Chapter 60
She walked through the dark corridors scared. Should she have come here? Maybe she should have informed someone? No! They would be upset with her if they knew that she was coming here, that too to visit the one person who has wronged them so much. Why was she here? Did she know? She wanted to put an end to this! She wanted tell her mother that she never wished to see her face for the rest of her life. Reaching the end of the hallway, she saw her mother slouched in the corner of the room with her back to the floor. She was wearing a white salwar kameez with dark blue strips at the end. Her hair was in a messy bun with her dupatta pulled half way over it. A gasp escaped her lips seeing her mother's wrinkled face, her eyes were baggy, and her lips looked dry. She recalled how her mother used to look and her eyes became moist. No! She can't become weak. Her mother was paying for her own sins. Hearing footsteps, Razia looked up. She was shocked to her daughter there. She gathered herself from the floor and ran up to the iron railings. "Humaira," she cried. It has been so long since she had seen her, raiza thought sadly. "Aap mujhe baar baar phone kyun karti rehti hai?" Humaira asked. "Main tumse baat karna chathi thi. Kash main tumari shaadi dekh paati," Razia said wishfully. "Kyun? Taaki aap usse bhi thodne ki kosish kare?" Humaira said. "Aisa mat bolo beta. Main jaanti hoon keh mujhse bahut baadi galati huwi hai, maaf kardo mujhe," Razia pleaded. Humaira felt terrible! Seeing her mother fold her hands and beg her for forgiveness is something she never imagined she would be seeing. She took a deep breath and braced herself. "Galti woh hoti hai joh bina jaane hoti hai. Lekin aapne toh, sabh kuch...sabh jaante huwe kiya," Humaira accused. "Kya tum mujhe ek mauka nahi dohgi?" Razia hoped. "Aapke diye huwe zakam bahut gehare hai, paata nahi main kabhi unne bhul paungi. Please, aapse ek request hai keh mujhe phone mat kijiye, kabhi nahi!" Humaira said and walked away. Razia called out to Humaira many times but her daughter didn't stop.
Humaira felt tears constantly roll down her cheeks but she didn't let her mother see that. She kept walking and walking, hoping to get away from all this. Few minutes later, Humaira realized that this was not the way she had come in. Where was she? She wondered, wiping her tears and blinking her eyes to clear her vision. As she was about to return back, Humaira heard screaming down the corridor. The voice felt familiar. She walked forward to see a lady yelling and throwing things at the four guards who had her surrounded. "Mujhe mera baccha deh do, mere baccha laakar deh do na," she kept asking going from one guard to the next. When she turn to face the railings, Humaira was stunned. "Tanveer!" she gasped. What has happened to her? She looked so different. Her hair was chopped off, her clothes were dirty and torn. She kept begging and crying but no one gave her anything. Finally, two of the guards held her down while another one injected her with something. Within seconds, Tanveer fell unconscious. Humaira caught hold of one of the guards who was leaving. "Kya hua hai isse?" she asked. "Pagal hogayi hai, aapne kiye ki saaza bhukat rahi hogi," the lady replied. "Matlab?" Humaira said confused. "Kuch dino phele isne apna baccha koh diya aur tabh se aise hi apne bacche kehliye chilati aur rohti rehati hai. Agar yeh aise hi karti rahi toh isse jaldi hi pagal khane bhej denge," the guard stated. Humaira looked at the guard then at the sleeping Tanveer in the cell behind, trying to understand what she was just informed of. "Aap yaha kisise milne aayi hai?" the guard asked, breaking her thoughts. "Jee...aap mujhe bahar ka raasta baata dengi please," Humaira said. "Haan...chaliye," the guard said and turned around to walk. As Humaira followed the lady, she couldn't believe that she had still witnessed a fanatical Tanveer. She had always seen Tanveer have so much attitude and over confidence that no one could do anything to her. She had thought that she was more powerful than any human. Maybe? But Allah, Allah watches everything. He knows what you do and think. You can fool the people around you but never him. Tanveer was possibly paying for her deeds. Allah has his own ways of showing people their place in this world and hereafter.
