows and his naughty partner in crime. And even if its love as everyone else says but then wouldn't it be selfish of him to hold her back.
He was still trying to decipher his feelings when he heard a knock at the door.
He opened the door and found Trishna standing in front. She had come to him after making Madhu sleep somehow comforting her for RK's bizarre behavior.
" Trish? You are here at this time?" RK asked confused.
"Well this question should be directed at you.." Trishna said sarcastically.
RK looked at her confused. Its his room why should he be asked that.
"Firstly you are usually on the roof and secondly, you are up so early.. or rather you didn't sleep all night.." she said with narrowed eyes.
"What do you want?" RK asked annoyed.
"Of course you know why i am here.. why are you doing this to yourself and Madhu.." Trishna said exasperated.
"What am I doing..?" RK asked baffled.
"You know you love Madhu and she loves you.. but the whole problem is that she believes you blindly.. you say its black and she would start doubting her own eyes.." Trishna said pointing at the white colored wall. "What I mean to say is why are you making yourself and her believe that what is between the two of you is not love?"
"Because it isnt.. we have been friends since childhood and that is all the relation that we have.. Madhu loves Sultan and I have seen that with my own eyes.." RK said irritated.
"Even if it's just friendship, can you stand the time when this friendship of yours is sidelined for another person... or can you give another girl so much importance what you give Madhu? Why are you complicating this simple equation..?" She said exasperated as she sat on the bed. "And Sikky hasnt washed his socks yet? No breakfast for him today.." she said to herself looking around.
"Do you want me to think that I love Madhu?" RK said as he walked to the bed and picked up Sikky's socks throwing them away.
"No.. I want you to realize that you already love her.."
"I dont need to love her, Trish.. My relation with Madhu is strong enough for me to make her stay with me for life" RK said to her determined.
"Then why push her with someone else?" She said exasperated.
"Because she deserves a better life.." RK almost shouted. "Do you think I like the fact that Sultan is taking away the attention that has always been mine.." he said angrily while Trishna looked at him almost scared. RK had always been the cool kinds. It was the first time she saw him so angry.
"I feel hurt seeing her with someone else and I felt hurt when I saw her hugging Sultan.. but.. but if this provides Madhu with a secure future I am ready to bear that pain.." RK said looking angrily.
"You think Madhu loves Sultan because you saw her hugging him.. If Madhu can doubt her beliefs just because you say otherwise, then why can't you doubt what you saw.. Maybe the reason is something else.." Trishna said trying to reason.
"If I make her stay with me, it would be sheer selfishness.. How long would she stay back in this orphanage? Sultan can provide her a better future.." RK said looking away.
"Are you sure Madhu would be happy with Sultan?" Trishna asked softly as she stood up. She understood RK was himself going through a war in himself.
"Think before you take decisions that would affect not only yours but also Madhu's life.." she walked off after this but RK got lost in another wave of confusion. Is Sultan really the solution for Madhu's prosperous life.

Madhu walked in the cafe confidently. Her stride no more that of a nervous damsel but she took large confident steps. Sultan stood near the counter with a nervous smile instead. Madhu had called him to meet her which in itself was a shocker and more than that her voice was very calm. The way it used to be when he had first met her.
She walked right up to him. "Should we sit?" She asked.
"Yes why not.." Sultan said walking to the nearest table quickly unable to hold on to the suspense.
Madhu took his hand and kept something on it. Sultan looked at his palm and found the ring on it. What he feared the most had happened and his heart broke into a million pieces.
"I am sorry Sultan.. it took me so much time to realize and in all my dilemma, you faced its brunt.." she said guiltily. "It all started as a harmless friendship between us but while you started growing affectionate towards me I only grew afraid of your attention.. I could never get comfortable with the idea of us being together and you know that very well.. Its not that I hid anything from you about my feelings for you.. what I never understood was myself but yesternight I could think clearly and I realized that I dont love you.. The way I was always scared that you might propose to me, it was because I had not loved you.. You are a great man but maybe I am not deserving enough.. because as me and Rishu call ourselves.. we are weird souls.." she chuckled a little. "You deserve much better, Sultan... I know it might not be enough but I really am Sorry.."
"How did you get so sure that you dont love me..? we are together for so long ." Sultan said not able to accept what she said
"I am sure that I wont ever be able to leave this life of mine.. not for anyone.. and I am sure I would never be able to accept any man anywhere close to what Rishu is in my life.." she said looking down.
