Part-2

She was alone in the Haveli, her in-laws have gone for a marriage party at a distant place, and even the maids were taken, why not? After all they too have the right to celebrate, to be happy, to take part in religious festivals, in marriage ceremonies, in cultural functions, but she? Yes she has no right to be happy and to participate in any celebrations, because...

But she has no regrets, because she has not been taught to protest, she has not been taught to go against the wish of elders, they are against the dignity of her family. She was standing lost in her thoughts, she was a girl of 21st century, though she was never exposed to city life, but she was educated, somewhere she new everything happening with her was morally wrong, it was even legally wrong, but her upbringing can never allow her to protest.

After 2 days, still her in-laws have not returned, it was an lazy afternoon, she was in her room reading a book, it was actually her English Poetry book of class 12, she has always kept the book hidden in her belongings after she came to her in-laws house, or else in a remote town, who will allow her to have access to story books, all her life she loved reading, but yet again her upbringing can never allow her to even voice out that she wants to read story books, cause reading is so not girly, education is all a boy thing. The book contains a poem, of a Valliant Knight "The Highway Man" she has always dreamt that in her life there will be a Prince Charming, who will someday come and take her away to his dream land, love her, kiss her long hairs, she truly used to think about all these when she was in her 11th, but then one sudden day she faced the reality, she came to know that her dreams has no existence, that he doesn't have the right to dream about any man, how could she? How can a married girl, dream about another man apart from her husband?

That day evening there was a knock on the Haveli door, she went to open the door, she was bit disappointed, as now she will even loss the independence to read books, and live in a land of fantasy which she loves to do nowadays, but then she is not supposed to feel that because she is from a decent family, and the reputation of a family depends on the way the girls of the family behave. So with a bright radiant smile she went to open the door. As soon as the door was opened was standing a young man, handsome dashing standing with a broad smile, quite attractive in his early twenty's with a bag pack at his back and a American Tourister trolley on his left hand, seeing the man she identified and welcomed him in, she has seen him numerous time in photo albums, which her mother-in-law has shown her, to make her recognize the family members, so by seeing him she understood, he was Mr. Swayam Shekhawat. After he came in, his eyes were searching his family members, he ignored her, as he has never seen her before, but she served him with snacks, and tea and also informed him that family members were out for a marriage ceremony and will return next day. That night after dinner Swayam was angry, irritated and frustrated he was roaming in his room, reason was he called his parents to tell them about his sudden arrival, to surprise them as he has returned after 9 years from abroad completing his studies but when he enquired about the young girl his anger had no limit, he couldn't even think how much uncultured was his family and how heartless brutal can they be, but his self thought was broken with a knock on the door.

T-Aap ki doodh (milk) sasuma (mother-in-law) ne kaha tha aap ko sone se pehele raat ko den eke liya. (Your milk, mother-in-law said to give you before sleep)

T-ha aap bidesh mai thae, sasuma ne bataya...aap so jayiyaaa (you sleep) bohot raat ho gayii hai.

She was going away, suddenly she saw a book on his bed, she looked at it, and paused for a sec, but then she couldn't control herself so she asked

T-Woh ma baba ne kaha ki it happened when I was 3...

Sw- Yeah but I don't remember, actually from 5 I was in Mumbai, with my uncle and then I came back once after 10th and from then I was in abroad.

T-Devarjii...

Sw-nahii Taani, bhai bulayo, I alwats longed to have a sister seeing my friends having such a loving relation with their sisters, tum mujsee bohot chotii ho, and I don't believe in the nonsense act committed by ur and my family, so let's be friends, and u will be my sister.

T-saab gussa karenge

Sw-That I will see...achha Taani kuch apne bare mai batayo.

T-mai ma baba ke sath rahtii thi, I was studying bachpan se mujhe parne ka interest tha, pehele ma baba ne bohot danta but baad mai they allowed me, govt school mai maine parha, 10th mai result bohot ache thae, but baba ne 11 th mai admission lene ke liya manna kar diya, phir teacher didi ne kaha then he allowed me, 11 th mai parh rahi thi, ak din school se ghar ayii then I saw your parents, that day I came to know when I was just 3 years, I was married to your elder brother Veer Shekhawat, he was 13 then, woh mujse 10 saal bare thae, I have never seen him before, ush din peheli baar dekha tha, they announced that they came to take me after the "Gauhna Ceremony". That night I cried a lot, my world was shattered into pieces, ak baar soocha ki I will commit suicide, koshish bhi kiya tha, but baba ne pakar liya aur he made me promise, that I will not try ever to do that, bohot rone ke baad it was decided that I will be allowed to complete my 12th, aur exam ke baad I will be send to in-laws, but in between during my exam, the news came your brother died in an accident, truly speaking I was happy that now nobody will take me back, but then after last exam, your mother came, all elders, decided that I have to perform "Shrahad" Death rituals of my husband, then I was brought here, colours were snatched from my life, as I became an widow, jab result aya I was not allowed to take that but one of my school friend came and gave me secretly, I couldn't even cherish my achievement, from then i.e. from last 7 months I am here.

When she completed saying, Swayam was bursting in anger, growing up in a complete different atmosphere, he was feeling guilty for the deeds of his own family, a feeling of hatred was running in him, his blood was boiling in anger, he couldn't even gasp how could they be so inhuman, firstly they had committed a sin years ago indulging themselves in the process of child marriage which is strictly a crime according to law, and now when his brother died they are forcing her to live the life of an widow, he was expecting that she will break down into tears after describing her fate, but he was surprised that she was not in tears, because they are no more present they have dried up, just when a teenage girl starts seeing dreams of her future, feels butterfly in their stomach, when a pair of eye of an opponent sex looks at her, when dreams and aspirations seems to touch the sky, at that time Taani lived her whole life from a teenage girl suddenly she became a married women and then instantly a widow, she has seen her husband once for 10 mins hardly, but now she is his widow of that person, her life is devoid of colours, happiness, and even proper food, as widows are not allowed to eat non veg and spicy foods, she is Mrs Taani Veer Shekhawat, widow of Late Veer Shekhawat.