Humaira returned home and debated a lot about telling everyone about what she had seen. But, decided against it. The family had been through so much and finally were happy. She didn't want to spoil that. That night, after dinner, Humaira waited for Haider to return after discussing work with Farhan and Asad. She saw the door open and her husband walk in. Seeing her sitting on the bed, "kya hua?" he asked. Humaira was surprised that he realized that she was tensed. "Mujhe tumse baat karni hai," she said. He came up to her and took a seat. "Bolo," he urged. "Woh aaj subhe...woh main," she said nervously. "Humi...what's wrong?" Haider questioned. "Aaj main jail gayi thi Ammi se milne," Humaira stated as Haider looked on shocked. "Kyun?" he said. "Woh mujhe baar baar phone karahi thi toh mujhe jaana paada," she explained. "Tumne mujhe baataya kyun nahi Humaira. Waha jaane ki kya zaroorat thi," Haider said getting upset. "I was just scared Haider. Aur main nahi chathi thi keh ghar mein sabh koh beeti baatein yaad aaye. Main waha sirf unne yeh bolne gayi thi keh mujhe phone na kare," Humaira said. "Dekho Humaira, main jaanta hoon keh woh tumari Ammi hai. Par tumara aisa jail jaana woh bina mujhe baataye, I don't like that," Haider told her. "I am sorry," she said sadly. He took her hand in his and pulled her closer, "You ok?" he said concerned. Humaira recalled what had occurred that morning and her eyes became moist. Haider pulled her against his chest in a tight embrace. They both stood in silence. "I saw Tanveer there too," she said after a few minutes. Haider moved back surprised, "What?" he said. Humaira explained how she had accidentally stumbled upon Tanveer's cell and what she had seen. "For a moment, I actually felt bad for her," Humaira confessed. "She got what she deserved," Haider said angrily. "Mujhe paata hai, par ek bacche koh kohna. Aur jis tarah woh sabh kehliye apne bacche ki bheek mangrahi thi," Humaira told him. "Humi, meri baat dihaan se suno. Don't tell this to anyone. Main nahi chatha keh ghar wale especially Asad Bhaijaan aur Bhabhi koh yeh sabh paata chale. Joh chapter khatam hogaya hai usse band rehne dehna hi sahi hai," Haider said. "I agree, main kisko kuch nahi bolungi," Humaira agreed. "Are you mad at me?" she said. "Nahi Humi! Main jaanta hoon keh woh tumari Ammi hai and all this has been really hard for you. I am just worried about you," he said, cupping her face and placing a kiss on her forehead. Humaira smiled as she wrapped her hands around his waist and pulled him in an embrace.
