Friends, apologies once again for the delay. Here it is finally!

CHAPTER 7

"Good to see you looking much more relaxed and cheerful then before, Ashutosh. Any change in Mallika's condition?"

Ashutosh was surprised by Dr Dubey's question. Was he really looking any different?

As Dr Dubey looked at him expectantly, Ashutosh realized he was still waiting for his response.

"Unfortunately no, Sir!"

Dr Dubey gave him a comforting pat on his back.

"God keeps reminding us that there is nothing much we can do in the face of his will. Anyway, stay cheerful and positive. Surely there is light at the end of the tunnel!"

Dr Dubey's words reminded him strangely of Nidhi. She and Ashi had brought in so much sunshine and cheer into their dreary existence. Riya had truly blossomed in the last six weeks since she had come under Nidhi's care. He didn't feel like using the word treatment because Nidhi's approach seemed more like personal care than mere concern for a patient. If it was possible to form a maternal bond in the space of forty two days, then that is what she shared with Riya. The girl was soaking it all up, much like the parched ground greedily absorbs the blessings showered on it by the rain Gods. What a pleasure it was to watch the three girls together. They had gone on shopping expeditions, tried out lipsticks and fashion while he had watched them with a foolish grin on his face. The image of his daughter pirouetting in front of him in the pretty white gown that Nidhi had picked for her came to his mind. There was some kind of cultural event in Riya's school and she was to play a fairy. She was to be kitted with a gown, a wand and wings. If it had been like before, Ashutosh was sure Riya would have turned down the opportunity. He still remembered how she had hesitantly broached the topic when they had sat at the park one evening. Ashi was clowning around as usual, running after butterflies.

"Will you make me wings?"

Ashutosh had been taken aback and waited with bated breath for Nidhi's response. This was way beyond the call of duty even if Nidhi had never allowed their time together to acquire a formal hue.

"Of course I will, my darling Ri!"

The dazzling smile on the girl's face had Ashutosh trying to valiantly push back the tears that threatened to escape his eyes.

"You don't mind my calling you, Ri na? Riya is such a pretty name but Ri feels so special. Just like you feel to me!"

Nidhi had thrown her arm around Riya and she had snuggled to her side.

"I am going to play a fairy!"

"Oh my, I can't think of anyone who would make a prettier fairy!"

Ashi had run to them just then and the response had her pouting.

"Me fairy, Nima?"

Nidhi had pulled her curly pigtails.

"You are Nima's cute little pixie!"

Ashi had seemed to like the sound of pixie. She had turned to Ashutosh.

"Ashi pixie, Ashie pixie.!"

Ashutosh had picked her up and whirled her around, causing her to scream with laughter.

What a perfect family picture they must present to onlookers, Ashutosh hadn't been able to help thinking!

He had wanted to ask Nidhi about Ashi's father at times but somehow the opportunity had never presented itself.

So they had gone, Nidhi and he, to the cultural event. and Nidhi had whooped loudly to cheer Riya as she had come on stage. She had looked as pretty as a picture in that white gown with a silver tiara on her head, waving her wand and showing off her wings.

They had taken a selfie that day, the two adults and their two daughters. They had had to crowd together to fit in, with Ashi in Ashutosh's arms and Riya's arms around Nidhi's neck. Ashutosh had lost count of the number of times he had pulled his phone to take a look at that picture. It made his heart feel so much lighter and put a smile on his face.

Armaan had caught him in the act once.

"If I didn't know better, i would think you were admiring a secret girlfriend!"

Ashutosh had turned red in the face as Armaan had taken the phone from him.

He had looked at the picture for a few seconds before looking back at Ashutosh.

"You all look so happy together, Ashu!"

Ashu had looked up at him startled but there was so much affection and generosity in Armaan's eyes.

"It's okay, Ashu. You are entitled to laugh, cry and be happy. Your life cannot come to standstill because of Mallika!"

Ashutosh had hugged him tight. How large a heart must this man possess to want to see his brother-in-law happy and smiling even if his sister was lost to madness!

Ashutosh came back to the present as the phone on his desk rang. He picked it up hurriedly.

"Sir, your last appointment has called and cancelled owing to some family emergency!"

"That's fine!"

He put the phone down and checked the watch on his wrist.

It was a quarter past four. Should he call Nidhi and ask her if she was free to meet along with the kids? Would she think he was imposing too much? Feeling the need for a cup of coffee, he decided to walk to the canteen. It would do to get some fresh air, rather than stay cooped up in his cabin.

As he walked down the corridor, he spotted Nidhi at a distance.

She was standing outside the OP with a worried look on her face. What was she doing here, at his hospital and why hadn't she even informed him that she was here?

As he neared her, he spotted the blood spots on her off white top. It was enough for him to break into a half sprint, covering the distance in a half a dozen long strides.

"What happened?"

His panicked shout had her turning in his direction along with the dozen or so of the hospital staff who were around there.

"Ashi had a fall!"

He felt like someone had kicked him hard. He couldn't bear the thought of the imp in pain. She was so precious!

