but in the meantime
DRABBLE: camping honeymoon
"fun in the forest, he said" pragya grumbled as she stood under a tree. she pulled her thin shawl closer around her. it was not enough protection from the cold night air, but it was better than nothing.
abhi was struggling to pitch their tent. contrary to his claims of sufficient outdoorsy experience, he was actually clueless about what he was doing. on his previous trips he'd been with friends who'd taken care of things like tents, sleeping bags, and coolers full of food. all he'd had to do was be his obnoxious rockstar self and enjoy the wilderness.
not that pragya was observing anything enjoyable about the wilderness.
she'd always been a city girl, and she'd never understood the appeal of camping. abhi had sold her on this trip by emphasizing how romantic and memorable it would be to get away from everyone - they loved their family but life at mehra madhouse could get claustrophobic - and spend some quality time together. he'd spoken of cuddling under the stars and slow lovemaking in a cozy moonlit tent. she'd had visions of dawn-time visits to fresh clear streams, and long lazy conversations by a fire.
she had not counted on it being so damn cold, or there being mosquitoes, or them packing much less water than was needed, and nevermind about abhi's completely inadequate idea of travel food...!
finally abhi had the tent more or less up. he turned to her with an expectant smile, waiting for congratulations and praise. she just rolled her eyes and huffed past him, dragging her heavy bag into the tent with her.
"make sure you set up those animal precautions i researched!" she commanded, before zipping up the tent so she could change out of her hiking gear.
as she put on her long pajamas, she had to ask herself why she'd ever thought this trip could be remotely sexy. she should have realized when he'd ordered these clothes that this was not going to be her kind of honeymoon!
abhi came back to the tent soon after pragya was as settled as she could get in her newly purchased sleeping bag. he traded his clothes for something marginally more comfortable but not at all sexy and lay down in his own sleeping back beside her.
for a while they lay in silence. pragya was trying to sleep, ignoring her disappointment about the day and just focusing on how glad she was to finally be resting. she didn't know what abhi was up to, and since they'd argued before setting up the tent, she didn't feel like starting a conversation to find out.
gradually abhi shifted closer to her. finally he said, "chashmish...where's your chashma?"
pragya turned awkwardly in her sleeping bag until she was facing him. "on my face. is there anywhere in this tent to put it!'
abhi reached over and plucked her glasses off her face. he ignored her scowl as he carefully folded them and set them behind his head.
then he brought his hand to her face, slowly tracing one knuckle against her cheek. "chashmish, i'm sorry about today. i should have planned better."
pragya wanted to be sarcastic with him...but it had been a long day, and she was tired, and somehow with him this close to her, the tent was kind of cozy after all...and there was a little bit of moonlight too.
so she only said, "yes you should have."
"do you want to go back tomorrow?" he asked, and she could tell he was trying to sound like he wouldn't be disappointed, but he would be.
"maybe not..." she finally answered. "but you promised me fun in the forest, abhi. how are we gonna have any fun if we're this tired and cranky all the time?"
"well...if you sleep tonight, you won't be tired tomorrow...and since the tent is already set up, we can do anything we want during the day...there won't be anyone to watch...or hear..."
pragya's mind seized on the implications of this comment, and she started to imagine how tomorrow afternoon could be fun indeed...not romance under the stars or by moonlight, but...fun in the forest...yes, maybe they could manage that after all...
"okay...i'll be a good girl and sleep now...so that tomorrow i can be your bad girl when i'm not shivering in the cold...is that how it's going to be?"
"sounds about right..."
"then...goodnight abhi..."
"goodnight...bad girl"
pragya laughed and finally felt comfortable enough to sleep...and abhi too slept with a smile on his face, looking forward not to the morning but to the afternoon...
