INDIA - For author B L GAUTAM, a story is an imaginary curve reality sought to follow but failed. Watching life
happening and not happening, he always wanted to intervene and twist the ways of God. He strongly feels that
some people deserve a second chance and he must create it for them. While he played blood rival to the god, the
story of "Mohammed A Mechanic and Mary A Maid" (published by Partridge India) happened.
"Mohammed A Mechanic and Mary A Maid" is a collection of stories, with the title story depicting a sweet bond
between a maid and a mechanic. To Mohammed and Mary, religion is a useless tag and society is a mere crowd
around their existence. They ultimately find their blissfulness living together with no strings attached. This and other
stories recurrently reveal the bond that exists between an oppressed woman and an innocent man. Reduced to live
a subterranean life, they find their redemption by entwining their souls, and sometimes, bodies.
Except the title story "Mohammed a Mechanic & Mary a Maid," all the stories are portrayed in the rural milieu of
Northern India. The narrative of these tales is simple and traditional, yet the content is provocative. No other Indian-
English fiction has ever characterized the Indian rural woman and sexuality, so vividly and so honestly than
GAUTAM's work, setting it apart from the rest.
With a spectrum of stories covering the taste and aspirations of readers, GAUTAM believes that his creation can
establish a deep connection with youth and adults everywhere. He further hopes these stories will stimulate the
readers, particularly of Asian culture, to rethink about their relationships keeping a woman's perspective in mind.
