Epilogue - "Mehereban Hua Rab!"
*"Dil ki maange thodi thi kam...Har duaa bhi thodi maddham... Tune kaandhe pe sar jhukaaya jab...Jaise dargah pe baandhe dhaage tab...Bina maange hi mill gaya hai sab... Meherbaan hua hua...Meherbaan hua Rab"
Seher and Rehan's Wedding Day - Seher's room - Wedding Morning
Seher woke up on the morning of her wedding day. She thought of all the events that had preceded and she could not help but smile. She had such a loving family and a fiancee that loved her so much. What more could a girl ask for on her wedding day?
Just then, she heard a knock on the door, and Sanam entered her room. She came in with two jewelry boxes in her hand.
"All set for the big day Behena?" she asked with a smile, as she sat down next to Seher on her bed.
"All set!" said Seher smiling back. "Api...what is this now? More jewelry?" she asked.
"Yes. This is for you to wear at the reception from your Jeej and I" said Sanam, placing one box in the middle, which Seher opened up. She gasped as she saw that it was a diamond necklace with a set of earrings and a bracelet. "Api...this is just fab!" said Seher. "And THIS" said Sanam "Is something that Badi Ammi had given Ammi to wear at her wedding", Sanam opened the other case and it had a set of bangles set with gems of many colours. "You can wear this with your Dulhan Ka Joda" she said as she placed it in front of Seher. Seher took the bangles from the case and touched them almost reverently. "Api...I can't believe I get to wear something Ammi wore at her wedding?" said Seher, her eyes filling with tears. "I wore them at my wedding with Anwar. That is why we didn't lose them the first time. I felt they gave me luck, because I was saved from marrying him. I also wore them when I got married to Aahil, coz I had those with me here in Bhopal, and I put them on before coming down for the wedding. Again, they gave me luck", said Sanam.
"Then I am sure, they will give ME luck too Api", said Seher as she took Sanam's hand and looked at her intently.
"Api...thank you so much for yesterday...I mean for organizing everyone to go to Bappa ki Mandir!"
"My pleasure baby. It was Rehan's idea, and I think he has shown how much he loves you Seher. I am SO happy you two put your differences aside and gave your relationship another chance? I mean if you hadn't, would we be celebrating your wedding in such a happy way? Look at how HAPPY everyone is? That is because you are happy! Everyone can tell how much in love you are!" said Sanam squeezing Seher's hand.
"Yes. I am in love, and I AM happy Api. But not just because of Rehan. I am happy that our whole family got a chance to get together and celebrate in this way, and that too in India, after ALL these years. That only happened because I decided to marry Rehan, and for that I am really glad. I felt like I gave the family a return gift, and they have already given me SO much!"
"Yes. It's been so great having everyone here. Aahil and I are having the best time! Did you like our dance?"
"It was a HIT! Everyone loved it even more than mine and Rehan's! But I am SO glad you guys did the dance Api. I mean, I know you guys didn't have a Sangeet and all..." Trailed off Seher.
"It's all good Seher. Aahil and I are fine with it, and we had the BEST time dancing at your Sangeet, it felt like it was ours! Can you believe that as of tonight, we are officially sisters in law, not just sisters?" Sanam said in an excited tone.
"Yeah...how many sisters end up becoming sisters in law?"
"Not many I would think? I still can't believe that you are going to get married and STAY here, not leave? Isn't that the best?"
"Yeah THE best! I know we had to spend our childhood apart, but now we get to compensate for that? How many people get that chance? We have so much to be thankful for Api!"
Seher reached out and hugged Sanam and as the sisters hugged, there was a knock on the door. The door opened and standing there was Humeira.
"Am I interrupting your sister time?" asked Humeira with a smile.
"Masi...Please come in" said Seher, as Sanam got up from Seher's bed, and Seher also got out of bed. Seher then noticed that Humeira was carrying a Velvet box as well.
"Masi...you and Haider Mamu have already given me jewellery for the wedding? WHY are you giving me more?" she asked with raised browse.
"THIS is not jewelry Seher. This is even more valuable than that" she said, as she opened the box, and took out what looked like a Golden Ball with a lot of filigree work on it. Both Sanam and Seher were looking at it, wondering what it was, when their aunt opened it up. Suddenly music started to resonate around the room, and they saw the couple dancing in the middle.