Downstairs, Asad was searching for his wife. He had checked their room, the kitchen, the garden but she was nowhere to be seen. "Najma, tumne Zoya koh kahi dekha hai?" he asked. "Nahi Bhaijaan...kya hua? Aap koh kuch chahiye?" Najma offered. "Nahi Tamatar, woh Zoya koh dawayi dehne ka waqt hogaya hai toh," Asad said. "Phir toh Bhabhi zaroor kahi chup gayi hongi," Najma presumed with a chuckle. Asad just shook his head and smiled. Zoya's leg swelling was getting worse so he had taken her to the doctor about a week ago. The doctor had suggested that they start medications. Zoya was really hesitant as she didn't want to cause any harm to the babies. The doctor had assured her that the medications were safe and she didn't have to worry. Asad knew Zoya was still skeptical about the whole thing. So, she tried avoiding the medications every day. And it has become his task to ensure that she eats them. After searching some more, Asad found her resting on the rocking chair in the babies' room. He slowly walked in so he didn't disturb her but she opened her eyes and sat up. "Tum yaha ho aur main tume saare ghar mein doond raha tha. Tum yaha kya karahi ho?" Asad asked. "Woh...mujhe yaha rehna tha," Zoya replied. Asad could hear a disappointment, a sadness in her voice. He placed the small tray with the medications aside and walked up to her. Asad kneeled in front of her and took her hand in his, "Kya hua Zoya?" he said. "Kuch nahi...bas aise hi," she said, shrugging her shoulders. "Zoya," he said. Asad knew something was wrong. Her eyes gave it away! But what? Everything was completely fine just a bit ago. She bit her lip debating how to put her thoughts in words. "I feel bad," she said after a few minutes. "Bad? Why?" he asked confused. "Woh kuch dher phele main room mein kapde theek karahi thi aur complain karahi thi keh mujhse aaj kal kuch bhi nahi hota. I mean main theek se soh nahi paati, chal nahi paati...aur phir I realized keh main kitna complain karti hoon," Zoya explained. Asad nodded but still had a puzzled look on his face. "Kya humare babies koh aisa lagega keh main unne nahi chathi hoon? Agar yeh dono itne active hai toh main kya inn dono koh samaal paungi? Will I be a good mother? Aur aisa bilkul bhi nahi hai keh main unne nahi chathi, I love them and I really want them, " Zoya was nervous, and she kept going without even giving Asad a chance to answer. "Zoya!" he interrupted and she stopped. "Tum yeh sabh kya sooch rahi ho? Aisa kuch nahi hai. I know keh tum duniya ki sabh se best mom banogi," Asad said confidently. "Abhi tumari tabeyat theek nahi rehati toh you are complaining but I know keh tum baccho se kitna pyaar karti hoon. And I am sure our babies know too," he added. Tears brimmed at the rim of her eyes. "I love you," she whispered, cupping his face. "I love you too!" Asad told her, straightening himself and capturing her lips with his. He knew that she was just unsure, nervous about all these changes. Anyone would be! Was he not scared? Truth be told, he was terrified. How do you deal with two kids at once? What was right or what was wrong? Will he be a good father? He thought about this often too. Zoya is experiencing all these changes inside her so her fear is probably more than what he has. "Hum haina ek dusre kehliye, iss safar mein humara saath hi humari takat banega," he told her as they broke apart from the kiss. Zoya smiled, "mujhe yaha aana bahut accha lagtha hai, I love this place," she declared. "Aabh dawayi khani hai, chalo," he said. As he was about to stand up, Zoya held his hand. "Mujhe khana nahi hai Asad, dekho main theek hoon," Zoya said, pulling her salwar up and showing him her lower feet. "And for that to stay that way, tume dawayi khani padega," he told her. "Par Asad...," she was about argue, "No arguments, chup chap dawayi khalo," he interrupted. Asad got the tray with the medications, made Zoya open her mouth, and fed her the medications. After she was done, Asad gathered her in his arms and took her to their room. "Asad, aap mujhe chalne kyun nahi dehte, I will be ok," she said. "Mujhe accha lagtha hai tume aise utana, I love doing this," he teased. "Accha...toh babies hone keh baad mein aap mujhe aise utayenge?" she asked. "Of course!" Asad replied. "Aur hum dono keh buddhe hone keh baad bhi?" she confirmed. "Yes, why not? Par shayad tabh problem hojayegi," Asad stated. "Matlab?" Zoya said confused. "Agar main bhudda hokar tume utaunga toh meri kamar toot jayegi," Asad said with a chuckle. "Asad, not funny," she said with a glare. "Kyun nahi...tabh toh humare saare baccho koh meri help karni padegi tume utane mein," Asad joked. "Saare bacche? We are only having two," she stated. "Kya? Aur main yaha kya kya sooch raha tha," he said, nuzzling her cheek. Zoya felt her body turn crimson. "Asad, seriously stop it!" Zoya chided.