"What happened, why didn't you call me?"

The second question surprised him as much as it did her.

Why did he imagine that she would call him when her daughter was hurt?

She was the first to recover her composure.

"Ashutosh, she's fine. Don't worry!"

Just then, the little imp was wheeled out of the OP with a cast on her foot and a small bandage on her head.

One glimpse of her and Ashutosh saw red.

"You call this fine? She has a head injury and a broken foot and you call it fine?"

He turned back to the duty doctor and barked.

"Did you run a brain CT?"

The junior looked at him open-mouthed.

Nidhi touched his arm.

"Ashutosh, just relax. It is just a shallow wound. The bandage is making it look worse than it really is. She would have probably needed just three or four sutures!"

She looked at the junior doctor who nodded hurriedly.

"Yes Mam, just four!"

"What needle did you use? Who did the suturing? Why wasn't I called?"

The last question was directed at Nidhi again.

Sensing that her mother might be in some sort of trouble, Ashi chose just that moment to try and get off the chair.

Before she could move so much as half an inch, Ashutosh had rushed to her side and caught her in his arms.

"Ashi baby, Papa is here. What a scare you gave me!"

He hugged her tight to him, unmindful of the startled gazes of all those around.

It did not even seem to have registered on him that he had referred to himself as Ashi's father. Nidhi realized though that it had not escaped any of the others. She hoped they would let it pass as the distraught mumbling of a man in distress.

Nidhi decided that they had been the focus of attention for long enough.

"Ashtuosh, I think I should take Ashi home!"

He turned in her direction with the child in his arms and her arms around his neck.

"Your car is back from servicing?"

"No, we took a cab!"

As if coming to a decision, he started walking towards the door with the baby in his arms.

Nidhi had to run after them to fall in step.

"Ashutosh, where are you going?"

"Taking Ashi home!"

"Ashutosh, you can't just abandon your patients and work. I am more than capable of taking my daughter home!"

He looked at her coolly.

"I don't have any more appointments for the day. I am free to leave. And I want to take you both home and make sure everything is fine. Anything else?"

Nidhi could not think of anything else and so she let it pass and walked quietly behind him as he headed towards his car.

"You sit in the back and hold her in your arms. Be careful not to hurt her!"

"I gave birth to her, you know?"

"I was right there, you know?"

He had left her without a response yet again.

After making sure they were safely ensconced in the rear seat, Ashutosh got into the driver's seat and put the car in motion.

The journey was completed almost in silence with the slight snores of the baby the only sound in the car.

Ashutosh parked quickly in front of Nidhi's flat and jumped out of the car to take the child from her arms.

As she got the key out of her bag and opened the door, he walked in and looked at her for directions.

"The last room to the left!"

He walked in that direction, entering the room and placing the baby softly on the bed and patting her when she seemed to waken up for a moment. He placed a pillow under her leg, drew the comforter over her, picked up the AC remote and adjusted the room temperature.

As he turned, he saw her standing at the doorway with arms folded and watching him with a smile.

"What are you looking at?"

"You've developed a bond with her, haven't you?"

He looked at her steadily as he responded,.

"The very minute when I first held her in my arms. I just never thought I would see her again!"

She sighed as she moved away and walked towards the living area.

"Is it safe to leave her alone?"

"We are at a distance of ten feet from her, It will take us ten seconds at best to reach her even if she calls. And if I know my medicine, they surely must have given her a mild sedative to help her handle the pain. I would think it is safe. Am not sure if you agree though!"

Her teasing smile revealed that she was pulling his leg and he shrugged his shoulders.

"I am going to make some chai? What about you?"

"Adrak wali?" he asked hopefully.

She shook her head in wonder.

"Chocolate chip and now adrak wali chai!"

"So you like it too?"

"Chai without adrak is like the night without the moon, like the sea without the water, like the...!"

He started laughing.

"Now I know where Ashi gets her loonyness from!"

"Did you just call me a loony?"

"A certified loony. Is that better?"

Nidhi suddenly felt like crying. The tension of the last couple of hours, the terror she had felt when she had first seen her baby's face covered in blood, her weariness at having to deal with it all alone!

"Where is your aunt? Your Dadi Bua right?

"You remember?"

"How can I forget? She stood rooted to the spot, staring at you in awe even as I kept screaming at her for hot water. You had to forget your pain and scream Dadi Bua for her to be roused and get into action!"

"You remember every detail of that day!"

He sighed hard as he nodded.

"She has gone to a day long satsang. She will be back by late evening!"

They were seated in the living room, sipping their tea when it suddenly struck him.

"You must practically feel like a single mother. Must be difficult to be married to a man in the army. So where is your husband posted now?"

I am only asking you to let me do whatever I need to do about my daughter!" Armaan was as usual great as supporting cast. 😃

You are making me feel more and more sad for Riya 😭 Such an adorable and understanding child... maturing early than her age... So delighted with her Papa's love and care, but at the same time, she doesnt forget to bid her grandmom "bye" and seeks her father's approval even before going to choose an ice-ream flavor for herself... so docile, disciplined and obedient girl...

