Part 9
"After going through all the proofs and witnesses we conclude that the prosecution failed to offer any solid evidence to support their case against the accused . So hereby, with due respect , we set Mr.Raizada free of all the charges put against him."
Judge's final verdict rang in his ears, it should have given him relief, immense relief, but that feeling didn't even crossed his rational mind, leave alone to be felt and spread all over him. The narrowing eyes of the government lawyer, who from months was accusing him of the crimes he has done and also he hasn't, stood there defeated. But the vanquished posture of the lawyer was unable to sooth an ounce of pain within him. Today should have been the biggest day for him. Today he was free, free of the dirty world he was living in, free of all charges which was against his name.
Name!
But he was unable to free his soul from the sins. The man sitting on the chair, who had taken an oath to do justice, may have set him free from all the charges, but what about the sins he is unable to demolish from his mind and soul?
Is there any court in this cosmos where we can appeal to get our conscious free from the sins we have committed?
"Bhai?"
Arnav lifted his head to look at the man standing in front of him. The man who was his only supporter in this six months, the man, who no matter what, has supported him, stood by him.
"Bhai.." Aman extended his hand, a brown paper bag held in his outstretched hand.
Arnav looked at the packet as the back of his eyes burned with hot unshed waters. But it didn't dared to come out! The tears were more stubborn than its owner. Maybe if the tears have come out, the aching in his chest would have lessened a bit. Just maybe. But nothing worked! Nothing!
He extended his hand and took the packet from Aman's hand and stuffed it in his trouser's pocket with his trembling hands. He can't open that to see inside, he felt choked. Moving away from Aman, he started walking on the straight empty road ahead. He don't know whether the tress were passing by or his legs were carrying him, but it seemed to eat the distance because now the empty roads were filled with few people and the trees were replaced by small stalls.
"If you can't do it properly then just leave it and stop wasting my as well as yours time and go search for some other work that your old back can withstand!! "
Some loud and rude voice reached his ears as he again lifted his head to acknowledge his surroundings. An overweight man stood near a shop in muddy white shirt and a loose trouser shouting at an old man, who was carrying a sack on his back, barely managing it there. As he saw him, the old man said something in a low voice, probably apologizing and then turned around to reach the truck with his wobbly legs and pushed the sack inside the truck with the help of some coworkers.
His legs on his own accord took him towards the old man and he stood in front of him.
"Ji?" The old man looked at the young man in front of him, his hands joined together, an old habit of a poor old man.
"I...I mean how much money you will earn my doing this?" Arnav asked the old man.
The old man looked confused at him, if he also wants to work then he can talk to maalik, why was he asking him? But nevertheless he replied to Arnav.
"My granddaughter is very ill and I need 200 rupees for her medicines. But maalikhad offered me to give 300 if I put that 25 sacks on that truck" the old man replied.
Arnav nodded at him.
"I...I will do that work for you...but...will you give the remaining hundred rupees to me?" Arnav asked.
The old man looked at him confused and then shifted his gaze at the 25 sacks in front of him. With his already aching and wobbly legs he was not sure if he can manage all 25 on his own, so agreeing with the young man didn't looked a bad idea to him.
The old man timidly nodded his head, still little confused at the young man's proposal.
Arnav turned around towards the sack placed in front of the shop. Bending little, he carried one sack on his back and moved towards the truck.
The old man looked in the front of him as the nice man, who has offered to help him pushed the last sack in the truck. He was sure his back, under his black cotton shirt will be covered with red rashes and tomorrow morning his back will not allow him to stand on his two feet if he is the first timer but dare he saw a ounce of discomfort on his face. So, with the smile on his face, the old man concluded that the young man was familiar with this kind of work.
After pushing the last sack, Arnav moved towards where the old man stood.
"The work is done, you can ask him to pay you." Arnav said to the old man, no heaviness in his voice which could give away that he has just finished with the hardship.
The old man nodded and went inside to ask for the money. After the confused looking maalik handed him the money, he came out of the shop and spotting the young man standing where he has left him, he walked towards him. Removing a hundred rupees note from the three he has, he extended his hand towards the young man.
Arnav looked at the hundred rupees extended towards him.
