Raah buhaaru, pag pakhaaru, tame nihaaru ji
I await your return, wash off impurities, and see you through my heart.
Pran vaaru, baiyaa daaru, main naa haaru ji...
Dedicate my life to you, hold my arms around you, and never give up on you.

"Paro... Yahaan baithi kya soche hai? Chal andar... Devarji-Sa ko pata chala ki maine thaare ko akela mooh suja ke baithne diya hai toh mhaara ghar-nikaala kar denge.." [Paro, What are you thinking about sitting here? Come inside... If Devarji-sa gets to know that I let you sulk here, he'll throw me out of the house..] Maithli quipped, bringing a forlorn Paro inside the haveli from the aangan.
It was almost sunset, the time when sun's radiance dimmed to a dull orange, making everything in its light iridescent with a strange sort of love. Yet, the epitome of love, the life of this haveli, was sitting in the aangan, trying to find the beauty in it all.
It was difficult, trying to find the alacrity she so thrived upon, when he wasn't around to be her sun.
It had become a ritual of sorts now, sitting in the aangan every evening, waiting for him to come. Her conscious mind knew, that he was on the border, away from her.
But when did she really pay heed to her conscious mind where he was involved?
She'd see him, in all her heart, coming back from office, while she waited in the aangan for him.
She'd see him, scolding her, for waiting outside in almost cold.
She'd see him, taking her inside, their fingers intertwined like their fates.
Each day that he was away, her mind heart never gave up on these images. After all, they were what got her through this wait.

Ho aye ji maahre chatar sujaan, leejo pehchaan
I am completely skilful, please sense that.
Kaahe bharmaao ji, aao ji, aao ji, aao ji
Please stop deluding me, and come back for real.
aao ji, aao ji, aao ji
Come soon.

But at the end of the day, she was empty without him. It was like she had been robbed of colors in her life. It was as if a man like him, who didn't even know the name of colors, was the reason for all the colorful joys of her life.
And every little tug the winds made in the curtains of her room... Every meek sound that came from the creaks from the old wooden doors in the haveli, was taunting her, that he was back.
She'd almost pleaded out loud, to whichever gods were listening... to him if he was listening, to come back already.
She was a desert without him. Strange, how he always called her his rainfall instead.
She threw the bed-sheet off of her, and stretched herself. Sleep still didn't want to grace her eyes, and she knew why. Her heart ached more, considering he had been gone for a month now. She moved towards the photo that was on their tea-table now.
"Jaldi aa jaao. Nahi bhaata kuch aapke bina..."
[Please come back soon. Nothing is anything without you.]
The empty room haunted her, and she made her way up to the roof.
The chill in the breeze made her shiver a little, and his thoughts rankled her some more.
How he'd engulf her into his arms, just so she could revel in his warmth.
"Aa jaao Major-sa... Thand bhi lag rahi hai ab toh mhaare ko..."
[Come back already, Major-sa... See I am so cold...]
And her phone rang.

Chaandan mein main taku ree, tera sona mukhda
In the full moon, I see your face
-x-x-
She knew he'd call. It was understood somewhere deep down inside by both of them, that the strings that bound them together really didn't need earthly explanations of how, when and why... They just knew when the other called out to them, and they knew they'd beckon to that call.
She let it ring, as she gazed at the full moon on the clear night and smiled to herself.
-x-x-
Pyaara pyaara mukhda
Your beautiful, adorable face
-x-x-
"Kitni baar mana kia hai tujhe..." [How many times have I told you..] his voice came from the other end, and she couldn't help but sigh.
"Kya?" [What] She questioned.
"Yaad mat kia kar itna..." [Not to think of me this much...] He answered.
He had been missing her too, more than she knew. More than she could ever comprehend. But he couldn't help it. He had to be on the border. High alert had been declared and every officer worth anything had been posted on the LOC.
Every moment of the day, of the night, her thoughts would follow him like his own shadow. He'd wake up, craving for the warmth only she provided.
He'd miss the food she cooked for him.
But most of it all, he'd miss that glowing face of hers, which he came home to every evening.

Aanchal mein main rakhu ree chanda ka tukda
Face that I keep hidden from the world... My personal treasure.

