Chapter 10: The one with the reality check slap
Chapter Dedication: -Ms.Rocker- and Gunseerat
(unedited, there will be a lot of mistakes)
They were standing in front of the lake. Randhir, behind Sanyukta, his hands on her hips. It was shady, dark and cold- almost cold. The tall cedar trees cast their reflection on the water on the west side of the lake making a dark silhouette against the blue. The vibrant green grass sat along the border occupied by daisies. The whole surface make a gentle, waving notion as the breeze passed by.
"Its a beautiful place." Sanyukta told Randhir. "I can keep looking at it all day."
"The thing I want to keep looking at is something entirely different."
Sanyukta smiled. "U flirting with me?"
"Not yet." Randhir chuckled. He made Sanyukta turn around and kissed the crown of her head. "U are beautiful." Randhir whispered touching her cheek. "you are so goddamn beautiful."
Looking up at Randhir's charcoal black eyes, sanyukta smiled.
Randhir smiled back. "The Lake is soft and still. its depth is eternal...just like your eyes"
Sanyukta giggled, wanting the time to stand still. Never in her life she felt so girl, but she dint even care. Randhir was in front of her, smiling. What else she needed?
As both stared into each other's eyes, somewhere in a distant, a bell began to ring.
Randhir took Sanyukta's wrist and brought her closer pressing his forehead against hers. But something wasnt right. His face grew hazy at the edges dissolving into the background. When Randhir touched her face, sanyukta hardly felt it, Worse she felt herself pulling away from him like a piece of tape peeling back from the glass.
"Randhir?!" Sanyukta gasped trying to get hold of him but something pulled her out of her dream.
Sanyukta was yanked awake by the sound of her cell phone ringing.
Caught with one foot still in the dream, she tugged the pillow over her head trying to block out the voice. But the phone rang and rang.
With a grown, she reached over the side of the bed trying to locate her phone. Her hand bumped the picture frame on the nightstand making it fall on the ground.
"Shit." She grunted reaching an arm over the opposite side and found her cell on the table.
"yes?" She mumbled with a wide yawn, leaving her eyes shut.
"Sanyukta? Are you still sleeping?"
Randhir's voice brought a smile on Sanyukta's face.
"Hmm dreaming." She replied dreamily.
"About what?"
"you."
"What?!"
Suddenly Sanyukta was fully awake. She sat up straight in bed. "oh nothing! Unicorns!"
Randhir chuckled. "What are unicorns doing in your dream?"
Sanyukta knocked the heel of her hand against her forehead a few times. "Uh, I dont know they just flew in. Whats up?"
"I called to tell you that I'm here. In costa town with Danny."
"What? Why?"
"To meet sassy. I told you yesterda dint I?"
Sanyukta nodded remembering yesterday's night talk when Randhir told her he'll be going to costa town. He even asked her if she wanted to accompany him but Sanyukta refused. It was Sunday and she wanted a day off. Apparently carrying two babies in your tummy can be pretty tiring. Plus the town was two hours ride from here and Sanyukta wasnt sure if she could spend that much hours in a car. "U did, I'm sorry I forgot."
"Its ok really."
Sanyukta heard some mumbling from the background. "Is that danny?"
"yup!"
"Say hi to him from me."
An incoherent voices mumbled in the background followed by danny's soft laugh. "I love you to greendoll."
Sanyukta chuckled then cleared her throat. "Um Randhir, do u happen to have a.. um, a lake house or something?"
"No, why u asking?"
"Nothing just like that."
"U wanna go to a place like that?"
Sanyukta sighed. "No.. I was just curious. Alright then have fun you guys."
She snapped the phone shut and slid deeper into her bed, a yawn escaping her lips. She pictured Randhir's black eyes and his glittering smile and a grin spread all over her face. "Damn it!" Sanyukta laughed, a blush founding its way up her cheek. "U are so goddamn romantic in dreams. Why cant u act like that in real life?"
After thrashing around in the bed for several minutes, she gave up trying to get comfortable. The truth was as long as Randhir was on her mind, sleep was out of the question.
With a defeated sigh, Sanyukta pulled herself into the sitting position ramming a pillow behind her neck trying to get comfortable. her gaze shifting towards Kaustuki's vacant bed.