"Do I know you beta? Why did you help me?" the old man many-a-times has faced problems in recalling people. May be he knows this kind young man, otherwise why will a stranger help him? "If you really needed the money then you could have directly contacted the maalik, and he would have not thought for a second before throwing me and appointing you."
Then he would have not been his Khushi's nice man!
Arnav looked at the old man and without saying anything, he took the hundred rupees from his hand and turned around.
"May God bless you, beta and keep you and your family happy"
The faint voice of overjoyed old man reached Arnav's ear, who didn't stop to acknowledge the old man's blessings. His heart wasn't feeling anything, no pain, no happiness, absolutely nothing. The gate of emotions which was opened by his sleeping beauty was now submerged in darkness again, in the same way it was before seeing her, meeting her, hearing her melodious voice.
"Arnav Bhaiya? Its been so long. Do you need something?" the shopkeeper asked, plastering a smile, his chest thudding with fear.
Arnav looked at the man, who was smiling at him but knew better than that.
"I want some jalebis...how much can I get in 100 rupees?" Arnav asked, not knowing if a hundred rupee as enough to buy some jalebis.
The shopkeeper looked at him confused. Money? Why will he pay him money? When had he ever done that?
"Arnav Bhaiya..I...I mean you can take anything you want...no need to pay any money..." the shopkeeper can only reply that for his life.
Arnav's ragging eyes jerked up to look at the shopkeeper.
"I said, I want jalebis in exchange of these hundred rupee, not a piece less nor more" Arnav breathed out.
"Ji.." the shopkeeper scurried away, frightened, to do as said and in no time was before Arnav with a small rectangle box in his hand.
Arnav handed the hundred rupee note to the shopkeeper and took the box from him and descended the two stairs of the shop.
Arnav lifted his head to look at the misty skies. The hazy view provided by the sky filled his soul with only one person. Khushi! He closed his eyes, still facing the vast sky. I love you! His heart cried out, desperate for his confession to reach her. Opening his eye he now saw the dark clouds covering the sky, the birds flying, wanting to reach their home before the darkness falls and covers the earth.
He looked at the white building standing in front of him. Dragging his legs, he entered the gate, his hand tracing the pocket of his trouser, his treasure secured there and his hold on the red rectangular box tightened. He moved inside the building.
Garima Gupta sat there, staring at the white tiles on the wall. Her hair in a loose bun, her always neatly plated pallu now just stayed carelessly on her shoulder. Her eyes waiting, just waiting, the tears were now dried leaving her eyes like a dry land and hollow, the darkest shade of black under her eyes making it look more cavern.
"Amma, I am sorry. I will have to go!! I am sorry"
The parting words of her daughter have taken a permanent place in the wind, whispering in her ears at every gust of wind.
Lair!
Her heart chided her daughter. She always lies to her. She lies to her when she sneaks inside the kitchen and makes jalebis, making an innocent face the next morning and the one who is not aware of her daughter would even believe the story of ghosts she feeds them, by just looking at her innocent face. She lies to her when she hides her Buaji's old specs, just to hear her Nandkishores, again her innocent face there. She lies to her when she has any nightmare, declining it very tactfully, just to not see any worry cross her Amma's face.
And this time too she had lied to her. And Garima Gupta knows better than to give in her daughter's lies.
Her tiered eyes looked at the two feet, wearing pairs of cheap rubber slippers, halt in front of her. Her eyes lifted to look at the person.
Hate!!
Garima Gupta was never a woman who was familiar with this word. Being infertile, not being granted by any child of her own, being deprived of the most beautiful gift granted to woman and had cried over this for years, she had decided to adopt a child, a child who will call her Amma and will fill the void in her incomplete world.
Reaching the orphanage, she had looked at the beautiful faces scattered everywhere, laughing, giggling and few just staring at her. She had loved every child in the orphanage, wanting to shower everyone with her love, seeing her child in every kid present there. Can't she take everyone with her? She had giggled imagining the faces of her husband and sister-in-law if she did just that. But as soon as her eyes had landed on a timid girl with the most beautiful eyes, standing in one corner as if frightened by everyone around her, everything around Garima Gupta had changed. The feeling of showering every child with her love ceased. She no longer wanted to shower her love on every child. Like a greedy mother she wanted to save every love, affection, every emotion for that girl, wanting to take her in her warmth and erase the frightened look from that girl's face. Khushi ! The warden standing beside her had whispered the girl's name as she saw her staring at the girl.
