Episode 15: A Tragic Past, A Tragic Future Part 1

The sun had risen. Damini was sleeping on the chair near Kabir's bed in his room. She had awoken, looking directly at Kabir first, who was still sound asleep. She looked at his solemn state, remaining silent. Damini got up from the chair and left the room, going into the hallway. As she walked in the hall, she was shocked once she entered the main room. Raja and Aryan stood before what was Sahir's dead body laying on the floor, in a coffin. Raja turned to Damini with a cold look on his face and said, "Get Kabir."

Five minutes later, Damini brought Kabir to the main room where he was shocked to see Sahir's dead body. Damini tried to console him, but he dropped to the floor in front of the body, unable to control his tears for Sahir. Raja bended down, placing his hand on Kabir as he turned away to hide his unemotional face." Aryan, arrange for the cremation." Raja ordered Aryan.

That evening, the cremation was performed. Sahir's body was buried under pieces of wood while Raja performed the cremation, setting his body on fire while Damini, Kabir, and Aryan watched in silence. Raja watched Sahir's body burn, thinking to himself, And this is what karma does to you.

Kabir had tears come down his eyes to which Damini held him on his shoulder to help him relax. Aryan left shortly, heading back inside the den.

In Kabir's room, Damini sat beside Kabir, trying to comfort him. Just then, her cellphone rang in her jeans pocket. "I'll be back." Damini told Kabir. Damini went outside, taking out her cellphone and answering the call to see it was Inspector Raina calling. "Hello?"

"I hope the body reached there."
"You sent it?"
"Who else?"
"What is it now?"
"Nothing. I just wanted to check on things. A surprise is coming for you all soon anyway."
"What do you mean?"
"You'll see, Damini. Just stay alive."

With that, Damini hung up the call and headed back in Kabir's room. Little did she realize was that Raja was listening to her conversation from the back of the wall, grinning evilly.

Inside, Damini sat with Kabir, holding him on his shoulder. "Kabir...what's done is done. Its time to move on." Damini told Kabir.

"I can't forget. Its true...Sahir was a selfish man. But I still treated him like my brother. If only we had made amends before he had died."
"That's the sad reality of life. Its time to move on."
"I wish I could. But something inside tells me that there is more to come."
"May I ask...where's Aryan?"
"In his room. Usually after things like this, he stays by himself...alone with that toy bear that he always destroys."
"What exactly is wrong with him? He seems to be a disturbed man."
"Then I haven't told you anything about him."
"All I know is about you and Sahir. What about him?"
"Its a painful story actually. Aryan was just like me and Sahir. He was orphaned at a young age and found by Raja bhai. Raja took him in and trained him just like us. That was the life for us since then. The trouble began when he was around twenty years old."
"What happened?"
"He met a girl...Rushali. She was just a girl that he would come across in the streets every now and then. And that was his first mistake at that age...love. Both of them fell in love. Raja bhai didn't like him seeing her and even told her to never meet him again. And secretly, Aryan kept the teddy bear that Rushali gave him as a token of their love."
"Did Rushali know about his identity?"
"She found out. But she told him to leave the job and the two could elope together away from the city. Aryan agreed, but Rushali wanted one thing for him to do. He asked him to steal twenty lakhs from Raja bhai and then they could run off. Aryan did as told and stole the money before daybreak and met up with Rushali on the roadside. That's when harsh reality hit him."
"What?"
"Rushali put him at gunpoint. Aryan then realized that she was not interested in him...but only in the money of the Killers Society. She would've killed him and gotten away with the crime had Raja bhai not come in and killed her."
"What happened after that?"
"Aryan was heartbroken. And most importantly, Raja bhai's trust in him was gone. That's probably why Raja has disliked Sahir and Aryan a lot. I'm the only one who hasn't broken his trust yet. And that's why Aryan always shoots that teddy bear...to get rid of the pain. But pain never leaves him. He's a poor soul. I myself pity him. But there's nothing I can do."

