The Next Day
She sat in her room watching TV as no one was letting her do anything. She flipped through the channels trying to find something she would like when her phone rang. The number was unknown to her, but she picked it up anyways.
"Hello?"
The voice she heard brought a smile to her face...
"Hi Ms. Iyer, it's me Raman."
"Hi! How are you? And how is Ruhi? I hope her fever is gone."
"I am fine and so is Ruhi. How are you? I hope you're not taking too much stress."
"Not at all, I am much better now. Amma and Mihika, my sister have me sitting in bed all day like I am some kind of royalty."
"That's great. They are doing the right thing. Anyways I called you to let you know, I have your college certificate with me. That day it got mixed with my papers. I just saw it and thought I'd let you know."
"Oh that's no problem, I will come by and pick it up later on today."
"And I also wanted to let you know that you had been selected for the job even though you didn't complete your interview, your qualifications were the highest. The job is all yours if you still want to do it."
"Oh my God! That's great and of course I want to do it. Why wouldn't I?"
"I just thought you would find it weird, working with me, since our equation could change."
"That's a personal equation and you were the one that said everyone gets the same treatment no matter what. So if we do get together it shouldn't affect us professionally, right?"
"You're right, but I just want to make sure you didn't change your mind after the hospital trip."
"Not at all. I am perfectly fit to work and I would still love to do the job."
"Alright then, drop my office at 5 and we can talk about the last few details."
"I will be there. Thank you so much! Bye."
"Umm wait, I actually...umm I was wondering if you would want to come over to my place afterwards to meet Ruhi and maybe stay for dinner."
He said it all in one go preparing himself for rejection. He was going too far, gosh she would think he was hitting on her. He was being too fast, why couldn't he take back his words? He seriously felt like a teenager asking a girl out for prom right now. This was going to be embarrassing and awkward.
"I would love to Mr. Bhalla!"
"You would?!" he was completely taken back by her agreement.
"Of course I can meet my little pumpkin and even have some Punjabi dinner." She giggled over the phone.
"Pumpkin?"
"Sorry, but she is so chubby and cute, so I called her pumpkin."
"No need for a sorry, it's really sweet! Anyways I have to go attend a meeting, so I will see you in the afternoon."
"No problem, see you later!"
PSR Offices- 4:30PM
Raman and Ishita came out of the building after finishing up all the paperwork necessary and after Ishita had a tour of the whole office. They both walked into their own cars and Raman signalled Ishita to follow his lead, since she had never driven to his house and although he had told her directions, he wanted everything to go smoothly.
She drove right behind him and they headed to his house. They were right on track for most of the route, but a few minutes away, he looked through his rear view mirror and didn't see her car. He looked back and didn't spot her car anywhere.
Where could she have gone? Did she know her way around this side of the city? Has she taken a wrong path? He panicked at the thought of her being lost and moved his car to the side and called her. She didn't pick up...so he dialed her number again. He heard 4 rings and she still didn't pick up, he was about to hang up when he heard her voice...
"Hello..."
"It's me, where are you? I looked behind and you were gone."
"Sorry, but a group of bikers cut me and I got left behind while you went ahead."
"Alright I am waiting for you on the side."
"Thank you!"
She caught up to him 5 minutes later and they both continued to drive, but made it his duty to look back every couple of seconds to make sure she was still with him...
Raman's House- 5:15PM
As he opened the door and they walked into the house, the whole place was filled with the sound of Ruhi's cries. He ran to his room dropping everything and she followed behind. They entered the room to Ruhi wailing in her crib. She had thrown up after being fed and had evidently been crying for so long, but no one was around to hear it. Only God knew how long she had been crying for. As Raman wiped her face, he turned towards Ishita and asked her to leave. She didn't ask why and just stood by the door of his room. She saw him carry Ruhi over to his bed as he went to the bathroom and turn on the water. As he came back he picked of his phone and dialled a number. She assumed he was calling the person in charge of Ruhi and she was right because the first thing he said was...
"Where are you?!"
"Why did you leave her alone!?!" he yelled in a booming voice.
