Chapter 2
As the day progressed, all the college bodies involved themselves in a number of discussions on various topics that were planned for them. As the teams were shuffled and reshuffled after every activity Asad had his eyes fixed on Zoya. He knew it was wrong to keep looking at a girl like that and that too when she wasn't even aware of it but he just couldn't keep his eyes off her. It wasn't her eyes or her smile or for that matter any of her features that was captivating, it was the confidence that she oozed. Asad felt that she was the first girl who had come across as so confident.
In all his 22 years Asad had seen many girls but had never come across anyone like Zoya, he saw in her what he saw in himself, the way she carried herself, the confidence she displayed and the way she spoke reminded him so much of himself, as if she was his very own reflection.
Zoya had been noticing how Asad was constantly staring at her. She felt embarrassed at the constant attention. She avoided giving him any eye contact back, she didnt want to make it obvious that she knew, but at the same time she wanted him to stop. Having kept her gaze to herself for so long Zoya finally turned around and saw him look straight back at her, not being able to hold back any longer she walked up to him
"Hi"
"Hi"
"I don't know if you have noticed or not, but I know you have been staring at me. Do I have something on my face?" Asad smiled at her question and then nodded his head in confirmation. Zoya started rubbing her face in an attempt to remove whatever it was. She looked at him and raised her eyebrows in question and Asad just shook his head in the negative. Zoya looked at him confused. Asad leaned closer to her and whispered "Your confidence Zoya, I have never seen a girl as confident as you are. You are a lot like the person I see in the mirror every morning, I love this quality in you".
She took a step back and looked at him. She smiled and thanked him for the compliment. But before she could turn around she saw his smile soften and the expression in his eyes changed to something she couldn't decipher. She looked at him in confusion and then saw him raise his hand "Friends? " he asked nervously. Zoya looked at him and then at his hand that he had extended. She smiled at him and shook his hand "Yes, friends ".
Asad and Zoya started to spend a lot of time together mixing with each others group as well. It was becoming evident to all around them that the two had developed strong feelings for each other. Spending most of their free time together, they realized they had a lot in common. Both came from families that had worked hard to be where they were, their parents had both had love marriages, they were both the only child in the family and were therefore spoilt with the amount of love that they received, they both loved their parents more than anything else in this world and would do anything for them.
Asad left no opportunity to be around Zoya. Bringing along his own group he would take walks with her group trying to get to know more about her. He realized that he liked to hear her voice and see her expressions and reactions to everything. He loved how she walked with a little skip and how her hair flowed due to this. How she kept sweeping her hand across her forehead trying to tuck her fringe behind her ears and how she would smile at him whenever she caught him staring at her. He had even noticed the 2 beautiful dimples on her cheeks and had so wanted to poke his finger into them. He would smile at this thought and then his heart would take him to forbidden thoughts of how he would want to kiss her dimples. He had caught her deep in thought and then turning pink with her eyes widening and she would shake her head to remove whatever thoughts that were there.
Zoya too took care to spend as much time around him as she could. She knew that he kept staring at her and had even caught him out so many times. In the beginning it bothered her, but as they became friends and with the amount of time that they were spending together she found herself getting comfortable under his stares. She had noticed how he kept pinching the bridge of his nose when frustrated, how he rolled his eyes when he was given extra attention by the other girls who tried every trick to be friends with him. How he would stare at her with a tenderness that made her heart skip a few beats. How he would stretch and flex his arms and legs when he stood up. On more than one occasion Zoya had felt embarrassed at her own thoughts of how she knew he had a well-toned body and what it would feel like under her palms.
As the last day neared, Asad could feel his heart getting restless at the thought that it could be the last time he would see her, what made things worse was that he hadn't even expressed his growing feelings to her yet. As he sat in his room thinking about the last 5 days that they has spent together, Asad could be sure that Zoya felt the same for him. If not to the extent that he felt for her, there definitely was something, he knew, she felt too. Just thinking about that had his heart racing, though he knew what she felt, deep down he was nervous and didn't want to lose her as a friend.