Awww... I love this little imp Ashi so much. 😃 ❤️ Her segments always make me grin from ear to ear amidst all mysterious and senti. senti. scenes!! This is so cute... "Thanks to Nemo, I became Nima!" 😃 😆

Loved the father-daughter bonding very very much. 😃 Poor thing... Riya's yearning for her mother's love and care, seeing Nidhi-Ashi bonding, is so palpable... She gets appeased when being referred to as "big", that itself shows how deeply, the child suffers from identity crisis in the autocratic environment imposed by her grandmom. Was so gladdening to see her getting to breathe fresh air and slowly opening up. Nidhi has been successful in bridging the gap... Riya isnt under her Dr. wali impression now but feels like a mother-figure in her and asks her if like Ashi she too can call her Nima!! 👏👏👏 Sheer brilliance... Hats off to your writing Umaji!! 👏 ⭐️ ❤️

Ashu-Nidhi both are fan of Chocolate-chip icecream!! Great going!! Abhi ice-cream ki choice same milti hai... aage aage aur bhi bahut kuch same milega 😳 Awaiting Ch-7 now!! 😃

You told me to drop Ji and call you Uma only... but it will take some time for me to leave out Ji... your exemplary writing skills have earned so much respect for you from me, so not comfy with calling you Uma only 😳 You please call me Tupu only... no Ji business 😃

Tupu, the joy you give me through these detailed reviews of yours more than matches any writing skills I may possess, exemplary or otherwise. So please do consider calling me Uma.

Thank you so much for all your love 🤗

Is it because Ashutosh really did have slipped outta his marriage - at least for once??? OR he actually didnt but it appeared so to Mallika and she couldnt take it??? (Maybe some misunderstanding/misinterpretation of events... as in the song "Hum bewafa hargiz na the, Per hum wafa kar na sake... Tumne jo dekha-suna sach tha magar... kitna tha sach ye kisko pata... Jane tumko maine koi dhokha diya, Jane phir tumhein koi dhokha hua...") OR the mentally disturbed, emotionally vulnerable Mallika counts on Ashutosh sooo muchhh that she fears someone will snatch her support away and gets fits at mere thought - like the Schizophrenia patients have fears/delusions/illusions/hallucinations and they believe them to be existing for real - Mallika too is Schizophrenic here??? But then you have been emphasizing on Ashutosh overcompensating and being too much guilt-ridden/paroxysmal of guilt... This couldn't be w/o he himself being at fault... So if Ashuji ka "Peir phisla" toh woh kahan, kab aur kaise phisla... Who's the "partner-in-crime"??? 😉😆 And for Nidhi, kis ne unka "Peir bhaari" kiya??? 😳 Why did he then disappear (OR desert/dump Nidhi 😲 😒 )???

Bas... in both pairs - AshMal and NidhiMr.X, only this "Peir" wali mystery is making me 🤔 Hope next update throws at least sme light on at least one of these "Peir" problems!!! 😛😆🤪

On a serious notes, hats off to you Madamji... Six updates have been released with all mysteries intact and nada romance quotient... still you have the readers hooked to the story and waiting for next!! 👏 So far, for me, Sujatha Rao Ma'am has been the only writer who could achieve such a great impact on readers!! Sorry that you're being compared to her every time, but I must say, there's some uncanny resemblance between her and your writing styles!! You must have been ace student of her and she must read this ff... am sure she'd be very proud of U!! 👏

Hahaha...the 'peir' ka suspense...it is slowly getting unraveled.

And thank you so much for even making a comparison to Sujatha Mam. I can proudly say I am one of her favorite students 😳. Like I said before, I think I am unconsciously modelling my writing on hers. Not sure she would approve though 😕

Writing again. 😳
I loved Ashu this time for confronting his MIL for the first time i guess. And very nicely has he taken his stand for his daughter's well being. He is a father to her and he has every right to take care of her. Hope he'll be more with Riya from now. Armaan took my heart away when he changed the topic sensing Riya should not listen to the bad words there.
Ri - very nice nick name to the Ashu baby. Loved to see him so loving and caring his girl. The happy go merry time at the Ice cream parlour is the Ice on the cake this time. I loved all the four spending a quality time like a family 😳 The father daughter bond is getting strong and Riya is opening up much more, Thanks to Nidhi's advise and efforts !
Nima, so her Ashi calls her with this name. Very cute reason and the way Nidhi has brought her up. She is an entertainer and knows whom to call Didi. Lovely!!! ⭐️
I am liking the progress of the story.😔 And no matter what, the theme is so strong that you are working upon that romance is felt through the cute gestures of ---- Ashu- Nidhi, Ashi - Riya . And what more is the aspect of the life. Good and a beautiful life with all the colours of life making you smile.A real romance.😃
Thanks dear. 🤗

Thank you so much, Babita.

The review is as sweet as you are. Thank you for making so much of an effort, dear 🤗. And I really liked Nima too. You noticed and I am so pleased 😃
