Chapter 44
Two weeks later
The village
With dewy eyes, Kalpi looks about her... There is celebration everywhere... Her mother dancing away... Her father smiling reassuringly at her. She stares at the foreign substance on her finger... Her engagement ring... Looks up to her now fianc... Giving him a tight smile, when their gaze meet. Making her excuses, she leaves admist the celebrations... Slowly walking towards her home, her mind screaming, "I am engaged... I am engaged to another..." Tear droplets fall at her thoughts, feeling the avalanche of her emotions burst open, Kalpi races into her home, her soul crying out, "how can I marry another?"
Staring at Ragav's picture, Kalpi breaks down. Sobbing, she whispers, "I wish you had succeeded. I wish you had killed me... I can't bear the thought of somebody taking your place..." Hiccuping, she continues, "I know you don't love me... I know you never will... But I love you... Just as you succeeded in killing my soul, I wish you had succeeded in stopping my beating heart... I wish Aai never saved me... A life without you, I can tolerate, but a life with another..." Shaking her head, "I cannot bear."
Vithal stands by the door, unobserved, his heart aching as he hears his daughter pour out her pain. Wiping his tears, he prays to God, "please God, make her talk to me... Just once have her mention Ragav to me... You know I can't mention it first, I am bound by my word." He looks at his daughter and whispers pleadingly, "please come talk to me about Ragav... I have so much to tell you."
Hesitantly he takes a step forward... He stops, startled as a hand clasps his shoulder. Turning Vithal stares at Kamla, his expression filled with despair as she stares back with disappointment and accusation. With a sigh he looks one last time towards his daughter before heading out.
Relief seeps in as Kamla watches Vithal leave, she turns her attention towards her daughter, her heart heavy as she hears the cries of her grief. "I have to be strong. I can't weaken," Kamla whispers. Walking up to her daughter, she rues the day she sealed her daughter's happiness... Shaking her head, she strengthens her resolve, "no. My daughter will create new memories. She will live life. She will become my Kalpu again."
"Kalpi," Kamla calls out softly, not wanting to startle her. Kalpi turns, pulls her mum into a hug as she calls out, "Aai." Moments later, feeling slightly composed, Kalpi breaks the hug and says, "I am sorry Aai. I just needed..." "Shhh," Kamla interrupts, "you don't have to explain yourself to me." Staring into her daughter's eyes, searching for what she does not know, she says hesitantly, "Kalpi, you will keep your promise right... You will never tell anyone about Ragav... You..." Kalpi takes her mother's hand into hers and says reassuringly, "I promised you Aai. I shall never speak about Ragav to anyone, not even baba."
Patting her daughter's cheek and resting her palm on the cheek, teary eyed, Kamla says emotionally, "you know I love you." Nodding, Kalpi placing her hand on her mother's, replies softly, "I love you too."

Two weeks later
The village
Kalpi stares at the mendhi on her hands, crying her heart out, her gaze resting on a letter that is not R. Feeling suffocated, unable to bear it any longer, she wipes her tears, takes the bottle of poison, stares at the picture of the man, her heart calls husband... With a silent salute, she lifts the bottle to her lips, intending to drink the poison... Whispering... Today my heart will stop beating... Today I shall be free of my heartache.
Her conscious rebels, saying, "stop it. When did you become so selfish?"
Surprised, she replies, "selfish! I have never been selfish."
Her conscious berates, "oh and what you are doing right now is what? Have you thought of your parents?"
Tears falling, Kalpi replies, "I can't bear it... I can't bear to call another, husband... I can't bear that somebody would take Ragav's place..."
Her conscious scolds, "gosh girl! He tried to kill you! He used you callously... And you still love him!"
Crying in earnest, Kalpi replies, "I still love him." Laughing she adds, "but that is love na, to love someone despite their flaws... To love them despite knowing how ugly they are."
Her conscious, resorts to emotional blackmail, "is this how you thank your parents. They are living in this hovel, just to keep you safe... So that your heart can keep beating. Instead you want to do what Ragav was unsuccessful in doing."
Kalpi, caresses Ragav's picture and says, "he was successful... He killed my soul... I am just an empty vessel... A zinda lash... I am tired. I just want release."