Two days later, Zoya was sitting on her bed waiting for her husband to return from work. She was reading one of the pregnancy books that was explaining what to expect during delivery. A smile crept up her lips seeing the picture of the new born baby. "Aap dono bhi aise hi dikhenge na, chote se...cute se," she said, placing her hand on her bulging abdomen. Just then, she saw her husband walk in yelling in the phone. "I don't care Mr. Mehra...cancel the meeting, I am not coming," he said. A second later, "I said I don't care dAmmit! Tell them to cancel the meeting, they cant just prepone without notice," he screamed. Zoya put her book away and looked at him worried. He ended the conversation and threw his bag on the couch. "Asad, kya hua?" she asked. "Nothing...people are idiots," he said frustrated. Zoya slowly got off the bed and walked up to him. "What happened? Tum itne pareshaan kyun ho?" Zoya said, placing a hand on his shoulder. "Singapore clients chathe hai keh agle mahine ki meeting yeh weekend postpone hojaye," he replied, calming himself down. "Toh?" Zoya said confused. "Meeting kehliye mujhe singapore jaana hoga and main iss waqt tume chodkar nahi jasaktha," he told her. "Asad, agar kaam hai toh tume jaana chahiye," she said. "No! you are more important," Asad stated. "Asad, its ok! Tume jaana chahiye, main theek hoon," she explained. "Nahi Zoya...mujhe nahi jaana hai. Aur Abu and Bhai bhi kuch aur clients keh saath busy hai, I will have Mr. Mehra cancel the deal," he firmly stated. "Aisa kuch karne ki zaroorat nahi hai. Meeting kitne din ki hai?" she questioned. "Teen din," Asad said. "Aap jayiye, I will be fine," Zoya told him confidently. He looked at her surprised. "Ha Asad, delivery kehliye time haina, aur aap ki meeting bas teen dino ki hai. Aap jaakar apna kaam khatam kijiye aur waapas aayiye, I will be waiting for you," she said smilingly. "But Zoya...," he said when she intervened. "Nahi Asad...aap fikar mat kijiye. Main apna khayal rakongi aur phir saare ghar wale haina, sabh theek hoga," Zoya said. Asad tried to argue but Zoya was adamant that he had to go and in the end, he had to agree. "Tum na bahut ziddi ho," he said. "Paata hai, par yeh bhi jaanti hoon that you love me for that," Zoya said as she moved forward and kissed his cheek. "You know I will miss you," Asad said pulling her in an embrace. "Bas kuch dino ki toh baat haina, fikar mat kijiye. Waise aapko jaana kabh padega?" she said. "Kal nikal na padega," he said. "Oh ok," Zoya said sadly. He pulled her closer and pecked her forehead.
