Chapter 7- Trekking day 5

Today the trek was to have a gradual walk over loose rocks and remnants of glacier. Taani as always kept walking right infront followed by Rey who was running behind her; he called out to Taani probably for the 50^th time. She turned and jumped on the rocks coming straight opposite him,

" Kya hai Reyansh Singhania?" asked Taani in her chirpy tone ,she seemed happy today.

Rey carefully sat on one of the rocks, "Time please! Main thak gaya hu. Yaha baito" he pointed to a rock opposite him. Taani looked at the rest of the trek who were far behind them; she took a deep breath and sat down.

"Kal raat bhar main so nai paya." complained Rey.

"Kyun?" Taani asked lovingly.

Rey looked straight at her making a scared face, "Kal tumhari bhayanak sa rotlu chehra jo dekh liya tha maine. Main kitna darr gaya pata hai??."

Taani opened her mouth as he made fun of her; she picked some pebbles from the ground and started throwing them on him. He laughed and blocked himself from getting hurt. Taani stopped, feeling embarrassed for crying like that infront of him. She stared at the flowing water avoiding the awkward silence between them.

Rey inhaled and continued, "Taani I guess tume apne ghar call karke baat kar leni chaiye"

Taani immediatetly looked up at Rey, "Rey tum bhi na! Kal tumhi ne toh kaha tha, ki hum yaha sirf 2 aur din ke liye hai. Uske badh main ghar hi toh jaungi. Roz mummy daddyji, mummy daddyji hi toh karna hai. aur tum itna tension mat lo. Daddyji thoda gussa honge, datenge , taane marenge, aur phir kya? Ek na ek din toh maaf hi karenge na? apne baccho se koi kitne din gussa reh sakta hai?"

Rey stared at Taani trying to figure out if she actually means what she's saying or trying to cover up her fear. She continued, "Aur daddyji ki toh main favorite bacchi hu. Mujse wo kabhi zyada time gussa nai reh sakte."

She got up and hopped from one rock to other before he would start his talks again. Rey stood up staring at her, she was so confident about her dad forgiving her. What if she goes wrong? Is she so strong to take all that in? She would definitely be hurt, More hurt because she's not prepared for the consequences.

After walking a few hours they reached to their trekking spot, Taani had never tried rafting ever in her life, she looked at the water current which was rough. She immediately had Goosebumps, not out of fear but because she was thrilled and excited.

Rey glanced at Taani and the other girls who looked all scared but Taani was only one who was rubbing her palms out of excitement. He smiled; she was so unlike other girls, such a sport!!! Once they wore the safety jackets and were divided in teams, they all squealed in their respective boats as it was so cold. Taani was sitting right infront, followed by Rey and rest of the team. As much as Taani was pretending to be all confident and excited, deep down in her heart she was nervous as hell. She shut her eyes several times and gulped. Taking a deep breath in, she turned and looked at Rey.

He smiled back at her, "Kya hua ballika vadhu?? Darr gai kya??" he asked mischievously.

"Darr?? Wo kya hota hai?" replied Taani who was faking all confidence.

Rey raised his eyebrows, "you know you can be real with me right? agar darr lag raha hai toh main agey bait jata hu and you can sit here."

Taani bite her lower lip with her upper lip, it was true that she was scared and nervous. She looked at Rey and then at others and immediately nodded her head and they switched places. Sitting behind him she could see his side face, how come he could see her nervous side when she was hiding it? She smiled as she stared at him for few minutes.

Once everyone got their rafts floating down the stream, they hit their first set of rapids. Waves were crashing and cold water was spilling in as the journeyed down the river. Rey yelled and screamed out of excitement. Their boat swayed left and right and at times kept crashing into the rocks. They were having water fights and races with the other groups, splashing their paddles in the water at them, and having a good time.

But before they knew it, paddling got harder as the waves got bigger. At this time staying in the boat was one's own personal task. The boat was spinning in circles and a mass confusion struck their raft. Taani's paddle was in the water already and she was struggling to balance herself, she nervously looked at her team members.

Worried she looked at Rey who was paddling harder, she yelled "Rey!! mera paddle paani mein ghir gaya"

Although they were just 6-7 of them in the boat but it was so chaotic and noisy, that no one could hear what the other person was saying. She waited for him to say something, but he just kept paddling. She called out to him 2-3 times but all in vain. She gulped and tried to catch hold of her floating paddle, but it seemed like luck was not in Taani's favor as a strong wave crashed their boat causing Taani to lose her balance completely. Before she could even realize it Taani was in the water struggling between the waves.

Rey threw his paddle inside the boat and stretched his hand and yelled something that she couldn't hear. All she could hear was sound of the waves crashing into each other. She could barely see anyone,just water water and water. She hit her hands in the water trying to swim but the water current was way to strong and rough.