Kaustuki had gone to her hometown to meet her sick mom 4 days back and Sanyukta missed her already. There was another reason too she wanted kaustuki back. As long as Kaustuki was out, Vidushi was left in charge for catering Sanyukta's need and she wasnt sure if she liked it. Vidushi could be sweet but at the same time irritating. After all, no one can replace one's best friend.
Sending a quick msg to kaustuki, Sanyukta walked towards her wardrobe, biting her fingernail as she studied her dresses. In the end she decided to wear a black lace pant and a stretchable blue shirt.
After taking a long and luxurious bath, she zipped into her dress and scrutinized herself in the mirror. She looked at her tummy and a smile spread all over her face. She touched it. "oh swetdums." She whispered. "Please come out fast! Mamma cant wait to see you guys. Just dont hurt me much ok? I love you both."
Sanyukta's cell chirped and she looked at the reflection of her cell in the mirror.
one unread message from Kaustuki:
Wats up? Mom is alright though she is having a nervous breakdown right now. She blames my bad marks on her parenting skills so going to have a mom-daughter talk. Wish me luck.
Sanyukta laughed and keyed in a response. After closing her cupboard and giving her tummy one last look, she climbed into her bed. She wasn't exhausted, she was just tired. While staring into space, she felt an empty gnawing feeling in her stomach.
"oh I'm so hungry, I should better go-"
The door jerked open and in walked Vidushi with two cups of coffee in her hand. "Hi!"
Sanyukta expelled a luxirious sigh. "oh thanks! I was hungry."
Sanyukta sat in sitting position. "Thanks for the coffee." She clasped the cup between her hands as the warmth from the coffee leached into the air.
"oh its ok" Vidushi smiled.
"Can do me a favor and close the window?"
Vidushi raised her eyebrow inquiringly.
"I'm feeling cold." Sanyukta explained.
"Sure."
After closing the window , Vidushi plopped down into her chair and leaned forward. "U know I had a friend who was just your age when she got pregnant."
Sanyukta scratched her forehead. "why are u telling me this?"
"Just trying to make a conversation."
"U don't have to."
Vidushi ignored her continued. "Anyways, her name is Taisha shenoy and she gave birth to a beautiful girl Trinity."
"Thats so sweet." Sanyukta smiled, taking a sip of her coffee. "The name is good, Plus it starts with 'T' So both of their initials will be TS. She's lucky."
"Well to be honest I feel sorry for her."
"Give it a rest, u feel sorry for anyone who's happy."
Vidushi gave her a sly look, "There is actually a reason. Its just i think she could have achieved so much in her life, u know? She was a straight A student and her dream was to become a doctor and she even got admission in a really good college. But her whole world came crashing down."
"What do u mean?"
"Well after the baby were born, she had to drop out of college."
Sanyukta was more confused than ever. "Why?"
Vidushi gave her an isnt-it-obvious? look, "Because she had a baby and what do u expect her to do? How in the world she could go to college leaving the baby alone? I mean, a baby needs a mother. Especially when they have no dads."
Sanyukta felt a lump in her stomach. The thought of how will she manage everything after the babies come in the real world never came to her. She felt the need to stop talking, "Um.. I'm kindda tired so-"
"And Taisha is doing what now?" Vidushi continued, "sitting at home feeding the baby when she could have done so much in her life. Plus her mom dad are searching for a groom because no one is ready to take a girl with a baby."
Suddenly Sanyukta realized she had no idea to what Randhir actually felt about her. For all she know he was just concerned about the baby. They never really talked about what will happen after the babies are out. It was like all this time they had locked the door to the future afraid to peak inside.
"She could have tried doing smthn with her life." Sanyukta reasoned.
"U dint think she tried? She did.. for few weeks. But it dint work out." Vidushi paused, to take a sip. "U will understand it when u will face all these problem. U cant leave the baby and attend college. And if u love this engineering life, u cant leave it. Plus its not like u and Randhir are together. And even if u were, he's a dad. Baby doesn't need a dad as much as it needs a mom."
"U are w-wrong." Sanyukta stammered suddenly becoming aware of the situation.
Vidushi gave out a humor-less laugh. "Fine, then tell me where will u go and how will u handle two babies? U dont know know anything about parenting. And so do Randhir. And so do I.. or anybody. Its hard, not some work anyone can do. And if u do, u will HAVE to leave college.."