On the other side of the hall, in his room, Aryan stared at the teddy bear. It was shot so much that there was nothing much of it left. Aryan placed the teddy bear on the chair. He stood before it, holding his pistol towards it. "Sahir's now gone. But at least I can try to get rid of this pain once and for all," Aryan said as he held the pistol. "One last shot...and I'll free myself."

Aryan got ready to shoot. But as he pulled on the trigger, he himself was struck by a bullet in the back. The shock was unbearable. He slowly turned around in even more shock. Raja was holding the gun right at him. He then shot him again three times in the heart, and Aryan fell to the floor, dead.

Raja cackled. "Now you're free, my boy. Free to go to hell. Now I know how that other boy died. I might as well take out the other weak link. Now...I only need one loyal man to run things around here. And that's how it'll go."

Raja turned around to leave the room. But he stood, startled. Kabir and Damini were standing right before him, having witnessed Aryan's murder.

Episode 16: A Tragic Past, A Tragic Future Part 2

Raja and Kabir stared down upon each other as Kabir and Damini had witnessed Raja shoot down Aryan with their own eyes. "Kabir...what's wrong?" Raja asked Kabir, acting as if nothing happened.

"What is this, Raja bhai?!" Kabir asked.
"What are you talking about?!" Raja asked. "Nothing happened, Kabir. You're just-"
"Shut up!" Kabir shouted. "I saw it with my own eyes! You killed Aryan! How could you?! Already Sahir died! And now you kill my only other brother! Why?!"
"All right, fine! I won't play the nice game anymore. After all, its just you, me, and your precious lover...the black widow." Raja smirked.

Kabir and Damini remained silent, sharing surprised faces.

"What's wrong? You think I'm stupid? That I don't know about you two. One thing I must say...the heart is a very tender thing. Once its struck, you're either free as a bird or good as dead," Raja said as he walked around Kabir and Damini. "One thing I did like about you, Kabir...you were so innocent. Aryan was also innocent. But he was so foolish that he betrayed me by the struck of daylight. At least you respected me. That's what I had to take advantage of in order to run the Killers Society. Because unlike you, I have a proper motive for this society."
"What do you mean?" Damini asked.
"What do you think? That every person I sent you to kill was just a random goose chase for you?!" Raja asked Kabir. "No, no, my boy! I knew every one of those pieces of scum very well! Back in my day, I was ridiculed by those same people. I grew up with them. And what did they do to me? Mocked my status and my class! And why?! Just because I lack in their department! And you see...once the urge to destroy those who mock you kicks in, what do we do?! We kill them! Because karma works like that. But I didn't want it to come just in my hands. That's why I took you and many others in! I breeded you all to see what must be done with those who mock you for your living! And then the KIllers Society was born! But little did I know that I'd see the day that my own men...my own top men...would betray me."
"You're a sick man," Kabir said. "How could I have respected you all those years?! You've been toying with my emotons ever since I was a little boy!"
"Your emtions have always been toyed with, Kabir! Just look at the girl!" Raja shouted. "She's been toying with you this whole time!"
"What are you talking about?!" Kabir asked.
"I overheard her on the phone," Raja said as he looked at Damini, who looked away. "She's been working with the inspector. I know it!"
"Damini, this isn't true, right?" Kabir asked Damini. He looked deep into her eyes, searching for an answer. "Please say!"

But Damini remained silent. A tear went down her face. "She won't tell anything! But I will open her mouth for you!" Raja said as he then aimed his pistol at Damini, while Damini was turned to Kabir. And so, Raja fired his pistol and the bullet struck Damini at her heart. Damini fell into Kabir's arms, bleeding heavily. "Damini!" Kabir shouted as Kabir went on the ground, still holding Damini.

"I'm...I'm sorry, Kabir," Damini mumbled. And those were her last words. Damini closed her eyes. She was dead.