"It's so beautiful Masi" said Seher, and even Sanam was looking at it in awe.
"This was something your grandfather made for me. He made the same for your Mother as well. We both had one of these music boxes each. For years, this was the only thing your Mother had that was from our Father. It was very precious to her. I want you to have this one today" said Humeira, looking at Seher. Then she looked at Sanam. "Actually it's for you both. Now that you are both in this house together, you can share it between you" said Humeria smiling. "Think of it as your Nanaji's blessings on you both, and your new lives. Yours with Rehan, and yours with Aahil and your new baby" said Humeria, smiling at the girls. They both came forward and hugged her. They all felt very emotional at that moment.
"Thank you Masi" said Sanam and Seher in unison.
"You know...your Mother and I only got a very short time to be sisters. But I hope the two of you have many many years of happiness together". Just then, someone else came to the door. It was their uncle Haider. He came forward and hugged both Seher and Sanam.
"I can't tell you, how happy I am that my Chutki's daughters are together now. Not just together, but happier than ever! Meri chutki ki betiyaan itheni badi hogayi hain, and I remember HER when she was a little girl" said Haider with a reminiscent gleam in his eyes. "Your Mother was VERY special to me. So you girls are equally special to me now. Please remember, that no matter what, your Haider Mamu is always there for you. Anything you need in life, you just ask. Just one call, OK?" said Haider looking at the girls.
"Sure Mamu" said Seher, and Sanam also nodded and smiled.
"Now let's stop all this crying and hugging, and you get some rest princess. Pata nahin...apki shohar ne apko rest karne denge aaj ke baad?" said Haider with a wink.
"HAIDER...kuch toh sharam karo? Bacho ke saath bhi...?" Trailed off Humeira with a shake of her head, but she was smiling. "Look how you made Seher blush?" she said with a laugh, looking at Seher's red face.
"Brides SHOULD blush...Anyways...come on Humeira...Yeh meri Chutki ki ladakiyan hain...they can handle a joke!"
At that everyone laughed and each of them left the room as Seher waived them off. She sighed and looked around at the room that had been hers for nearly 3 months now. From tonight, she will be shifting into another room. Sanam and Aahil had insisted that she and Rehan move into a different room after they get married, and abandon their old rooms. After all, it's a fresh start. Sanam had got a decorator and got one of the rooms downstairs re-done for them, and it was all ready and waiting to be "their" room from tonight. She realised that tonight was her "Suhaag Raat!" Seher placed her palms on her face! "OMG" she said out loud. "I am getting MARRIED in a few hours!"
Few Hours Later - In the Garden - Ibrahim Mansion
Finally the moment was here. Everyone was ready. Seher had been dressed with the help of her aunts and cousins. A professional hairdresser and makeup artist had been called to do her hair and makeup. Once everything was done, she was escorted down by all her female relatives into the Garden where the Nikah mandap was set up. As she approached the venue, through her Ghoonghat, she could see all the males of her family standing behind Rehan on the other side of the veil.
Seher was wearing a pink and gold Lehenga, and Rehan was in a Gold Sherwani with a Magenta coloured dupatta with gold work on it. Seher was wearing a set that belonged to her Badi Ammi and under it she wore her Ammi's locket with baby pictures of both her and Sanam around her neck, and the bangles Sanam had given her. Wearing those pieces of jewelry, she felt like her Mother was there with her. Both Rehan and Seher looked a million bucks, and the whole family gasped in admiration as they saw Seher walk down the steps to the Nikah mandap. Soon they were seated and the Quazi Sahaab came to Seher to ask for her consent.
"Seher Ahemed Khan, binth marhum Asad Ahemed Khan, Aapka Nikah, Rehan Qureshi, wald marhum Imraan Qureshi ke saath thain hain..kya aapko yeh nikah qubool hai?"
"Qubool Hai" said Seher. He asked her again, twice, "Kya Aapko yeh nikah qubool hai?" "Qubool Hai" she said two more times as she sat on her side of the screen and looked at Rehan, smiling from behind her veil. Then the Quazi saahab moved to Rehan's side.
