Hi fatima

thanks for the pm

Since you have already mentioned that things are going to change from next update I am egarly waiting for that update

So egar that I read this update so quickly as if u have already updated the next update and once I finish reading this I will be able to read the next update...

Anyways jokes apart this was once again a very well written update all the parts of this update were so perfect

They were actually hilarious too
I loved this intelligent side of meher who is always finding ways for her problems

I mean firstly impressing mr. Bakshi with her cooking and then inviting him for dinner while reading that I was just laughing imagining preet's face over this

I am sure in his head he would be counting scores like in wwf that meher 1 and preet 0 types

And he must be feeling how intelligent and smart he is when he made that meher's mother excuse ...

Coming to meher I really feel for her poor girl have lost everything
I really wish from next update her suffering would come to an end

And I am also waiting for our Meet romance to start and how this story is going to go further

So keeping my fingers crossed waiting for the next update

And now I know I am always being late in commenting these days but what to do due to financial year end in India there is lot of work pressure

But I promise sooner or later I will always give you a reply

Take care and waiting for next pm...

Thank for the feedback Bhagyashree...😛

After your last set of comments I thought...okay for her JWM is totally bombing and she's lost interest and patience. I had totally made up my mind not to update until I get feedback from you.

But it seems you are busy...Ah...tax season...I know how it is...I finished up early with mine this year. 😎

Actually..I think my SS have spoiled you...in that we jump right into the romance. In FFs i takes longer. But I've written well ahead so I can tell you things are going well for these 2.

Hope you like the next update...things will finally change for Meher. 😛

Chapter 14 - It's a Deal

Link to: Table of Contents

"I swear this girl will be the end of me", cried Preet, as he waved the train ticket Meher had left behind angrily in the air.

"I think we have bigger problems Preet", Gaurav reminded him. "You need to go find Meher. Rishap is sure to create problems for us if we don't make an appearance at the club. Or worse, not have her here for Mr. Bakshi's party".

"I don't need to find her", sighed Preet. "If she didn't take the ticket with her then she probably went back to my place. I mean where else would she go?"

"She looked pretty upset when she left here though", said Gaurav. "You better make sure just in case".

Preet nodded. He waited 20 minutes then called home, but no one was answering. Damn! he thought. What do I do now?

Meanwhile...

"Uff!!" Cried Meher, as she entered Preet's apartment and slammed the door behind her. She didn't know who to be angry with more, Preet Juneja or herself. He after all was an idiot. Why did he have to bring up her mother? Had he any idea how much that hurt her? Of course not...he was ignorant of her problems...but that was because he didn't give her a chance to explain...so he was an idiot nonetheless. So why had she been clinging to him for hope? She was educated. She could get a job and a place of her own! But how? With no money, no address, no phone, no references, and only a shalwar kameez and a wedding dress to her name, her prospects didn't look promising. Still, she was determined not to stay another minute, even if it meant going back to Delhi and facing Viren. It was better than being insulted or constantly worrying about being thrown out by that idiot Preet Juneja!

Meher picked up the phone and decided to call Maya for help. Her friend could give her an update of the situation in Delhi, and maybe even wire her some money. But despite repeated attempts, she only got a no longer in service message'. Maybe she was forced to change her number, thought Meher. Maya had said that she had moved back to her mother's place, but unfortunately, she didn't have that number either.

Meher then decided to take a chance and call her Chachu for help. "Hello", she said, when someone answered.

"Meher? Is that you?" Daljeet Chachee answered.

"Yes Chachee", sighed Meher. "I need to speak with Chachu please".

"Do you have any idea how much trouble you've caused us by running away young lady?" said Daljeet, as she ignored Meher's request. "Your Chacha's hair has turned white with worry!"

"I'm sorry Chachee...but..", said Meher.

"Sorry is not good enough Meher!" cried Daljeet. "Viren and his men keep coming by and threatening us. They think we're holding back information about you. You had better tell us where you are so that we can tell him and get him off our back".

"What's wrong with you Daljeet!" cried Balwant as he took the phone from his wife. "Meher Beta, are you alright? Are you safe? I've been so worried".

"Yes Chachu", Meher began to sob. "I'm alright. And I'm so sorry for all the trouble I've caused. But I didn't know what else to do at the time".

"It's alright beta", said Balwant. "The important thing is that you are fine".