Later that night, Zoya felt the empty space on the bed. That broke her slumber and she opened her eyes searching for her husband. Not finding him in the room, Zoya sat up and helped herself off the bed. "Asad," she called out looking for him. She even looked into the bathroom but he wasn't there. She was about to open the room door when Asad entered. "Asad, kaha chale gaye the aap? Woh bhi itni raat koh?" Zoya questioned. "Kuch kaam karaha tha," he replied. "Asad, kal jaakar aapko kaam hi toh karna hai aur aaj bhi aap wahi karahe hai," Zoya said upset. "Main office ka nahi kuch aur kaam karaha tha," he told her. "Kaisa kaam?" Zoya said puzzled. "Chalo mere saath," Asad said. Zoya was about to walk when he stopped her. Asad wrapped his arms around her waist and gathered her. "Asad, jaana kaha hai?" she asked. "Terrace par," he told her. Zoya was confused as to why they were going upstairs at this time. Within few minutes, they reached the terrace and he carefully placed on her feet. Seeing darkness around them, "Asad, saare lights kyun off hai?" Zoya wondered. "Ek minute yehi ruko, main baata tha hoon," Asad told her. Zoya waited for him. The lights flickered on as Asad returned. Zoya smiled and grabbed onto his arm. In front her was a small table with two chairs surrounded by white and red roses and golden lights. "Wow Asad!" Zoya said happily. "Tum complain karahi thi na keh tumse cheeze theek se nahi hoti, par tumse ek baat hosakthi hai keh tumare handsome husband keh saath, moonlight date karo," Asad teased. Zoya giggled, "Mr. Khan, I would love that," she said with a grin. Asad helped her walk to the table and take a seat. "Aapne yeh sabh plan kabh kiya?" she asked curiously. "Jab tumne decide kiya keh main singapore jaraha hoon, main chatha tha keh inn teen dino mein tumse door rehna hai toh meri pyaari biwi keh saath kuch special kiya jaaye," Asad said taking her hand in his, and caressing it. "Tume bhook lagi hai?" he asked opening the dishes on the table. "Of course Asad, mujhe kabh bhook nahi lagi hoti hai," Zoya said and they both chuckled. She saw her favorite snakcs arranged on the table. "Yeh sabh aap mujhe khane deh rahe hai?" Zoya said surprised. "Well, ek din kehliye. Don't get used to it," he teased. "Aur ha, kal se main yaha nahi rahonga toh yeh sabh khana mat shuru kardena," Asad added. "Jaanti hoon, nahi khaongi," Zoya assured him. "Accha, aabh yeh toh khalo," he said as he picked a slice of pizza and offered it to her. Zoya smiled and took a bite. The night passed as they both sat on a mattress under a canopy looking at the stars and discussing the future.
"Asad, ek baat bolo," Zoya said breaking the silence. They were cuddled together on the bed with Zoya using Asad's arm as a support. "Haan bolo," Asad probed. "Mujhe dar lagraha hai...," she honestly said. "Kaisa dar?" Asad said concerned. "Bahut cheezo ka dar. Delivery keh waqt ka dar. Bacche theek honge na uska dar. Aur kya main ek acchi ma banpaongi ka dar," she said sadly. "Zoya, Allah haina humare saath kuch nahi hoga. Aur main pure yakeen se bol saktha hoon keh tum ek bahut acchi ma banogi," Asad told her. "Lekin Asad, kuch dino phele tak toh mujhe yeh tak nahi paata tha keh Ammi kaisi hoti hai. Bachpan se Ammi ka pyaar toh mila hi nahi," Zoya said as tears brimmed in her eyes. "Zoya, ek accha insaan hona bahut zaroori hota hai and I know keh tum ek bahut acchi insaan ho," he said. "Ammi ki bahut yaad aati hai," Zoya cried. "Main waapas aate hi tume ley chalunga," Asad comforted. "Bahut din hogaye. Main kal Najma ya Humaira koh lekar chali jaungi," Zoya suggested. "Theek hai par khayal rakna," Asad said as he wiped her tears. Zoya just nodded. Asad couldn't see her like this. "Mujhe lagtha hai dono betiya hongi," he said. "What? Nahi Asad, ek beta aur ek beti...mujhe yeh jaana hai keh main aur tum bachpan mein kaise the," Zoya said. "Matlab?" Asad wondered. "Matlab keh aap bolte hai keh humari beti meri jaisi hogi toh main chatha hoon keh humara beta aapke jaisa ho, lekin itna kadoos na ho," Zoya said. Asad just glared at her while she laughed. Asad smiled as he puled her closer for a kiss. He couldn't see her so gloomy and upset about the past. Asad knew that her past was something that still haunted her. It was something that will probably overshadow their lives as much as they wanted to avoid it. But, he knew one thing. Every time she was sad about her past, he would always be there to cheer her up. He would ensure that a smile returned to her face. It was a promise that he had made to himself which he would fulfill till his last breath. As they broke apart, "I love you," she said, snuggling closer to him. Asad beamed as they both fell asleep under the stars.
