Part 4

It has just been a day since Pragya left and he felt like its been a lifetime. Nothing felt good, everything feels just so empty. Maybe this is the feeling of being in love and not knowing if your love is reciprocated. He needed to find out about Pragya's feelings and the only way to do that was by staying near her. With that in mind he fell into deep slumber.

Next morning

He got up earlier than usual and headed up to daadi. "Are Abhi, kya hua beta? Itni subah Subah?" "Haan wo daadi kuch baat karni thi." Abhi continued after daadi nodded, "Daadi main soch raha tha ke shaadi tak main bhi Pragya je ghar hi ruk jau. Wo akele kab tak sambhalegi." He looked up to see daadi looking at him with a teasing look and said, "Mujhe to pehle hi pata Tha ke to Pragya ke bina reh hi nahi payega." And then she laughed. Abhi just looked at her smiling sheepishly and murmured "Aap se baat hi karna bekaar hai daadi." And left the room while daadi was still laughing.

After four hour he was standing inside Kumkum Bhagya Marriage Hall ordering people around as to how they must work. He was having the time of his life. Firstly the look on Pragya's face every time he sees her. It is as if she is checking if she is dreaming. It was endearing. He just wanted to crush her to himself and never ever let go but there was still time for that. He will as soon as Bulbul is married though. He won't wait for another second then.
Another reason for his happiness was Sarla aunty, no, Sarla maa. She was so welcoming that he felt as if he was her own, that too her favourite one and that made his heart soar. Then there was Rockstar daadi. He hadn't seen a woman her age behave like she did. It was as if she was getting younger every second of her life. She laughed with him, pulled Pragya's leg and even listened to his songs. How had he been so blind to this family's love all this time? He had missed out on so much, but no more.
One thing that hurt was that none of Pragya's siblings were so welcoming. Bulbul had left the room the moment he entered the house and the look she gave him before leaving made him feel like a criminal who had broke into her house. Puneet not only refused to work with him but said that if he even enters the kitchen he himself will make sure it was the last thing he ever did. Even Purvi was slightly hostile to him. He should have guessed that Bulbul must have told them. What hurt the most was they refused to acknowledge him as Jeeju anymore. Puneet had said that to his face. But he was hoping that as soon as things get better between him and Pragya, they too will come around.

