Ludhiana, September, 5: The vast sets and foreign locales has already reached Tellywood from Bollywood. But in terms of fashion, there's a stark difference between the two worlds. A great deal has been done to make our film heroines look beautiful by bringing in professional style and fashion experts: the Kajol bob-cut (Kuch Kuch Hota Hai), Preity's permed locks (Dil Chahta Hai) or the designer clothes which our Bollywood brigade has been wearing of late are witness to the glamour and touch of modernity acquired by our film stars. However, our Tellywood heroines have still to shed off their sati-savitri bharatiya nari looks. The Indian bun and bindis or the long hair tied in plaits still adorn our Tulsis, Parvatis, Prernas, Poojas and our Miss Plain Jane Jassi.

It's our tele vamps who have all the luck: they are the fashionable ones, the stars with style. From their remarkable bold make-up, hairstyles and the way they dress-up to the music that accompanies them whenever they pop up - they're cool and coquettish. Ramona Sikand (Sudha Chandran) was identified by her bindis. Komolika (Urvashi Dholakia) has the strings and beads hanging down from everywhere and her eye make-up reminds us of the 70s Asha Parekh, Sadhna, Hema Malini. Mallika (Jassi...) walks in through Gulmohar wearing Satya Paul's latest and the most recent evil woman in Kahani..., Kunika, appears with short hair, so does Esha on her recent return to Kkusum. In fact, high fashion and short hair are trademarks of these 'bad' characters - even in the latest crop of serials such as Dekho Magar Pyar Se, the goody lead, Nikky is if anything overdressed while Tanya is very revealing. Our good Aparna of Kasauti... has gone vampish. She's left behind her saree and blouse for western clothes and a blonde wig of long hair with fringes. And, then there is Ansh (Akashdeep Saigal), the manic husband of Nandini who has set a new trend amongst male villains by sporting a ponytail the colour of which alternates between brunette and blond. Does that mean our Tellywood code does not permit a good woman to be modern looking or fashionable? Or is it that bringing out a negative shade in a person is all about bold make-up and trendy hairstyles? And, when will the trend change? Please, please, let's have a really stylish leading woman.
