PART TWELVE - JAVA

"I'm sorry," he mumbled as he stepped back. I walked towards him, grabbing his hand to stop him. But he wouldn't have any of it...

"LEAVE ME!" he screamed. I held his hand tighter in response but still flinched at his tone. "Please let me explain Randhir!" I requested, tears threatening to spill. I controlled myself but he couldn't as tears made their way down his face. It broke my heart to see him crying just because of me. "It's not what you think," I quietly said as my vision blurred from the tears that I was starting to shed.

"Just get out of here Mrs. Mittal!" he ordered, emphasizing my name.

"Please Randhir!" I begged. "It's not what you think! I'm not with hi..." but he interrupted me by storming out of the room, slamming the door in the process.

I sank to the floor, my knees unable to carry my weight. Tears dropped silently, pricking my heart as they reminded me of all the times that I had hurt him.

"Randhir! I'm sorry! I know I should've told you the truth, but I just didn't want you to worry!"

He jerked his arm away from my grasp and turned to me, seething in anger. "I don't care what you were doing but you have NO justification for lying to me! You, out of all, know just how much I hate it when people lie to me. How could you Sanyukta?" More than anger, I saw disappointment in his eyes. And that was much worse than anger. I could take his anger, but not this. I couldn't bear the fact that he was disappointed in me. I stood there, feeling more guilty than I had ever before. He was right... After learning about his past, I knew how much he resented lying. I never should have lied.

*Knock on the door*

"Go away Sanyukta!"

"Please Randhir, just listen to me once! I'm really sorry! I don't know why I did what I did, but I know I shouldn't have! I pro..," he opened the door at this point, leaving me a little stumped. "What?" he prodded. "I... I promise it won't happen again," I said genuinely. "I didn't mean to hurt you!"

He was still angry, although he didn't show it on his face, but he let it go. I kissed his cheek, "I'm seriously very sorry!"

"Now come with me, I'll drop you off! You shouldn't sneak into the boys' dorms at night like this!" I smiled at his concern. We walked to the girls' dorm hand-in-hand, as I leaned my head on his shoulder.

"You're not angry right?"

He gave me a little smile as he shook his head. "But Farzi, please don't lie to me. Ever!"

Pecking his lips, "I promise Randhir!"

I had unknowingly hurt him so many times, but he always forgave me. Even that time, Parth had told me that Randhir wasn't able to sleep the whole night. But he never let me know how hurt he was. He always gave me the benefit-of-doubt. It wasn't that I took advantage of it, but I never realized just how understanding he has always been.

Thinking back to all those mistakes of mine made me feel sick to my stomach now. It wasn't until a couple of minutes after that I was able to gather myself. I could feel the tears drying up on my cheeks, but I didn't even bother cleaning my face. I walked away and headed to the elevator, only to be stopped by the receptionist.

"Umm Mrs. Mittal, Mr. Shekhawat left this for you!"

I was taken aback with that. "For me? Are you sure?" to which she nodded. "Okay thank you!" I said as I took the envelope from her.

"Have a good day Ma'am," she greeted me politely.

I walked off, the envelope in my hands. Fiddling with the cover, I wondered if I was ready to open it or not. It was only until I reached inside my car that I made up my mind. Tearing off the corner, I proceeded to read the content.

It is with great honour that we accept your application for an internship at the Shekhawat Corporation. You will be working under Mr. Vishal Solanki, the Chief Operating Officer of our company. You will also be answerable to Mr. Randhir Shekhawat, the Chief Executive Officer, in any circumstances which require the combined efforts of the CEO and the COO.

Your background check has been covered prior to your interview, so once you read over the attached forms, sign the forms and submit them to Ms. Avantika Sharma by the end of this week.

Your training will begin from next Monday, 8:00 AM sharp.

I sat still in the car, unable to take in the fact that I had actually gotten this internship. He had already decided to hire me before the interview, that's the only explanation. And as if he knew that was exactly what I would think, I found another note that fell down from the envelope.

Sanyukta, the interview was merely a formality to follow the official procedures. I had already decided to hire you as soon as I saw your file on my desk. I don't know what happened in the past four years, or why you just graduated this year, but I do know that there is no better candidate for an internship than you. You know I expect a lot from you, so make sure that you do whatever is needed from you in order to fulfil your responsibilities as an intern at the Shekhawat Corporation. And I request you to keep our personal issues at bay when working at the firm.

I didn't know whether to feel happy that I got the internship or scared that I will have to face him everyday without letting my emotions control me. I drove home in an unsettled state of mind. I didn't know what to think about any of this. And so, I did something which I should have done long time ago.

Dialling his number, I put the phone to my ear.

"Hello Parth?"
