Chapter 35 - Nothing to Lose

Preet was looking through an album for some pictures of Meher. There were some taken when they had gone site seeing in Mumbai, others taken with Sam and Gaurav at the office party, and then those taken at Veera's wedding and their own engagement. All were memories of the time they had spent together. Who would have thought they would come in handy some day, when he filed a missing person's report for her?
Preet quietly selected some pictures and readied himself to leave for the police station. He was almost at the door when his phone rang. To his surprise, the caller was Meher. He answered it immediately.
"Meher?" he said.
"No...not Meher...it's me", replied Viren.
"I knew it. I knew you'd taken her!" said Preet.
"Smart boy", laughed Viren. "Did you figure that one out all by yourself?"
"Where is Meher? Let me speak to her, right now!" cried Preet.
"Oh ho! Listen to the big man...making his demands on me", Viren chided him. "You know I don't take too kindly to that sort of attitude. What if I don't want to let you talk to her? I mean, you don't always get what you want in life, do you Preet? I sure as hell didn't, which by the way, is all your fault".
"Damn you Viren!" yelled Preet. "Do you have any idea how much hot water you're in? The police are looking for you and so am I. You better pray that the police finds you first, because if I get my hands on you, I'm going to crack open your skull and let that sadistic, twisted little brain of yours ooze out and feed it to the dogs!"
"See...now you're being just plain rude", said Viren.
"You're pathetic Viren", continued Preet. "You killed your step father because he recognized you for what you really were and tried to help you change for the better. And now, you've taken away an innocent girl who's never harmed anyone. For what? Money and your own personal greed?!"
"How do you you know she didn't come with me of her own free will?" asked Viren. "I can be quite a charmer when I want to be".
"Because Meher hates you. She would never go with you of her own free will. Never", said Preet. His voice was ice.
"You think?" said Viren.
"Always", replied Preet. "You should try it some time...that is...when you're not otherwise preoccupied with ruining peoples' lives. You're despicable Viren. You're nothing but a despicable coward, a kidnapper and a murderer!"
"What are you my judge and jury?" said Viren, getting angry. "You're not going to make me feel guilty Preet, and you are certainly not going to pass judgement on me. You may think you're better than me, but you're not. In fact, we're more similar than you'd like to admit. We both come from rich families. Both of our lives got screwed up by our fathers. Heck, we both even happen to fancy the same girl. All I'm asking for now is a fresh start. Just like you got when you came to Mumbai?"
"I'm nothing like you!" said Preet. "I tried my best to make my father proud of me. I did everything I could never to disappoint him. My greatest wish was to see delight on his face when he talked about me to someone. I loved him and I love Meher! You...you don't give a damn about anyone!"
"Oh...I suppose you're right", sighed Viren. "I learned long ago that I couldn't make everyone happy all the time, so I just worry about making myself happy. Anyway...enough with the small talk. Let's get down to business. I have a bone to pick with you Preet. I do a simple thing like having Meher picked up and brought to me and you go running like a cry baby to the police...not fair! What happened to the good old days when things could be settled between men?"
"Fine", said Preet gritting his teeth. "Why don't you tell me where you are right now? We can definitely settle things like men".
"Well, right now I happen to be standing over a very fine looking young lady", Viren said smugly.
"Damn it Viren! Let me talk to Meher!" said Preet.
Viren only laughed in response.
"I said let me talk to her!" cried Preet.
Viren thought for a minute, then spoke up again. "Alright. But only for a minute. If you think she can tell you anything...you're mistaken. She has no idea where she is. And her phone...after this call...it'll be trashed, so don't waste your time trying to find us. I mean, you don't think I'm that stupid do you?"
"Give the phone to Meher!" demanded Preet.
There was a brief pause, then Meher came on. She was sobbing uncontrollably. "Preet...Preet..." She was trying to talk...to tell him something, but wound up gasping for air instead, fighting more sobs.
"Meher! Are you okay?" asked Preet. "Why are you crying? Are you hurt? Where are you? Just give me an idea...anything at all".
"Preet...Viren...he...", sobbed Meher. "...the pandit...fire..."
There was a brief pause and for a moment Preet thought the connection had been lost, but then there was the sound of hysterical laughter in the background. It was beyond evil. Preet stood there with his phone glued to his ear for what seemed like an eternity, feeling a mixture of rage and depression.
