Part 6
The whole day passed with Madhu looking around the house and getting acquainted with everything. She entered a room that seemed not being used much. Maybe not used since a long time. She roamed about when she found a turned down picture frame. She picked it up and there was Radha and Mohan in the picture. A tear fell through her eyes as she hugged the picture. She didn't know whether she had to feel grief or guilt. As her father was the reason of their death.
"you are more than a daughter to me."
Madhu remembered Radha telling her more than once. A smile played on her lips even with the tears that were now flowing as she remembered them. And somehow it gave her courage to connect to them. She wasn't guilty anymore, and she felt she had the right to mourn for them.
While looking around the room Madhu found an old cardboard box in the almirah. She took the box out and opened it. There were some old pictures in the box. There were Radha and Mohan's wedding pics, then Rishu's birth. Even her parents wefe there. Then many were of her and Rishabh. She was overjoyed seeing their pictures. She picked up the box and decided to see them in her room. She was now sitting on her bed as she took out each picture one by one and cherished the memories. Many of the photos were the ones she didn't even remember. Just then she got hold of one photo. She remembered the day.
"ye to kitta buddhoo hai, Isko to kuch b ni pata.. (he is so stupid, he doesnt even know anything)
Baby Madhu's voice echoed in her mind. She was pestering Rishabh for something and he was running behind her trying to tell her that he was not stupid.
"I know you are stupid.. I know that" she said adamantly.
"Madhu, you marry me na?" asked baby Rishabh in his innocent tone scared that Madhu wont marry him if he would be stupid.
"If you promise to be a good boy and do 20 situps I will marry you.." Madhu said as much strict as she could sound.
Rishabh started doing situps with Madhu sitting on the sofa counting each of it with her finger moving along with him. That's when Radha clicked the picture.
She couldn't help but chuckle at the picture. How innocent they were then. They didnt even know what marriage was. And now here they were married but everything was so different than what either of them could have ever imagined.
Suddenly Madhu remembered that she had kept something on the gas burner in the kitchen. She quickly went to the kitchen.
Meanwhile RK entered the room. He had just returned from office. He threw his briefcase on the couch and started loosening his tie when his gaze fell on the pictures scattered on the bed. He walked slowly to the bed with a scrutinizing gaze. He picked up the picture which was kept on the top. It was him and his Madhu. The one he had loved all his life. A smile played on his lips as a tear of pain fell through his eye. Pain, of not able to get to that Madhu. He ran his finger across her face.
Just then Madhu came through the door and saw Rishabh standing near the bed with a picture in his hand. She was so delighted seeing all the old photos and reliving those memories that she almost forgot that he was not the same Rishabh anymore.
"Rishu!" She exclaimed excitedly.
RK was brought back to the reality. Anger started building up in him, he clenched his teeth in anger. When he turned back he was a different man.
"What do you think you are doing?" He said in a cold anger.
"What have I done?" She asked confused.
"Stop playing your games with me... I am no more the one you knew and neither you are the Madhu that I see here.." he said pointing at the pictures. "You are now my prey... whom I would play and humiliate to take my parent's revenge.. You think I love you? Or you think you would melt me with these tricks of yours?!" He shouted.
"But Rishu I was just seeing the pictures myself.. " she said now thoroughly afraid.
"You are not the mistress of this house.. You are not here to enjoy and leisure... You are my slave now.. Dont try to be more than what you are!" He said in a cold and angry tone.
Then he turned to the photos scattered on the bed and held them roughly crumbling them in his hands and threw them on the floor. "You think I would melt with this?" He said mocking her and next he took out a lighter from his pocket.
Madhu stared at him in horror not able to believe what she thought was going to happen. RK lighted fire and threw it on the pile of papers all the while eyeing Madhu to see the pain on her face. Madhu's eyes widened in shock and she ran to the pictures trying to save them. She didnt know why but she felt as if her life depended on it. Maybe because those were the only things in this house that she could connect with, that felt as hers. She beat the fire with her hands trying to kill it. RK stood in shock as well, he had least expected her to jump on that fire lit pile. As much as he wanted to enjoy the sight but when he noticed Madhu's hands which could get burnt, he couldn't think of anything else.