She tried to look around trying to catch hold of something that could help her stay at one place, but she could feel nothing except for ice cold water. It had been hardly 10 mins for her in the water but she felt she was losing it already. Her eyesight was going blurry and dark, she couldn't figure out was it because of the freezing water or coz she was freaking scared.

Sitting inside the boat, Rey kept yelling at Taani and other team members, he shouted on top of his voice for her to hold his hand. It was freezing cold there but Rey was sweating, his skin got pale as he saw Taani struggling to swim. Although she had her lifejacket on and he knew she wouldn't drown, even then he was nervous as hell.

As they all paddled harder the boat reached closer to Taani and Rey eventually pulled Taani out of the water.

Once the chaos subsided, they paddled their way near the bank of the river. Taani was still half unconscious. Rey carried her; she wrapped her arms around his neck and caught his collar tight as she felt secure and safe. He carefully walked and made her lie down. She was trembling; he immediately took her helmet and life jacket off. The whole crowd surrounded around them, tensed Rey looked at all of them and yelled,

"Move!! She needs fresh air"

They all moved away surprised seeing Rey's loud reaction. They had all seen his funny, relaxed side earlier. No one had ever imagined Rey could speak to anyone in that high tone.

He looked at Taani again and started rubbing her palms and cheeks. Although Taani was unconscious but it was Rey who was running out of breath. He turned Taani's head to the side, allowing the water to drain out from her mouth and nose. But it didn't work so He turned her head back to the center.

"I guess she needs a mouth to mouth respiration" Suggested the guide.

Rey looked at Taani, would it be okay with her if he does that? It was not that he was kissing her or anything but how would she react to that? He patted her cheeks and tried to wake her up. But as expected she didn't respond. He shut his eyes and exhaled. Having no other option left, he decided that he should take the guide's advice.

He moved away the strands of wet hair which were on her face and gulped as he slowly moved closer to her face. He glanced at her, he's lips were just few cm's away from hers, he looked at her eyes, her lips that were still trembling, drops of water from his hair were dripping on her face and smoothly sliding down her cheek. He put his hand behind her neck and raised her head a little as he moved even closer to her. He pinched her nose, such his eyes and after four strong breaths into her mouth, he put his ear near her mouth for any breathing movement.

He looked at Taani, it was the first time he touched her skin in that way. He was feeling ticklish and started breathing faster. He kept shifting his eyes from her lips to her eyes. He knew he wasn't supposed to feel like that, so he shut his eyes and took a deep breath. As he was trying to fight this feeling, Taani started coughing and Rey immediately forgot what he was feeling and glanced at her as she faintly opened her eyes.

Rey couldn't help but smile at her, Taani kept looking at him all confused as he was so close to her face; her head was feeling heavy but the fact that Rey was close to her made her relax. Once again Rey proved that if he is around nothing can ever go wrong with her. She exhaled and then smiled at Rey who was just few cm away from her face.

Rey without wasting another second pulled her into a hug; Taani caught his arms as she struggled to sit. She couldn't speak much but her heartbeats were doing all the talking. In his arms she was trying to figure out why it was beating so damn fast when Rey broke the hug and held her arms,

"Tu thik toh hai na? Kya zaroorat thi paani mein khudne ki??Khud ko mermaid samaj rakha hai kya?"

Taani started shivering as she looked at him not knowing how to explain what happened. Rey sat beside's her and wrapped his arms around and rubbed her hands trying to keep her warm. As he did that Taani couldn't help but stare at him.More than the cold weather it was his touch that was making her shiver. He kept grumbling and complaining but Taani did nothing but stare.

" Chalo, tum jake change karlo. Or else tum bimaar pad jaogi" he said as he got up.

Taani immediately got up and went inside the small tent to change. As soon as she walked out, a girl popped infront of her with a cup of hot tea.

"Thanks" Taani said as she smiled and took it.

"I must say Taani, Reyansh does care a lot about you. Abhi wo waha sabse mafi manng raha hai"

"Maafi??" asked confused Taani.

"Yeah!! Chilla diya tha usne sabpe! Itna tensed tha tumhara wajah se ki bichara lost his temper. But look at him now!! Sabse personally jake apologize kar raha hai."

Taani stared at Rey as the girl spoke, "He's such a gentleman, tumhe mouth to mouth respiration dene se pehle bhi kitna hesitate kar raha tha."

Taani spilled out the tea from her mouth and started coughing, "What?? Kya kaha tumne??" she asked in disbelief.

The girl glanced at Taani, "I mean tum unconscious thi and respond nai kar rahi thi, so Reyansh ne tumhe.."

The girl explained the whole situation to her. Taani tugged her hair behind and stared at Rey, He was that close to me? She started imagining how he must have done it to her and blushed. She took another sip of her tea and smiled as she looked at Rey again. What was happening to her? A guy came so close to her, wasn't she suppose to feel offended and create a scene about it? But here she was, standing in one corner, all blushing and smiling for what happened.