"Sorry pretty boy, but your time's up", chuckled Viren.
Preet could still hear Meher crying in the background. "You're a total bas***d you know that! Just wait until I get my hands on you! I'll rip you to pieces!" he cried.
"Hmm...I suppose next you're going to tell me that we can be friends, aren't you?" chuckled Viren. "Look...I understand your concern for Meher, so let me tell you what I can. She rested well last night. She's safe and unharmed and she can stay that way if you do as I say. Although I have to tell you...she has been giving me one hell of a hard time, constantly pushing me towards the edge of my patience. It's taking almost all of me to keep myself from...punishing her".
"Viren! If you hurt her...If you even touch her...I swear I'll kill you...slowly and with my bare hands!" Preet yelled angrily.
"You think this is some God damn game Preet?!" Viren shot back. "Fine...then let's play. My rules. I'm the boss. I could kill Meher right now. Or...I could hurt her a lot and then kill her. And what could you do about it? Nothing! Nothing at all! Now if you're smart, that scares you, and you'll agree to do exactly as I say".
Preet took a deep breath and tried to calm himself down. "Okay look...", he began slowly. "I know you have Meher. I know you can hurt her. I'm just asking you not to do so. I'll give you whatever you ask. Do whatever you want...just...don't hurt her".
"That's better", smiled Viren. "I knew we could come to terms. Let's see...where should I begin? Ha! I almost feel like a kid in a candy store".
"What do you want me to do?" repeated Preet, as calmly as he could.
"Call off the police", said Viren. "Take back whatever complaint you've filed. Tell them there's been some mistake, and Meher wasn't kidnapped after all. She left of her own free will".
"And how do you expect me to make them believe that?" said Preet.
"That's your headache not mine", sneered Viren. "This is between you and me...so no police. Call them off or she's dead. Understand? If I get word that the police is looking for me...you will be responsible for whatever happens to Meher".
"What else?" asked Preet.
"Stay away from Mr. Bedi", said Viren. "He should never find out you and Meher were ever anything more than friends. Oh yeah and...one last thing...forget about Meher".
"What?" cried Preet.
"You heard me...forget about Meher", Viren said flatly.
"You know I can't do that! I love her! She's my wife!" cried Preet.
"You won't ever be able to prove that to anyone Preet", said Viren. "I made sure of that".
"What are you talking about?" said Preet. Nothing Viren was saying made sense to him.
"In any case, possession is nine-tenths of the law...isn't it?" continued Viren. "And I'm the one who has Meher. Looks like you're out of luck".
"Why you...!" said Preet.
"I'm making a deal with you for her safety not her freedom", interrupted Viren. "If you really love her, you'll do anything to keep her safe...and that includes letting her go. I'll let you in on a little secret Preet...we're getting married. We're getting married and then leaving this God forsaken place. But I'd hate the notion of some guy out there somewhere pining away for my wife".
"You're crazy Viren!" said Preet. "The police are already looking for you, and it's only a matter of time before they find you. You can make things alot easier for yourself by turning yourself in".
"Easier? Give me a break!" scoffed Viren.
"Look...if you need money, I can help you", tried Preet.
"Can you hand over all of the Junejas holdings to me? Nahin na? You can't even begin to imagine the extent of help I need Preet", said Viren.
"Is that your need or greed talking now?" asked Preet.
"Whatever. In anycase, you think I trust you? Forget it!" cried Viren. "I don't need your help. I only need Meher. But I'm warning you...if the police comes...even thinks of coming...she's toast. If I go down, I'm taking her with me. I've got nothing more to loose Preet...but you..."
"But...", tried Preet.
"Oh and don't bother playing the hero bit and come looking for us either", laughed Viren. "You'll never find us. Not in a million years. I'll be in the last place you'll ever look".
The phone disconnected. Preet called back immediately, but no one answered his call. He hung up then tried again. Again no answer. Damn! What was he going to do now? Just then his phone rang. Preet answered it immediately. It was Gaurav.
"Hey Preet", said Gaurav. "Sam and I are outside your door. You want to tell your bodyguards to let us in please".
"Sorry Gaurav", sighed Preet. "I'll be right there".
Minutes later Sam and Gaurav entered Preet's apartment.
"We just wanted to check in on you", explained Sam. "Gaurav said Mr. Bakshi sent you home".
"Yeah...I guess he thought I was a liability", Preet said offering his friends a weak smile.
