CHAPTER 5. BATHROOM ROMANCE!
OR WAS IT BATHROOM SHOCK?
DAY 2 OF THE TRAINING.
Let it be noted that Geet was tired! She had not slept a single moment the whole night as she tried to cram up every word she was reading into her brain. She had read everything about parts of speech like adjectives, adverbs, verbs etc - Some words can work as noun and as verb too? Hey Babaji! - and figures of speech like alliteration, hyperbole, onomatopoeia, euphemism and God knows what all. The sheer variety in tenses boggled her and the difference between main and auxiliary verb had her astounded. She almost pulled her hair out trying to understand the features of phrases and clauses and idioms. All in all, Geet had a very productive night and had gone to sleep only around 3 AM and that also not by her own decision but due to exhaustion. Hence, when Geet woke up in the morning, it was not surprising that she did not notice the time. If she had she would have known that it was 7 in the morning and she is supposed to be at dining table by 7:30 for breakfast and in the study room by 8 for her training session before Maan and Dev went off to their office around 9. Habituated to wake up around 6 from her school days, Geet assumed it was 6 in the morning when she entered her bathroom for taking bath.
Shock was the expression Geet had on her face when she entered the bathroom. Her jaw dropped open and her eyes widened. It seemed that in her excitement and nervousness of yesterday Geet did not notice one giant thing sitting right in the middle of the bathroom floor. And what was that thing?
"BATHTUB!", Geet squealed as she ran towards the tub in excitement. She touched it reverently. Now you must be wondering at why our beloved Geet was acting so crazy about bathtub? Because in her whole life she had never gotten the chance to take bath in a bathtub. And from her childhood, after watching film actresses get out of a bathtub in a flimsy towel, it had become a fantasy for Geet to take bath in a bathtub while playing with the bubbles and soap. Her eyes looked around in eagerness searching for something and once her eyes found them she scrambled off and grabbed the bottle. It was a bubble maker! She grinned eagerly and imagined herself getting into the bath tub, sitting in the bubble filled water, applying the soap on her body the way she had seen all the heroines in Lux Ad do. Haaye! Kitna mazaa aayega!
An hour later Geet found herself submerged in the bubble filled water, playing with the bubbles happily. Time kya hua hoga? She wondered. It must be 6:30, she decided. If only she had checked the time, she would have known that it was 8, the time for her training session. If only she had checked the time, what next was about to happen would not have happened. But then, if the upcoming incident did not occur, how would have Maan and Geet's love story gotten its kickstart?
Meanwhile in the study room...
"WHERE THE HELL IS THIS GIRL?", roared Maan Singh Khurana as he paced the room to and fro.
Annie and Dev looked at each other in worry. Where was Geet? Didn't she learn by now that Maan lacked patience? Skipping breakfast was alright but skipping training session?
"Bro! Shaayad raat bhar padhne ke baad so gayi hogi... (May be she is sleeping after studying the whole night...)", Dev tried to explain but Maan cut him off.
"Toh kya? Alarm laga sakti thi? There is something called alarm clock in her room! It isn't a show piece! It is supposed to be used! Aur phir training session sirf subah hoti hai. Uske baad toh hum office jaate hain. Geet dopahar ko bhi so sakti hai! (And then the training session is in the morning! Then we are off to office. Geet can sleep in the noon too!) Here I am trying to help her out of goodness of my heart and she is wasting my time!"
Help her out of goodness of heart? More like tricked into helping her! Annie and Dev thought simultaneously.
"You know what, forget it.", Maan roared, "Main hi jaake use le aata hoon! And I will also give her the piece of my mind!"
Maan stormed off before Dev could stop him and Annie could offer to check on Geet.
Geet's Room...
Maan barged into the room and looked around. Where is she? Where is that blasted girl? He trudged towards the bed and ripped off the bed sheets seeing no one there. Where is this girl? He looked around in anger. That is when his eyes fell on the bathroom door which was slightly ajar. Yeh darwaza kyun khula hai? Kahin Geet andar gir toh nahi gayi? Kahin uska pair fisla ho aur... (Why is the door open? Has Geet fallen down inside? May her leg slipped and...) Worried for Geet, he ran off right into the room only to stop in his tracks as his eyes took in the sight in front of him. No! Not sight! A vision! He stared with wide eyes at vision in front of him.
