Chapter 1 : Echoes of the Dead
6 Years Later
Khadakwasla Lakeside Pune

The evening sun had dipped below the horizon, leaving behind a bruised purple sky that mirrored itself in the still, scenic lake. Maan and his dance academy coaches were winding down after a long day of camp activities. They had finished an early dinner, and the air had grown crisp enough to warrant a roaring bonfire.
Maan sat back on a log, a half-empty bottle in his hand, watching the sparks dance up into the dark. Around him, his friends were in high spirits, laughing and tossing out ambitious goals they wanted to pursue in the coming years.
Suddenly, the crackle of the fire was punctuated by a heavy sigh. Yuzi leaned forward, nudging Maan’s shoe with his own.

"Maan yaar, kab tak aise Devdas bante phiroge?"(Maan, my friend, until when will you be like a sad lover?" Yuzi asked, his tone shifting from playful to genuinely concerned. "It's been six years! Your second love married that cricket coach, and they have a whole family now. It’s time to move on, brother. Go find yourself another girl."
Maan stared into the flames, taking a slow sip from his bottle. "It’s not that easy, Yuzi. I’m just... not over her. Maybe I never will be. I don't want to commit to someone new when my heart is still anchored somewhere else. Besides, I'm genuinely happy being single and co-parenting with Maysha and Ayush."
Maddy tossed a twig into the fire, chiming in. "Yuzi is right, Maan. And what exactly isn't easy? Look at your old rival, Ishaan. He’s always hanging around that girl ever since he was of the doctors that saved her son... what’s her name again?"
"Katha," Maan supplied quietly.

"Yeah, right! Katha!" Maddy snapped his fingers. "Even he is trying to move forward."
"That's different," Maan countered, shaking his head. "Ishaan doesn't love Katha. He’s only in her orbit because of Mahi. Since Katha is a mother figure to her, and Aarav, Katha's son needs a father figure like Ishaan, their families practically trying to arrange them in an union. It's not real feelings keeping them together. Deep down, Ishaan still only loves and misses Maira."

"But Maira is dead, Maan!" Maddy pressed, his voice softening with empathy. "Of course anyone would miss a person who is gone—death leaves a permanent void. But you and Maysha live in the very same city. You see her every single Sunday when you swap twins duties. If anything, you're the one who needs to move on as soon as possible. Keeping yourself in love with a married woman? Even if she's your ex, it’s just not healthy."
Silence fell over the circle, save for the snapping of the burning wood. Maan looked down at the bottle in his hands, acknowledging the weight of his friend's words.
"Okay. Okay, I hear you guys. I’ll think about it," Maan said, his voice dropping an octave. "And look, I know it's not entirely healthy. That’s exactly why I instantly shot down the idea six years ago when Ayush offered to let me move in with him and Maysha to make co-parenting 'easier.' I knew my boundaries."
He paused, running a hand through his hair. "But over the years, because Maysha and the kids are constantly in my life, I just couldn't clear my head enough to look at anyone else. It's not like I didn't try. I went on dates. I tried to open up. But my love for Maysha was just too overpowering. Eventually, I just chose to stay single. I carved out this identity for myself, and honestly, I grew comfortable in it. It’s a hard habit to break... but like I said, I’ll try to think about it."
Seeing the raw honesty in Maan's eyes, the boys nodded respectfully, letting the heavy atmosphere lift. Not wanting the night to end on a somber note, Yuzi suddenly clapped his hands together, breaking the tension.
"Alright, enough of the heavy philosophy. Let's change the vibe," Yuzi grinned, pulling out an empty glass bottle. "Truth or dare, boys. Who's first?"
Shalu spoke up, a playful smirk dancing on her lips. "Let it be, guys. After all, I’m the only female dance coach of our beloved Dare2Dance Studio, so I get the honor of kicking things off."
She leaned forward and gave the glass bottle a sharp spin. It clattered loudly against the wooden log before slowly coming to a halt, its neck pointing directly at Yuzi. Shalu grinned, locking eyes with him.
"Yooo, Yudishtra... tell me, what’s it gonna be? Truth or dare?"
Yuzi puffed out his chest confidently. "Truth. You know me, I’m a satyavachan (honest) kind of guy. Nothing but the facts."
"Oh, really?" Maan chuckled, nudging him with his elbow.

Shalu’s playful demeanor shifted into something softer, her eyes locking onto Yuzi's as she tried to coax out the feelings she had been sensing for months. "Alright, Mr. Truthful. Here’s your question: Word on the street is that Yuzi is secretly in love with a girl whose name starts with the letter 'S.' Is it true?"
The surrounding chatter died down instantly. Yuzi looked at her, the teasing smile fading into something remarkably genuine. "Yes. It’s absolutely true. And... do you want to know her name?"

Shalu’s heart did a little flutter. "Yes, I do."