Khushi had made Garima Gupta a mother that day.
And now, when this man stood in front of her, a man who had tried to snatch her daughter, a daughter who left her for this man, bile like never before roused from the pit of her stomach. This man was the reason her daughter turned deaf to her pleading and left her that night, this man was the reason she has seen her daughter bleeding that day, this man was the reason her daughter has not opened her eyes from last six months. Her hand roused, mustering her all power, and landed on his chest, making him stagger many steps back.
Arnav steadied him in time and his eyes jerked up to look at the woman in front of him, who held only hatred for him in her misted eyes.
"You bas***d!!! How dare you come here?!! Aren't you satisfied?!!! Ab kya chahte ho?!! Humari bitiya ko maar kar hi chain milega kya tumhe?!!! Just go from here!!! Get out!! I just can't stand the sight of you!!! Go from here!! Chale jao yahase!! Why aren't you listening to me?!!! MOVE!!!"
"Listen to me pleas..."
"NO!!" her voice filled with vengeance forced Arnav to stop mid sentence.
"I don't want to listen anything! I just want you to leave this place, NOW!!"
"Please...please let me see her...please...she will listen to me...she will come back..."
Garima's face twisted with hate as she picked her hand wanting to punish him, just the way her daughter is being punished. But felt her hand being held by someone. She turned to look at her right.
"Garima.." Madhumati Mishra caught her sister-in-law's hand and again placed to its initial place.
"Jiji?" Garima looked at her Jjiji, confused on why she has stopped her.
"Let him see Khushi, Garima.." Madhumati Mishra said in a calm voice.
Garima looked at her shocked.
"Jiji? Aapye kya.."
"Listen to me Garima and let him see Khushi.."
Garima shifted her gaze from her Jiji to Arnav, her eyes held only hatred. But she relented and lowered her eyes.
Arnav wanted to thank Buaji, but was in so hurry to enter the room that he immediately turned towards the door as soon as he saw Garima lower her eyes, terrified that she will again stop him from meeting or even getting a glimpse of his Khushi.
He stumbled inside the room, a mix of fear and longing. He kept his gaze down, not lifting it to look at her till he neared her bed. As he reached the bed, his eyes landed on her hand, the white complexion of her has always caught him off guard, forcing him to think how anyone can be so pure. But today it looked pale, and the guilt came back with the great force. It's all because of him. Her Amma was right! The prickling needles poked in her soft skin, stinging his heart with thousand such needles. Where has he brought her? Where has his love brought her? Where has her love for him brought her?
"Khushi?" a shuddering breath dampen his dry eyes. And all emotions, which were submerged in darkness, fought frantically to set free and soon emerged conquered. And yet again she was successful in laying his every emotion raw in front of her, at the mere sight of her.
He stumbled to sit on the chair beside the bed. His eyes has still not dared to see her face, something was stopping him. What was it?--- a fear? A fear of not finding his old Khushi there, not finding the contagious smile on her face, not finding the same charisma on her face, not finding her soulful hazel eyes gazing back at him.
He kept the box on the table and slowly slowly placed his palm against her but she didn't tightened her assuring hold on his hand as she use to do always. He closed his eyes, the held tears were now stinging at the back of his eyes.
Tightening his hold on her hand, he started lifting his head. And then there she was. His heart jumped to his throat and the blood started pumping furiously in his veins as he took in her face. Her rosy cheeks were replaced by sharp cheekbones, her full pink lips almost a light shade of brown, her eyes dug inside.
And the sight she presented awakened hatred with such a force that if given the chance he would have wretched his heart and tore into merciless pieces, punishing him barbarously!
He hated himself!
He had entered her life and ruined her! He has ruined his sleeping beauty. A lone tear rolled down his cheek and fell on the back of her hand, held in his.
"Khushi..." the lump in his throat felt like a stone, piercing his throat.
"Khushi..." he tried again.
But she lay there, still, on the bed covered with a white gown, her eyes didn't even flicker.
Arnav looked at her, confusion clouding his face, she had never done that. She had always acknowledged his call, replied to his every call, in a sweet melodious voice that had always reached the deepest recesses of his heart and lay every emotions naked in front of her, at her mercy.