The next day, Zoya woke up feeling sore as she had slept on the soft mattress on the floor. Asad told the family about the business trip and repeatedly told Zoya to rest. She agreed and told him that she will take care of herself, and he didn't need to worry. After Asad left, everyone in the family was more careful with Zoya. Someone was with her all the time. Each night, Dilshad massaged her feet and confirmed so the swelling was manageable. Najma shifted from her room to sleep with Zoya so she had someone if needed. Asad called every time he had a break to check up on her. Zoya found this all very amusing. She couldn't believe how everyone was treating her as a kid. Sometimes, she felt very annoyed but at others, she felt overwhelmed with the love showered upon her. One night, he walked into the room to see it empty. He was late from work and expected his wife to be in the room. "Humi...Humaira...," he called out but was responded by silence. He was about to walk out the room when he saw the lights were on in the bathroom. He walked closer and pushed open the door to see her sitting on the floor crying. He rushed up to her, "Humi...kya hua?" he asked shocked. Seeing him, she dashed into his arms and started hollering. "Humaira please kuch bolo...what happened?" he asked. "Haider...main...," she sobbed. "Ha bolo...kya hua hai?" Haider questioned again. She just kept crying. Haider was getting tensed, what had happened. "Please Humi...kuch bolo," he pleaded. "I...I was pregnant!" she cried. Haider was about to smile but then stopped himself. "Matlab?" he said unsure. "Main...main aabh pregnant nahi hoon," Humaira said tearfully. "When did you know?" Haider wondered. "Bas kuch dino phele, main tume baatane wali thi," Humaira said sadly. "Hey...may be Allah has better plans for us. I am sorry," he said. "Humare saath hi kyun?" she cried. Haider wrapped her arms around her and pulled her in a hug. Tears brimmed in his eyes as they both silently mourned the loss of their child.
The next morning, Haider told Dilshad about the previous night. Humaira was still recovering. Dilshad comforted Humaira who was sobbing when Zoya walked into the room. Nikhat told her what had happened. "Kya?" Zoya said shocked. She walked up to Humaira and Dilshad who were in each other's arms. Seeing Zoya, Humaira dashed into her arms and started crying. "Humi...," Zoya said as she enveloped her sister in a tight hug. "I am sorry," she whispered. Zoya tried her best to console her sister but it was hard. Humaira was uncontrollable. "Humi...meri baat toh suno. please rohna mat," Zoya requested. She took Humaira and made her sit on the couch. "Humi...main jaanti hoon keh yeh bahut hi mushkil waqt hai par Allah miyan sabh theek kardenge. Allah hume kabhi kohi mushkil nahi dehte jisse hume kuch accha na ho. Allah miyan ne tumare liye isse behatar kuch raka hoga. Aabh shayad aisa na laage par inshAllah tumari zindagi mein bahut saari khushiya aayengi," Zoya told her. Humaira looked up at her, "aap itne yakeen se kaise bolsakthi hai?" she wondered. Zoya smiled, recalling her hard times. "Humi...har kisike zindagi mein kuch na kuch bura hota hai. Hum sabh koh kohi mushkil se guzar na padtha hai lekin main yeh jaanti hoon keh ek din sabh theek bhi hojata hai. Trust me," she said confidently. Humaira knew what Zoya was talking about. She had been through so much since childhood which has made her stronger. Humaira had never faced anything so traumatic. Since she was kid, she has had the luxury of having everything given to her. The biggest deceit she has ever received is from her mother. She was still coming out of this shock when she had lost the baby she was carrying. This was all too much. "But look around you Humi...you have so many people that are here, they care!" her mind reminded. Humaira looked around the room and hugged Zoya again. Zoya felt tears brim in her eyes. Dilshad moved closer and placed a hand of support on Zoya's shoulder as she enveloped both her daughters in an embrace.
