Chapter 33 - A Dead End
Link to: Table of Contents
"Here Preet", said Sam, as she handed him a cup. "Have some coffee".
"Thanks", Preet said quietly.
"I can't believe this is happening", sighed Gaurav. "Meher kidnapped?! This is like something out of a mystery novel. I mean these things don't happen to ordinary 9 to 5 people like us".
"I'm sure the police is doing everything they can to find her", Sam said reassuringly.
"I don't know", sighed Preet. "As soon as he found out Meher and I had lied about being married before, Inspector Khan started questioning me as if I was the prime suspect".
"You've got to be kidding me right?" said Sam. "I mean we know all know Viren is behind this. It must be him. He was the one she ran away from in the first place. She was always so paranoid about him finding her. Who else would want to kidnap her?"
"You know that. And I know that", said Preet. "But there isn't any evidence to link him to the crime. Without evidence we can't make any charges against him stick. It would just be my word against his. Plus Inspector Khan says we can't rule out the possibility that Meher walked in on a burgulary at Rajveer's place. Or the fact that maybe the thieves who stole her jewelry and kidnapped her when she first came to Mumbai, took her again".
"Hmm...I never thought of that", said Sam. "Do you think that's a possibility?"
"I don't know Sam", said Preet. "I'm so confused I really don't know what to think".
"Have you spoken to your family yet?" asked Gaurav.
"Only PB", said Preet. "I had to tell him everything in case the police called him to confirm my story. I still have no clue what I'm going to say to Ma or Meher's family yet. I mean, up until now my biggest worry was to find a way to tell my mother that we got married without her blowing her top...not that Meher got kidnapped, despite everything. This is not how I thought things would work out. It's all my fault. I never should have left her alone even for a minute. I was supposed to keep her safe. I should have kept her safe".
"Preet, you can't beat yourself over this. You did everything you could", Gaurav said, as he placed a reassuring hand on his friend's shoulder. "I'm sure the police is doing everything they can too".
As if on cue, Preet's phone rang. It was Inspector Khan. "Hello?" Preet said. Concern was evident in his tone.
"Mr. Juneja, its Inspector Khan", he said. "We checked with all of Meher's neighbors. No one reported having seen anything unusual".
"What about the building manager?" Preet asked. "Did you ask him what Viren was doing that day in Meher's apartment disguised as an electrician?"
"Well according to him, he was a legitimate electrician, from a respectable shop hired to make repairs", said Inspector Khan. "The building manager let him in her apartment, and making repairs is not against the law. Oh and I haven't had a chance to speak to the pandit just yet, but I did manage to get in touch with your brother and he confirmed your engagement and hit and run story".
Preet rolled his eyes. You could have saved yourself a lot of time and trouble if you had believed me in the first place Inspector. He grumbled to himself.
"I also sent a man down to Mr. Kashyap's place", continued the police man. "But he wasn't there. In fact, his uncle said he left for Delhi over a week ago and never returned. There's been no communication between uncle and nephew since".
"Well have you searched his place?" asked Preet.
"His uncle wouldn't give us consent. Their residence is right above the shop and he said we were tainting his reputation and scaring his customers away. And unfortunately I don't have enough evidence against the guy to get a search warrant", explained Inspector Khan. "To top it all off, Rajveer came down to the station, but he failed to ID any of thugs that broke into his place in our book of mug shots. My guess is that they were some random thugs who were paid in cash, half before the job and half after. They probably had no idea who they were dealing with. I'm afraid we've hit a dead end".
"What do you mean you've hit a dead end?!" Cried Preet. "How the hell are we supposed to find Meher?!"
"Calm down Mr. Juneja", said Inspector Khan. "I said my investigation has hit a dead end, I didn't say I was giving up. What about you? Have you heard anything from Meher or Mr. Kashyap?"
"If I had I would have called you", said Preet. "Besides, I doubt Viren is going to call me and demand a ransom for Meher, when she is the prize".
"Well, in that case, let's just hope someone spots her", sighed Inspector Khan. "Or that whoever has her makes a mistake".
"Damn it Meher!" cried Preet, as he threw his phone to one side in frustration. "Where the hell are you?"
Meanwhile...
Gagged and with her hands bound together before her, Meher was being led into a dimly lit room, by 3 men she didn't recognize. It was the 4th location they had brought her to since kidnapping her.
"Get in here!" cried the 1st man, as she struggled under his grip.
"I don't get it. When is this guy going to come and collect her?" Complained the 2nd man. "Why don't you call him already?"
"I can't", said the 3rd man. "He contacts us, we don't know how to contact him".