"Rehan Qureshi, wald marhum Imraan Qureshi, Aapka Nikah Seher Ahemed Khan, binth marhum Asad Ahemed Khan ke saath thain hain..kya aapko yeh nikah qubool hai?"
"Qubool Hai...Qubool Hai...Qubool Hai" said Rehan, three times as the Quazi asked him for the third time if he accepts Seher as his wife. Rehan was smiling at Seher through his Sehera. Everyone started to cheer and clap, as the Quazi sahaab announced. "Mubarak Ho!"
Everyone came forward and started to hug Rehan and Seher, as they wished them.
"Congrats Bro" said Aahil, as he hugged Rehan. "I am so happy for you!". "Thank you Aahil Bhai" said Rehan hugging him back.
"Seher" said Sanam, hugging her sister. "I can't tell you how excited I am that you are married now! Mubarak ho behena!". "Thank you Api. Love you" said Seher as she hugged her sister back. "Love you too!" Sanam said, giving Seher a squeeze.
Then the screen was taken away, and Seher and Rehan saw each other for the first time as husband and wife. It was the best moment of their lives and they both just stood there looking at each other. Soon they stepped forward towards each other.
"Mr Qureshi" whispered Seher, as Rehan took her hand.
"Mrs Qureshi" he whispered back.
All their relations came to wish them, and they were also wishing each other.
"Mubarak ho Ayaan" said Haider to Ayaan.
"Aapko bhi Haider" said Ayaan, as he turned to Aahil who had come to stand next to him. "Mubaraq ho Aahil miya" "Aapko bhi Ayaan Chachu" said Aahil as they hugged. Then Ayaan wished Rehan.
"Mubarak ho Rehan miya". "Aap ko bhi" said Rehan with his usual reserve.
"Damaad ke thor par, humari gale toh lag jaiye" said Ayaan, as he moved forward and hugged Rehan. "Humare beti ka hayal rakna Rehan" whispered Ayaan to him as they hugged.
"Main aapko wada kartha hu ke... meri wajan se kabhi bhi seher ko koi taqleef nahin hogi! Main apki beti se bohot mohobaat karta hu!" said Rehan earnestly.
"Shukriya Rehan, ek baap ko aur kya chaiyye?" said Ayaan as he stepped away from Rehan. He felt that HE was now Seher and Sanam's father, because after all their father had been like a second father to him. He had not been able to do anything for them when his brother died, but now they were back in his life, he was going to do all that he can. In the past 3 years, he had pretty much been Seher's Father, so he felt responsible for her. But he could tell Rehan sincerely loved Seher, just like Aahil sincerely loved Sanam. They had lucked out finding men that loved their daughters. "Welcome to the family son!" said Ayaan with a smile.
"Shukriya Chacha Ji" said Rehan returning his smile.
"Seher...my girl" said Ayaan, as he went forward and hugged Seher. "Chachu" said Seher, as she hugged him back. "Be Happy! And if you EVER need anything, you call me!" he whispered to her. "Your Father way always there for me, through everything. It's the least I can do for my Bhaijaan!". "Love you Chachu!" said Seher emotionally. "Love you too Beta!"
The rest of the evening was a blur. Everyone had an amazing time with lots of food, music and dancing. Since it was family and close friends only, everyone was letting their hair down. They only took a few official photos to send to the media, but that was it.
Finally the moment was here...and the ladies took Seher upstairs and set her up in the room that she and Rehan were going to be occupying. Seher gasped as she saw the inside of the room. It was decorated with flowers and lights and candles. The bed was covered in a Maroon silk cover. It all looked breath-taking.
Seher was made to sit in the middle of the bed by her Badi Ammi and aunts and she dutifully sat there like a traditional bride. They all hugged her and wished her a Happy married life and left. Only Badi Ammi lingered and gave her another hug as she whispered to her.
"Be Happy my love. Always! Allah aapko har khushi dain" Dilshaad made a heartfelt wish as she left her granddaughter in her room for her wedding night, silently praying to Allah to make sure her child was always happy in her married life!
As Seher sat on the middle of the bed, she couldn't believe that she was doing this cliched thing. But then her whole wedding had been like a Karan Johar movie. So why not this part too? Soon after, Rehan joined her as he was pushed into the room traditional style by the ladies of the house.