"The stupid grocery could have waited!" she figured he was talking to the maid she had seen yesterday.
"So what if I was coming home in 5 minutes?! I was stuck in traffic today."
"You have been told to be with her at all times. Don't you get what that means?"
"You know what? Don't show me your face ever again. There is no need to come here from tomorrow onwards!"
She stood in the corner of the door terrified of this side of him that she just saw. For a moment she wondered if she had done the right thing by wanting to marry this man in front of her. But she realized she had been too quick to judge as she saw him slump down onto the bed next to Ruhi. He picked her up as gently as possible and he had tears in his eyes as he said...
"Ruhi I am so sorry baby. Papa will never let this happen again."
He got up and carried her in one arm and tried to open the closet, but was struggling as he tried to hold Ruhi carefully. She felt horrible for judging him when his mind at that moment had been overpowered by the concern for his daughter as he saw her in that state. So she went over to help him to make things easier for him and to feel better herself.
"I will hold her." She said as she extended her arms.
"No it's alright. You should stay outside or else you will feel sick because of the smell of Ruhi's clothes."
She smiled at his concern and nodded before leaving the room.
"Just call me if need help." She said as she left to step out.
"Just open the cupboard door and then wait outside. The next thing I would like to deal with is you vomiting too." He said the last words playfully and sarcastic.
She opened up the door and waited outside his room for them to come outside. As she stood outside, she heard him talk to Ruhi playfully in her tone and she heard Ruhi's squeals and coos as he talked. She smiled at their little conversation and realized the reason behind him being so unsure of her being able to care take of Ruhi was because of things like these. If someone whose only job was to take care of Ruhi failed to do so, then no wonder he had doubts she wouldn't be able to fulfill her needs. She just hoped there was away she could tell him she would never be careless with Ruhi. She snapped back into reality as she heard the water stop running. She walked into his room as he was coming out with Ruhi wrapped up in a towel. She offered to dress Ruhi up since she couldn't do anything else and he agreed as he pointed to the cupboard. She pulled out orange one piece PJs which she thought would be comfortable for her.
"You are really going to look like a pumpkin now." She giggled and Ruhi also joined in gurgling at Ishita.
She dried up Ruhi and put her into her night clothes as she tickled her in between giggling herself and earning giggles from the infant. As she finished, she picked her up and the trio walked outside into the living room to play.
"Do you put anything on her hair?"
"No why?"
"It's quite dry, you should try using some oil. Don't use not too much, just a small amount since she already has beautiful hair, though it's just a bit dry."
"Maybe you will do that for her if things work out."
"Maybe I will...or...maybe I won't"
They both looked at each other and shared and eye lock where their eyes questioned each other, asking what if this didn't work out, what will happen to them?
There were brought of the trance by Ruhi dropping her rattle on the ground. They both reached over to pick it up and Ishita backed off as Ruhi was in her lap. As Raman handed the rattle to Ruhi, Ishita tried to divert their minds from what they were thinking about.
"You know I don't get why you think she is difficult to take care of. She is so easy and calm." she spoke up trying to divert the topic.
"I guess you were right when you said you two shared something. She doesn't stay this calm and is fussy when she is getting dressed. But just wait until she is fed and has energy, then you will never say she is easy."
"We will see about that then."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Oh God! You were right. She is so energetic, I don't think anyone could tell she is weak or premature."
Ishita exclaimed as Ruhi squealed and played joyfully with her toys on Ishita's lap after drinking a whole of bottle of milk and having Ishita burp her.
"She is like her mother. Full of energy, loud and chirpy."
His smile disappeared and he got lost in his own thoughts. Knowing he was going to marry for the second time, she knew he was either divorced or a widower. She could ask him about his wife, but she chose to keep quiet as she would appear too nosy and intruding and would further remind him of his wife which she didn't want to do. But after a few minutes for some reason she felt bad and unusually hurt as she saw the sadness on his face and the tears forming in his eyes. So she decided to ask him not caring about what he thought...
"Is everything okay? Do you want to talk about her?"
"I am fine, don't worry too much about me."