Thinking about her and the little time that was left, Asad decided to take her out, just a casual dinner or a walk around the campus, whatever she would say yes to. He looked around the cafeteria but couldnt find her. He asked around and was finally able to locate her in the garden. He watched her from a distance and noticed that she was reading a book. Slowly he walked up to her and called out her name.
"Zoya" She looked up from her book and seeing him smiled at him in acknowledgement.
"Hey"
"Hi. Umm can I join you?"
"Yea sure" as he sat beside her she noticed him tapping his foot nervously. She looked at him questioningly and then looked at his foot. Asad followed her gaze and realized what he was doing. He stopped immediately and gave her a nervous smile. Zoya smiled back at him and asked " What is it Asad, you're looking nervous. Is there anything I can help you with? "
Asad looked in her eyes with such warmth that Zoya could feel her body erupt into goose bumps. She looked back into his eyes and saw such strong emotions that it became difficult for her to hold onto his gaze. She lowered her eyes feeling all flustered. Only when she heard him speak did she look back up.
"Zoya, tomorrow will be our last day here. I want to make the most of it". She looked in his eyes that looked so hopeful. "Since I have found a friend in you, I want to spend it with you, so we get to know each other better, so we can create memories around each other, memories that will remind us that we have another friend in another part of the country, memories that will always connect us".
Zoya looked at him for a few moments and knew that this was more than creating memories as friends; it was about how she felt for him and how he felt for her. She was not ignorant to how she had seen Asad staring at her most of the times, she knew how he had been moving around in the same circle as she did and how he had wanted to spend all his free time with her. He was not the only one who did all this. She too had been making efforts to spend all her free time around him. She knew from the start that there was a strong pull she felt toward him and so she felt excited at the thought of spending the last day with him. With a tender smile breaking on her lips she nodded her head, agreeing to his proposal.
Asad smiled wide at her and in excitement did what they both couldn't believe. He leaned over and hugged her tight Thank you so much for agreeing Zoya. You don't know how relieved I feel. I thought you might find all this very weird and may just walk off thinking am some psycho or something or may be that am trying to pull a cheap stunt here. Thank you ". As he let go of her he saw her red cheeks and then realized what he had done. With his eyes going wide he looked away feeling embarrassed at what he had done. Mumbling a soft sorry he quickly moved away.
Zoya could feel her heart racing so fast she knew he could hear its hammering too. She looked at him nervously and seeing the expression on his face broke out into laughter. Asad looked at her and couldn't hold back and he too burst out laughing. Zoya looked at him shaking her head said "Its ok Asad, it happens. Just that it was so unexpected and so spontaneous that it took me by surprise. Its OK". She said between her laughter. Seeing your expression I thought you would be upset as we have just met and all this might put you off, you might think am shameless".
Shaking her head in the negative she said "Its not like I have never hugged my friends or never been hugged by them out of excitement. I didn't know that a simple yes would get me this kind of response. So I was shocked"." Your yes is all that matters Zoya ". He said even before he could process, the words fell off his lips. Zoya looked at him, she could feel the intensity in his eyes and could feel the heat in his eyes warming her from inside out. Feeling flustered she didn't know where to look. She got up and started dusting her jeans "I think I will go to my room to rest before dinner time. I will see you in the cafeteria ".
Asad too got up and nodded his head. Zoya waived her hand and turned around walking in the direction of their dorms. Asad stood still looking at her retreating form and sighed realizing again that tomorrow would be their last day together. He looked up and said "Please work things out for me, do something Allah that I don't have to let her go". He shook his head and smiled said again "First, give me the courage to tell her what I feel for her".
Zoya entered her room smiling wide. She felt excited at the thought that she would get the last day with him. She had been feeling her heart sink at the thought of now going far away from him. She knew she felt very strongly for Asad and didn't know what to do with her growing feelings. She couldn't tell him as he would think she's too broad minded about all these things and she didn't want to keep them inside too. She sat at her window thinking about it all and then sighing loudly she decided to keep her feelings to herself for the time being. She didn't want to lose his friendship due to all this so decided to take a final call on this tomorrow, after the time they would spend together.
