This chapter has been very well scripted, my dear Kunchu.
I say scripted because it reads exactly like a scene in a film or a TV crime thriller. Actually, by the time you get to the end of
Adhuri Kahani, I am confident that it will make a very good script for a dark, edgy thriller directed by one of the Raghavan brothers, preferably Sriram, who made, if I am not wrong,
Johnny Gaddaar & Ek Hasina Thi. I was moved by Janhvi's story, which is repeated
ad infinitum all over India and the rest of the world. The drug Shastri uses is well known in US campus circles, I understand. I wish, however, that Janhvi had shown more spunk and not condemned her parents to misery and humiliation by taking this way out.
I was even more touched by the resilient commitment of Karan and his comrades to getting justice for their dead friend. To hang in there with what looks like a lost cause must have taken a lot out of Karan, and very few would endanger their future career for the mirage of avenging Janhvi.
That it proved to be a mirage is not a clearcut indictment of the police and the courts. Such cases, with no clinching evidence, are the nightmare of even the most honest and committed police officers. They are convinced about who is guilty, but they have no evidence that will stand up in court. No wonder some of them become a Dirty Harry and take to dispensing rough, instant justice.
Curiously enough, the serial is rapidly coming around to this line of thinking after showing Arjun as rigidly committed to the letter of the law all this while. Now he seems to be advocating mob justice, by lynching or burning the criminals.
This chapter is particulary interesting for what it reveals of Arjun's
modus operandi. He clearly operates thru what must be a steadily widening network of strictly compartmentalised cells. Each such cell consists of just one helper each, that one a committed recruit bound to Arjun, like Karan and Shaina, by unbreakable ties of gratitude. That person is used only for a simple, single task, the results of which cannot possibly be traced back to him/her. Arjun's contacts with his recruits is always anonymous, both for his safety and their own.
Thus far, this is comparable to the best spy networks. But there is one exception to the cardinal ruls of absolute anonymity for Arjun, and no direct contacts with him. That exception, Shaina, is a product of the extreme circumstances of her case and the special protectiveness he feels toward this girl whose life he has saved. It remains to be seen if this exception proves to be dangerous for Arjun or Shaina or both.
Arjun's protectiveness towards Shaleen, tinged with irritated contempt for his weaknesses, is of an entirely different kind. How could it be otherwise with Arjun's own
alter ego?
For now, Arjun has neatly distracted Zaid and Naina from Shaleen and Shaina with what looks like a major smuggling racket. They will get praise for nabbing the criminals involved, and if Arjun keeps tossing them such goodies, they will soon start seeing him as a valuable resource in their ongoing struggle against crime. But then Arjun has his own agenda, and he is no one's tool. Zaid and Naina will soon find that out.
