Chapter 19:
"A parent-child duo get killed in middle of night without rousing neighbors." Emily begins. "The first set of victims are father and daughter with daughter showing signs of sexual abuse. The second set of victims are mother and son. There is no sign of sexual abuse but the mother is a real slave driver and her discipline techniques borderlines on torture. There is absolutely no forensic evidence in either of crime scenes. However at Guhas, the crime changes by acting out on framed photos. The school hasn't noticed anything out of the normal but after interviewing the friends of children, there is evidence of this dislike for parents and alienation from peers."
"They practically painted themselves as targets for the predator, if one were to pay attention to the kids." Geet frowned. "That would explain why the killer used the children to stab their own parent."
"Is that the parent responsible for their predicament? Do you think Bhagat actually abused his own daughter?" Satya asked, eyebrows meeting hairline.
"I think they were bystanders. I could be wrong without interviewing the remaining parent but my best bet is - the killer blames the parent for the child's state. " Geet replied. She continued to add, "If the killer did use the children as his accomplice then there is no accomplice who is a minor or a per-pubescent child. This would give the killer complete control on the act of crime and postmortem behavior."
"But Geet, with the kind of organization and how quickly the crime scene is cleaned for forensic evidence would point to an accomplice - someone the dominant one in the relationship completely trusts and acts as a true alpha." Maan questioned.
"With the kind of agenda and control in crime scene?" Geet shook her head. "I doubt it. Even if you bring your own house keeping, it wouldn't mimic your previous work perfectly."
"Are you suggesting the cold cases from couple of decades ago?" Maan looked taken aback.
Geet stilled. "Not...exactly." She tried to amend her insinuation immediately. "Look at the two crime scenes Maan." She didn't pause for dramatic effect but piled on. "In both the cases the killer cleaned up after him. He killed two people and clean up. Even if he had left traces, we wouldn't have found out much. Except for the rooms with the crime scene, the rest of the house is absolutely clean. He stabs people dozens of times and he doesn't get even a drop of blood? No, that's not possible. Did he wear something over his clothes - just like David would while walking into a blood bath? Perhaps."
"I agree with Geet," Satya replied. "Have you ever tried getting blood off your shirt? Difficult, trust me. And then there are shoes. Couldn't he have brought a set of change of clothes with him?" He asked instead.
"He could have. He walks to bathroom, changes to fresh set of clothes after taking a hot shower and goes ahead to clean the house to remove bloody foot prints. David did find traces of blood in bathroom shower." Maan replied.
"He is confident he isn't going to get caught. He came well prepared, planned well in advance and executed his plan without a hitch. This happened in both cases. Do you still think Guhas were a poor copy of Bhagats?" Maan asked, looking at Geet.
"I was wrong Maan," she replied, thumbing through decade old cases. "Bhagats and Guhas were carefully chosen. The children hold the thread to figuring out who the person is."
"I thought you said it was the parent?" Maan asked, confused.
Geet shook her head. "No, what Dr. Vandana said and to which I agree, its the relationship with parent that has made the families as targets. Two children are almost of same age with similar history with parents get killed with the dominant parent. Or the bystander parent. We have to find out the relationship between the parent and child to understand what the children really went through. Also comb through the kids life - where they went, what they did, their hobbies, their closest friends, their diaries, homework, behavior at school and their online activity. I can bet, the two kids have crossed path somewhere in same network where our killer is looking for such kids."
"He is going to strike again, isn't he?" Emily asked softly.
Her question was met with silence. Geet usually was one quick on uptake but she looked frozen.
"Geet?" Emily asked, louder. Geet sat straight in her chair and scrambled for other folders on the table: all cold cases.
"Geet, what's going on?" Maan asked taking in Geet's disturbed state.
"Do you remember Vansh Arora's statement?" Geet asked flipping through files wildly.
"Yeah, wait," Emily replied and found it in Guhas file. "What about it?" She asked looking at Geet.
"Listen to this -", Geet said pulling out a sheet of paper from a file. "I heard a soft voice singing lullaby when I went to deliver milk. I knocked on door as usual signaling didi that I have delivered milk, and the singing stopped. I called again once more but there was no response. I just left." Geet looked up from the paper she was holding. Maan snatched that and re-read the statement of milkman, to confirm his initial gut instinct.
"What does that mean?" Emily asked.
Geet looked at Maan when she replied. "It's time we start looking at old cases, my father's case notes and talk to Dr. Vandana again. In that particular order."
"Holy shit." Satya and Emily intoned together.