"I was hoping to stay away from Delhi until Mr. Kashyap gets back, and then I could explain to him that I don't want to marry Viren or be a part of his will", said Meher. "But Daljeet Chachee says Viren has been threatening you guys".

"You don't worry about that Meher, we're fine", said Balwant. "Where are you? Do you need anything? Do you have money?"

"Well...", began Meher.

"Are you crazy or something?" cried Daljeet, as she snatched the phone back from her husband. "Now listen here Meher, you'll not get a penny's worth of help from us! Your Chacha may have a death wish but I certainly don't! Now be a good girl and tell us where you are. I'm sure Viren will be happy to arrange for your safe return".

"I'm sorry Chachee...", sighed Meher, as she hung up the phone. Meher covered her face with her hands. She was back to square one. She couldn't go home, and she couldn't stay here. What to do? What to do? She wished she hadn't torn up that check Preet had given her. Meher went to the closet and took out the wedding dress she had kept folded neatly in a bag. Maybe she could sell it someplace, and get some money to get by for a few days. It was worth a try, she decided. The phone rang just as she was about to leave. She walked over to it, but then decided to let it ring and walked out the door.

Later...

Preet was driving around the streets of Mumbai cursing his bad luck. He had tried to reach Meher from the office several times but she wan't answering the phone. When he came home to check on her she was gone. Happy Ji had confirmed the fact that he had seen her go out with a large shopping bag in her hands. All this time he had been trying to get rid of her, and now when she had finally decided to leave, he needed her back yet again to allay Rishap's suspicions. Where could she have gone? And what was in the bag? Nothing seemed missing from his apartment, so she must have left with the only thing she came with...that heavy bridal type dress.

It was almost evening, and Preet had all but given up hope of finding Meher, when he finally spotted her coming out of a shop. He quickly pulled over to one side and ran after her.

"Meher! Meher wait!" He called out.

Upon hearing her name, Meher stopped and turned in his direction, but on seeing that it was Preet, she started walking off again.

"Do you have any idea how long I've been looking for you?" cried Preet, as he caught up to her. "I even left work early. That is certainly not going to look good on my record".

"Why?" asked Meher.

"Why what?" said Preet.

"Why were you looking for me?" asked Meher. "I thought I was doing what you wanted and finally getting out of your hair".

"Yes well, you...uh...forgot your train ticket", said Preet.

"I don't need that ticket, because I'm not going back to Delhi", said Meher. "Not yet anyway. Not that you care enough to find out why".

"Hey Mumbai is a cool place", said Preet. "I don't have a problem if you want to stay. Have you found a place yet? Because if not, I can always take you back home".

"Oh really?" said Meher, as her eyes narrowed. "And why pray tell the sudden change in your attitude?"

"Because...uh...I'm really a nice guy at heart. And I'm always up for helping someone in need", smiled Preet. "Just like, I'm sure you'd help me out too if needed". He pretended to throw a playful punch at Meher's arm.

"Get to the point Juneja", said Meher. "What do you really want?"

"Okay", sighed Preet. "Some colleagues from the office want us to come to this new club that just opened up. And there is an office party at the end of this month that, and you and I are supposed to be the guests of honor. Everything's being arranged by the same guy I got promoted over, so he really has it in for me. I would have made an excuse and said you were out of town or something, but he found the train ticket you left behind at the office and became suspicious".

Meher started laughing. "This is a joke right?" she chuckled.

"Go ahead and laugh", said Preet. "My entire life has turned into one big joke! Now come on let's go home". He tried to take Meher by the arm, but she pulled away from him.

"Ek (one) minute!" cried Meher. "Just because I laughed, doesn't mean that I'm going home with you".

"Well then where are you going?" asked Preet.

"That's neither your business nor your headache anymore", said Meher, as she started to walk off.

"Look Meher I know I've been a little harsh with you", said Preet as he walked alongside her, "but it'll be getting dark soon. Do you have a place to stay or not? Because it's not safe for you to be roaming around unfamiliar streets like this. Have you forgotten about the other night?"

"You need not worry about me Preet", said Meher. "I'm a big girl. I can take care of myself".

"Meher stop!" said Preet.

"No you stop!" cried Meher. She looked around and saw a policeman getting tea from a nearby stall. "In fact if you don't stop pestering me...I'll...I'll report you to that policeman over there".