There was Geet sitting in a bathtub filled with bubbly and soapy water, popping the bubbles and giggling. She was into the water till her neck, hiding her body fully except for her legs which she seem to pull out of water and let it fall back creating a splash. She giggled and laughed at the splashing, seeming to enjoy herself. Maan stared at the scene. Yes! Except her legs and face, nothing was visible for Maan to stare. But those legs! Those oh so torturously sensuous legs! Maan could not stop himself from drooling over them! They seem to be so slender and so long! They seemed to be going on and on! So fair and without any blemish! So smooth and creamy! They seem to be calling him, luring him close! And those droplets of water dripping from them making Maan want to go near and wipe them away. How dare they get the chance to cling to those legs when he was not given a chance to even stare at them on a normal day! After all, they always seem to be covered with salwars or with stockings when Geet worked as a waitress. Maybe he should ask Annie to get Geet western wear with small skirts. Yes! Lots and lots of western wear! And lots of mini skirts too! Maan was lost in those legs so much that he did not notice Geet looking up or her eyes widening at seeing him. But he did take notice when she started screaming.
"AAAHHH!", Geet started to scream while Maan, who had just came out of the leg trance, looked at her in shock and horror as he realised where exactly he was and who he was actually ogling. Geet continued to scream making Maan angry.
Finally Maan had enough of Geet's screaming, "CHUP! BILKUL CHUP!"
Geet shut up for a moment looking at him stupefied but then she looked down, remembered her predicament and started screaming again. Maan flinched at her volume and closed his eyes, "Kyun chilla rahi ho?" (Why are you shouting?)
Geet let out a squeak, "Kyunki aap mujhe dekh rahe hain! (Because you are staring at me!) PEECHE MUDIYE! RIGHT NOW! TURN AROUND! RIGHT NOW! Dekhiye! Agar aap abhi mude nahi toh main aise hi chillaate rahungi! (If you did not turn then I will keep on screaming!) AAAHH!"
Maan turned around in instant just wanting Geet to shut up. He gritted his teeth, wanting to forget Geet's legs, and roared at her, "Main wahaan study room mein kabse tumhaara wait kar raha hoon aur tum yahaan paani mein khel rahi ho! (I have been waiting for you in my study and you are playing with water here!) Have you gone mad?" Saying his piece he turned around to glare at her only to wince and turn back as Geet let out a shriek.
"Answer me Geet! What kind of behavior is this?"
Geet pouted, "Sorry Sir! Par main kya", Geet bit her tongue as she remembered that she was supposed to speak in English, "But what can I do Sir? I never took bath in bathtub! Aaj tak maine kabhi bath tub mein nahaaya nahi! Sachchi! So when I saw bubble bottle and bathtub, I could not... uh... uh... Rok nahi paayi! Could not stop myself!"
Maan felt anger erupt inside him and he turned around to scold her only to turn back again as Geet let out another shriek.
Facing away from her, he started scolding her, "And you assumed this was the right time to take bath? When I am supposed to train you!"
Geet huffed, "Sorry Sir! Par main ... what can I do? Mazaa itna aa raha tha ki I did not see the time!"
Maan rolled his eyes and barked at her, "Get out! Get out of that damn bloody tub right now!"
He winced as Geet let out a loud squeal, "Ab kyun chilla rahi ho? (Now why are you shouting?) "
Geet's reply came out very subdued, "Kyunki maine ... Me not wearing anything and I did not bring towel in!"
Maan's eyes widened as flashes of those long legs passed through his mind. Stunned by her admission, he looked at her. Geet let out a shriek again and he looked away with a jerk.
Flustered by her admission, Maan looked around nervously as the vision of her legs danced across his eyes. His heart raced wildly at the thought of her coming out of the bathtub wearing nothing and he gulped.
"Ah... Ah...", Maan stuttered and then annoyed at the way she seemed to be affecting him he roared out, "Get out of that tub! I want you in my study in 10 minutes!", Saying his piece, he stormed out of the bathroom and walked out of the room. As soon as he walked out of the room, he stopped for a second and took a deep breath. He closed his eyes trying to calm his racing heart but all he got was glimpses of her leg flashing through his eyes. Maan opened his eyes in a flash. Calm down Maan! It isn't as if you have never seen a girl's leg! Yes! But they were never in your house, coming right out of a bathtub wearing nothing!', answered his traitorous heart. Maan let out a growl and stalked off to his study.
Annie and Dev looked with wide eyes as Maan paced the room constantly. Why did he seem more agitated than before? Geet ne aisa kya kiya? Both wondered but kept their mouth shut. No need to poke an already angry lion!
