Chapter 12
We walked down the stairs together, the whole hall was full of guests, she turned her neck and looked at me in surprise, so many people had gathered to congratulate her," suniye, what was the need to invite so many people?" I slipped my hands in the pockets, it was a special day for her and I only wished to see her happy. Her parents came forward immediately to hug her, she embraced and smiled back at them, I too smiled inwardly seeing her joyous.
Excited bulbul came and dragged her to cut the cake, we all followed her quietly. She lifted her eyelids once to glance at me, I blinked my eyes as she cut the cake carefully. She touched daadi's feet before feeding her then went up to her mother to do the same. Bulbul stuffed her mouth with a big piece when purab elbowed me before complaining," what is this bhabhi, you're feeding everyone except abhi" her face turned crimson on hearing this and she lowered her head silently.
I enjoyed seeing her go all shy. She slowly cut one more piece and placed it on the plate then offered me without lifting her head. My hands were still in my pockets , forcefully making her raise her head and glance at me. Our eyes met, her lips stretched in a smile seeing my right hand come up to take the piece of cake. Keeping the plate back she dropped her gaze once again and turned her back to me.
The party was in full swing with loud music playing in the back ground, some guests were enjoying the food while others were surrounding the bar having a couple of drinks, I didn't feel like to have one instead opted to have an early dinner. My eyes scanned the entire area and stopped at her, she was busy chatting with her mother, it didn't really seem to be a pleasant one from where I was looking. Shrugging my shoulders I continued to dig into my plate. A moment later tanu joined both of them, however she left her mother's side at once and walked away. I shook my head thinking, she was certainly a tough nut to crack and could give full competition to my level of temper. Tanu looked around in embarrassment checking whether anybody had noticed how she had behaved with her.
After so many months our eyes met once again, a sense of irritation crept inside me, she couldn't stare back at me with her guilt filled eyes even though her husband was standing next to her. Her eyes scattered the floor as she nervously played with the edge of her sari, what she did or thought now no longer mattered to me but one thing that surely mattered to me was that a huge distance had been created between the two sisters and for which somewhere I held myself responsible. No matter how hard pragya tried to hide, this whole bitterness with her sister was definitely affecting her and that disturbed me to quite an extent. Handing over my plate to the waiter, I walked in her direction and stood beside her, she was lost in gazing at the moon outside. I cleared my throat, she came out of her thoughts and glanced at me.
" what's the matter? With so many gathered around why are you standing here all alone?" I asked.
" sometimes even a crowd can make you feel alone." She replied softly, I shook my head agreeing with her, you always don't need a crowd to deprive you of your loneliness, sometimes just the presence of that one special person who could lift your spirits up and make you feel at peace.
" suniye can we go away from this noise?" she asked all of a sudden, I shrugged my shoulders, if that would make her feel better then I'd no problems.
We left the party and drove to a place of her choice, a beach. It was wonderful walking on the cool sand bare feet after escaping from that loud and heavy music. It was a quiet and pleasant evening with hawkers selling street food, I knew she didn't have dinner," you must be hungry, wish to eat something?" I asked, she looked around and pointed towards an old man selling golgappa's , couldn't she have something better?
Leaning my back against the rocks I gazed at the magnificent sky which was filled with glittering stars but her eyes were fixed on that full moon which shone brightly over the waters. Cool and mild breeze was blowing which played, touched and then got mingled in her open hair, my fingers itched to move her hair back, it was a cloudless sky, with everything out in the open then why was her face hiding behind those long tresses? Maybe she read my mind, her hand went up automatically to tuck those curls behind her ear. She turned her neck and caught me admiring her, twisting my lips I said softly," what is, it that you keep searching in the moon?" I'd often seen her sitting alone, staring at the moon, she sighed deeply and replied," isn't it so beautiful..the moon brightens the stars and the night with it's light."
It felt really nice to see that child like innocence on her face and that longingness in her eyes for the moon in the sky, she continued further and slowly her face lost that glow as she said, "but every night is not fortunate to have its moon...some nights are dark and moonless." The pain the sadness reflected in her voice as well, true all nights were not the same but then nothing remained same forever. Things changed, circumstances changed, people changed, change was inevitable and for that life didn't stop, it had to move on and with that we too.