"You wouldn't dare!" Preet said in a challenging tone.

"Oh really? Watch me!" cried Meher.

To Preet's surprise Meher marched right up to the policeman. "Officer!" she cried, nearly startling the poor man into dropping his tea. "Ye ladka mujhe tang kar raha hai. (This man is teasing me). He insists on taking me home with him. Do something!"

"Kyun bay", said the policeman, glaring at Preet. "Akaili ladki ko dekh ke teri itni himmat bard gayi?" (Oh. You saw a girl by herself and became this bold?)

"No no officer, you've got it all wrong", said Preet quickly. "She is actually...uh...my wife".

"I am not!" cried Meher.

Preet ignored Meher. "But she's a little...you know", he said, waving his finger to indicate that Meher was a little crazy. Meher's mouth fell open, but Preet continued undeterred. "I'm trying to get her home so she can take her evening medicine. Otherwise God knows what will happen. She loves to climb out onto window ledges. You must have seen her on the local news some days ago".

"Preet Juneja! I'm going to kill you!" cried Meher, as she raised both fists in an effort to hit him, but he quickly ducked behind the policeman.

"See...", said Preet. "I told you she was crazy. And how come she knows my name if she wasn't my wife?"

"Why you...!" Meher attempted to hit Preet again, but he ducked and she wound up slapping the policeman instead. The confused and stunned man dropped his tea too.

"Oops!" said Meher as she covered her mouth with both hands. "I'm so sorry. It was an accident. I was trying to get him. This is all your fault Preet!"

"Is not!" said Preet.

"Is too!" said Meher.

"Is not!" Preet.

"Is too!" said Meher.

"Enough!!" cried the policeman. "That's it...I'm taking both of you down to the station".

Later...

Gaurav and Sam walked into the police station.

"Hi sir, I'm looking for my friend Preet Juneja, I got a call from him saying that he was down here", Gaurav said to an officer.

"Thank God someone came down here to get them", said the officer, pointing towards Preet and Meher. "These 2 have been fighting non-stop since they got here, and they're driving all of us nuts".

Gaurav and Sam glanced over to a bench on the opposite side of the room. Preet and Meher were sitting on opposite ends of the same bench, with their arms folded.

"I can't believe you actually got people to believe that these 2 were married", Sam whispered.

"Neither can I", sighed Gaurav. He turned to the officer again. "I'm almost afraid to ask, but what are the charges?"

"Attempted kidnapping, attempted assault, slapping a police officer and making him drop his tea...and general disturbance of peace", replied the officer. "We're waiting for our bade saab (senior officer) to come in before we actually book them. Personally...I think they're both crazy".

Gaurav passed his hand over his face then he and Sam walked over to Preet and Meher. Preet was very happy to see his friend and got up and hugged him immediately.

"Gaurav, thank God you're here", smiled Preet. His expression changed slightly when he saw Sam. "Sam...Hi...you're here too".

"Yes", frowned Sam, "Gaurav finally told me about the stupid scheme you 2 cooked up. He's already in the dog house for lying to me...but you Preet...at the police station...awaiting booking...now that really takes the cake".

"It's all her fault", said Preet pointing at Meher.

"It is not", retorted Meher.

"Is too", said Preet.

"Is not", said Meher.

"Is too", said Preet.

"Man, you guys are worse than the grade schoolers I work with", sighed Sam.

"Yeah", agreed Gaurav. "Now will you 2 stop it already? They told us the charges they have lined up for you. You both could be in for a lot of trouble".

"I've never been arrested before, so how the hell do we get out of here?" asked Preet.

"Well, the good news is that you've got them all so confused they don't know exactly what to do with you", said Gaurav. "They're waiting on their senior officer to come in and decide. I guess the only thing we can do in the mean time is wait".

"Hi, I'm Simran, Gaurav's wife", said Sam, as she went over and offered her hand to Meher. "But you can call me Sam. Everyone does".

"Hi, I'm Meher", smiled Meher.

"You seem like a sweet enough girl", chuckled Sam. "How did you get involved with Preet?"

"Gee thanks Sam", said Preet.

Just then a junior officer approached them and said, "Bade Saab ne app sab ko bulaya hai". (The senior officer is calling you now).

The small group followed the policeman to the next room and braced themselves to face the officer in charge. Preet recognized him right away. It was Inspector Khan. The same officer who was there the night he had rescued Meher from the window ledge.