"Good Luck Bhaijaan" Seher heard Haya's voice say, as she heard the other ladies laughing. She heard Sanam say "Yes you will need it with MY sister Rehan! Bechara!".
"I'll get you later Api" thought Seher with a smile.
Rehan entered the room as he was pushed in. He balanced himself on his feet and looked across the room at the adorned bed, and on it sad his adorned bride. Rehan felt like his breath stopped for a minute as he looked at Seher sitting on the bed looking ethereal. He didn't think he had ever seen her sit so still? Just as he thought this, Seher stood up on the bed, and parting the flower garlands, stepped off the bed. Rehan just started at her flabbergasted. She went to stand next to Rehan and looked at him and raised her eyebrows.
"Bohot khoobsoorat lag rahi hu kya?" she asked with a twist of her lips.
"Ha?" said Rehan a bit dazed.
"You're staring at me! Am I looking Hot, SIR?" asked Seher with a sexy bat of her eyelashes. At that it seemed that Rehan came out of his dazed state.
"Koi Shaq?" he said with a smile, as he came forward and pulled her into his arms. Rehan bent his head towards Seher's lips when she placed her fingers on them.
"Not so fast Mr Qureshi!" she said. "What sort of groom are you? You haven't even told me how beautiful, hot and sexy I look! Start praising me now, or you can't touch this!" said Seher with a giggle, indicating herself.
"Is that so?" said Rehan with a raise of his browse, as Seher lifted her fingers away from his lips.
"Koi Shaq?" raising her own browse.
"You look totally beautiful, hot and sexy Mrs Rehan Qureshi!" said Rehan dutifully. Then his tone changed as he gazed at Seher for a moment. "Seriously Seher...you look so beautiful today, I have no words to describe how amazing you look. When I first saw you walking towards me before the wedding, I was awestruck. I still can't believe that we are married! That you actually belong to ME!" said Rehan, his voice full of awe and his eyes full of passion.
"And I can't believe YOU belong to me Rehan! You don't look too bad yourself" said Seher with a small smile. "But in all seriousness, even I feel totally overwhelmed right now. I can't believe that after all these years, we are standing where we are now, and we are married! Not just married, but married with the blessings of ALL our family! I feel so lucky!"
"Me too! I feel like the luckiest guy on earth right now!" said Rehan as he bent his head and captured her lips in a quick kiss. Soon the kiss started to turn passionate as Seher put her arms around Rehan's neck and pressed herself close to him. Even his arms tightened around her waist, as he pulled her flush against him. His hands seemed to be everywhere at once and they finally moved their lips away from each other as they started to run out of breath.
"I think it's time we got lucky, don't you think Mr Qureshi?" said Seher in a breathless voice, as she looked up at Rehan from under her hooded eyelashes.
"Are you trying to seduce me Mrs Qureshi?"
"Koi Shaq?" said Seher with a bat of her eyelashes. Rehan gave a soft laugh.
"I love you Seher Rehan Qureshi" said Rehan as he bent down and lifted Seher up in his arms.
"Me too!" said Seher as she wound her arms around Rehan's neck.
"Do you love Me? Or yourself?" asked Rehan with a chuckle.
"I love me, but I love you more" whispered Seher.
"Lucky me!" said Rehan as he bent his head to capture Seher's lips, as he carried her over to the beautifully decorated bed. Rehan placed Seher on the bed, and started to help her take off her heavy jewellery. As the jewels came off, Seher's breathing started to increase. After all her jewelry was taken off, Rehan was sitting next to her and staring at her like he had seen her for the first time. Suddenly she felt very shy and she launched herself at Rehan, her arms going around his neck and her face hidden against his neck.
"I can't believe this? My Seher is SHY?" said Rehan with a smile in his voice.
"Yeah so? I can be shy too? Said Seher indignantly, moving her face away from his neck and looking up at Rehan. "Yaha main achi dulhan banne khi koshish kar rahi ho, aur Aap hain ke...?" Seher trailed off.
"AAP?" said Rehan with a soft laugh, his browse raising.
"Yeah...well...Badi Ammi told me I need to call you "Aap" now, coz you're my husband" Seher said with a pout.