"Khushi? Are you mad at me?" Arnav leaned forward, his hand circling across her head and face close to hers. Yes! She must be mad, that's why she is not replying, there's no other reason for her denial to acknowledge his calls.
"So you are mad at me. I...I am sorry...I am sorry for everything...now open your eyes..." Arnav tried to smile.
Arnav's head jerked up as he heard the crackling sound at the window. He looked at the closed windows, the water falling at it and disappearing down. The sky has also joined him in his grief.

Dhundhli dhundhli shaam hui
Ab toh wapas aa jao..
Dhundhli dhundhli shaam hui
Ab toh wapas aaja na...
Ke is samay toh, parinde bhi... laut aate hai
His mind went back to the birds he had seen. They must have reached their home, safely. He again looked at Khushi. Then why is he denied of his home? Why isn't he allowed to look in those pair of eyes, so that he can drown in those eyes and feel all safe.
Tumhare baad hamara haal aisa hai,
Ke jaise saaz ke sab taar toot jaate hain
Ke is samay toh, parinde bhi... laut aate hai
Dhundhli dhundhli shaam hui
"Open your eyes...open your eyes, Khushi...please...I will die, love. Please...open it...punish me...do whatever you want to...but please open your eyes and let me look in those eyes...it's ...it's so suffocating without you...please open it...I love you...please...please...You don't know how I have spent last six months...My only ally was your eyes...your eyes which dared to see beautiful future for you...and...and also for a man like me, who deserves nothing...Nothing! ... You...you told me your Devi Maiya is impartial...Her punishments are always fair...No!...She is very cruel...She is punishing you for my crimes...She can't do that...She can't punish you for my sins...She has always been unfair...and this time too she is!! ...But ...but you can't do this to me...you can't ...please open your eyes...please..." Arnav pleaded, his all senses alert to see a slightest movement from her, but still she denied him, the continuous stream of tears falling from his eyes and wetting her cheek.
Tum toh gaye par yaad na gayi,
Zubaan se meri fariyaad na gayi
Guzri na aisi koi saans,
Jismein tumahara naam na ho,
Tab tak karunga yaad main,
Jab tak umr tamaam na ho,
Tumhare haath se mera haath yoon chhuta,
ke jaise bheed mein kuch haath chhoot jaate hai
ke is samay toh, parinde bhi.. laut aate hai
Arnav tightened his hold on her hand, afraid that her hand will slip away from his hold, like that dreadful night of his life. And the nights that had followed, the dreadful nights where he was deprived of even a glimpse of her. And his only companion was the pure and beautiful moments they have shared. Her beautiful eyes which use to jerk up to look at him as soon he use to place his hand on her room's window panel, and then the alluring smile that use to bloom without wasting a second, her uneven breathing, the indication of happiness due to his presence. He wanted all that to witness again. How is he to forget all that? He can't! He will die if he will not see those eyes again, he will die if he will not see that smile again. He will die!
"Khushi?" He cupped her face between his palms. "I will die...do you hear me, love?...I will die if I am deprived of seeing those eyes...your beautiful smile...your nonsense chatter...I will die Khushi...I will die, love..." He buried his faced in her hair. "Please...please open your eyes...please...please..." Arnav begged
Dhundhli dhundhli shaam hui,
Ab toh wapas aa jao...
Arnav's head jerked up, his eyes flashing with madness. Why isn't she opening her eyes? She wanted him to be a nice man----and he is becoming, then what is her problem? If she will not listen to him, then why should he listen to her. He will also not listen to her.
"You wanted me to be a nice man na Khushi? You wanted me to be a man whom you can introduce to your Amma. But do know what, Khushi? ...I will not become...I will not become a man you want me to...I will lead my life just the way I was leaving...beating people...murdering people just for money...I will again become that man...More cruel ...more heartless...more ruthless...more inhuman...a man whom you will dare not look at ...let alone love him...AND I WILL! ...I will show you, Khushi Kumari Gupta! What do you think, ha? That I can't live without you?...I show you...I WILL SHOW YOU THAT I CAN!!!" Arnav got up from his chair, the chair stumbling backward due to the force.
Khushi heard it!
"Open your eyes, Khushi..."