"It’s you," Yuzi said softly.
A collective "Oooh" echoed around the bonfire. Shalu’s eyes widened, a bright smile breaking across her face. "Aww! Then why did you take so long to ask me out, you idiot? I shouldn't have had to trick you into saying it!"

"Shalu, I just never found the right opportunity," Yuzi admitted, taking her hand. "But I have it now. I love you... will you be my girlfriend?"
"Yes, stupid!" Shalu laughed.
Yuzi pulled her into a warm, lingering kiss while Maddy and Maan hooted, cheered, and clapped, celebrating the studio's newest couple.
Once the excitement settled, Yuzi grabbed the bottle to keep the game moving. He gave it a hard twist. This time, the bottle whizzed around and stopped dead at Maddy, with the turn to ask falling to Maan.
"What’s your poison, Maddy? Truth or dare?" Maan asked, leaning back.
Maddy, never one to back down, immediately opted for a dare. Maan threw a hilarious, embarrassing challenge his way, which Maddy executed flawlessly, leaving everyone in splits.
Flush with victory, Maddy took his turn to spin. The bottle whirled across the surface and smoothly aligned itself right toward Maan. The question fell to Yuzi.
Yuzi grinned, a mischievous glint in his eye. "So, my dear boss... what’s it gonna be? Truth or dare?"
Maan sighed, swirling the remaining liquor in his bottle. "I think truth is too cliché at this point. Besides, you guys already know all my truths. So, dare it is. We’re the Dare2Dance crew, after all—bring it on."

Yuzi traded a wicked look with Maddy before turning back to Maan. "Now that you’ve chosen a dare, I’m not going easy on you, brother. Here is your challenge: I want you to go out and have a one-night stand. No strings attached. Just one night of pure enjoyment."
Maan choked on his drink, coughing as he stared at Yuzi in absolute disbelief. "Yuzi, have you lost your mind?! You want me to go sleep with a random stranger? Shalu, please, save me from your boyfriend's insanity!"

Shalu, however, just raised her hands in mock surrender, laughing. "Sorry, Maan. Honestly? I’m with Yuzi on this one. I think it’s time you step out of your Devdas zone and actually get laid."

"Yeah, why not?" Maddy chimed in, leaning forward eagerly. "Utilize the remaining youth you've got left, Maan. Serious question—do you even remember the last time you had sex?"
Maan looked down at his bottle, his voice dropping into a sheepish mumble. "Six years ago..."
"Exactly! Six years ago!" Yuzi exclaimed, throwing his hands up. "And back then, you were what, thirty-five? Now you’re hitting middle age at forty-one. Go burn off whatever is left of your jawani, man!"
Maan looked between the three of them, completely outnumbered, though a small, reluctant smirk began to tug at the corner of his lips. "Okay, fine. But where exactly am I supposed to find this mythical place where I can just use up my remaining jawani?"
Maddy and Yuzi exchanged a highly synchronized, knowing smirk.

"We know exactly where..." Maddy whispered.

On the Road to Budhwar Peth
The wheels of the car hummed against the asphalt as Maddy navigated the dimly lit roads toward Pune's infamous Budhwar Peth. Maan stared out the passenger window, the anxiety finally getting the better of him. He turned to face Maddy.
"Bhai, is it really necessary to do this dare right now?" Maan questioned, his voice tense. "I’ve accepted the challenge, okay? Let me return to Mumbai, and I promise I'll complete it there."
Maddy didn't take his eyes off the road, but a knowing smile played on his lips. "Maan, I joined your academy six years ago when you were just starting out. I know you inside and out. Left to yourself, you wouldn't even kiss a girl on a first date, let alone have a one-night stand. You’re terrified of making the 'mistake' of letting another woman claim your lips or your body the way you connected with Maysha. That's why I have to make sure you get laid tonight. Besides," Maddy added with a smirk, "it gives me a chance to enjoy a night to myself, too."

Maan blinked, the pieces suddenly falling into place. He let out a dry, disbelieving laugh. "Ah. Now I get it. So while we’re getting laid out here, our newfound lovebirds can freely mate in their camping tent without feeling uncomfortable. All under the grand excuse of saving me from my celibacy. Nice one, Yuzi... Nice one."
"Chill, Maan," Maddy laughed, pulling the car up to the curb. "Just enjoy the fading moments of your youth. I’m sure this night will be worth it. Here we are."
Maan looked through the windshield, his eyebrows knitting together in immediate apprehension. "Okay... but why does this place look so incredibly shady?"
"Because it’s a red-light area."
Maan’s jaw dropped. "Are you serious, Mads? No. No way, I am not going in there. Is this even legal? Are these women safe?"
Maddy killed the engine and pushed his door open. "So many questions! Yes, it's regulated, and the women here undergo strict medical testing. Anyone who tests positive is taken into government care programs. Come on, get out of the car, Maan. Be a sport."
Reluctantly, Maan stepped out into the humid night air. Almost instantly, he felt the heavy, lingering gazes of the women standing along the lanes, their eyes tracking his every move. He leaned closer to Maddy, lowering his voice.
"Still, this feels like a terrible idea. Blind dates and casual hookups are one thing, but a red-light area?"
"Think about it, Maan," Maddy countered, adjusting his jacket. "The women here are paid professionals doing a job. On a blind date, a girl might end up catching feelings—which is exactly what we don't want right now, right? That completely defeats the purpose of a no-strings dare. Catching feelings can be your next challenge."
"Please, don't give me any more dares I can't handle," Maan muttered, rubbing the back of his neck. "Lest you forget, I have a family back in Mumbai. I am a father."
Maddy stopped, turning around to look at him with a deadpan expression. "Let me remind you, you only spend a day with the twins on Sundays. Stop making that your entire identity, Maan. For tonight, just live a little."

