Chapter 25
With Najma and Humeira on one side, and Nikhat and Nuzhat on the other, they escorted Zoya out to the hallway where the engagement would take place.
The house was exquisitely decorated. White flowers hung from the ceiling and there were lights and garlands on the pillars and walls. Clearly, the dcor for a big celebration. The celebration of the union of Asad and Zoya.
Asad was standing at the centre with Dilshad and two other ladies who were pulling his leg.
Their conversation was stopped midway as Asad caught a glimpse of Zoya.
He had known she was beautiful. He had seen her not too long ago. But he couldn't help but be awed at her simplicity and elegance. In her room, it was more about proposing to her, but now, he really, truly looked at her, as if etching her in his eyes, his mind, his heart.
She's beautiful, he thought, not finding any other words to truly describe her. But not like those girls in movies or magazines. She was much more than that. She was beautiful for her kindness. For her thoughts. For the way she would put others before her and for her ability to make others happy, disregarding that fact that she wasn't. She was beautiful for her noisy banter, the way she would argue down to the end for something she believed. For that glint in her eyes when she talked about something she loved, her passion, her love for life. Her everything.
And she is going to be mine.
"Asad?" he felt his Ammi's hand on his shoulder, tapping him gently then with more force.
"Mmm" he replied, his eyes still glued to Zoya who was now standing before him.
"Chalo." Najma said as both her and her Ammi led them to the special seats arranged for them.
The crowd was small; they had decided to keep the engagement a minor affair and then hit off all the wedding rituals with a bang.
Mostly because of Asad though, who didn't see the need for all the extravaganza. But the only thing Dilshad allowed to be on a smaller scale was his engagement, so he really had to take what he got right?
They sat together, in the presence of Appi, Zeenat, Ayaan, Nuzhat, Nikhat, Humeira, Dadi, Rashid and Shireen. For Dilshad, it was an overly warming gesture on Rashid and Shireen's part to actually attend, and so she was very thankful and stood with them. (In addition to the fact that she was protecting them from her lion of a son.)
After a few moments of chit chat, Dilshad made an announcement, and everyone became excited as it was time for the exchange of rings.
Najma stood next to Zoya, holding a box with the ring for Asad, and Nikhat, the same next to Asad.
"Zoya, tumhara haath?" Dilshad asked, smiling down at Zoya.
Asad's eyes widened in realization.
"Ammi!" he blurted out, moving away her outstretched hand.
Everyone was shocked.
"Asad! What are you doing?" Dilshad scolded.
"Woh ... actually.. Ammi.. I think we should wait for a little..."
"Allah miyan!!!!! What's wrong with you" Zoya looked horrified and ready to snap his neck.
"Shh. I'm just saying..."
"Phupi, I don't understand anything he's saying. Deal with him please."
"Beta, what's the problem?"
"uhhh"
Ayaan and the three girls, catching on to what was playing on Asad's mind, decided to help.
Asad meanwhile was making eye contact with Zoya, trying to lead her to her left hand so she would realize what he meant.
"Arrey! Why are you moving your head like that? Kya hua?"
"Bhabhi!" Ayaan whispered from behind her.
"Kya!" she shouted.
"Shhh"
"Kya shhh shh?" Dilshad snapped.
"Zoya, tumhara ... haath" Najma nudged softly.
"Haan, I have one, you have one too. Well two actually! Why is this important now? Everyone has two hands"
Ayaan slapped his head and the girls giggled.
"Ya allah what kind of a fool am I marrying?"
"Tumne kuch kaha?"
"Zoya, forget it" Asad said finally.
Turning to Dilshad he said.. "Actually Ammi..." he began and turned her facing away from Zoya, while motioning them to get the task done.
Quickly, Ayaan tried to pull the ring out of her finger and at last Zoya realized why Asad had stopped them.
"Jaldi karo" Zoya whispered.
The ring was stuck and after pulling and pulling finally it came out but it went flying across the room, right in front of...
Dadi.
"Achaaa so this is what you two are up too?" she smiled walking to them, and Dilshad and the others gathered.
"Asad? This was the ring you bought a while back no?"
"Ji Ammi.. woh actually.."
"But Zoya wasn't wearing this even this morning, so when..?"
"Actually, Phupi, your son is such a coward, he waited to propose to me right before the engagement ceremony"
Asad scoffed and began to argue but Dilshad ended their banter and pr0ceeded with making them wear their rings.
Asad slipped the ring onto Zoya's ring finger on her left hand, as well as making her wear the other ring on her right hand.
And after Zoya made him wear his ring, there was a round of applause followed by a toast.
Dinner followed, over which both families discussed the preparations for the upcoming events.
After everyone left, Dilshad and Zoya sat outside, talking, much to Asad's dismay because he wanted to spend time with Zoya. Nevertheless, he turned in early after bidding them goodnight.
"Phupi, actually my best friend, Aatif, wanted to come from New York for my wedding and all the rituals...and I was thinking that"
"He should stay here?"
"Well, if you don't mind?"
"Zoya! What kind of question is that? Of course I won't mind. Let him stay here. And anyway this is your house now too" she said, kissing her forehead.
"Thank you Phupi!"
"Ek aur baat!"
"Mhm?"
"Now I'm not your Phupi. I'm Ammi"
Zoya blushed.
"If you have to blush so much, you better practice from now!"
Zoya looked up to her. "Ammi" she said, tears rolling out her eyes.
"Zoya, please, don't cry beta. I didn't mean to upset you" Dilshad said, taking her in for a hug.
"Nahi... it's not that.. it's just"
"Kya?"
"I always wanted my Ammi. I know I couldn't get her back and I always questioned why I had to lose her. I always felt I was lacking something in my life. My Ammi. But now I realize why Allah took her. Because he had another Ammi waiting for me" she said this wiping Dilshad's tears which were now trickling down her cheeks.
"I don't know what I would do if you weren't here Ammi" she said, hugging her again.
Anwar and Zeenat saw this and thanked Allah that their Zoya had finally gotten everything she ever wanted from life. They were leaving her in good hands indeed. She may have lost her Abbu but at least she had her Ammi and Asad who would love her so much she wouldn't think of it. She had her sisters who loved her very much.
Next morning:
Zoya went outside to get the newspaper and mail, while Dilshad and Najma and Zeenat fixed everything for breakfast.
Anwar and Asad came down soon after and everyone was ready to eat.
"Ammi, where is Zoya?"
"Oh she just went to get the mail, don't worry"
They started to eat but Asad was hesitant, as he wanted to wait for Zoya. He was already irritated he hadn't gotten time to spend with her the night before, and now she was taking so long outside.
"AHHH" his train of thought was broken by a sudden scream.
"Zoyaaa" he yelled running out the door followed by the others.
"Kaha ho tum! Tum theek ho na?" he cried.
"Oh ho! Stop being such a baby! I'm right here!" she said.
"Wheree"
"Over here!" and he followed the sound of her voice.
"I don't understand. Where are y..." before he could continue, his eyes glimpsed at the ground and he saw Zoya kneeling down, her back to him.
"I was so scared. Are you okay? Why are you sitting like that? Is your foot okay?" he started and the rest of them laughed at his concern.
"I'm fine Asad! But look what I've found!" she exclaimed eagerly, as she took something in her hand and got up. Turning to face Asad, she wore raised her eyebrows and a crazy smile as she held up something in her hands to his face.
"WOOF WOOF!"