"I need to see those eyes..."
"I will die, love..."
"I will again become that man!! "
"more heartless...more ruthless...more inhuman...a man whom you will dare not look at ...let alone love him"
NO!!!
Khushi's unconscious mind screamed. No! She can't allow him that. He can't do that. She wants him to be her Arnav ji.
"I will show you!!"
NO!!
Khushi took a shaky breath, wanting to stop him from going out. He will again become that man. He will again become that man. Khushi's eyes betrayed her but her heart cried. She will not allow that to happen. She fought! She fought the darkness. She has to fight this darkness. She will fight otherwise he will leave her and become a man she despise. NO! No, Arnav ji! He mind screamed as the voice stopped instantly. No! He is going! He is going! She can't allow him to go! She will not! She will fight ! Fight! And so she fought! Fought the darkness that had captured her from months but not anymore. She will fight them.
Arnav stared at Khushi after getting up from the chair, hoping atleast she will now hear his plea. But no! The stubborn woman she was, she still lay there not paying a heed to his warning. If she is not listening to him then now he will do just what he had said. All determined to act on his warning, Arnav tried to get away, his jaw set. But stopped immediately. Was that his illusion? He didn't turn back to check. Too frightened that the tightening hold on his hand must be an illusion. His adam's apple moved up and down rapidly. No! Not this time! He wanted it be a reality not any illusion.
Still afraid, he slowly turned around.
"Arn...Arn...Arnav ji..."
He collapsed on his knees beside her bed. His loosened hold tightening instantly. He looked in her slightly opened eyes, a shuddering relief shook his body. He just stared in her eyes, wanting to drown in those eyes so that if now she closes her eyes, she can take him with her, not leave him to rot in this world, which has nothing without her.
"Khushi..." the streams found it's route again, rising little he buried his face in he crook of her neck, his hand holding her head, afraid that she will leave him.
"Khushi...I...Thank you...thank you for opening your eyes...thank you...I would have died Khushi...I would have died...thank you for saving me, love...thank you..."
Khushi wanted to lift her hand, to run it on his back to assure him but had no strength to even do that simple task.
"I..."
Arnav lifted his head and leaned close to her face.
"Yes...what is it, Khushi..." Arnav caressed her cheek as he saw her trying to say something.
"Don't g...don't go..." Khushi rasped... "be...become...become a nice man...don't...don't go back..."
Continuous tears spilled out from his eyes as he placed his lips on her's, silencing her.
"Never!...Never in this life time, love...And if you promise me to accompany me in my every life, every birth...then I promise ...I promise to never go back to that world...the world which dared to take my Khushi away from me...I love you, Khushi...You are my life, love...Never try to leave me..." Arnav breathed again her lips.
Khushi's lips stretched into a smile.
Arnav saw her smile and his eyes landed on the red box beside the bed. Sitting beside her he took the box in his hand.
"Khushi...I...I brought jalebis for you...and I swear on you...I worked hard to buy money for this...sacchi..." Arnav kept the box again on the table and got up to remove the packet from his trouser pocket. "Khushi..." Arnav sat again and unwrapped the packet to reveal a beautiful white dupatta. "I had spoiled your dupatta na?...So...so I bought this for you...you remember when we met at the temple...that day you told it was your birthday...I wanted to give you a gift...I also had the money...but that money...that money reminded me of the sins I have done to earn that...And I wasn't able to touch that money to buy anything for you...So...so I earned money from my hardship to buy this, Khushi...Tumhari Kasam" Arnav kept the dupatta near her head on the pillow and again leaned over her face, just staring at her, her eyes slightly open and a small smile playing on her lips.
Arnav too smiled at her.
"My...my..." Arnav tried to stop her by placing his finger on her lips, seeing the strength she needs to even form a single word but Khushi stopped him by shaking her head.
"My...my...my Rakshas ...my Rakshas has become a Rajkumar..."
Arnav's lips broke into a broad smile and Khushi even heard a faint voice of laugh, or was her mind playing with her. But nevertheless, atleast his lips adorned a smile.
"Only because of you and only for you, love" Arnav leaned over her and placed his lips on her.
Love! Their love has conquered everything. The hatred, the pain, the separation, and even the death, merging them together for life, for this and many to come.