Tears bursted from Kabir's eyes as he looked down upon Damini, still holding onto her. "What a whimp you are?! Still crying for that witch!" Raja cackled. "Even you've become a weakling yourself! I might as well finish you then. Clearly I'm the only one made to run things around here."

Raja fired his pistol, aiming Kabir. Kabir took off from the room, running for his life, while Raja continued to shoot. Kabir hid behind Raja's chair, finding a gun on the floor. Raja continued to shoot, but each bullet never hit Kabir. Kabir took the gun, and closed his eyes. I have to do it then...for Damini, Kabir thought to himself. Kabir then rose from behind the chair and fired the gun at Raja. The bullet struck him in the chest, making him fall to the ground. He lied in the floor as his chest bled. Kabir stepped out from behind the chair, looking upon what was now Raja's dead body.

Kabir slowly walked out from the den as if he was in a trance. Thoughts rambled in his mind as he went aimlessly walking outside of the den while tears went down his face. He continued to walk as such until he heard, "STOP RIGHT THERE!" The words froze Kabir in his tracks. He turned around to see Inspector Raina five feet before him, aiming her gun right at him. And right behind her were the other officers of the Bandra Police Department. Kabir was surrounded and outnumbered.

"So I finally caught you! I told Damini about a surprise! But it looks like she's dead. Very unfortunate," Inspector Raina told Kabir. "Now...you have two options. One, come quietly with us to jail. Or two, run and we can shoot you like the bug you are. The choice is yours."

Kabir stood silent as tears continued to come down his face. He closed his eyes for a moment...and then opened them. "I won't run from you today. I'm tired of running. I'm tired of the lies. And I'm tired of the blood that has been shed for so many years. All my life I have ran from the law. But not today. Till this day, I have taken the lives of over fifty people," Kabir spoke. "Those lives will never come back. My innocence is gone. And now...I only ask of one thing from you. For every life I have taken, you return that with a bullet for each. My faith is now in your hands."

Kabir raised his hands upward, standing still as the tears filled his face. Inspector Raina looked at him, pondering over his words. She then let out a deep breath and said, "For the first time...I'll follow the command of a criminal. Your wish will be granted."

Kabir then closed his eyes, leaving his hands upward. And so, Inspector Raina and the other officers each fired their guns at Kabir, striking him with every bullet possible. They continued to fire until Kabir finally fell to the ground on his knees, having been shot over fifty times for every one fo the fifty lives he himself had taken in his lifetime. And so, he finally fell to the ground in a pool of blood, dead.

Epilogue:

At Bandra Police Department, it was a normal day at the police station. Not for everyone though. Inspector Raina remained in her office, still and silent. She was lost in her own world of thoughts that unraveled inside her head. She stood in front of the window of her office.

In all my years of working at this station, I've never felt sympathy for a criminal. Why? Yesterday was the first time I met a criminal who wanted to die at the hands of the police in that moment. A criminal who did not even run from the law when it had caught him red handed, Inspector Raina thought to herself as she looked out in the window. The demise of the Killers Society didn't cause its lesser known members to leave. They all went on their own ways. Even I have to find them. I may have solved this case...but at the same time, I'm no hero. I did not kill the last best man of the Killer's Society with my own will. He asked for it. And I just gave him what he wanted. Hence, no one should ever look at me as a hero. Because for this job, I took the worst measures to get what I wanted. Working in the hands of Damini. And look what happened...she fell for Kabir...and now they're both gone. This whole case has taught me one thing. People kill. It's not just their bodies that die, but their emotions, their trust, everything dies away. All it takes is one move of deceit to change the game. And in this job, I have more killers to find. They have other motives. Some I may never know. But maybe its just best that way. Kabir...you may have been a killer...but you proved one thing to me that day. Killers can be human as well.

Inspector Raina then went to her desk, taking out a document which she stamped with the words, 'CASE CLOSED.'