"Kaise pata aapko..."[How did you know??] She asked again, even though her heart knew the answer.
"Chhat pe baithi hai naa.. Thand lag rahi hogi, andar jaa Paro.."[You're sitting on the terrance, right? Go inside right now, Paro... You'll catch a cold.] He wasn't in a mood to joke right now, her well being was always first.
She smiled, she wasn't going inside. The room was lonely. She was lonely.
"Mhaare ek sawaal ka jawaab denge, Major-sa.." [Will you answer a question of mine, Major-sa] Her voice chimed, and he sighed.
The sands seemed beautiful just by hearing her voice. Even though it was dark, the moon was shining, and it just felt as if it would have been a perfect night if she was besides him.
"Nai..." [No.] He answered, "So jaa.. Jaa.." [Go to sleep.]
-x-x-
Aye ji pyaara mukhda
Such is your beauty...
-x-x-
"Aaj bhi chaand daag wala, bhadda sa hi hai kya?" [Is the moon ugly, filled with spots tonight as well?] she still asked, knowing he'd answer her.
The next moment, she heard his faint laughter over the phone. It was still mesmerizing, if not intoxicating, that laughter of his. Maybe the sound of his laughter would be the one thing she'd take with her if and when she went to the other world, and ask her bholenath to never make another sound like that, for it was too precious and only hers.
-x-x-
He still laughed only to her.
And she was the only one who'd ever hear what came next.
He had been slipping his fingers in the sand, his eyes had already been on the beautiful moon tonight.
How it resembled everything that she was.
Yeh joh rog hai naa.. Thaare liye bahot accha hai...
His Bapu-sa's voice reminded him, what he knew well now, deep in his soul.
"Kaise ho sakta hai bhadda... Aaj toh chaand tera hai..."
[How would it be ugly? It's you tonight.]
She could feel the blush climb onto her ears.
And he sighed.
-x-x-
Tu dhare jahaan paav toh muskaye ye dharti... Saiyaa
Wherever your feet grace the earth, everything blossoms, My Love
Saiyaa...

"Aur taare? Chup gaye honge fir toh..." [And the stars? They must be hidden now?] She asked, her throat a little dry.
"Kaise chupenge? Baawlo jaise roshan ho rahe hai, tu joh hai unki chaand..." [Why will they hide? They are twinkling with a sort of madness unlike anything. You are the moon, after all.] He just wished he could see her right now, for the red on her face would definitely match the red of her sindoor.
He laughed some more, god she'd be a delight to watch right now. Her pale alabaster skin would gleam in the moonlit night, her doe like eyes would be double their size, and her rose like lips would be pursed with shock.
He tried to remember what she was wearing the last time he saw her. Closing his eyes, he tried to recall the color of her flowy ghaghra... Green was it? Or Blue?
No, blue was her odhani.
What were the earrings she was adorning?
He heard her clearing her throat on the other side, and turned her attention to her. Not that it wasn't already.
-x-x-
Oji mahri binti sunlo aan mhare bhagwan
Please listen to my pleas, my beloved
Hame naa sataao ji...
Don't tease me anymore
aao ji aao ji aao ji
Come soon.

