Part 13
Khushi looked around in awe at the magnificent surrounding. Her beautiful browns shining with elation and admiration. She felt her husband tugging at her hand, but still her eyes refused to leave the beautiful carvings on the building walls.
"Kusi, sit here .."
Khushi looked at her husband to see him pointing at a bench. She looked around to see benches arranged in two rows. They were standing near the first row now.
Akash went and sat on the bench, patting the place beside him. "Come, Khushi .."
Khushi walked and sat beside him.
Arnav sat Beside Khushi.
Khushi looked in front to see few children standing there, and soon the hall boomed with a sweet music. She smiled and clapped her hands as the kids started singing.
"Shhh,.They are singing prayers, Khushi .." Akash whispered.
"Oh" she closed her eyes and joined her hands.
Akash chuckled. "No need to close your eyes, Khushi. Just listen to them quietly, OK?"
Khushi opened her eyes to look at him. "OK"
Arnav smiled at her clueless self.
As the music ended, Khushi looked at her husband and Brother-in-law, who closed their eyes and joined their hand, holding the joined hands close to their heart.
"Akash Bhaiya, kya hume Angrezi mein prarthana karni hai?" Khushi tilted her head towards her brother-in-law and asked him.
Akash smiled and opened his eyes. "No sweetheart. God understands every language. You can say your prayer in any language.."
Khushi smiled. "Thank you". she closed her eyes and joined her hands.
"Tata ...Tata ...Tata "
Arnav chuckled as he saw Khushi waving enthusiastically at the crowd in front of her.
"Kusi, step in , we are getting late..."
Kushi turned her head to look at her husband. "Can't I invite them all to the party?" Khushi asked sweetly.
Arnav's eye widened. He looked at the crowd in front of them. "Sweetheart, I know you find our palace really big, but I am afraid it won't be able to accommodate my country people.."
Khushi pouted sadly. "Theek hai ...It's fine.."
Arnav took her hand in his. "Don't be upset, they enjoyed here."
Khushi nodded head.
Arnav smiled and helped her climb the carriage.
Arnav entered Kusi's room after changing into black breeches, white shirt and a coat on. He looked at her sitting in front of the mirror, now wearing a similarly designed white and yellow gown. Looking spell bindingly beautiful she got up from her chair and walked towards him.
"You are looking very nice..." Kusi said and stood on her toes to adjust his collar.
Arnav smiled down at her and kissed her cheek. "You are looking very beautiful, Kusi. Are you happy?" Arnav asked, his emerald eyes shining with love.
Khushi nodded her head vigorously. "My best happy birthday!" she announced. "Villagers gave me so many gifts, I never got so many gifts. The church was so beautiful, I prayed too...in Hindi.." she giggled.
Arnav smiled. "I am glad you enjoyed yourself.. Ready for the party?"
Khushi again nodded and caught hold of his arms. "Ready. No nervous..."
They were in the corridor when they saw a familiar figure coming towards them. Arnav gritted his teeth and his hold on his wife tightened.
"Happy birthday, my lady." Jennifer wished.
Khushi smiled. "Thank you.." She said, unaware of her husband's uneasiness.
"This is for you, my lady" Jennifer forwarded a velvety pouch.
Before Khushi can lift her hand to receive the gift, Arnav took the gift from Jennifer's hand.
"Thank you, Jenifer Mathews. Your Father told me you are leaving for your Grandmother's place, so I assume you will be having lot of packing to do. " Arnav said, his hard eyes fixed on her face.
"Yes, my Lord, you are right. But I am done with all the work. I will leave as soon as the party is over. I hope that's fine with you." Jennifer smiled.
Arnav averted his eyes for her teasing one, his jaw set.
"We are getting late. You can enjoy the party and get lost from here." Saying that, he pulled Kusi with him, and walked away.
Khushi gasped and looked at him. "You should have not said that. That was rude."
Arnav glared at her. "Shut up! I have told you not to talk with her, but when do you ever listen to me?" Leaving her hand, he took out Jennifer's gift from his pocket. Reaching to a window, he threw the pouch outside.
"Ye aapne kya kiya?!" Khushi ran towards him.
"I have told you, Kusi. I don't trust her, she is not a good lady."
"But that was just a gift."
"You will listen to me!"
Khushi pouted. "Don't shout at me. It's my birthday."
Arnav closed his eyes and inhaled deeply, trying to control his anger. He is feeling so uneasy from morning. He don't want this day to be ruined in anyway. He don't trust Jennifer, she is capable of doing anything. He opened his eyes to look at her beautiful face, the fog of anger disappearing instantly. Inching close to her, he cupped her face.
"Kusi , I ...I ..you are precious to me, Kusi ... I don't... don't want anyone to hurt you..." He stammered, not knowing if he should tell her this or no. But she is special to him, it's impossible to lead his life without her. He wants her to be with him always, safe, healthy, happy. Even a slightest exposure to fear shakes him to the core. He have lost so much in life, he don't want to lose her too.
"Why will anyone hurt me? Nani-Maa says if you don't hurt anyone, nobody will hurt you. You are precious to me too." She smiled.
Arnav smiled and kissed her cheek soundly. "I am flattered. Thank you..."
Khushi smiled and hugged his arm. "Don't be scared... I am not going to leave you.." She pulled him by his arms to started walking. "We are getting late , walk fast." she said excitedly, making her husband chuckle.