"Well I thought that was really insensitive of him", said Sam. "Um...Did the police get any word on Meher?"
Preet shook his head.
"Well...You filed the missing persons report today didn't you?" asked Gaurav.
"No", said Preet. "And I'm not going to".
"Why not?!" asked Sam.
"I just got off the phone...with Viren", said Preet.
"You what?!" Gaurav and Sam in unison.
"I was right. He has Meher. He let me speak to her for about 30 seconds", said Preet. He passed his hand through his hair in frustration. "Look guys...I have to go. I have to find her".
Gaurav put his hand on Preet's shoulder. "Preet wait!" he said. "We're all concerned about Meher, but you can't just go out there blindly searching for her. We know Viren is dangerous. God knows what he's capable of? If you have the slightest inkling of where Meher is we should call the police right away and get them involved".
"No! We can't call the police", said Preet.
"Why not?" asked Gaurav.
"Because he threatened to hurt Meher if I did!" cried Preet. "I just can't let that happen. He has the advantage. He has Meher, and I have no idea where he is. I can't afford to do anything that will tick him off right now. In fact, I have to make sure the police drops the case altogether, that's the first of his stupid demands".
"How? You've already filed a complaint. On top of that, Inspector Khan knows you and is handling the case personally" asked Sam.
"Inspector Khan wasn't doing much anyway", sighed Preet. "Maybe if I don't file the missing person report, or pursue the matter any further with them, the police will let it slide to the back burner and forget about it".
"What else did he want?" asked Gaurav.
"For me to forget about Meher", relied Preet.
"What?!" cried Sam.
"He made it very clear that he was a making a deal for her safety, and nothing else", said Preet.
"I thought Viren needed Meher to get his inheritance", said Sam. "He wouldn't hurt her would he?"
"He will if the police comes after him, or if he feels trapped", said Preet. "He won't think twice about sacrificing Meher in order to save himself".
"Well...we're obviously dealing with a lunatic", sighed Gaurav. "But what about Meher?"
"I'll have to find her myself...before it's too late", said Preet.
"Too late?" asked Gaurav.
"Viren said something really strange to me", explained Preet. "He said he and Meher were going to leave this place. That they were going to get married".
"Married?" cried Sam. "But you 2 are already..."
"I know. But he refused to accept that", said Preet. "And I don't know if by leaving he meant the city, country, or what. All I know if that if I don't do something fast I'll lose Meher forever".
"What do you have in mind?" asked Gaurav.
"Viren was living with an uncle here in Mumbai", said Preet. "The police tried to question him but nothing materialized. And they didn't have enough evidence to get a search warrant for his place. I was thinking...maybe I could go and talk to him".
"Good idea", said Gaurav. "I'll go with you. Sam, you wait here until we return".
A short while later...
Veer Singh was shutting down his small electronics repair shop an hour earlier today. As if it wasn't bad enough that business was slow, the police had stopped by again to question him. That had made even his regular customers wary of his shop. Akhir aisa kya kar diya hai Viren ne iss bar (Just what had Viren done this time)? He wondered, shaking his head in disappointment. His affection for his sister had led him to help his nephew once, but it had turned out to be more than he had bargained for. He wouldn't repeat this mistake twice. Hoping tomorrow things would go back to normal, Mr. Singh pulled the shutter down and turned the key in the lock, before slipping it into his pocket. It was then that he noticed 4 men walking towards him. Two of them were burly and muscular looking. Great! Sighed Mr. Singh. Must be more of Viren's creditors. I had better make a run for it before they force me to open up my shop and tear up the place.
"That must be Viren's uncle", Preet motioned to Gaurav.
To their surprise, the older man bolted up the stairs on one side of the shop. Both Gaurav and Preet ran after him to his living quarters.
"Mr. Singh!" said Preet, as he pounded on the door. "I know you're in there Mr. Singh. Please...open up".
"Go away!" Mr. Singh cried from behind the door. "If you're more of Viren's creditors...he's not here. And I don't have any money! And...and...if you try to damage my shop again I'll call the police".
"We don't want any money from you sir", said Preet. "But we are looking for Viren. There are charges against him and he could be in a lot of trouble if he doesn't turn himself in. Look...I just want to talk to you, and I'm not leaving until I do. I don't care if I have to stand here all night".
