Chapter 248: Upon a Pinch of Revelation
The wind whistled past her as she forced her legs to run with all their might, her hands clutching at the skirt of her gown and her hair, loosened from the bun, waving wildly behind her like a trail in the air.
The last golden flecks in the sky and the setting sun watched her as she raced through the tall grasses, hoping she was running the right way though tall dark trees of the distant forest loomed before her.
Suddenly, the air that was filled with the songs of the evening birds was rent by the loud sound of a neigh. Kushi's race came to a sudden halt and, if she hadn't stopped herself when she had, she would have collided into the dark horse that had suddenly appeared in the gloomy vicinity.
She hadn't seen it come, for her head had been swimming in an incomprehensible torrent of feelings.
Panting for her breath, she looked up at the rider who was holding onto the reins of the restless horse though his eyes were on the woman standing below.
"Are you mad!" yelled Lord Arnav, as he alighted from Shadow's back and marched up to his wife, "Do you know how strong his hoofs are?! You could have got yourself killed!"
Kushi's breath froze when her eyes beheld the man before her as though he was a materialization of her dreams.
After having heard Lord Akash's account of the mill and the Wish key, she couldn't hold herself waiting for Lord Arnav any longer and had rushed to find him, unable to contain the flurry of her emotions.
"What is the meaning of this madness, I say!" Lord Arnav resumed his rant, unaware of the raving in his wife's heart, "And what are you doing here?! In this late hour! Are you so out of your mind that you-"
All of a sudden, to the astonishment of Lord Arnav and the surprise of Shadow, Kushi rushed to her husband and raising herself on the tips of her toes, she threw her arms around his neck and clung to him in an overpowering embrace.
Her startling action stifled Lord Arnav's speech and he stood still, staring in disbelief over her shoulder at the darkening sky, unable to comprehend what had just happened.
With her cheek pressed against the side of his head, Kushi mumbled tearfully, "You bought the Mill back for Babuji..."
Lord Arnav gaped, "How did you-?" And then he frowned. Akash.
Then he stilled. Her warm breath was on his ear and her voice, trembling with emotion, whispered, "Thank you, Arnavji..."
All of a sudden, Lord Arnav felt his knees weaken and, as though in attempt to obtain support, he lifted his hands and placed them on his wife's hips, his chest leaning towards her.
Kushi closed her eyes and held him fastened in her embrace, wanting to not let go. And then, she did the most unlikely thing ever. She turned her face to his cheek and gently pressed her lips to his rough skin in a tender kiss.
Lord Arnav gulped, his grip on her hips desperate.
His voice came out in a whisper, "Kushi...what are you doing to me..."
Kushi smiled as she turned to look at him, her eyelashes brushing against his cheek, "My lord, you never cease to amaze me."
She released him from the embrace and stepped back but his arms were around her waist, demanding to hold her to him, "How so?"
Kushi looked up at him, "Because of how you are learning to love others."
The amused light in Lord Arnav's eyes turned serious, "What do you mean?" He lifted his hands to hold her by her shoulders, "If it is Ram and the Mill you are referring to, let me assure you: everything I did today was for you and not for anyone else."
Kushi took one of his hands and held it in the loving clasp of both her hands.
Tilting her head, she pressed the back of his hand against her cheek as her eyes gazed lovingly at him, "It can be accepted that it was for me that you bought the Mill for Babuji, in retribution of what you committed last year. But you didn't bring Ram to the Castle for me."
Lord Arnav was getting vexed, "Kushi, you-"
Kushi kissed the back of his hand and he gulped down his rising desire. Damn you, Kushi! Stop making me feel this way!
She looked at him, "You bought Ram to the Castle because YOU wanted it. Neither did Ram nor Master Happy ask you to adopt him, nor did Rahim Chacha ask for a son. At the Village, though you didn't understand it then, your heart went out to him and you were saddened to see him go. So YOU decided to give Ram a new home and Rahim Chacha a new son."
Lord Arnav stared at her, reluctant to believe the truth in her admission.
Kushi stepped forward and, lifting her hands, held his face in her hands, "Arnavji, it is not when you love me, but when you love OTHERS through me that I adore you."