"Inspector Khan", smiled Preet. "Nice to see you again. It's me Preet Juneja, you remember...tall building...window ledge...TV cameras".

"Ah yes", said Inspector Khan. "Mr. Juneja what are you doing here? I don't believe we've gotten any word on your wife's stolen jewels yet.

"You mean she really is his wife sir?" asked the junior officer.

"Yes", replied Inspector Khan.

"Baat toh aap ki sahi hai saab. Itna bura salook ek patni hi apne pati ke saat kar sakti hai", said the officer. "But still she claims that she isn't his wife. That's how this mess started". He recounted the entire scene to his senior. (What you're saying must be true. Only a wife can mistreat her husband in such a manner).

"Now I'm confused", said Inspector khan. "Mr. Juneja is she or is she not your wife?"

Yes", said Preet.

"No", said Meher.

Gaurav and Sam looked at each other worriedly.

"Heh heh...Woh kya hai na sir (the truth is sir), she's a little upset with me", chuckled Preet. "She brought lunch into the office today, but I was too busy to eat it with her...bas...iska meter ghoom gaya (and...she totally lost it)".

"Bas?" said Inspector Khan. (That's it?)

"Bas", sighed Preet.

"Wait a minute!" cried Meher, as she stepped forward. She was about to say something, when Preet stepped in front of her.

"Now you tell me sir, what couple doesn't fight?" continued Preet.

"That's true", agreed Inspector Khan.

"But does that mean you start denying that your husband even exists?" said Preet glaring at Meher. "I swear she can be so stubborn and unforgiving at time".

"Why you..." said Meher, gritting her teeth.

"Hmm...still Mr. Juneja, ladki ka mamla hai (this matter involves a girl)", said Inspector Khan. "I can't just send her home with you like this if she's not willing. Do you have any proof that she is your wife? A marriage certificate or something?"

"No", said Preet. "I mean...uh... it's not something I thought I needed to carry around".

"Well then how about something you may know about her...something that only a husband might know", suggested Inspector Khan.

Preet thought for a minute then smiled. "Of course...she has a mole about 10 inches down the center of her back...right here".

He attempted to put his finger on the exact location, but Meher slapped his hand away. Her face turned red as Gaurav and Sam looked at her and Preet in surprise. Inspector Khan shook his head and called a lady constable to take Meher inside to check to see if Preet was telling the truth, but Meher relented and agreed to go home with him instead.

Inspector Khan reprimanded both of them and told them to get along from now on because the Mumbai police department had much more important things to do than settle useless domestic disputes. Preet apologized to the officers and thanked them for their understanding. He and Gaurav then took Meher and Sam home.

Later...

"Thank God that's over with", said Preet as he walked into his apartment. "Warna tumhari wajha se aaj lockup mein sona padta", he said accusingly to Meher. (Otherwise we'd be spending the night in jail, because of you).

"Don't you start again Preet", said Gaurav. "This is as much your fault as Meher's".

"Oh yeah...who told her to carry on the drama of being Mrs. Preet Juneja?" argued Preet. "We had everyone convinced just fine. And why did she have to come to the office with lunch?"

"You guys should never have started this tall tale in the first place. It's becoming a full time job just to manage it", said Sam, as she and Meher sat down on the sofa.

"Well, I wish we could go back in time and change things, but we can't", said Preet.

Gaurav went over and joined Sam. "Look Meher, we've been desperately trying to manage this lie we've started, because we have our jobs and careers at stake. But do you mind telling us why you were pretending to be Mrs. Juneja? It obviously had nothing to do with helping us."

"I've been trying to explain myself for some time now Gaurav Bhaiya", said Meher, "but your friend here doesn't want to listen".

"Well I'm all ears now", said Preet.

Meher took a deep breath and began to tell her story...how she had first met Mr. Kashyap, about her mothers illness and subsequent death, and how she had run away from a marriage she had been trapped in. She also explained why she couldn't return to Delhi right away, and that she had lied because she had gotten upset when she saw Preet bring Ashlesha home especially after he had been so hesitant to let her spend the night.

"It was stupid I know, but I guess I just lost my cool and decided to teach him a lesson, and perhaps secure a place to live for the next few weeks", sighed Meher.