Later that day, Zoya was speaking to Asad on the phone and he could tell she was sad. "Zoya...sabh theek toh haina?" he asked for the fourth time. "Haan Asad, main bilkul theek hoon," Zoya repeated. She hated lying to him but Zoya didnt want to tell him about Humaira now. Zoya decided to wait till he returned. "Toh mujhe aisa lag kyun nahi raha hai?" Asad questioned. "Aapna bahut kaam karahe hai. Issliye aapko meri awaaz aise lagrahi hai," she told him. "Accha?" he said suspiciously. Something was definitely wrong. He was getting tensed now. "Yeh sabh chodiye, aap waapas kabh aarahe hai?" she said. "Kal raat ya parso subhe tak aajaunga," he told her. "I miss you," Zoya said sadly. "Zoya...mujhe aisa lagtha hai keh tum mujhse kuch chupa rahi ho," he said. Zoya felt tears fill her eyes. No matter how hard she tried, Zoya couldnt get the image of a sobbing Humaira out of her head. She was becoming emotional just thinking about her sister and her kids. "Zoya, please kuch bolo," Asad probed from the other end. Zoya closed her eyes and let tears roll down her cheeks. "Zoya...please say something," he pleaded. "Assa..," Zoya choked on her voice when someone took the phone from her. Zoya turned to see worried Najma. "Hello Bhaijaan," she spoke. "Najma...what's wrong? Ghar mein sabh theek haina? Aur Zoya ki tabeyat?" Asad asked. "Bhaijaan...Bhabhi theek hai. I think woh aapko thoda miss karahi hai issliye thodi sad hogayi. Lekin aap tension mat lijiye, main hoon na," Najma told him. Asad wasnt completely satisfied but he thought maybe his wife was getting emotional. "Zoya ka dihaan rakna," Asad said. "Jee Bhaijaan," Najma said obidiently and ended the conversation. "Bhabhi...aap aisa karengi toh hum kaise kal tak ka wait karenge," she said turning to Zoya. "Sorry tamatar, main kosish karahi hoon," Zoya said upset. "Bhabhi...main jaanti hoon keh aap Humaira Bhabhi keh saamne bahut strong hone ki kosish karahi thi par aap mere saamne roh sakthi hai. I promise keh main kisiko nahi kahongi," Najma joked causing Zoya to chuckle. "Thanks Najma," Zoya said pulling her in a side hug.
The next night, Zoya lay on her bed staring the ceiling of her dark room. Asad should be in the flight, she thought as a smile played on her lips. Suddenly, she felt a pain jolt through her body. Zoya clutched her abdomen as tears filled her eyes. She tried to sit up but the pain was too much to bear. "Kuch nahi hai, shayad aaj cramps thode zyada hai," she told herself. Zoya silently tried to overcome the pain she felt. She turned to see Najma who was peacefully sleeping next to her. Zoya tried to take deep breaths hoping the pain would subside. But, it didnt. The pain became worse and worse with each passing minute. Zoya put all her strength and sat up. She tried to reach for the jug of water on the night stand. Zoya picked up the jug and was about to pour the water in a glass when another strike of pain ran through her body. The pitcher and glass fell to the ground splattering into pieces. Najma jolted up from sleep hearing the noise. "Bhabhi...kya hua? Aap theek hai?" she asked worried. "Kuch nahi, bas thoda dard horaha hai," Zoya said, tears rolling down her cheeks. "Bhabhi...main Ammi koh bhulati hoon," Najma said as she got off the bed. "Nahi Najma, bas khabhi kabhi aisa hota hai. I think main stressed hoon na issliye. Thoda araam karungi toh theek hojaungi," Zoya told her. "Nahi Bhabhi, aap itni takleef main hai," Najma said and left the room. Zoya tried her to best to compose herself but the pain was getting horrible. It was worse than anything she has ever felt.