"Bas kijiye ab Major-sa... Aa jaaiye..." [Enough already, Major-sa. Come back please...] She finally said what was gnawing at her heart.
He gulped down a lump that was building in his throat. Why did she have to plead to him, as if things were in his hand?
And why did she have to say this first? Couldn't she feel that he was suffering as much as she was?
At least she was home. He wasn't.
"So jaa Paro..." [Go to sleep, Paro...]
-x-x-
Sarap dase sunaa sunaa, kaisaa meetha saa zahar
This feels like a serpent's bite, yet the poison is sweet...
Ae ji Meetha meetha saa zahar,
Darad badhe duna duna, uthe hiye mein lahar
The pain doubles each passing second, constricting the heart into waves of torment...
Uthe hirde mein lahar...
-x-x-
"Do din mei ek baar phone karte ho... Uspe bhi mhaare ko sone ko keh rahe ho..." [You call once in two days, and even then, don't want to talk to me...] She was close to tears now.
"Shaant ho jaa.." [Calm down...] He breathed to her, his own soul in pain.
He tried to take his mind away from the blatant fact that she would break down any second now. He didn't want to face her breakdown. She was his strength. And at times like this, when she'd be weak, he'd feel his own world collapsing too. That was the last thing he wanted to face right now.
"Tune kaunsi jhumkiyaan pehni thi... Yaad nahi aa raha mujhe..." [Which earrings were you wearing..?? I don't remember...] He continued, wanting to deflect her plea.
She wiped the almost tears that had gathered in her eyes. And realized what she was doing.
But she couldn't help it, could she?
-x-x-
Main karu shingaar toh sharmaaye yeh darpan saiyaa...
The mirror shies away when I am adorning myself with thoughts of you...
saiyaa...
-x-x-
"Neele moti wali jhumkiyaan thi..." [Blue pearl earrings...] She replied.
"Aur?" [And...] He asked.
"Aapne joh pushkar se laake di thi, woh wali maala..." [And the necklace you brought from Pushkar..] She continued.
"Joh tune kahaa tha ki tujhe bilkul pasand nahi aayi..." [The one which you apparently didn't like...] He quipped.
"Nahi hai pasand... Bilkul nahi hai pasand..." [Yes... I don't like them... Not even a bit...] She retorted.
-x-x-
Oji unche chad ke deu ajaan na bano anjaan
I have been calling you for a while now, please don't be a stranger...
-x-x-
"Paro..." He breathed, "Aa jaaunga... Jald hi... Tu befijool ki fikar naa kiya kar..."
[I'll come... As soon as I can... Please don't worry unnecessarily...]
She remained silent.
"Paro??" He asked, urgency lacing his voice.
"Jeeja ne aaj bataaya tha mhaare ko... Sarhad par tanaav ki khabar, Major-sa..." [Jeeja told me today, about the border being volatile, Major-Sa...] Her feeble voice came out, and the fear she had in her heart was almost palpable.
He drew circles in the sand with his fingers, imagining it was her hair he was playing with.
What was he supposed to tell her? That the border situation was always tense? That she didn't need to encompass so much anxiety in her dainty body for him?
He had this frigid faith inside, that if he was away from her, he'd find a way back to her. Always.
But she didn't seem to believe that.
She didn't seem to understand the hold her soul had on his. A bond so strong, that all the other wordly bonds were baseless against it.
She really needed to get it inside her head that whenever she'd call, consciously or sub-consciously, he'd listen. Forever.
-x-x-
parda hataao ji.. aao ji aao ji aao ji
Remove your veil, and please come before me...
-x-x-
"Toh?" [So?] He questioned.
"Toh aapko kuch ho gaya toh..." [So?? What if something happened to you?] She answered.
"Kuch nahi hoga mujhe..." [Nothing will happen.] He replied, "Tujhse kahaa hai naa, chinta mat kiya kar..." [I told you already to not be bothered by this...]
"Biwi hu aapki... Pyaar karti hu aapse... Aap yeh kaise bol sakte hai ki.." [I am your wife! I love you... How can you even say this??]
"Paro..." He tried to reason, "Shaant... Shaant ho jaa.."
When he felt the line go silent, he tried to listen to her heartbeats slowing down.
"Sun... Mujhe kuch nahi ho sakta. Tujhse duur nahi marunga mai..."
[Listen... Nothing can happen to me. I won't die away from you.]
"Sssh.. Aisa mat boliye..."
[Sssh.. Please don't say such things.]
"Toh bas... Tu bhi chinta mat kar... Mai tere paas hi wapis aaunga..." [Then you also don't be disturbed... I'll come back only to you...] He chimed, "Ab soo jaa... Kal Kaaki-sa se taane sunne hai kya?" [Now go sleep please... Do you want to face Kaaki-sa's taunts tomorrow?]
She smiled now, relieved at being able to reduce her anxiety a little.
"Thik hai..." [Okay..]
"Aur sun..." [And listen...] He cleared his throat, and closed his eyes. This was still difficult after all these years.
"Aap mhaare se pyaar karte ho..." [You love me...] Her voice came from the other end, and he felt a smile creeping up on his lips again.
"Haan... Karta hu... Bahot pyaar karta hu..." [Yes... Yes, I do. I love you.] He breathed, "Kal phone karunga..." [Will call tomorrow.]