Her conscious attacks, "zinda lash... In that case, nothing should affect you... So this marriage should not affect you." Then continues imploringly, "would you rather your parents become lifeless... Because their joy, their meaning of life is you."
Tears falling, Kalpi lets go of the bottle of poison and says, "I cannot do this to Aai and baba... I can't."
Please note that there no excuse to commit suicide. It is only when one loses faith in God that they would resort to such an act. Life is about facing your trials and tribulations... About passing the tests of life. Kalpi needing a release from her pain is bakwas. She has chosen to stop fighting. One should never stop fighting... Just as there are bad days... There are good days. I am showing Kalpi at her weakest moment and how she chooses not to accept the cowards way out.
Ragav stares at his phone in disbelief, his eyes a red haze of anger. Maya races into his office, Pakhi in her wake. She says in excitement, "Ragav I need to talk to you. Kalpi is..." "Alive," Ragav completes her sentence. Turning, he stares at her furiously, continues, "she is at the village." (Sorry guys, don't know Indian geography)
Her smile faltering, Maya asks, "how do you know? I just found out." Too hurt... Too furious, he does not notice Pakhi. Turning away, looking out of the window, he snaps, "I want to leave within the hour. Make it happen." Walking towards the door, he notices Pakhi, turns to look at Maya, asks, "what is she doing here?" Hesitant, Maya replies, "she works here. She found Kalpi." He glares at Pakhi and yells in a booming voice, "get out." Pakhi scrambles out of the office. Ragav stands at his office door and says in a booming voice, "Priya, call my lawyer."
As the car gets closer to the village, Ragav's heart skips a beat, despite his anger... He was conflicted... A part of him was excited... Happy that he would see his Kalpi again... The other part of him was angry that she would lie to him... Would fake her death... Would prefer to be away from him... Reject him. "Damn it Kalpi! Why couldn't you have faith in me," his heart cries out, "damn you for making me love you and then leaving me," his mind snaps angrily.
Staring murdously at Kalpi, dressed as a bride... "My wife!" He thinks with disgust. Ragav strides towards the mandap. Kalpi stops taking the phera. Her eyes drinking in the love of her life... Her heart smiling, "he has come for me... He loves me." Seeing the murderous glint in his eyes as he approaches her, Her happiness falters, "maybe he has come to kill me."
He glares at Kamla maa, his gaze warning her, "don't you dare interfere." He stops in front of Kalpi, his eyes filled with accusations... With anger, he says in a calmness he does not feel, "glad I am not late." Kalpi frowns, confused. Ragav continues, "you need to sign these documents so that I can release you." Kalpi asks hesitantly, "the bond sir?" Ragav smirks, replies, "yes of course. The bond." Placing his hand strategically so that she does not see the title of the documents, he hands her a pen and says sharply, "sign." Kalpi quickly signs, not wanting to anger him, instinct warning her that he was not as calm as he portrayed himself to be.
Taking the signed documents, Ragav says with a hard glint in his eyes, "congratulations" and turns to walk away. Kalpi watches on, her heartbreaking... He is leaving me... This is goodbye.
Ragav stops several feet away, in front of Maya, hands her the documents and says, "have these filed in court." Confused, she frowns as she look at the documents... Reading the words divorce, she snaps her attention back at him. Too late for Ragav was walking back towards Kalpi.
Watching him come towards her menacingly, Kalpi takes an instinctive step backwards... Away from him... Her heart racing... Suddenly scared. He grabs her arm, his fingers biting into her flesh. "Sir, you are hurting me," Kalpi says.
Ragav twists her arm, pulls her towards him and locks her arm behind her back, thinking in response, "not as much as you have hurt me." Not caring that he was hurting her, his eyes cold, he says cruelly, "did you honestly think I would let you go. I. Own. You. Never forget that." Pulling her closer, he continues, "since playing the role of my wife was not to your taste... You can now play the role of my mistress." Before his words can sink in, he kisses Kalpi punishingly... Not caring that they were not alone. Lifting Kalpi over his shoulder... He nods at his chief bodyguard... And walks to the car.