Geet entered the room in hurry but jerked to a stop at the sight of Maan pacing. Maan turned around to look at her but the moment their eyes clashed they looked away as what happened in the bathroom flashed through their minds. Annie and Dev threw each other another puzzled glance.
"Did you read those books I gave you yesterday?", Maan asked and Geet nodded, "Yes Sir!"
"Ok! Tell me about yourself!", Maan ordered and Geet threw him a puzzled look, "Sir?" Yeh mere baare mein kyun jaanna chaahte hain? (Why does he want to know about me?)
Maan rolled his eyes, "I don't want to know about you! I am testing your grammar, you idiot!"
Geet's jaw dropped open at Maan's words, "I am not idiot!"
Dev chuckled, "Not an idiot Geet! Not an idiot! Anything starting with vowel has to have an' in front of it!"
Geet nodded and then turned towards Maan, "I am not an idiot!"
Maan shook his head at her words and continued, "Theek hai! Tell me then! Tell me about yourself!"
Geet grinned eagerly, "My name is Geet Handa!"
Dev chuckled, interrupting her and she pouted at him in annoyance.
Dev smiled at her, "Are you giving introduction at your school?"
Geet huffed and Maan rolled his eyes, "Say I am Geet Handa!'"
"Ya toh you can say it James Bond style! Handa! Geet Handa!", Dev imitated and Geet piped in with, "Naam toh suna hi hoga!"
Dev looked at her surprised, "Movies fan?"
Geet nodded eagerly and both exchanged high fives.
"Are you two done acting like small kids?" Maan gave them a glare and both sobered up. Annie rolled her eyes.
"And you! Do you need a special invitation to start talking about yourself? Ya tumhaare liye koi mahurat dhoondhke laaun? (Or should I find an auspicious time for you?) ", Maan roared at Geet and Geet pouted.
She started her monologue again, "I am Geet Handa! I made a new friend. She is an Annie!"
"An Annie?", Annie interrupted in confusion.
Geet looked at her confused, "Did Dev Sir not say...", she looked at Maan and Dev in confusion, "that anything starting with vowel has to have an' in front of it?"
Dev and Annie slapped their foreheads while Maan clenched his jaw tightly.
"You know what! Forget it!", Maan hissed, "I am done with you today! Write your essay on a paper and show me in the evening. Annie! Just help her!"
Maan stalked away fuming and Geet stared at Dev and Annie helplessly.
It was evening when Geet entered the study nervously. Maan was seated in his chair behind the table going through some reports.
"Sir! My homework!", Geet whispered.
Maan looked up in confusion and Geet placed the paper in front of him. He looked through it and remembered the homework he had given her in the morning. He nodded and looked back at the reports. Geet turned to walk away when "Geet!", Maan called her.
Geet turned to see him and Maan pointed towards a book lying in front of him, "Read this book!"
Geet frowned as she hurried back and picked up the book, "Pride and Prejudice!"
She looked up in surprise and grinned at Maan, "Pride and Prejudice! Maine..."
She stopped speaking as Maan glared at her. English! Right!
"I heard about this book in school. I wanted to read it from that time! Darcy and Lizzie's romance is so ...er...er...interesting!", Geet gazed at the book dreamily and Maan rolled his eyes.
"Yes! It is a very famous book and is regarded as one of the classics! It is a must read for every fiction literature lover. But that is not why I handed the book to you!", Maan spoke absentmindedly already lost in the reports in front of him.
Geet frowned, "Then why do you want me to read it?"
Maan looked up, "It was written in 19th Century. That is why you will find that the written and the spoken English is complex in this book compared to the 20th Century literature. Reading it will improve your English!"
Geet rolled her eyes. Of course! My English!
Maan continued, "I want this book fully read by tomorrow morning!"
"Kya?", Geet asked in shock.
Maan just gave her a look and Geet huffed, "Fine! I will read it tonight!"
As she turned and walked off, she looked at the book in worry. The whole book? In one night? Hey Babaji!
NOTE:
I have read your reviews and noticed that you liked the selective translating style.
So I will continue with it. I will translate the earlier chapters soon.
Also those of you who have watched the movie must have noticed that I am deviating from the original plot. That is because a movie is for 2 to 3 hours only and we don't have to adhere to that strict time limit here! Plus, my stories are incomplete without a good dollop of romantic and comic scenes!
So expect lots of deviation from the movie but I will adhere to the basic concept!
That won't change!
Also some scenes from the movie will not be in the chronological order as I am changing the order to suit my plot.
Thanks, take care and have fun,
Kalpana