"It's just as well", said Gaurav, "because we now know that Ash was only here the other night because she was spying for Rishap. And if you hadn't pretended to be Preet's wife, the entire situation would have blown up in our face".

"I'm so sorry to hear about your mother sweetie", said Sam as she put her arm around Meher and comforted her. "I know it doesn't get easier no matter how much time has passed".

"Yes...you've been through a lot", sympathized Gaurav. "And on top of that, we got you involved in our mess. I'm sorry too".

When he offered no condolences, Sam and Gaurav both frowned at Preet.

"Oh...um...yeah...I'm sorry about your mom too", Preet added. There was a moment of silence before he spoke up again. "So you really are a run away bride".

"Duh!" said Meher rolling her eyes. "Who comes to an office party wearing a wedding dress?"

"Ha ha very funny...you think you're very jokey", said Preet. "And all this time I thought you had come down to Mumbai to help me when in reality...you used me!"

"Just like you used me", replied Meher.

"Okay", said Gaurav, "so neither one of you is better than the other. What we have to decide now is where we go from here".

"Well isn't it obvious?" said Sam. "Meher you need a place to hide for until the end of this month. And Preet needs you to pretend to be his wife for a little bit longer too. Seems to me you 2 had better make up and help each other out".

"What about his mother?" asked Meher. "Or was that a lie too?"

"No it wasn't", said Preet. "But I'm more worried about Rishap right now. And if Ma shows up...I don't know...I guess I'll just tell her you're the maid".

"What?!" cried Meher.

"Hey relax", chuckled Preet. "Joke tha. I'll worry about my mother if and when she shows up".

"Good", smiled Gaurav. "So let's consider this a done deal".

Preet and Meher looked at each other and reluctantly nodded in agreement.

"Fine", said Preet as he extended his hand towards Meher. "But only until your Mr. Kashyap comes back. And you have to promise to be here for Mr. Bakshi's party or anything else Rishap cooks up".

"Wait", said Meher, "I have a couple of conditions".

"What?" asked Gaurav.

"1st, I'm staying here, but that doesn't mean I'm turning into his cook, maid, or washer woman", said Meher.

"Done", said Preet.

"2nd, I get to use the bathroom first in the mornings", said Meher.

"But I have to go to work", protested Preet.

"Yes, but you have to be able to wake up first", scoffed Meher.

Preet looked at Gaurav and pointed at Meher as if complaining.

"What else Meher?" chuckled Gaurav.

"3rd", said Meher, "No bringing girls home while I'm here".

"Jealous huhn?" grinned Preet.

"In your dreams Juneja", said Meher, rolling her eyes. "4th, I'm pretending to be his wife in front of his colleagues, but that doesn't mean he can take advantage of the situation and ever try anything".

"What ever you say Ghuseeli Haseena", said Preet.

"5th...don't ever call me Ghuseeli Haseena", said Meher gritting her teeth. "And 6th ...I get to sleep on the bed".

"What?! Me on the sofa for 3 whole weeks? No way!" Protested Preet.

"Okay how about if we split up the use of the bed?" suggested Gaurav. "One day you take the bed and the next day Meher takes it".

"Fine", said Meher, "But I get to sleep on the bed tonight".

"Fine!" Preet grumbled. "Anything else?"

"Nope", said Meher, "I think I'm good".

"Preet do you have any conditions of your own?" asked Gaurav.

"Yes...one", said Preet. "That taking advantage of each other rule goes both ways. You know how they show in those Bollywood movies...the girl comes running and hugs the guy when she's scared or something...Hugs are strictly off limits".

"Please", said Meher, "I'd rather hug a live electric wire".

"Oh really", said Preet, "That didn't seem to be the case when I rescued you from the window ledge or that creep on the motorcycle".

"That's different", said Meher. "Main us waqt hosh mein nahi thi". (I wasn't in my senses).

"Oh? Behoshi mein hug karti ho toh hosh mein pata nahi kya karo gi", scoffed Preet. (Oh...if she hugs people when she isn't in her senses, I wonder what she'll do when she comes to).

"Whoa this is going to be a fun couple of weeks", laughed Sam. "If you 2 don't kill each other first that is".

"Okay fine!" said Gaurav. "All terms and conditions are agreed to. Let's see you shake hands on that".

"Deal?" said Preet.

Meher watched as he held out his hand again. She took a deep breath and put her hand in his. "Deal".