"Aap bohot cute ho Seher" said Rehan huskily, looking into her eyes with so much love that Seher felt herself blush.
"I love you Rehan" she whispered as she hid her face against him again.
"Me too!"
"Do you love me, or yourself?" asked Seher, the same way Rehan had asked her.
"I love me, but I love you more!" he responded.
"Lucky me!" Seher whispered as Rehan bent his head to capture her lips in a kiss. As they continued to kiss, Rehan lowered Seher on to the bed, and soon all conversation seized.
Needless to say, that night, both Mr and Mrs Qureshi got lucky!
The Next Day - Rehan & Seher's Room
Seher woke up feeling almost euphoric. She looked to her side and saw that Rehan was not in bed. Then she heard the shower running, and realised he must be in the bathroom. She had woken up quite early in the morning and had a shower and gone back to sleep, as Rehan continued to sleep peacefully. She had not had the heart to wake him. "He deserved a good rest after all his exertions the night before!", thought Seher with a naughty smile as she had put on a nightie and slipped back into bed to sleep. She still could not believe that last night had been her wedding night. It had been the most perfect night, and Rehan had been the perfect groom and the most perfect lover. Seher blushed as she remembered how they had made love three times last night. She could not have asked for a better wedding night. Now as she looked around the beautiful room filled with flowers, she felt luckier than she ever had in her life.
Flowers had been arriving since the functions for the wedding started. Most of them were placed in the hall and some had been distributed around the house. All the new one's that arrived on the day of the wedding were sent straight to Rehan and Seher's room. One of the bouquets that had arrived last evening had been addressed to Mr & Mrs Rehan Imran Qureshi. They were from Sonia. The message read.
"Congratulations, Rehan and Seher. I'm sorry I was not able to be there for your big day. I am in Mayalsia attending a cousin's wedding. Please accept my sincere wishes on your marriage. Your love story has proven yet again the truth of the saying "Love conquers all!" Best wishes, Sonia"
Seher had felt warmed by her wishes and even Rehan had smiled and said that he hopes Sonia finds someone who deserves her.
Seher got out of bed and walked over to the flower arrangement placed on the table between the armchairs placed in the corner of the room. It was from the Alpha Project team at work. Everyone in the team had singed the card and you could see that Shalini's signature was scrawled on it as well, with the line "All the best!" Somehow it didn't seem as sincere as the wishes of the others who had signed the card. Seher laughed as she looked at it.
Then she heard the bathroom door open and Rehan walked out in a pair of track pants without a shirt, his hair was wet and he just looked fresh and hot, thought Seher. Seher just stared at her husband for a moment, totally losing her train of thought for a second.
"You stare like you've never seen me before?" said Rehan with a grin.
"Maybe I like what I see?" said Seher with a naughty smile. Rehan came towards her and saw that she was holding a card.
"Who are those from?" he asked indicating the flowers that were on the table.
"Alpha Team! Everyone has signed it!" said Seher waving the card. "Even Shalini! I bet you're bimbette's hand was shaking when she signed the card!" said Seher with a twist of her lips.
"Be nice sweetheart!" Said Rehan with a shake of his head, as he put his arms around her waist and looked at the card more closely over her shoulder.
"That's the problem with you, Rehan Sir...you're too nice!" said Seher smiling and leaning into him.
"Just as well I have a naughty wife then!" said Rehan whispered in Seher's ear.
"Cheeky" said Seher as she giggled and turned around in his arms. "I forgot that my nice husband has a naughty side too!"
"Let me remind you then" said Rehan as he bent his head to kiss her. Goes without saying, they didn't have a coherent conversation for quite a long while after that!
Reception - The next day - Location "The Crescent" (The biggest Hotel owned by Ibrahim Holdings in Bhopal).
The night of the Grand reception was here for Seher and Rehan's wedding, hosted by the Nawab and Begum of Bhopal. Every who's who from all over India was there, and all their family was still in town too. Most were planning to leave two days after the reception. They had all joked they would need at least two days to come down from the celebrations and recover.
Everyone had a great time at the party and her family were catching up with acquaintances they had lost touch with years ago after moving overseas. When the time came for the dance floor to open for the night, Seher and Rehan had done the honours with their first dance. When they had been discussing which song to choose, both Seher and Rehan had been unanimous in their choice.
