19. Test of humanity - Part 1

They were driving to a larger military installation with Arjun.

"I am sorry," Khushi says softly. "I should have reacted but -"

"It's fine." Arnav says.

"I just froze. I didn't...I couldn't..."

"It's okay." He says again.

"It's not okay." She says hotly. "I don't know why you..."

Arnav swings around. "Zombies attacked us and you froze. A man died trying to save you. No, it is not okay because you or I shouldn't have been there in the first place. We aren't soldiers but this is the world we live in now where we all have to be one."

I'm guessing she was speaking to Capt Arjun. I understand base survival instincts have to come to the fore at a time like this, but how can she be expected to just bury the guilt that would come with having been the cause of a man's death. Seeing the dead and the dying all around you makes you so inured so soon?

To put offspring before you in the face of death is an evolutionary instinct assming that the gene pool is always trying to better the race with every generation

But what about those who die to save others out of a sense of duty? Would the race have been better off with Khushi dead given she is the one who froze - that is what would have happened to that gazelle in the Africa? Did Capt Arjun (assuming that is who died saving her) actually weaken the humans and simply prolong the process of the end?

Or does morality also come from a deep seated instinct for what is better for society at large

My mind is all over the place

Humans have amazing tenacity and great adaptability. Or at least, that's what the survivors are going with it when they justify their existence when most of their families didn't make it.

Not everyone is equipped to pick up a gun and start shooting. Some people just cannot.

I haven't decided if its Arjun or not. Thus I have refrained from giving a name.

Its an interesting perspective. With so few of them left, should the fight be done consciously for those who can progress what remains of this race? It is going to be a continuing battle. They still aren't aware how to stay put in one place and just live. It isn't in humanity's trait to be that way. They always want more. They want progress. They want to achieve. The curiosity helps along the way.

Morality is a sense of rightness in a given context. Its a sense of doing majority of what society feels is the right thing to do. There was a time in this world where getting married at the age of 10 or 11 was okay. But now it isn't. And that's because changing times, changing people change the rules of the world.

Well lots of things happen.
Arnav is right that at time like this every one should behave like soldier but everything is not in our control. Like the way Khushi freezes. Some act fast and some don't when face such thing.
Of course they can't go on like this and have to figure out some way to survive.
Loving this.

Reading this is a daily routine now.
The shifting of nature is bringing beings back to their primal roles apparently