"Yeah well...he better pay us extra for this job. I mean she's a royal pain", said the 1st goon. He pushed Meher down into a corner, then pulled out a rope from his back pocket. He was about to bend down and tie her feet together, when she kicked him as hard as she could.
"Ugh!" He cried, as he instinctively raised his hand to hit her in response.
"No!" said his companion. "We're not supposed to touch her remember".
"But the little bitch kicked me!" protested the goon. "And she bit me earlier too, when I was putting the gag on her mouth!"
"Women!" The 2nd man chuckled. "Even when they're pissed off are nothing to handle, if you know what you're doing. "Here, let me show you how it's done".
As he bent down before her, Meher slapped him on the mouth as hard as she could, with her bound fists. It caught him off guard and he went staggering backwards. She then kicked him in the shins and he screamed and rolled about in pain. She kicked him hard in the leg again, and started pounding him with her fists.
"Wow. You really showed us how to handle her", laughed the other 2 goons.
"Get her off me you idiots!" Cried the man.
Both men came forward, one grabbing Meher by the arms and the other by her legs. "Look princess", said one of them, as he looked her squarely in the eye, then began to tie her feet together. "Someone paid us real good money to bring you here. It's nothing personal just business. Now I admire your tenacity, but it's 3 of us against just one of you. I'm sure you wouldn't want us to deliver damaged goods to our client. I suggest you cooperate, and that way no one will get hurt, if you know what I mean".
Meher glared back angrily at him. Just then his phone rang.
"It's about time you called", he said. "We're having a hell of a time keeping her down. She's a fiesty creature I tell you. She keeps trying to run away. Yeah...yeah...we'll be here. Just make sure you have our money". He hung up the phone then turned to face his companions. "He's on his way. In the meantime, I'm starving. Let's go get something to eat".
"What about her?" asked one of the other men.
"She can get her own dinner", he laughed.
"No, I mean what should we do about her?" The other man asked.
"She's all tied up. Trust me she isn't going anywhere", his companion replied.
Meher watched quietly as the 3 men abandoned her, locking the door behind them as they left. As soon as she was sure she could no longer hear their voices, she squinted her eyes and scanned the tiny darkened room for anything that she could use to break free of her ties. But she found nothing. She struggled against her bindings, but they refused to budge.
Ugh! She screamed in her head. How could this be happening to me? Who could have hired these men? Only one name came to mind. Viren! This had to be his doing! The snake! Her family had been right. It had been stupid of her to come back to Mumbai. But not in her wildest imagination had she ever thought that he would stoop to doing something so low. But then again...why not? If he could hit Preet with a car then why not this? Thank God Preet hadn't gone over to Rajveer's place with her, otherwise he would have been hurt or kidnapped too. He must be going crazy with worry. I'm so sorry Preet. I'm so sorry. She scrunched up in her corner and began to cry, until exhaustion finally took over and she succumbed to sleep.
How long she slept, Meher wasn't sure, but it was voices coming from the other side of the door that woke her. Using the wall as a brace, Meher managed to prop herself into an upright position. She then hopped over to the door as noiselessly as she could, and positioned herself with her back to the door.
"She's right in here", a goon was saying. As soon as he took a step in through the door, Meher backed into it pushing it shut with her weight. It closed on the goon's arm. He screamed in agony, followed by a tirade of curses. Meher continued to push the door on his arm again and again, until a greater force on the other end forced it open completely, causing both her and the goon to tumble onto the floor.
Meher looked up to see the other goons rush in to help their companion, followed by 2 other men, who were wearing baseball caps and handkerchiefs on their faces. One of them walked towards Meher clapping his hands. Amusement flickered in his eyes.
"Not bad", he said. "Not bad at all".
Despite his voice being muffled behind his disguise, Meher recognized it right away as being Viren's.
"I think she broke my arm", whimpered the man on the floor.
"Occupational hazard I suppose", Viren said nonchalantly.
"Hey...what about our money?" One of the goons asked him.
Viren nodded towards the other masked man, who motioned for the 3 goons to follow him for their payment. When he was sure they were alone, he came and kneeled before Meher, and pulled his handkerchief down so she could see his face.
"Hi honey...I'm home", he grinned. "Here let me help you out of that". He reached out and undid Meher's gag.
"You...you...you fiend!" Meher spat the words at him. "How dare you have me held here like a caged animal!" She raised her hands to hit him, but Viren caught her by the wrists and twisted them causing her to gasp in pain.
"Na-ha!" he warned. "I wouldn't try that if I were you. I may not be as kind as those gentlemen have been".
