CHAPTER 5
Paris was beautiful. The people, the sites, the Eiffel Tower! Zoya was amazed. This was their third of five days here and everything had been amazing, truly a trip she would never forget and one where her husband was the man she knew before they had gotten married and his possessive issues had taken root. He was attentive, loving and considerate to everything she wanted. Every morning that she woke to see them really in Paris, she couldn't believe it. It felt like a dream. A dream she never wanted to wake up from because life had never been more perfect.
Something was going to change that really soon...
Asad was getting stir crazy, he could see all the French men looking at his wife with blatant interest. Staring at her exotic beauty and drawn to her warm personality, her bubbliness. Her hated it. Of course some men would look at it differently. Be smug that he was with the woman everyone wanted. That she was his and as much as they looked, they could never have her. But Asad, he saw everything differently. He saw it as Zoya having other options. That she could leave him. She couldn't leave him. He didn't know if he could go on with life if she left him and that made him weak and vulnerable and he hated it.
He'd been effective in hiding his fears and insecurities around Zoya, doing everything to make her happy. She was happy. And seeing her all flushed and smiling so hard that her face hurt made something deep inside him warm. She was his life now and he would do anything he had to to keep her happy.
He closed his eyes and for the briefest moment the memory of a couple years ago haunted him. Zoya knew nothing of his life before they met, well not that part and he didn't know if he could ever tell her. It still stung. It was the reason for his constant insecurities. She couldn't find out. She just couldn't know.
______
the next day saw the breaking point of Asad's temper and the end of their vacation when one of the hotel's concierge put his hand on Zoya. They had been walking around just taking in the sites, sampling the food. His wife was a complete foodie and she still managed to maintain her figure. He didn't know how and he wasn't complaining. They walked around, his hand slung around her neck and hers around his waist. They probably looked very much like a newly wedded, deeply in love honeymooning couple and he felt it. The last three days, as antsy as he'd been, had been beautiful. They were happy, the worry lines around Zoya's eyes had all but disappeared and she was smiling more than he had seen her do in the longest while. And he was deeply prided that he was the one who put all those smiles on her face.
When they made it back to the hotel, Zoya had went to ask for some more sheets to be sent to their room when the concierge that had checked them in and whom had seem way too friendly came up and put his hand on Zoya's exposed shoulder and Asad's pulse raised and he involuntarily clenched his fists hard as the man's fingers skittered down Zoya's shoulder and he'd had enough!!
He didn't remember what happened. Apparently he had beaten the man unconscious and was taken to jail. The man miraculously didn't press charges in plea from Zoya but their vacation was officially over! Zoya fumed the entire time as she packed her bags not once saying a work to him but it was when they reached home that everything reached breaking point.
________
"I can't do this anymore!" Zoya yelled as they entered the foyer and she flung her bags to the ground. "I really thought things had changed for the better but you keep doing this!" she said tears. "W-Why are you doing this to me, to us?" she begged. Asad swallowed hard. He should tell her. Tell her why he was like this but she would leave him anyway. It was inevitable. It didn't matter now if he told her. She would still pack her bags and leave him. He didn't know what to say, "I'm sorry Zoya." He stepped closer and she moved back, "No, the time for sorry is over. It's overused and it holds no meaning because this keeps happening."
She sighed, "I really hoped we could get past this and be us again. But you're not trying!" She shook her head. "I am trying Zoya. I really am. Please give me a chance." "A chance?" she asked disbelieving. "I gave you chances every time!" the tears were running freely and everything seemed beyond hope. "I'm done giving you chances."
And with that she walked off to their room and slammed the door. A blatant sign for him to stay away. He slunk to the floor in front of their room, his head in his hands. He had ruined everything and now it was all over. He didn't know how much time had passed since he had been sitting there but Zoya came barreling out of the room suitcase behind her. "I'll come for everything else later." She said not meeting his eyes. Then she turned and sighed and said, "Goodbye Asad."
He stood up and trailed behind her pleading with her to stay. He caught her elbow and pulled her around, her suitcase falling down and took her face between his palms. "I love you! Please don't leave me. Don't give up on me Zoya please!" He pleaded with her. Tears ran down her face but she said nothing. "Please look at me." he said when she looked down and away from him. "Zoya, please don't go." She pulled away, picked up her suitcase and walked out the door leaving a broken shell of a man behind her. When the slam of the front door sealed their fate, Asad sank to the floor and cried.