Sanyukta had stopped listening to Vidushi and started listening to her inner voice which said Vidushi was right. She couldnt not relate herself to Taisha. She too was a straight A student and she wanted to do so much in her life but she ended up doing nothing. What if I have to give away everything I fought for? All the struggles I had to do, all the hearts I had to win, everything going into a pit just because m bringing two lifes into this world? And what is the guarantee that even if I do get everthing I want, the babies will get ? My family had already turned their backs on me, how am I supposed to handle two babies? It just isnt about mah future now, its about theirs too!
"Sanyukta!" Vidushi's voice brought Sanyukta out of her reverie. "I said my coffee is over, I'm going out. you wanna come?"
"No." Sanyukta whispered absentmindedly.
"Fine." Vidushi stood up, took the mug from Sanyukta's hand and started walking towards the door.
"Is she happy?" Sanyukta couldnt help but ask.
Vidushi stopped short with her back facing Sanyukta. "From the outside? yeah."
"From the inside?"
After a moment of paused, Vidushi said, "No. Life isnt a fairytale, Sanyukta."
She disappeared down the corner bt Sanyukta kept staring at the door, her thoughts racing.
The conversation felt felt like a slap in the face. A reality check slap. And the truth was, vidushi couldnt have hit an harder.
***
After past 9, Sanyukta had eaten, tied up her room and listened to some music. In the shadow corner of her mind Sanyukta hadn't managed to forget her talk with Vidushi. Her words rang in Sanyukta's ear as like she was recalling some bad dream than an actual conversation. She stared into the darkness settling around her.
The emptiness, the helplessness Sanyukta felt ached her more than anything. It would have been easier to brush of the topic if Kaustuki was here but for the first time she had no one to talk to when she needed one badly. Problems in the future at that time seemed better than the torture of emotions and dilemma she was facing right now.
Sanyukta shut her eyes and laced her quivering hand on her stomach. She wondered why life had to struck so hard sometimes, wondered why she had to hurt the people she loved, wondered who she wanted to direct her hate towards- the truth that brought a tear in her eyes or the lie that brought the smile on her face.
She swung upright on the bed and punched Kaustuki's number. The phone rang and rang but no one picked it up. She dialed Parth next and his voice mail picked up.
"Where the hell are u both when I need u!" Sanyukta shouted to no one in particular and flinged her cell onto the bed. Hot tears tumbled down her cheek and she slapped it away.
But as the clock started striking, Sanyukta came to a decision. She slipped into a coat and headed out to the computer lab.
Inside the lab she signed onto a computer and after confirming no one was watching over, she typed something she almost dreaded. Sending the copy of the article she needed to the nearest printer, she tucked it inside her coat pocket, logged off and hurried out.
This time, it was her world that came crashing down.
Sometime later, Sanyukta woke up in the dark. Cool air tingled her skin and the quite hum of a machine whispered under her.
With a defeated heave, Sanyukta pulled herself into the sitting position and blinked at the number on the clock. Just shy of two.
Remembering the hum of a machine she reached over under her pillow for her cell.
one message from Randhir.
lost track of time. Just got back.
Sanyukta debated for a moment whether to call him and ask him to meet her right now or later. He must be tired from two hours ride Sanyukta thought, Will it be ok if i call him?
The longer she thought about it the more her mind swirled and tottered with ever kind of emotions. At one point she even regretted talking to vidushi. Why did i had to talk to her or listen to her? She blamed herself. But at the back of her mind, she knew Vidushi has been right all along and she needed to talk to Randhir. And who knows maybe he can change her mind. Maybe he do have thought that far and maybe he can do make everything right again.
Knowing she had not much of an option, Sanyukta took a deep breath and dialed Randhir.
"Hello?" Randhir answered on the third ring. "Sanyukta you still awake? I thought you were asleep thats i texted you instead of calling."
"Randhir I need to talk to u."
Silence
"Is everthing ok?" Randhir asked after a moment.
Sanyukta shook her head. "yeah I just..I cant sleep so I just need to-"
"Sanyukta sleep is really important for u." Randhir cut her off. "U need to sleep we can talk later. Its not like am going away or something-"
"Randhir please." Sanyukta said injecting all the pleading that possessed her voice.
"Fine meet outside in like 10."
