Chapter 8
Chapter 7: The Fear of Falling
The night of the reunion showcase finally arrived, andthe atmosphere was thick with anticipation. The once-familiar St. Louis DanceAcademy had been transformed for the event, with strings of fairy lightstwinkling along the walls and the stage illuminated by soft, golden hues. Old friends, alumni, and family filled the seats, their murmurs creating a hum ofexcitement.
Kriya, standing backstage, could feel the weight of themoment pressing down on her. The nerves that had simmered for days bubbled tothe surface, threatening to overwhelm her. Her fingers trembled slightly as sheadjusted her costume in front of the mirror. She hadn’t performed in front ofan audience in so long, and the stakes tonight felt higher than ever.
Behind her, Rey stood, watching her in silence. He couldsense the unease radiating off her. He knew she was still struggling with theidea of truly letting herself go — of trusting herself, and him, completely.
“Hey,” he said softly, stepping closer to her.
Kriya turned, offering him a faint smile. “I can’tbelieve it’s finally happening.”
Rey smiled back, but there was an intensity in his eyes.“You’ve got this. We’ve got this. Remember, we’re doing this together.”
She nodded, trying to push down the swirl of anxiety inher stomach. “It’s not just about the performance, Rey. It’s everything else. What we’re still figuring out... what happens after this.”
He placed a hand gently on her shoulder. “We don’t needall the answers right now. We just need to dance. One step at a time. And aftertonight, we can figure out the rest together.”
The words were simple, but they held so much weight —hope, trust, and the promise of a future that wasn’t bound by the past. Kriyalet out a deep breath, her heart settling a little. She turned her attentionback to the stage, where the audience was settling in.
“We can do this,” she whispered, more to herself than toRey.
He gave her an encouraging smile. “We already are.”
As the lights dimmed and the crowd fell silent, the fourof them — Rey, Kriya, Sharon, and Swayam — stood side by side backstage, waiting for their cue. The music began to play, a mix of powerful beats andsweeping melodies. Their cue was coming.
Sharon, ever the force of confidence, gave each of them abrief nod. “Let’s make this count.”
Rey felt a rush of adrenaline as the first notes of thesong filled the room, pulling him into the moment. Kriya stood next to him, herhand brushing against his, her body poised for the first move. The chemistrybetween them was undeniable, even in silence. This was their moment to provesomething — not just to the audience, but to themselves.
The curtain lifted, revealing the brightly lit stagebefore them. The audience’s faces blurred as Rey locked eyes with Kriya, theirconnection instantaneous, as if the world had disappeared around them.
They began to move, their bodies working in perfectharmony, their movements a reflection of the years they had spent apart, theemotions they’d never fully voiced, and the promise they were starting to maketo each other. The routine was fast-paced and intense, every spin, jump, andflip executed with precision. But the underlying rhythm between them wasunmistakable — the unspoken bond that had never truly faded.
As the performance reached its climax, Rey twirled Kriyain his arms, her body flying through the air with ease, a symbol of the trustthat had slowly been rebuilt between them. And in that split second, as herfeet landed firmly on the ground, she felt the fear of falling — not just inthe dance, but in everything else — slip away.
There was only the music, the movement, and the sharedspace they had created on the stage. They had come so far.
When the final beat hit, the audience erupted intoapplause. The four of them stood there, breathless and sweating, but somethingmore than victory filled the air — it was the quiet realization that they hadjust taken a step toward something greater.
But for Kriya and Rey, there was still much to confront —much to say.
As the curtain fell, Rey turned to Kriya, his voice lowbut filled with emotion. “How did that feel?”
She smiled, a sense of relief washing over her. “Like thebeginning of something new.”
And for the first time in a long while, they bothbelieved it.