Suddenly Madhu felt a stream of water falling on the fire. She looked up to see where it came from and saw RK pouring water from a jug. After the fire died down RK stared at her for a few seconds. Then utterly disappointed with himself for melting for this girl, he threw the glass jug on the other end in frustration and stormed out of the room.
A trail of tears fell through her eyes as she picked up the half burnt pictures and hugged them to her bosom. She looked at the door through which RK had just walked off. Yes! he was RK.. He was not her Rishabh anymore.
RK went to the bar and took out a bottle. He opened the bottle roughly and gulped down as much as he could. He found himself stuck between Madhu and his parents. After the whole day of self-counseling he had persuaded himself against her, but seeing her he had again lost all his determination. He threw the bottle in frustration.
"Whom are you fighting with?" He heard a voice from the door. He turned to find Madhu standing there.
He smirked seeing the hurt on her face. "Did I hurt you darling? Very well coz I wanted that.." he said in his own appraisal.
"Yes I am hurt... seeing you in so much pain.. You were never like this.. what has happened to you? Why are you letting this evil win over you?" she asked angrily as she stepped closer to him.
"because I have paid the price of being upright.. And evil is what wins in this world.."
"this is not what Radha aunty taught you! Or me?" she said in disbelief.
"don't take her name with this filthy mouth of yours.." he screamed in disgust. "this is what your father taught me.." he said with a smirk.
Madhu's eyes lowered as she felt his words hitting her. ever since she came to know about Malik she was ashamed of being his daughter.
"What happened?" RK asked in a mocking tone. "Feeling ashamed? Or suddenly you decided to scrutinize my floor?" He said making fun of her.
"Everything is perfect in my land Madhubala.. Perfect flooring, perfect me, perfect plan and a perfect Prey.." he said pulling her chin with his finger. Madhu looked at him in the eye. Everytime he behaved like this and she had to make herself believe somehow that it was Rishabh she was talking to.
"Rishu... Please come back.. Dont be this stubborn.. What Papa did we will punish him together.. but please dont do this to yourself.. You are Mohan uncle's son.." she tried to call out to him who was hidden inside this hard man. RK suddenly felt himself melting again at her benevolent call. He couldnt bear those eyes piercing him anymore. He suddenly pushed her away as if trying to free himself from the hold of her gaze.
Madhu disbalanced and fell on the ground which had broken glass of the bottle that he had thrown earlier. She screamed in pain as her hands had gotten cut because of the glass and RK turned to her worriedly.
"Madhu.." was what could come out of his mouth. It was soft enough that it wasnt audible to even himself. Madhu was busy in checking her wounds as blood trickled through them as she was flinching in pain.
Suddenly she felt a rough hold on her arm. She looked up to see RK holding her by the arm and was dragging her out of the bar. "Rishu..." she said crying in pain but RK wasnt ready to listen right now.
He took her in his room and almost threw her on the bed. The next he went to his almirah and took out a box. Still in his angry stride he walked back to the bed as he roughly held her one hand and inspected it for any glass pieces still left. He dressed both the hands one by one. Though he was dressing her wounds, he was still handling her way too roughly and even his hold was causing pain to Madhu. She flinched in pain as he held her hand tighly. Hearing her voice suddenly RK realized his grip was way too tight. He looked at her for a second and saw her flinched expressions. He left her hand softly and proceeded to put bandage.
The dinner was quite where both had mutually decided not to look at each other. Acting as if the other didnt exist, they both finished the eating and went to the room. Madhu quickly laid on the couch while RK went to freshen up. When he came back Madhu had already slept or that she acted that she had slept. He stared at her for a few seconds with hurt in his eyes and then went to bed.