Deep ache swirled Sanyukta's stomach as she felt her feet carry her down the hall. She was pretty sure she could break down any min now. Selfish wasnt the feeling she was feeling. It was betrayal. For some reason Sanyukta felt like she was betraying Randhir. Letting him down. A shuddering sob escaped her and she wiped her eyes with the back of her hands trying to focus on the way of telling Randhir. Deep inside, her heart believed Randhir would possibly say something to drive all her fear away. He will be the responsible one, like he is. But another voice inside her told her she was only setting herself for disappointment.
After exactly 8 min and 34 seconds, Sanyukta stopped mid stride, and her heart dropped a few beat. Randhir in his black t-shirt and loose jeans stood in front of her, his back facing her. As if sensing Sanyukta, he turned around with a smile too sweet for comfort. "Whats up?"
Sanyukta felt the urge to run back to her room but she forced her legs to stay put. "I have to tell-"
"Wait!" Randhir stopped her, "before whatever u want to tell me, I have to give u something." He dipped into his front pocket of the jacket and extracted a blue wrapped box. "I thought I'll give it to u tomorrow, but i cant wait so.."
Sanyukta hesitantly took the box from him. "What is it?"
"open it."
Sanyukta lifted the lid. Inside was a pendant-like-locket.
"Its.. oh mi god. Its beautiful." Sanyukta breathed out.
"Can I?" Randhir pointed towards her neck.
Sanyukta nodded.
Randhir hands slid to the nape of her neck, where he fastened the chain. The locket fell on Sanyukta's skin and she fingered it gently, in awe of its importance.
Randhir said, "Its a locket. actually a gurdian angel locket. I saw a fair nearby and I and danny decided to go and take a look. There when I looked at this locket I could see your face smiling. I had to buy it."
"Randhir I-" Sanyukta broke off and blinked back a sudden display of tears. something about it filled the hallow places inside her with reassurance. When she spoke again, her voice was composed but still held a wavering note. " I don't have words that could define the beauty this locket is carrying."
Randhir tipped his head back and laughed softly. "I'm so glad u liked it. It suits u." They both stared into each other's eyes. Randhir was the first one to break the connection. "So what u wanted to tell me?"
Sanyukta swallowed, trying to force the words out. "Have you ever though about.. like what are we going to do after the babies are born?"
Randhir looked at her for a moment then burst out laughing. "Is this why you called me? In the middle of the night?" Sanyukta just blinked, not knowing how else to response. Him laughing about this was the last thing she expected. she drew a discreet step back and clutched the piece of paper in her hand.
"Well to answer your question," Randhir continued, "no i havent looked that far yet. Its nt that important and anyways what is there to think."
Sanyukta felt her spine stiffen. Tears burned at the back of her eyes but not a single drop fell. She had too much frustration and anger crashing around her that nothing else made sense. We are too juvenile and young to carry a responsibility of two childs, she realized. The air in her lungs seemed to shatter and then, just when she was about to let all her controlled emotions flee, she was speaking clearly again. She had too. "Randhir? I have decided something. For the best." She added pulling out the paper from her pocket and held it in front of her.
"Sanyukta," Randhir hesitated. "What's wrong?"
"Promise me u'll listen to me before doing anthing."
Randhir's eyes were slate black, darker than the midnight sky as he studies Sanyukta for a moment. Then he took the paper, unfolded it and started reading.
"Adoption" means the process through which the adopted child is permanently separated from his biological parents and becomes the legitimate child of his adoptive parents with all the rights, privileges and responsibilities that are attached to the relationship.

Randhir stopped reading and his confused eyes flicked up, "W-what? I d-dont understand."
Sanyukta curled her hand against her mouth. She was trembling as she raised her eyes to Randhir.
"I have decided to give the babies for adoption." she whispered.

AN:
Alright I get it. I took a lot of time to update this crappy chapter. But I only get like 1 or 2 hrs free in a day and i need to finish prison break followed by game of thrones and breaking bad.
"A Beautiful Mistake".
Their getting pregnant was not the only mistake they made. Their mistakes were the things they do, the decision they make, the way they handle everthing.. this all sums up to make their mistake beautiful.
So im sorry if you dint like the chapter because life is not a colorful picture you paint. Its always quite the opposite. And since for a girl like Sanyukta, whose dream is to become an engineer, i had to had this plot hurl its way down this road.
