Breath of Fresh Air

CHAPTER 6

It was 5 in the morning. He had the habit of waking up early in Mumbai. He decided to warm up for the day and what better than jogging to freshen up the mind and the body. He halted at Ruhi's door. Through the flowing curtains he saw the most mesmerising sight, his daughter was sleeping peacefully in Ishita's embrace. Her head rested on Ishita's right arm, her arms softly rested on Ishita's chest while Ishita's left hand bear-hugged Ruhi.

A soft smile played on his lips as he jogged his way through the society garden. After spending a day with his family and Ishita, he knew his daughter was raised in the perfect environment and his daughter had chosen the best mother for herself. It was him who didn't fit in this perfect family, the odd one out. The guilt that he had harboured all these years of not being able to give Ruhi the mother she deserves was finally off his chest.

At the breakfast table he informed his mother that he would be dropping Ruhi to school. Ruhi got all excited, she wanted her friends to meet her father.

"arre yeh toh changi gal ki hai tuney puttar." Mrs Bhalla said "Ishita tu phir sidhe hi nikal liyo"

"agar aap logo ko problem na ho toh mai Ishita ko bhi drop kar sakta hu, mere office ke raaste hi aata hai iska clinic, bina baat ke do gaadiyon ka petrol kyu waste karna"

Everyone turned to look at Raman as if he had just mentioned about the 8^th wonder "kya hai" he said, irritated "muh bandh karo tumlog, makkhi ghus jayega"

"oye theek hai puttar, teeno saath hi chale jao" Mr Bhalla was the first one to recover from the shock.

Raman saw Ishita turn to her left and whisper something to Romi. Romi nodded and said "aap chinta na karo". He was curious to know what they were talking about and when did Romi learn to talk so responsibly. Everyone has changed in his family and he realised he could never cover the gap all these years had created. His place was now taken over by Ishita. He suddenly realised that it was not just Ruhi who needed her but the entire family depended on her, he was a stranger in his own family. He felt something bitter cross his mind; he won't let that Ishita play with his mind like she does with his family. With that he rose from his seat "Main gadi nikalta hun"

At the parking:

Raman saw a flash of something come across his car, opened his passenger door and sat on the seat as if the entire car belonged to him

"Ruhi ke papa ho na tum?"

Raman realised his mouth was open all the while and quickly closed it "ha, par tu kaun hai"

"mere papa tumse zyada handsome hai, Ruhi toh haar gayi, mere papa tall, fair and handsome hai aur mere papa ki toh mooche bhi hai, pata hai patti kya kehti hai? Patti kehti hai ki jin papao ke mooch nehi hoti woh mummy dikhte hai, hehehe...hahaha...hohoho... " he was laughing his heart out at Raman's expenses.

Raman saw red infront of his eyes, he could deal with everything, even his mooch but not a word about his height, he looked at the horribly bad child infront of him and tried to bring out the most frightening expression, but the child simply didn't care. He looked back with an equally dangerous expression that frightened Raman instead. Raman said "abbe tinku, dedh footiya, hai kaun tu bey, apne size ki baat kiya kar samjha, daadi amma jaisi baat kiya toh yeh jitney chocolate se sadey huye daant dikha raha hai na sab nikal dunga"

To Raman's bad luck, Ishita and Ruhi turned up that very moment and they had heard only half of the conversation. They rushed to the back seat "aap kaise insaan hai, aise kaise baat kar sakte hai aap ek bacche se" the boy now held a help me' expression and looked at Raman wth teary eyes. Raman was shocked to see the change in experession

"Arre tumhe nehi pata yeh kya bol raha tha..."he tried to explain

"bas mujhe nehi sunna" she said "Arre mera baccha nehi rote Shravu" she tried to remove the tearsoff shravan's face, from the back seat.

Raman looked at Ruhi and she gave her a I-am-helpless' look

"fine, kuch mat sunna, bat ab iss dedh footiya ko bolo ki meri gadi se utre aur apne fair and handsome papa ke gadi mein baithe jaake" Raman roared

"you are so rude, aaphi ne bola tha ki lift denge haemin, aur shravu toh Ruhi ke school mein hi padhta hai, iske papa bahar gaye hai toh yeh hamare saath hi jayega"

"oh toh poore society mein kiske ghar mein kya ho raha hai sab pata hai tumhe ha?"

"kuch bhi, yeh mere ghar ka maaamla hai, society ka nehi, iske papa yani mere jiju bahar gaye hai, aaka aur isko hamare ghar drop karke"

Raman murmured "mujhe toh pehle hi shak ho gaya tha ki yeh pagal hai, ab toh confirm hai pura khandaan hi pagal hai, isse toh daanto ka nehi pagalo ka hospital kholna chahiye tha"

"kuch bola aapne"

"arre nehi nehi, meri itni aukaad kaha ki tumhe aur is tinku ko kuch bolu"

Shravu gave him a mean smirk and said "toh jaldi chalo, der ho rahi hai mujhe school ke liye"

Raman was shocked to notice that the mean Shravu was actually Ruhi's best friend. These madrasis were spoiling his daughter. He needs to keep an eye on this tinku, he was way too clever and his daughter was innocent. Agle saal ruhi ko bolunga ki isse rakhi baandh de, he decided.

They dropped Ruhi and Shravu to their school. Ishita kissed each one of them goodbye.

"chaliye bhi ab kiska intezaar kar rahe hai?" Ishita asked

"oh hello!! driver dikhta hu mai tumhe? Aage aake baitho"

Ishita moved to the passenger seat and Raman started the car. The silence in the car wasn't comfortable for either of them

"boliye"

"kya?"

"wahi joh bolne ke liye lift dene ka kasht kar rahe hai aap mujhe"

She knew? She knew that I wanted to talk to her "Romi se kya baat kar rahi thi table pe?"

"kya? Aapko yeh puchna tha?" she looked at him as if he had suddenly grown horns on his head

"ha, pehle yeh batao, baad ki baat baad mein dekhenge" yes he was dying to know what she said to Romi, it was strange that he was so interested in their talk.

"aur yaha mujhe laga ki aaapko Ruhi ke bare mein baat karni thi. Anyways mai Romi ko bol rahi thi ki Ruhi ko school se pickup kar le, mai gadi nehi laayi na aaj"

Oh, he heaved a sigh, to yeh baat thi aur mai kya kya soch raha tha. She cares so much for Ruhi, maine kyu nehi socha ki Ruhi wapas kaise ayegi "ha Ruhi ke bare mein hi baat karni thi..."

"good, kyuki mujhe bhi Ruhi ke bare me boht kuch puchna aur batana tha aapko"

"dekho Ruhi ka itne saal khayal Rakhne ke liye mera tumhe har thankyou kam parega.."

"thankyou? Thankyou toh mujhe aapko kehna chahiye kyuki Ruhi ko jitni meri zarurat hau na us se kayi zyada mujhe uski zarurat hai, uske bagair toh shayad zinda bhi nehi hoti mai aaj" Raman stopped the car and looked at her, he had expected many replies but not this one "usne ne meri zindagi ko jeene layak banaya... kya hua? Aap ruk kyu gaye"

"tumhara clinic aa gaya" he said

"ayoo murgan!! but meri asli baat hi toh reh gayi hai"

"koi baat nehi saam ko baat karenge"

"sham ko kaise?"

"chaat pe aa jaana"

"ok, sham ko milte hai phir" and she waved him goodbye with a small smile.

He was shocked to realise that the corner of his lips had curved upward too. He quickly schooled his expression and drove away.