Soon, Dilshad and Najma rushed into the room. "Kya hua beta?" Dilshad asked. "Paata nahi Ammi, bahut dard horaha hai," she cried. "Najma, tum jao aur Abu koh bolo keh hospital phone kare. Aur sabh koh utao," Dilshad ordred. "Zoya...chinta mat karo beta, sabh theek hojayega," Dilshad comforted. "Ammi...itna dard kyun horaha hai?" Zoya asked. "Beta, shayad tume labor pains shuru hogaye hai," Dilshad replied, a little worried. "Kya? Aise kaise hosaktha hai. Abhi bahut time hai. I mean sirf 31 weeks huwe hai," Zoya said shocked. "Tum chalo hospital chalte hai," Dilshad said as she helped Zoya stand up. Looking at the sheets, Zoya realized that she was bleeding. "Ammi...yeh...," she said, scared about the babies. "Allah sabh sahi karega beta, chalo," Dilshad said. Soon, everyone was up. Farhan, Rashid, Dilshad, and Najma quickly took Zoya to the hospital. The doctors rushed Zoya in. "Doctor...kya hua hai? Aapne toh kaha tha keh abhi time hai," Zoya wondered. "Zoya, tumari babies move hogaye hai. Hume operation karna padega," the doctor said. "Nahi! Mere bacche," Zoya said holding her stomach. "Zoya, darne ki zaroorat nahi hai but we need to operate, please," the doctor explained. "Mujhe Asad ka wait karna hai," Zoya stated. "Zoya, Asad aata hi hoga beta par hum wait kaise karsakthe hai," Dilshad tried to reason with her. "Nahi Ammi, Asad keh bina mujhe dar lagraha hai," Zoya said adamantly. "Asad kaha hai? Kabh tak aayega?" the doctor questioned. "Bhaijaan toh flight mein honge, unne aane mein toh ek ghante se zyada hojayega," Najma replied. "Zoya, samajne ki kosish karo, you are bleeding we can't wait that long," the doctor said. "Mujhe Asad chahiye," Zoya cried. "I understand Zoya but I have to take you in, aap log please papers sign kardijiye," the doctor said to Dilshad. She just nodded. "Ammi please nahi," Zoya requested. "Zoya...tumari aur baccho kehliye yeh karna hi padega," Dilshad said sadly as she signed the papers. The doctors wheeled Zoya in leaving a tensed family in the hallway.
Time passed and they all waited for someone to come tell them how Zoya and the babies were. But, there was no sign of anyone. Dilshad was praying for the wellbeing of the mother and kids whereas Rashid, Farhan, and Najma sat on the chairs worried. They looked up to see Asad running down the corridor. "Ammi, Zoya kaha hai? Kaisi hai?" he asked panting for air. "Usse andar ley gaye hai beta, abhi kuch maloom nahi," Dilshad explained. Asad has landed when he received the message from Farhan that Zoya had to be taken to the hospital. He has immediately left and rushed here. "Kya hua tha? Woh toh bilkul theek thi," Asad said worried. "Ha beta, sabh theek tha. Lekin achanak dard shuru hogaya toh," Dilshad told him. He looked at the operation theatre as his heart raced with fear, excitement, nervousness...all at once. "Sabh theek hoga, Allah haina," Farhan said placing a hand on his brother's shoulder. Just then, the door opened and the doctor stepped out. Asad and the family walked up to her. "Zoya kaisi hai?" Asad asked. "Asad...betiya huwi hai," the doctor replied. He beamed hearing the joyful news, so did everyone else. "Aur Zoya?" he asked again. The doctor was apprehensive for a moment before she spoke. "Asad, Zoya ki bahut bleeding hogayi thi. Humne usse fluids aur blood diya hai lekin uske vitals bahut weak the issliye humne usse medically induce coma mein dalna paada," the doctor said. Asad looked at her stunned. His Zoya...his Zoya was in coma...Asad thought as he stumbled back in shock.