" this won't last forever. Sometime later moon will come out again and night will embrace it.. Then night won't remain dark and alone." I said trying to instill some positivity inside her.
She smirked and looked into my eyes confidently before saying," but you know sometimes this moonless and lonely night stretches so long that life itself comes to an end."
Shaking my head I thought, why was she so bitter and harsh on herself? Why was she holding on to her painful past so tightly, especially when it was not allowing her to move on. I frowned at her and asked in surprise," why is there so much of bitterness in your words?" she blinked her eyes agreeing with me and replied," truth is seldom sugar coated."
Curling my lips I took some sand in my fist and told her," our past is like this sand. No matter how tight our fist is, this sand will slip away because it's past. It has to pass. Whether we want it or not." Life didn't stop for anybody nor should we allow our past to ruin our present, that's what she herself taught me, if her presence, her fiercely possessive and protective attitude toward me and her undying support could free me from the clutches of my past, couldn't I do the same for her? Opening my fist I told her," don't cage yourself in your past. Open your hand. Set yourself free."
She needed to forgive tanu, forget her past and look ahead. Why was she restricting and depriving herself of the happiness around?
She glanced at me with pain filled eyes and didn't utter a word, it hurt me to see her hiding her sorrows from me. After spending so many months together, was I still not worthy enough to share her pain?
" what kind of grief is this, that floats in your eyes but refuses to escape your lips?"
She lowered her gaze at once and replied sadly," not every grief lessens when shared." Frustrated and annoyed with her silence, I dropped the sand from my palm in irritation.
Suddenly she let out a cry, the sand had accidently gone into her left eye and she was rubbing it vigorously. Moving her hand away I cupped her face and said firmly," stop rubbing your eye, it will hurt more." I blew into her eye slowly for some time, then asked her," is it okay?" she stopped getting hassled and looked at me. I didn't know why but her eyes welled up and she appeared so distressed and helpless that it broke my heart into pieces.
" pragya, I am and shall always be there for you, if you see darkness around, I'll be your light, if you stumble, I'll hold you and not let you fall ever." I wished she gave herself a second chance, happiness a second chance. Her lips quivered as a tear trickled down her eye and landed on my thumb, though unwillingly but for the first time she shared her tears with me.
I moved back and said," it's getting late. Let's go home" she nodded a no and said," no, I wish to stay here some more. The sound of crashing waves shall silence the noise inside me."
She rested her head on the rock behind and closed her eyes, within seconds again she had closed herself to the world and to myself in particular, suppressing her inner voice by the sound of waves crashing on to the shore. I glanced at the tear drop on my thumb which shone like a pearl in the moon light, there was a time when I wanted her to cry and vent out all her grief and tonight when she was doing just that it twisted my heart.
It was close to midnight when I stood up and brushed off the sand on my clothes, turning back I saw her sitting peacefully with her eyes shut, even though I didn't wish to disturb her but still the night was getting cold and we'd to return home.
" pragya !" I called out softly and extended my hand, she opened her eyes and her gaze moved from my hand to my face and then dropped. My open palm hung in the air for some seconds before I brought it down thinking she'd not hold it and turned my neck to the other side when her soft and slender fingers touched mine and she stood up holding them. Our hands met only for a moment as she took it back immediately. I began walking, hoping a day would come when she'd hold my hand on her own, without any hesitance.
I'd never imagined that someone could have such a deep impact on me, whose smile would brighten my day, whose tears would weigh so heavily on my heart and whose pain would make me forget mine completely. Since when my life started revolving around hers, I had no idea. Lost in my thoughts, suddenly I felt her dupatta land on my head and shoulder. It was getting chilly and looking behind I found her rubbing her arms. Taking two steps back I wrapped the dupatta around her securely and was about to turn when I noticed her eyes getting wet once again. I didn't know why but this time I felt that those tears were not for tanu or her past but were meant for me, which made feel all the more horrible.
I parted my lips to ask but then stopped, maybe tonight I'd said more than I should have, maybe tonight I'd managed to touch some untouched chapters of her story which made her eyes turn moist.