Arnav talked with his nobles, his eyes still fixed at his wife. Why is he feeling so restless? An unknown fear has captured his heart, refusing to leave him. All he wants to do is, take her to his room and lock her there, away from everyone, away from any lurking danger. Gulping down the wine offered to him, he dismissed his nobles and walked towards his wife.
"Kusi, let's cut the cake. Come.." he took her hand in his.
"I thought there's still time.." Khushi said.
"Yes, Bhai it's too early. Some are yet to arrive" Akash said.
"No. We are not waiting for anyone now, Akash. " Arnav announced firmly.
Arnav asked the servant to bring the cake and soon the cake was in front on them.
Khushi looked at the big, beautiful cake in front of her with a smile on her face.
"This is for the Duchess. Duke had said not to serve wine to the duchess, it doesn't go well with her. So I have made this fruit juice for her, it's only for her, understood?" The head Maid advised the servants. Getting a nod from them, she moved to the next work.
Jennifer, who stood near the kitchen door, smiled. Walking inside, she stood in front of the servants.
"Go to the hall, you all are needed there." She ordered the servants.
The servants nodded their head and went away.
Assuring that everyone is out, she turned to look at the juices prepared specially for her Duchess. She removed a packet. Opening it, she put it in the drink.
"Special juice for our very special Duchess " Taking a spoon she stirred the juice. "With some special ingredients." Throwing the spoon away, she walked out of the Kitchen.
The restlessness only grew with every passing seconds. His hand refused to leave her hand.
"Everyone is so happy.." Khushi said to him. She had cut the cake, everyone sang a beautiful birthday song for her. It felt so nice. Everything felt nice and happy.
Arnav looked down at her. Only if everyone could leave. He wants them behind the closed door of his room, where no one can reach her, no harm can reach her, where his restless heart can buy some peace.
"Khushee!" Maria stood in front of Khushi.
"Maria Jiji!" Khushi left her husband's hand and hugged her Jiji. "I am so happy you came"
"I had to come ...Happy birthday, baby! I have made cupcakes for you. I kept that in the kitchen. You like that, don't you?" Maria asked, kissing her cheek.
"Yes. I like cupcakes"
"Good. But why are you standing here. Come with me, my friends are standing there.." Maria took her hand in hers.
"No..." Arnav stopped Maria. "She isn't going anywhere, Maria."
Maria turned to look at him, confused. "But why, Arnev bhai?"
"Because I said so. She isn't going anywhere."He caught Kusi's hand and pulled her to him.
Maria looked at Khushi, sad.
"I..." Khushi started.
"No, Kusi. Not today.. Please .. You can meet Maria's friends some other day, but not today...I..." Arnav closed his eyes, not knowing how to explain her. "OK" He opened his eyes. "We are leaving"
"What? Why?!" Maria and Khushi asked in unison.
"No questions, Kusi ...please. Come with me...Maria, tell Akash I am not feeling well."
Maria nodded her head, not at all happy.
Arnav tightened his hold on Khushi and started towards the stairs.
Khushi waved her hand at her Maria Jiji with a sad pout. She turned her head to look at her husband. "Are you really not feeling well?" Khushi asked, concerned.
"I...I...yes...a little headache..." Arnav replied.
"Don't worry , I will massage your head and it will be all fine.." Khushi said.
And he felt guilty for lying. He don't want to deny any happiness to her. He knows she was enjoying the party and he is dragging her away from that. But he has no choice. He isn't feeling good. It feels like something unpleasant is going to happen. He wants to avoid it at any cost.
Arnav frowned as he heard some footstep. Stopping, he turned around to see a servant standing few feet away from them.
"What?" Arnav asked.
"My lord, you had asked to make fruit juice for the duchess..." the servant replied.
Arnav looked at the tray in his hand.
"Keep it in your Duchess room and go away." Arnav said.
The servant nodded and walked past them to do as said.
As the servant left Khushi's room, Arnav locked her door from outside.
"I want to change my clothes.." Khushi said as she saw him closing the door.
Arnav nodded his head. "I know .." Taking her in his room, he locked the door of his room too. Moving towards the joint door, he opened it for Khushi. "Go and change your clothes and come back, OK?"
Khushi nodded her head. "OK!" She entered her room through the joint door.
Khushi came out of the bathroom after changing into a simple pink ghagra choli. She walked towards the dressing table to comb her wet hair but stopped as her eyes landed on the glass kept on the bedside table. She smiled. The servant had said Arnav ji had asked to make this for her. Smiling, she kept the comb on the dressing table and took the glass in her hand.
"Kusi..."
Khushi kept the empty glass on the table and turned to look at her husband. She smiled at him.
Arnav walked towards her "Time to sleep.." Taking her hand, he started towards his room but stopped as he felt her not moving. He turned to look at her. She was holding her head.
"Kusi?" His voice came out laced with concern.
"I don't know. Not feeling well ... sir ghum raha hai ... " She swayed.
Arnav caught her and held her in his arms. "Kusi ! What happened? Talk to me ..."
"I...I .. Sir ghum raha hai ..."
Arnav saw her breath turning shallow with terror filled eyes. "Kusi! Kusi!!!" With his heart thudding with fear, he saw her close her eyes and her body going limp in his arms. "No! No!!Kusi!!" He cradled her close to his heart. "Akash!! Akash!!! Call the Doctor!!" He looked down at her pale face. No! No...Don't leave ...don't leave me!