"RK.." Sultan smiled half heartedly looking at her. "I had always dreaded this and it happened."
"Maybe because it had to happen.." Madhu said calmly.
Sultan nodded his head looking away. "Maybe" he said with a sigh.
"I am sorry Sultan.. you had to become a part of our confusions.."
"RK was with Dipali right?" Sultan asked suddenly as if not hearing her.
"He is still with Dipali.." she said nervously.
"Then? Why all this? Why are we breaking up?" He asked baffled.
"Because I know whether I get Rishu or not but I would never be able to do justice to us.. to you.. and i dont want to betray you or myself anymore.."
"Madhu... you are being too fast.."
"No.. I have already been too late.." Madhu said getting up. "Two days after is Rishu's birthday.. It would be good if you come to attend that.. all our friends would be there.." she said turning away as she walked off leaving a confused and heartbroken Sultan sitting behind. But in his heart he knew Madhu was right. He had always sensed that love in her for RK, that was the reason he had become so desperate for Madhu to accept his love soon. She had never seconded his opinions of love.

Madhu reached the orphanage soon as she searched for RK. She was finally feeling the weight lifted off of her. She frowned as RK was nowhere to be found but then she decided to check his room. And there he was sleeping in his bed. She smiled seeing his childlike expressions. How she always loved to see his sleeping figure. She sat beside him as she remembered the last night's kiss and felt an urge again. Should she kiss him again? She thought to herself. While still confused at the decision, she remembered Trishna's words. "You have first right on RK"
She smiled to herself as she bent down to his face. She was about to kiss him when he opened his eyes in a flash. It seemed he had been awake. Madhu stared in his eyes without budging away while RK stared back. He couldn't think anything having her so close as all his senses started to evoke. Without saying a word Madhu bent more and pecked on his lips. "Good morning Rishu.." she said with a smile. RK looked at her shocked. He had least expected her to do that or at least carry on with her plan even after seeing him awake.
She got up and hopped off happily while RK sat up. He was confused on what he should do. What felt right to his heart was denied by his mind and vice versa.. He had felt like holding her close and pulling her to himself so as to kiss her hard but her move had shocked the wits out of him. And now when he felt like claiming the whole of her, she had happily walked off. He closed his eyes not believing what his mind started to picturize her like. He wasnt able to sleep all night but was pretending since an hour knowing that Madhu would check on him soon. He couldn't get himself to face her. He felt somewhat he took advantagebof her last night.
But it was no use now. He decided to get out of the room. One thing was bugging him was that he was in dire need of tea but was confused if he should wait for Madhu to give him herself or should go to ask her ir rather forget about the tea at all.
He found Madhu adjusting the books in the library. She turned to him and smiled but then continued with her work. RK stood there for a few minutes but then walked off not getting any response from her. He was walking to and fro in the corridoor.
"I want tea.." he said to Trishna who was sitting in the garden.
"Go have it.. its in the mess" she shrugged.
"No i want Madhu's tea. Go and tell her.." he saud firmly.
"No no no.. i am not playing messenger between the two of you.. don't be an idiot.. talk to her.." she said angrily.
RK sighed hearing her. She was right. Some kiss or strange feelings shouldn't change their long relationship together. Their relationship is much more than that. He walked back to the library and stood there.
Madhu looked at him waiting while he just looked back at her. After a few minutes of pause Madhu sighed. "you are so stubborn Rishu!" She said angrily as she walked past him to the kitchen while RK smirked at her.
"Wipe that smile off!" She screamed as she kept walking. RK felt a strange chill run down his spine. Madhu knew him soo well. Even without looking at him she knew that he must be smiling. maybe she has realized it before him that they both love each other. Should he rely on her decision? But then the question for him isnt if he loves her or not. The question is Madhu's prosperous life which she deserves.
"Dont think that much.." Madhu said softly as she came back now with a cup in her hand.
RK looked at her and sighed. "Its about your life.. how can I not think?" He replied back softly.
"I know the best way out.." she said with a slight smile.
"I cant let you risk your life Madhu... You should explore better options.. If Sultan is not your answer, forget him.. you are not getting old or something.. we are very young.." he starrted to reason with her again.
"But I know Rishu.." she interrupted. "I know that you are always the best and only option for me.." she said firmly and then walked away not wanting to hear anymore talks of his. She felt bad hearing him trying to reject her. RK was left dumb struck.
