08. Him and Her

She is clutching a large pack of toothpaste when he sees her across the aisle. His legs take him there, the stuff in his cart rattling in symphony.

"You should stock batteries too." He winces at the inanity of it. Her eyes catalogs his cart.

"And medicine," she replies. "Are we paranoid?" She asks.

"Are we insane?" He counters.

"Maybe both." She wonders.

"Perhaps not enough." He shrugs.

"Maybe everything is indeed alright." She hopes.

"Maybe it's the end as we know it." He smiles.

"Arnav." He says.

"Khushi." She replies.

They walk away after exchanging address and phone numbers.

It's the end of the world as we know it - yeah R.E.M.

Love the crossing of their paths once more. Somehow out of grieving, they are into survival mode now as they grab everything they can get their hands on. Laughed at the battery one as I have one obsessive hubby for those stupid batteries. But they come in handy. They exchanged info. Would you look at how quickly that happened? Something about surviving a nightmare makes you grasp each moment as they occur.

I am still awaiting the next calamity.

Oh damn...An epidemic...! So many deaths.

I love how you have described in a few words what each person is feeling. Anjali has no tears left, Arnav is trying to get involved in mundane tasks, Khushi is preparing for the worst while Payal is still trying to come to terms with things, I guess.

I don't know how accurate it is but here, it does seem Nietzsche was right, "What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger."

I love how they meet again and how different the meeting is. In their earlier encounter they shared grief and pain. Here, there is an underlying acceptance of the tragedy; they are just trying to figure out, what comes next and how to deal with it...

P.S.: I like the pseudonym for the story :D