Note from the writer:

Readers may assume that I have written to much friction but the truth is in our country till child marriage prevails in the remote districts of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Assam. Small incidents are reported in other districts too.

Child marriage most often occurs in poor, rural communities. In many regions, parents arrange their daughter's marriage unbeknownst to the girl. That can mean that one day, she may be at home playing with her siblings and the next, she's married off and sent to live in another village with her husband and his family - strangers, essentially. She is pulled out of school. She is separated from her peers. And once married, she is more likely to be a victim of domestic violence and suffer health complications associated with early sexual activity and childbearing.

ICRW's early research provided a deeper understanding of the scope, causes and consequences of child marriage.

So thought of putting this social cause in the form of a story, and what better than our only beloved TAAREY.

Some thing I wanted to share:

I came across the following news when I was surfing for some matter to celebrate Women's Day in school, and then I came to find this, the question arises why do we celebrate Women's Day...to show respect to women in this way??

India: married as children (Its a true incident)

As she tells me what happened, she does not shed a tear or show grief. She talks in a matter-of-fact style, answering most questions with hei (yes) or na (no). And while she has never told anyone about Islam forcing himself on her, she does not act like it is a big secret. Rather, it is simply the life she knows.

As we chat, children, men and women from the village repeatedly gather at the door to get a view of the action. The translators and I ask them to leave, over and over. We cannot shut the door because the home does not have electricity, and we depend on the natural light to see each other.

Islam also tries to stand by the door and watch. We ask him to leave, and he does. In a world where the men make the decisions, if he had wanted to stop the interview or insist on being in the room, he could have. But he allows his young wife to talk to us. We are therefore able to talk to Hasina and Islam separately.

Islam says that even though Hasina told him she was not interested in having sex, he pursued it because that is what married couples do.

"Since we're married, we will live together in good times and hard times, so we have to go for it," he says.

Islam says Hasina had problems during intercourse, but that when she felt discomfort, he stopped.

Hasina's story differs. She says that despite her evident pain, Islam continued.

The teenager clutches a piece of her sari in her hand as she talks. After the first time having sex, she says, Islam forced himself on her once a week. Hasina keeps her eyes focused on the dirt floor and pulls her sari up to her face, resting it against her cheek. She says she did not once enjoy the sex, but she felt like it was her responsibility to her husband.

Asked if Islam ever used protection, she says she does not know.

Islam says there were problems early in the marriage related to Hasina's young age.

"Because she was a small girl," he says as he chews on a piece of grass, "she wouldn't listen to me." He would tell Hasina to get him a glass of water or do chores for him, and she would refuse. The community got involved and taught Hasina what it meant in their village to be a wife.

"My parents, neighbors and sisters told her, He's your husband, you have to listen to him,'" he says.

Islam has a strong jaw line and deep dark eyes. Light coming through holes in the home's tin roof reflects on his full head of black hair, which he wears stylishly long in the front and brushed to one side. After the first year of marriage, he says, Hasina got better at following directions and doing what she was told.

It has been about two years since they got married and had their first sexual encounter, and a bump is evident under Hasina's sari. The 15-year-old with a heart-shaped, delicate face who walks around her village barefoot like the other children says she was happy to get pregnant. She thought it would make her an adult.

"When women bear a child they get respect," she says.

After chatting with us, Hasina goes to a small clinic set up in the village by the Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research. The organization, which receives support from the government, sends boats equipped with doctors, nurses and medical supplies to villages on the Brahmaputra to provide basic medical care. For many of the villagers " including Hasina " the boats provide them their first ever health care.

A nurse sits on a plastic chair in front of a bamboo home and asks Hasina questions about her background and pregnancy as children from the village gather around to watch. The antenatal checkup is Hasina's first visit with a medical professional. The boats had come a month earlier, but Hasina had not come to the clinic because her in-law's thatch-roof home is across a small stream, three kilometers away. Hasina says she has a government-sponsored community health volunteer, called an Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA), but the ASHA worker had not told her about the boat clinic.

The nurse examines Hasina and discovers that the girl, like 73 percent of pregnant women in Assam, is anemic. Her hemoglobin level, which should be at least 11 grams per deciliter, is 6.4. Such severe anemia is a result of chronic malnutrition, say doctors from the boat clinic. The nurse gives her extra iron and folic acid tablets.

When pregnant women are anemic, they are at greater risk of premature delivery, having a low-weight baby, falling sick from infectious disease and dying during childbirth. If anemic women or girls like Hasina have a complication such as a hemorrhage and do not have access to emergency obstetric care, they face the threat of bleeding to death.

Hasina says that when she goes into labor, she will stay home rather than give birth in a medical facility. She knows she would receive 1,400 rupees ($30) from the government to give birth in an institution, but she says it would cost about 1,500 rupees to take a boat and then public transportation to get to the primary health center on the mainland plus to pay for some of the medications. The government's National Rural Health Mission helps defray some of the costs of transportation, but Hasina says its not enough to make the trip worth it for her.

She also does not want to go to a health center because she does not want to be seen naked by male doctors, she says.

And finally and perhaps most importantly, Hasina says Islam wants her to give birth at home.

"Home is better," she says.

The nurse scolds Hasina like a parent, asking her what will happen if she has a medical complication and she is in a tiny hut on an island far from any trained medical professionals.

Hasina shrugs and says, "If I die, I die."

To this young girl, that is life.