10 days later

Today is the Sangeet ceremony and Abhi was head of decoration. Not that he had much to do but he wanted to so Pragya sent him out to check on some flowers that she had ordered for. He was very happy these days. Pragya was getting more and more comfortable with him and didn't look like a scared little lamb. She was happy with whatever he did for her. He now knew what she liked.. She wasn't into anything exquisite. All she wanted was a flower, a chocolate or even a book. He made sure he gave her at least two of them every day. The glee on her face gave him hope that when he confesses to her after Bulbul's wedding reception she will say yes. And then every second for the rest of his life he would show how much he means it.
He was standing at the flower shop when someone grabbed him by his collar and dragged him into a little by-lane. He thought it is some crazy fan and was about to call his driver when he felt a punch on his right cheek and then on his abdomen. He looked up to see a livid Purab looking at him and ready to throw another punch at him when he held his arm. "Purab listen.. I know you are angry.." He felt another punch on his left cheek and then Purab said, "Damn right, I am angry you bas***d. You are participating in her wedding. You are practically paying for it!! I will kill you Abhi!!" He yelled into his face and as he was about to kick him Abhi hit him back and he fell back on the ground on his stomach. Abhi took the opportunity and sat on top of him. "You need to listen Purab, I swear I tried talking her out of it but she is adamant on this. Please I did not want this." "Of course she is. You and your sister would have thrown her sister out of your house and her mother would have died. My Bulbul is not an insensitive and selfish like you. Let me go and I will tell you how much damage you have done. And if you think that I am going to marry Aliya after this then you are sadly mistaken Mr. Mehra. I'd kill myself before tying a knot with a woman other than my Bulbul, you get that?!" Abhi was still trying to restrain him so he would just listen to him. "I was not even expecting that Purab. I know now that you love Bulbul and only Bulbul has any place in your heart. So please believe me when I say that I tried to talk to Bulbul but she just won't listen." Hearing this Purab went still. Abhi got off of him as he knew he would not hit him now. Purab didn't even move. He just lied there for a moment and then started crying his heart out. When his cries became loud shrieks Abhi picked him from the floor and tried to hug him when Purab pushed him and looked at him and let out an empty laugh, "You know what, I was destined to be alone else I would not have messed it up. She was, is the best thing that happened to me and I managed to screw, not just her but her entire family over and over again. My Bulbul will belong to someone else now and there is not a bloody thing I can do about it." He said and let out a cry and then looked up at Abhi and said, "It is all because of you and your sister Abhi. Are you happy now. I am ruined thanks to you." Abhi looked up at him guiltily and said, "I know Purab but I didn't do it on purpose. You are like a brother to me.." As soon as Abhi said that he felt a slap on his already swollen cheek. "Don't you dare say that I mean something to you. You are not the man I looked up to and you never will be anymore. I hate you Abhishek Mehra and I wish that whatever is happening to me happens to you. You will never get your love Abhi. You will pine for her and cry everyday for her but she will never be yours. You will feel the pain of seeing hatred in the eyes of the woman you love and only then will you understand what I am going through right now. She will be right in front of your eyes but you will not be able to reach out to her as she will never let you. If my love for Bulbul was true then my words will be too. If my Bulbul ever loved me then every word from my mouth will come true Abhishek Mehra and when they do I will be right in front of you watching you getting destroyed." And then he left leaving a broken and very scared Abhi behind.
Abhi entered the house and saw Pragya run towards him, "Oh my God! What happened? Are you ok?!" He looked at her and all he could hear were Purab's words. He just looked at her af if in a trance as she dragged him to her bedroom and got the first aid kit while the rest of the family followed closely behind. Pragya picked up a cotton ball, dipped it in anti septic and started cleaning the blood around his mouth. After the first Aid she called the doctor and asked him to come to her place. Then she asked him what happened. He told her he got into a street brawl with a local who didn't know him. Everyone looked convinced except for Pragya and Bulbul. It was as if the Arora sisters knew their beloveds all too much to not know what really happened but decided to stay mum.
At night after getting a good head champi from Sarla maa and drinking a glass of haldi milk, that tasted vile, Abhi finally retired to bed but as soon as Pragya was about to sleep on the floor he asked her to sleep on the bed. She was surprised at first but assumed he was slightly shaken by the fight she relented. As soon as she sat on the bed Abhi put his head on her lap and took her hand. Before Pragya could protest he was fast asleep, or so he pretended. Pragya wanted to have this memory with her so she let him. She straightened a pillow behind her and caressed his hair. Soon tiredness took over and she slept, though very uncomfortably but there was a certain tranquillity in her heart that gave way to the most peaceful slumber. But Abhi was not able to sleep. As soon as he felt that Pragya's asleep he turned in her lap and held her hand. He looked at her intently as if asking her not to leave him. He spent the entire night praying holding her hand. He could not possibly live with her hating him and what Purab said today shook him to the core. He held on to her hand as if his life depended on it.

oh wow! i am a bit scared of this purab! wonder what he will do. his pain was really exquisitely expressed, thank you for giving us that scene. he deserves the chance to express his frustrations on abhi and aaliya, and to give abhi back some of that casual violence he so easily doles out 😡

i am intrigued that pragya's sibs are giving abhi the cold shoulder. no less than he deserves! would be nice to see him earn a place as jiju, hope there will be time in the story for that.

loved the abhigya moments at the end of this chapter. my heart is thundering in fear for abhi, what if someone misleads pragya tomorrow and this memory has to last him for ages until they can fix their new problems 😔

Purab won't be doing anything.. He isn't capable of hurting anyone for his sadistic pleasure.. But he needed to vent out. So this..
Abhi's behaviour is the stimulus for all of this.. Pragya's siblings were very attached to her and any harm to her causes them equivalent pain.. He has to earn his place as their Jeeju..