"I won't worry, but Ruhi won't like to see her dad upset. Right Ruhi?"
Ruhi smiled and looked at Ishita and then turn her head towards her dad and waved her arms as if asking to be with him.
"See even your little daughter can see you're unhappy."
He grabbed Ruhi and snuggled her close to him and he wiped off his tears and smiled at the small baby and then looked up at Ishita gratefully as if thanking her. She smiled back as if reassuring him and let him have a moment with Ruhi as she got up to make a phone call. When she came back, she saw Raman and Ruhi playing on the floor on her play rug. She kneeled down onto the floor with the two of them. Raman looked up and her as she was kneeling down...
"What are you doing?"
"I am sitting on the floor with you two? Did I do something wrong?"
"No, but just be careful please."
"You're a really over protective person aren't you?"
"No, I just don't want you hurting yourself. After seeing you faint, it scares me."
"I won't, I will be fine. Just relax."
They both played with Ruhi on the floor and they got so engrossed being with her, they completely lost track of the time. They both were smiling, laughing and enjoying themselves after many, many days. They smiled and laughed as Ruhi lay on her stomach and tried to get up, as she tried to put her thumb into her mouth, and they smiled as she smiled...
Their playful day started to come down to an end when the doorbell rang. It was food delivery as they didn't have the time or energy left to cook after all that happened. As Raman brought in the food, Ishita put Ruhi into her rocking chair where she would play with the toys that hung from the bar in front of her as the two ate.
"Sorry you will have to eat this food from outside because Ma has gone to a sick friend's house for the night. I tried to order whatever seemed the best for you to eat, but it's still not like homemade food." He said as he set the package on the table.
"It's alright, anyways nowadays Amma would never let me eat junk food. It's like a cheat day!" she said as she opened that packages.
"How in the world are so you positive about things? Honestly it's something I would never be able to do." He said he brought out plates for them and started to set the table.
"Things happen in life and they change you Mr. Bhalla. I wasn't always like this. But now I feel I can either look on the bright side and keep myself happy or look at the negatives and sulk all my life about things. I choose to be happy, but I am not always positive, I do feel bad and there are days where I think everything is horrible, but those are rare days." She explained as she came forward and served the food for the two of them.
"It's not just your positivity. I mean I am so skeptical about this whole thing and as much as I know you, you are pretty confident. Where do you get that from?" he said as he started his meal.
"I have confidence on you actually." She said as she started to eat.
He stopped eating and looked deep into her eyes. They were telling the truth, but she had hardly known him for a few days and she thought she knew him so well.
"Me?"
"Yes you. I got the confidence the day I met you. You are a really kind and caring person. The small things you did for me showed me that. The way you asked me if I was okay when you came over, you didn't need to ask. When you took me to the hospital, instead you could have sent me with a driver. When you asked me if I was still stressed over the phone, you didn't have to and could have just gotten straight to business. "And just now, when you asked me to leave the room so I wouldn't vomit, telling be to be careful as I sat on the floor, and ordering food I will be able to eat. Most of these things showed me you cared for this child's health and mine as well. I guess this is where I got my confidence from."
"And just to confirm what I thought of you was your behavior with Ruhi. The way you want to make sure I will be just the perfect mom for her & the way you care for her it tells me how you are as a father. I saw how yesterday you were stressed and didn't sleep well because Ruhi was sick. The sadness in your voice when you talk about how she needs more attention, it shows how you can't see her in pain. Honestly I was scared when you yelled over the phone, but it had concern and care for Ruhi and I am sure enough you will take care of my baby similarly since you cannot seem to see anyone in pain or trouble. And you genuinely seem like a person who wants to see people happy in the world."
"Wow! Even I myself didn't noticed half the things you said I did. You really do notice small things."
"They seem small to you, but for me these are huge things that show the type of person you are."
"Is that a compliment?" he asked trying to lighten up the serious conversation. He knew he did something right when she chuckled and nodded.
"Yes, yes it is. You are a nice person Mr. Bhalla. Despite that anger I saw a while back..."
"You're nice as well..."