They stepped into the main room of the kothi—a sprawling, brightly lit space within the chawl where the head madam typically dealt with clients before assigning them to the women. Maan and Maddy made themselves as comfortable as they could on a worn leather sofa.
Maddy cleared his throat, looking at a nearby attendant. "Where is your madam?"
"I’ll call her in a minute," the woman replied, disappearing behind a heavy curtain.
Moments later, an older woman walked in with an undeniable aura of authority. She carried herself with the poise of someone who ran her establishment with an iron fist. Sinking into a plush armchair clearly dedicated to her, she evaluated them with a sharp glance. "You guys? New here?"
.jpg)
Maddy felt a sudden prickle of nerves under her intense gaze, but he quickly regained the confidence he had displayed in the car. "Yes."
"Okay," the madam said, leaning back. "Every woman here has a different rate according to her experience and demand. Clear?"
Maddy nodded in agreement, while Maan sat rigidly beside him, staring at the floor and wishing he were anywhere else in the world.
The madam clapped her hands sharply. "Girls..."
On her cue, a line of women who weren't currently with clients walked into the room, lining up against the wall.
"The ones you see outside on the road operate independently," the madam explained, her voice businesslike. "They take clients based on how much money they desperately need. They aren't police-verified, and they aren't health-checked. But the women under my roof are police-verified to work here, and they receive regular medical attention. Choose whoever you feel can please you."
Maddy scanned the lineup, his eyes slowing down as they landed on a woman near the center. "That one in the red salwar."

The madam smiled approvingly. "Saloni. Nice choice... a very hot pick."
Her eyes then shifted to Maan, who was sitting perfectly straight, looking decent, uncomfortable, and deliberately avoiding eye contact with anyone in the room. The madam frowned slightly. "What’s wrong with him? Doesn’t he like women?"
.jpg)
Maddy chuckled, nudging his friend. "No, no, he likes them. It’s just that yeh 6 saal ke baad apni bachi-kucha jawani ko istemaal karne wala hai, isiliye thoda sharma raha hai."(after 6 years, he is going to use up his pent up youth so thats why he is a little shy) "
.jpg)
"Oh, is that the case?" A knowing, softer look crossed the madam's face. "Don't worry. I have just the right girl for him. She's a new admit. Her formal police verification is still pending, but her medicals are absolutely clear. And I guess she hasn't used up much of her youth either; at her previous place, the woman in charge passed away before she ever assigned this girl to a single client. So, the two of them will be good company for each other. I'll send her straight to his room."

Maddy nodded excitedly, thrilled that the dare was working out so perfectly. Maan looked at Maddy, his face a mask of pure regret as the madam stood up and signaled an attendant to escort them.
The attendant gestured for the two men to follow, leading them down a narrow hallway toward their designated rooms.
*
The room was small, lit by the harsh, clinical glow of a single tube light that hummed faintly in the silence. Maan sat on the edge of the cot, his hands clasped tightly between his knees, staring at the floorboards as the sheer absurdity and discomfort of the dare weighed down on him.
Suddenly, a soft, hesitant knock broke the quiet.
"Come in," Maan said, keeping his back firmly toward the door. He cleared his throat, trying to sound firmer than he felt. "And close the door behind you."
He heard the click of the latch and the soft rustle of fabric as she complied. Taking a deep, stabilizing breath to steel himself, Maan stood up and turned around to face the stranger.

The words died in his throat. The air left his lungs all at once, as if he had been struck with a physical blow.
Maan staggered back half a step, his eyes widening in absolute, paralyzing disbelief. His brain short-circuited, refusing to process the image standing in front of him.
"Maira...?" he whispered, his voice cracking, barely audible.
The girl blinked back at him like a startled child. She wore a simple, slightly faded outfit, and her hands were clamped tightly together in front of her. Though she was clearly terrified to be alone in a room with a strange man, her brow furrowed in deep confusion at the name he had just uttered.

She didn't answer. Instead, she just stared at him with wide, innocent, and deeply frightened eyes, entirely unaware of the ghost she was embodying, looking like a deer caught in the headlights of a stranger's grief.
