Well i thought.. since it was a hat that does 'being-like' things may be it qualified as half being & half thing...😕 😆

but going by that logic many other things fit "thing-being" category in the HP world like "the monster book of monsters", "howler", "hogwarts paintings/ statues" etc etc..😆

Akash, you got it right..It is the Sorting Hat..

Let me explain..
Often within, Iam the wise..It is out very rarely, only seen during the sorting ceremony... And it is very wise.. Since the founders themselves gave brains to it..
Giving birth to everything nice..
It is mainly used in the sorting ceremony.. From there begins the journey of a wizard or a witch..I do hope it explains everything..So yeah Akash got it right..And Lumos, as to your doubt as to whether its a being or not.. The hat is primarily a thing.. But it has a kind of soul in it.. I mean it can think for itself.. So it is a part-being part-thing.. Hope you get my point..