"Let me go!" Cried Meher. She tried to draw her hands back, but Viren wouldn't let go of them.
"Tsk! Tsk! Tsk! Just look at you Meher...", he said, "...all tied up... completely at my mercy...to do whatever I want to do with you...take revenge...or entertain myself". He finally let go of her hands and fingered her bindings. "It's a shame the way those ropes are cutting into your pretty white skin". He suddenly softened his tone, and brought forward a sack. "Hey...look what I brought for you. Sandwiches. Ice cold water. I'm sure you're hungry".
"What do you want Viren?" Meher demanded.
"Isn't it obvious? It's you Meher. I want you", Viren replied. "I told you before, like it or not, you're my little goose...my key to all the golden eggs".
"And I also told you that I don't want anything to do with you or your father's money, so you had better just let me go!" said Meher.
"Stubborn aren't you", sighed Viren. He stood up and began to pace back and forth in front of her. "Well then...let's go over this again. I need money. Money that was mine until my old man went nuts and decided to cheat me out of my inheritance. I need it, not only to survive, but to get some not so nice people off my back. People who will not shy away from hurting me if I fail to deliver what I owe them. I'm running out of resources. And I'm sick and tired of hiding and constantly looking over my shoulder like a scared rabbit".
Viren scowled as he watched Meher roll her eyes. "You're enjoying this aren't you?" he said accusingly.
"Enjoying what?" said Meher.
"My humiliation!" cried Viren. "Bringing me down! You're enjoying the fact that everything I expected in life was taken away from me! It's all entertainment to you, isn't it?!"
"No...I...", said Meher.
"Well, you may think this is funny Meher Maan", interrupted Viren. "But I swear I'm going to get everything back. Everything that is rightfully mine. And you're going to help me".
"But Mr. Bedi said I didn't really inherit anything", protested Meher. "In fact he said the only way to get your inheritance back was if we..."
"Got married", said Viren. "Exactly! That's exactly what we're going to do within the next 48 hours".
"You're crazy!" cried Meher. "I'll never marry you!"
"Of course you will", smiled Viren. "Just think of it Meher. You and me...rolling in gold...enjoying the good life".
Meher didn't look convinced.
"Okay look, we don't have to stay together forever", said Viren. "Just be married long enough for me to get my money. You'll be rewarded handsomely if you cooperate. The alternative of course would not be a pretty one. I mean, if you don't care what my creditors will do to me...I'll also leave you here to rot. I'm sure my accomplices, who brought you here, would love to have their way with you".
Meher shot Viren a disgusted look. Was it even possible to reason with this maniac? She wondered. "Viren, I can't marry you", she said.
"You can't or you won't?" said Viren gritting his teeth. "Look...if you're still thinking about Preet, trust me I'll make you forget about him. Just give me a chance".
"Even if I wanted to help you...I can't. I'm already married...to Preet", said Meher.
"What?!" said Viren, as first shock then anger washed over his face. "You're lying!" He took a hold of her hair, and coiled it around his hand until the heel of his hand rested harshly against her scalp. "Tell me you're lying!"
Meher bit the inside of her mouth trying to control the cry of pain that sprang to her lips. "I'm not", she whimpered.
"I thought you went to Ludhiana to get engaged. Then how? When? Tell me everything!" demanded Viren, as he tightened his hold on her hair again.
"Last night. At the mandir near Preet's building. It's over Viren", Meher said triumphantly. "I'm of no use to you anymore".
"How could you do this to me Meher?" whispered Viren. He let go of her and slumped against the wall. How could this have happened? He wondered. He had planned everything so perfectly. Covered all his tracks so carefully. He was running out of time, and there was no room for mistakes. So how could this have happened?! No...there was too much at stake for him to fail now. He had to do something!
"You had better let me go", Meher said interrupting his thoughts.
"Does Mr. Bedi know?" asked Viren.
"What?" said Meher.
"Does Mr. Bedi know?" demanded Viren.
"Um...uh...and...and...you don't know Preet. You don't think he's sitting still for even a moment, do you?" continued Meher. "He must be furious. I'm sure he's called the police. They're probably all looking for us right now. And when they find you...".
"Shut up! Just shut up!" cried Viren. His eyes darted from left to right, as if he was planning his next move. He pulled his phone out and quickly dialed a number. "Gurinder...get our friends back here. I've got another job for them to do".
"What are you up to Viren?" demanded Meher.
"You'll find out soon enough", sneered Viren.
Meher watched helplessly as Viren gave her a cold and calculating look then left her alone in the room. Alone to all sorts of horrid thoughts. Preet! Did she just put him in danger by telling Viren about their marriage?