If people had been surprised at their song choice, no one said anything. Especially since it didn't seem like an obvious choice. But Rehan, Seher and a few others knew the significance of the song "Dil Kyon Yeh Mera Shor Karain" to the couple. That was the song that had literally changed the course of events between them. Seher took Rehan's hand and moved to the dance floor. As the song started to play, and she and Rehan took their steps, she thought of how just over 2 months ago, she had danced to the same song, with another man. How things have changed since that night. She glanced over Rehan's shoulder for a moment, and her eyes met those of Zain's who was standing nearby with Ishaan. He gave her a smile and thumbs up, as if to say "You did the right thing!" she smiled back. Yes she most certainly did. As their song ended and Rehan dipped Seher to the floor after their final twirl, they looked into each other's eyes and smiled. Just then, Ishaan clicked a photo, which he later gave them as a wedding gift. Immortalising a perfect moment for good.
In the days following everyone had gone back to their respective homes and there had been many tearful goodbyes. But all the family had asked Rehan and Seher to visit London and Dubai, and they were planning on doing a trip the following year. For their honeymoon, they went to Mauritius, as both wanted to visit a place they had not been, and Seher wanted to swim. So they could not think of a better place than a tropical location. Those two weeks had been some of the best moments of Seher's life and she had to keep pinching herself to see if this was not all a dream!
4 months Later - Ibrahim Mansion - Sanam and Aahil's Room
"OMG Api...he is TOO cute!" said Seher as she looked at her little nephew who was sleeping in his cot so peacefully, totally oblivious to the world. "Only babies can sleep like that!" Thought Seher.
Asad Aahil Raza Ibrahim had been born 8lbs and 4 oz's exactly 3 weeks ago. He was already acting like the Chote Nawab, keeping everyone up at night with his crying. Seher had taken leave the day after he was born to help her sister with the baby. She was finally going back to work today, now that the baby had sort of fallen into a routine. Badi Ammi was staying with them now, and even Haya was spending a lot of time at Ibrahim Mansion to help with the baby. Her little Najma spent most of the day playing around the house, or gaping at her new cousin.
Of course Aahil and Sanam were thrilled with the baby. Aahil had taken time off work to be home with Sanam and the baby. He was acting totally besotted with his new son. Almost hovering over him constantly. So much so, that after the first week of the baby being born, Sanam had told Aahil to start going back to work, or he will drive her crazy. He had flatly refused and said he will work from home. So he spent part of the day in his home office, and the rest of the time fussing over Asad and Sanam. Both Rehan and Seher found his behaviour equally endearing and amusing. Sanam sometimes got frustrated with him, but she had told Seher that she could not imagine having a baby with anyone but Aahil, and that he was the best Dad she could ever hope for, for her child.
Seher had come to give her nephew a kiss before heading off to work. She bent down and pressed a kiss on the sleeping baby's forehead.
"Bye my little Jaan, Maasi has to work today. But I will be back in a few hours and we will play, OK?" whispered Seher to little baby Asad. The baby grizzled a bit in his sleep, almost as if to agree with his aunt. Seher smiled. After setting eyes on Asad for the first time, she had understood the true meaning of "Love at first sight!" because she had fallen in love with him instantly. She could not imagine loving him more if she herself had given birth to him.
"Api...you're sure you're OK without me?" she asked her sister.
"Of course Seher. Go back to work, and please spend a bit more time with Rehan now! It's like all you do is fuss over Asad all day. I think he is feeling neglected?" said Sanam with an indulgent smile at her sister.
"Rehan is a big boy Api, he can handle it!" said Seher with a laugh.
"Boys are never BIG Seher, they just LOOK Big!" said Sanam rolling her eyes.
"True that sister!" said Seher as both sisters laughed at their joke. It was true they adored their husbands. But they could both be babies. But they both new, they would never be happy married to anyone else. The best part was, not only did they both have guys they loved, but they always had each other. That was the icing on the cake. Seher gave her sister a quick peck on the cheek and a hug and left the room. She made her way down the steps to the hall, and saw that Rehan was waiting for her so they can drive to work together.
"Said goodbye to your favorite guy?" asked Rehan with a smirk.