"Or we could just ask our friends here to break down the door", Gaurav suggested, glancing over at the bodyguards.
There was a moment silence before Veer Singh reluctantly unlocked his door and opened it slightly.
"I don't want any trouble, you hear me", he said. "I'll tell you what I told the police. I don't know where Viren is or what he's up to. I'm not a party to anything he's doing either. I only took him in because he is my sister's son, and that's it. Business is bad enough as it is. I don't need the police to be roaming around here and scaring what little customers come by".
He tried to close the door again, but Preet blocked him. "Sir please...you have to help me. My wife is missing, and Viren is responsible. He called me earlier today and confirmed it".
"A real kidnapping?" Mr Singh said in surprise. "You mean it's not a joke?"
"What are you talking about Mr. Singh?" asked Gaurav. "Have you been withholding information from the police?"
"No...I mean...well...", Mr. Singh began slowly. "I overheard Viren talking to someone on the phone once about some girl...and...how he wanted to teach her a lesson. But when I asked him what he was up to, he assured me it was just a prank he was planning to play on an old friend. He said she was responsible for alot of his problems and he just wanted to scare her to get back at her. He said not to listen to anyone who may come by and tell me anything else. He said it would be the best joke ever".
Doing his best to control his anger Preet took a deep breath and spoke in a cold terse voice. "My wife's life is in danger! Do I look like I'm laughing?! Let me be up front with you Mr. Singh. Viren is in a lot of trouble. One way or the other...whether you help us or not...he will be caught, and then...he'll be charged with murder and kidnapping and be put away for a very very long time. I don't know where Viren took Meher. But if he hurts her in anyway, you'll be charged as an accessory to all his crimes, and spend the next few years in jail. I will personally see to it. If on the other hand you tell us what you know I will make sure the appropriate authorities know about your cooperation.
So here's the deal. You can tell us what you know now, and maybe it'll help us in rescuing Meher. Or you can wait until the police books you and you're looking for a lawyer instead of running your precious business. It's your choice".
"But I already told you all I know, I swear", said Mr. Singh.
"What about his room or belongings?" asked Preet. "You have to let us go through them and look for clues...please",
Veer Singh nodded and motioned for Preet and Gaurav to follow him inside and down a hall. "This is his room", he said. "Feel free to go through it and find whatever you think will help".
"Mr Singh, are you sure Viren didn't say anything like where he was going to play this prank of his?" Asked Gaurav as he and Preet began searching through Viren's room.
"No", replied Mr. Singh. "Last I know he was on his way to Delhi to get his inheritance back. When he didn't return, I just assumed his luck had changed for the better and he had moved on. Viren has done alot of things in his life, but I never would have imagined him kidnapping anyone, let alone someone elses wife. Things must not have worked out for him after all. You must be from a rich family", Veer Singh said looking at Preet. "That's why he kidnapped your wife isn't it? For the money. He is in desperate need of money. How much ransom did he ask you for?"
Preet ignored his question and picked up a photo frame standing on one side of the dressing table. It was of a picture of a young boy standing in front of a barn on a farm. He couldn't quite put his finger on it, but there was something very familiar about it. "What's this?" he asked.
"That's a picture of Viren when he was 10 years old", smiled Mr. Singh. "His father...I mean...his real father used to run a farm out in Ambala. He was a hard man to live with. He and Viren never saw eye to eye. His father was always putting him down and calling him a trouble maker. He used to punish him by burning him with cigarettes when he was little, you know that?"
Preet turned his face away refusing to feel sorry for Viren.
"Anyways, the threat of punishment never slowed Viren down", continued Mr. Singh. "In fact, he would always retaliate by running away. He'd never go very far of course. He would pack some food supplies and then go hide in that barn for days. My sister would go all crazy looking for him and he'd be fast asleep in the hay loft. Even after my sister remarried, and Viren would be upset with her or his new father, he'd always go running back to that old farm. My sister would call me up all worried and I'd remind her to go and look for him there. You know what they say...you always find what you're looking for in the last place you look. It's all abandoned and in shambles now but...".
"What did you just say?" Preet interrupted him.
"I was saying how it's a shame that the old farm is all abandoned and in shambles now" said Mr. Singh.
"No...before that", insisted Preet.
"What? That you always find what you're looking for in the last place you look", repeated Veer Singh.
"That's it!" cried Preet, as he headed towards the door. "Come on Gaurav let's go!"
