CHAPTER II

There is no pain, you are receding
A distant ship smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying

I have become comfortably numb

All Sharon could see around her was thick white fog. A constant buzzing sound reached her ears and she couldn't figure out where it came from. Sharon looked around, trying to figure out where it came from. Sharon looked around to find something and her eyes got stuck on the figure unveiling from the mist. It was a woman, clad in a sari, her long hair swishing around her. Her eyes were the same as Sharon and she was beaming at Sharon radiantly. With a jolt, Sharon realised who it was.

"Mom" she whispered.

Before she could take a step a dazzling white light blinded her and she found herself sucked into a vortex. And within seconds everything stopped. Sharon could hear her heart beat steadily. Her eyelids twitched and she opened them slowly to find herself underneath a greyish ceiling.

Swayam walked towards the storage room, ignoring the continuous beeps of his phone. Right now he just needed to be alone, to suppress the torrent of emotions raging inside him. He needed an outlet. He entered the huge storeroom stacked with all sorts of medical requirements. The space in the middle of the room had been cleared and a full size mirror compromised a wall. Swayam had had it put up there on his own expense. He untucked his shirt, loosened his collar and began to dance.

Sharon blinked her eyes open to see a white coat hovering in the air, before seeing the person in it. It had been so long since she got here and every freaking minute she spent here was a waste of time. Oh hell. Sharon tilted her head towards the doctor near her bed.

"Found out what's wrong with me?"

The clipboard move aside to reveal the cute and handsome face of the doctor.

"Not yet. Don't worry we will, you are not going anywhere." He said with a not-so-sweet smile on his face.

Sharon scowled and started, "look I feel completely alright. So let me go?"

Nikhil cast her a pitiful look "you say so but sadly your body does not. You are going to stay here till we fix you, even if a meteor crashes here before that, get it?"

"I won't pay"

"I have your phone. I'll ask your uncle to pay"

"I'll tell him not to pay."

"In that case, being the world-famous billionaire I am, I myself will pay for your treatment."

Sharon closed her eyes in defeat. Why was he caring so much? Deep down, she did want to get fixed, but maybe she didn't want to. She was strange and she knew it.

"Look dr.-"

"I would suggest you stop talking now. Trust me Sharon, things aren't fine with you that's why it's taking us time to diagnose you. You've got a head injury and god knows how many and what complications it has caused. To top it all the anti-depressants you take messes with our tests. So don't waste your time arguing with me because I and my friend are not going to fulfill your death wish." Saying so, Nikhil walked away leaving Sharon mentally exhausted.

Frankly speaking she wouldn't mind dying now. It was not as if anyone cared for her. Yes her aunt and uncle were there but Sharon knew she was a burden on them. They will grieve her for some days and then time will heal their wounds, enabling them to move on.

Stop it! Don't talk like a quitter Sharon. You lived till this day and you WILL LIVE tomorrow.

She was tired now. The weight on her head was making Sharon drowsy and she closed her eyes, plunging into a deep sleep.

Swayam's feet moved furiously on the floor, setting it on fire. Seeing his agitated form on the mirror added fuel to his angst. Gradually, it calmed him, helped keep himself in check. Flashes from that dreadful day kept coming to him continuously. THAT incident which had left a scar in his soul. He found it difficult to bear those flashes. He could hear her voice, the last call before THAT happened.

"I am coming to you Swayam. Just few more minutes."

"Did you miss me Sammy? Well I did. Look outside. I am nearly there"

A 16 year old Swayam ran outside the gate in excitement, waiting for his elder sister to come home, to come to him.

"I see you!" he had shouted through the phone.

"I do too Swa-"

What happened next had took Swayam's breath away. He saw the car lose control and fly into the divider, turning upside down.

"NO!" Swayam gasped falling onto his knees, his heart weighing a ton. Tears welled up in his eyes. He sister dying had left such a big hole in his life. He found it difficult to come out of that tragedy even after passage of 10 years.

TRING! TRING!

It was Nikhil.

"Hello?"

"Swayam, look I need you to come back here. I've been assigned another patient so you need to take over Sharon."

"But-"

"No buts Swayam. I understand you but you are in the hospital now. So buck up and do your job okay? Bye." Nikhil said hurriedly.

Nikhil was right, he had to do his job, treat that girl.

Sharon was awake after her second nap in the morning. Her head was hurting her and her fractured arm was supported with plaster and immobile. A nurse was checking her readings, noting them down seriously when the door slid open.

A young doctor of nearly her age strode inside with a blank expression glued to his face. He didn't look straight at Sharon but went towards the nurse, checking the readings on her clipboard. She scrutinized the doctor. He had a lean frame, slightly long, brownish hair which fell over his forehead and had a squarish jaw. Err. Why was she checking him out again?

The doctor turned towards Sharon and she saw a badge on his coat which read- Swayam Shekawat. She then locked her eyes with his and gasped. Sharon saw a sense of emptiness in his eyes, the pain of losing someone dear, the look she saw in her eyes every time she faced a mirror.

Before he could say sometime Sharon asked "Err. I know you are supposed to ask me this, but are YOU alright?"

"Why do you ask?" his tone was bland.

"I don't know. I just felt like...you know that you..." her voice trailed off into nothingness.

Swayam was taken aback. Could she really see the pain in his eyes? Was he so easy to read? He didn't know the answer but this girl was giving him goose bumps now.