"Yup, and now I want to spend some time with my other favorite guy!" said Seher as she came over to Rehan and linked her arm through his. Rehan smiled as they turned to leave the house. They walked together and got into Rehan's SUV parked in front of the house. Rehan started to drive and they soon fell into a comfortable conversation about work, as Rehan filled Seher in about what had been happening for the past few weeks. She had been so busy helping out with the baby, they had barely discussed work even when Rehan was home at night.
"I bet Shalini loved having you all to herself?" said Seher with a side glance at Rehan.
"You know she has a boyfriend now?" said Rehan with a raise of his browse.
"OMG is it a guy from work?"
"Yup! Ramesh from accounting!" said Rehan with a smile.
"Poor Ramesh!" said Seher with a giggle. "Ek Chutki Sindoor Ki Keemat, Tum Kya Jano Ramesh Babu?" said Seher in a full on filmy style. Rehan started to laugh.
"Your being mean sweetheart" said Rehan, giving Seher an ironic look.
"Ok Ok...I will be nice to Shalini. Especially now that the Alpha project is almost over. I can't believe the launch is in 3 weeks? This is going to be full on!"
"Yes it is!" said Rehan with a sigh. Even thinking about it made him feel exhausted. But one thing that always lifted his spirits was his beautiful wife, and her beautiful smile. Not to mention her lively presence. There was not a bored moment with Seher, and he loved that. He never knew what she would do next? He couldn't believe his luck that Seher was in his life again, and not just in his life, but married to him.
Sometimes he couldn't believe this vibrant and beautiful women was HIS wife? He felt like the luckiest guy on earth. The past 6 months had been the happiest of his life. The lead up to the wedding, and then getting married and now with the birth of their nephew Asad, it seemed like their family was complete and so was their happiness. He had the best wife, the best brother and sister in law, the best sister, little niece and now the most adorable little nephew. For someone who had spent the first years of his life thinking he was an orphan, he could never take for granted all the amazing relationships he now had in his life. What a far cry his life was now, to the barren wasteland it had been 4 years ago, when his Mother's truth had robbed him of the relationships he most cherished in his life! But now he had them all back, and he could not ask for more in life. Maybe one day, he and Seher would be blessed with a child too. That was the only thing that Rehan could imagine that could make an almost perfect life, fully complete!
"Penny for your thoughts Mr Qureshi?" said Seher with a click of her fingers. "What are you thinking of so hard? Don't stress about the launch babe. I am sure we can get everything done on time?" said Seher.
"No, I was not thinking of the launch. Actually I was thinking of us, Aahil Bhai, Sanam, Haya.. Of all of us, our lives. You know...I can't believe how perfect it all has turned out? Could you?" asked Rehan in a serious tone.
"No. Even I sometimes pinch myself to think it all turned out so perfect. We truly are lucky Rehan" said Seher with a sigh. Then suddenly she heard the song on the radio. It was one of her favourites.
"Turn that up Rehan. I love that song" said Seher. Rehan reached over to the radio and turned it up. As he did, he too heard what the song was.
**"Yeh Dooriyan...In Raahon Ki Dooriyan...Nigahon Ki Dooriyan...Hum Rahon Ki Dooriyan...Fanah Ho Sabhi Dooriyan..."
Their eyes met as the song filled the space between them in the car. They both remembered a night nearly 8 months ago now, when they had been travelling together and listening to this same song. How things had changed since then. That night they had not been able to listen to this song without becoming distressed by the lyrics. The song had filled the void between them and opened up a chasm that was filled with pain and recriminations. But today it was the opposite. Today there was no distance between them at all. No pain, no recriminations. Only love.
Rehan and Seher smiled at each other. Yeh Dooriyan Mithgayi...Hamesha ke liye!
*"Duaa rang rangiya yun malang laal laal rang...Rooh ki patang baandhi tere sang...Tab hi toh laga...Meherban hua Rab...O din ye sehre sa saja...Meherbaan huaa Rab...Humko lagta hai kuch dino se ab...Tu ibaadat hai, tu hi hai mazhab...Bewajah kaise, kyu, kahaan aur kab... Meherbaan hua hua...Meherbaan hua Rab"
The End
